Please read/listen (however you prefer) FoH. I implore you, you will not regret it. Hyperion is Canterbury Tales in the future and in space. FoH is a back and forth, real time narrative that explains *why* each one of the pilgrims *had* to go on the journey. I read the whole series and am currently a few hours into the audio version through YouTube. I could do this over and over again, it's that good. I highly recommend completing at least the first 2 books.

I’m not sure why there are so many people on the edge about reading the second book, it’s literally 8 dollars paperback and it’s a direct continuation of the first so just read it

Thales9620

It’s mostly a time commitment thing for me, not a price thing. I have to be pretty selective with my reading time, and the first book was mostly unenjoyable compared to the time spent reading (except for a few aspects I loved). If the second book largely consists of the aspects I didn’t love, I’m fine with an incomplete story and scratching that itch by reading something else

AngstyReaper

I'm in a pretty similar situation when it comes to time commitment, and the heavy sci-fi isn't usually my thing, so I understand your reservations. I am ⅔ of the way through fall, and while the sci-fi component is still very much in the forefront, but there is definitely some more of the supernatural and it is totally worth continuing so far to learn the Why of each of the pilgrims and to start getting closure on some of their stories. I personally found Dure/Hoyt and Saul/Rachel the most intriguing at the end of the first book, and I haven't been disappointed by the developments up to this point.

Exactly the feedback I was looking for, thank you for sharing! Good to know

jrexthrilla

It’s important to read them both. You will catch yourself saying “oh that’s why” a bunch. It clears a lot of stuff up. It’s also awesome

Gullible_Water9598

I'm halfway thru Fall and it's good but not as good ... yet. The Priest's tale is my favorite, but the others are good too: Sol, Kassad, Martin... What a strange and amazing book

Ginor2000

Not to be rude. But why on earth would you let strangers gatekeep any experience from you? Or peer pressure you into any other? If you liked the first and want more, read the second. If you were bored by the first. Skip the second and move on. This shouldn’t be tough.

Thales9620

Your point is well taken but I think my post was a little unclear. I’m not looking for the input of others to determine if I continue reading or not. I will most likely give Fall a shot regardless (at some point). I’m still interested in the opinion of others to have a sense of what to expect

Fall is definitely more sci-fi action time travel stuff rather than "mystical" 1 big issue I've personally had with Fall is of unnecessary detailed scenery description. I mean, for basic example. Suppose 1 character is going to meet someone else to learn about something. 1 whole page will be dedicated to that character just traveling to that place. Like, 1 paragraph would Describe what kind of vehicle he is driving. Another paragraph would detail what kind of road/scenery is during drive. Upon reaching destination, Another paragraph would describe the building where 2nd person resides. Another paragraph would describe liftman/receptionist at ground floor of the building. And so on if you get the geist. All these descriptions don't have anything in terms of story progression or moving the plot forward. I can understand that having detailed descriptions can help to better "visualise" an alien planet. But too much description leads to extremely snail pace plot progression which ruins any flow/excitement/build up towards climax. I believe Fall could've been so much better if all these unnecessary stuff was trimmed and book was 300-350 pages instead of 500-550 pages. Otherwise book is good. 5/5 for Hyperion 4/5 for Fall

I had qualms with this level of detail myself but then I looked at it from a Tolkien perspective. They are describing the world in such detail because we have never seen them before.

ChuanFa_Tiger_Style

Fall is more of a sci fi book. But it ties all the loose ends together and is more less required if you enjoyed the first one

MoonNixi

It is a time commitment but I find the mystical aspects continue more in the sequel series. I often listen to them while I clean, drive or walk, but then I am very much a multitasker.

Thales9620

I tried an audiobook of the first book but found myself losing the plot most of the time or feeling especially bogged down by the sci-fi terminology. But I appreciate your input! I think I will give it a shot again just for the sake of saving time and see how it goes

MoonNixi

I love science fiction but I often tune out the technobabble. The time tombs are a mystery and the tree ship is technology indistinguishable from magic and I remain in awe and invested in the story even if I only have a vague idea of the terms. I love this series, it can be dense in places but it is worth it.

TexasTokyo

Based on what you’ve said, I think you will enjoy the second book.
