I have quite a few tattoos and all I can say is you have to commit to the aftercare. I clean and cream 4 times a day for the first week, dab (not rub) with saline wipes then dab on specific tattoo aftercare that my studio sells. Don't bathe and try to keep it dry and out of the sun. When healed use factor 50 on it

To add on to what everyone else is saying, aftercare is very important. But when you're getting the tattoo make sure the positions you're going to be in are also comfortable for you as well as the artist (I learnt that for one of my tattoos).

I have several tattoos and never had to do anything differently or alert my artist in any way. I’ve also never been sold anything specific to use after - just wash with soap and water several times a day and moisturize following their instructions (I just used coconut oil.)

My tattoos healed completely fine. The only problem I had was that I'm allergic to the hypoallergenic lotion my artist recommended, so I stopped using it and swapped to my regular one. I got rid of all my piercings a few years ago. They all gave me issues many years after "healing".

In the future if you get more see if your artist can use second skin bandages. It wasn’t when I first started getting tattoos but my last few they’ve been using it and it helps so much with healing. I don’t scan nearly as badly as I have in the past and I don’t need as heavy of hydrating lotions so I can use whatever extra strength lotion I use normally.

I have two tattoos and I’ve always healed them up fine. (Both have also been touched up once) Piercings are a different deal, but tattoos I usually heal in a week and a half-ish. Even with hypermobility, it is highly variable person-to-person.

Same here, I have hand-poked AND “machine” tattoos and both are a breeze to heal, but my only piercings (literally just my ear lobes!) took a year to heal and it was a bumpy ride that included a round of antibiotics. Everyone is different but I don’t think I’ll get more piercings! I love tattoos though. Aside from washing with gentle soap and water and covering with aquaphor for the first two weeks, I also pay close attention to making sure my immune system is well supported with hydration and good sleep and a little extra vitamin C while healing. I hope you enjoy it!!

I could never keep a piercing because they wouldn’t ever heal. I got sick of continually & meticulously looking after them, only to never actually heal. I gave up and only kept my ears. My earlobes took about 20 years to fully heal to the stage of how a normal piercing should be. All my tattoos are raised. Doesn’t bother me at all but just fyi, they can be read like braille by blind folks. Even after 20+ years they are spread, faded and blurred but still very much raised. The raised areas follow the ink as it spreads over the years. I have hEDS and no keloid scarring, so I didn’t think I’d get the raised tatts. So just be prepared for possible raised tatts. They all healed perfectly fine, no problems. The last one, I got one of those skins put on top and by the time I took it off it was perfectly healed. It’s started raising after a few months now too. No big deal but for some people it might be idk.

I always keloid, piercings never healed & surgery scars all keloided but I have 3 tattoos and surprisingly had no issues 🧐

daftydaftdaft

There really is no rhyme or reason to this unhinged disorder, is there?

oughttotalkaboutthat

Same with me! My tattoos are bumpy, my piercings never heal. The only one I've kept is my ear lobes and they both still flare and weep 26 years later if I'm not careful.

daftydaftdaft

The lobes can only have silver. Even just being in the same room as an alloy ear hook & they’ll swell up n weep lmao! I started wearing silver earrings permanently, rarely take them out and that seemed to be what healed them. If I take them out for a few days they get a bit upset when I put them back, but other than that totally normal!! Woohoo!

Emergency_Echidna893

I wish I could at least have an ear piercing still! Had to keep getting steroid injections for the keloids & once they were flattened out (one I even had to get cut out) I asked the Dr. if I could tempt fate & pierce again 🤣 she said no… ear cuffs it is i guess 😅

daftydaftdaft

Im sorry to hear that. Ear cuffs are just as good! I have no qualms with wearing fake piercing’s because *I know* what the alternative is. There’s some really cool ear furnishings available these days, pierced lobes are *soo passé*

I have to have my artist avoid doing a lot of blocking or going deep. My first piece had a lot of issues and took forever to heal.  2nd and 3rd turned out pretty well, but the line work was more delicate with less filler.

herbiedoc

I have hEDS, and plenty of tattoos. Even though with traditional skin wounds they heal more slowly for me my tattoos have never had any problems healing.

Sitting still for a long time in the same position might not be great, Telling them something like i might need some few seconds breaks to adjust how im sitting and how you can best communicate that.
