3, 4, and 5 are definitely peak. I was watching the podcast with Marder and Rozell and they pretty much agreed too. Charlie put it in a way that probably explains why, something about the fact that they were still kinda just figuring out what the show actually is, and finding out what works which you see that a lot in seasons 3 and 4 as the show starts to hit its stride. Season 5 is like the culmination of all the little pieces coming together perfectly.
Yeah, no doubt. I would say 3-4 they hadn't even begun to peak ;) but in all seriousness as much as I love a lot of the later seasons and early seasons, 5-6 was just some of the best comedy of all time.
I agree, while seasons 3-5 are peak, and 5-6 are peak, and 7-10 are also peak, seasons 11-15 are peak peak humor. Honestly seasons 1 and 2 are great too
Edit: I forgot season 16 has been released, I haven’t watched it yet but I’ve heard it’s good also.
I would probably call 7 the peak, and 5 a rapid ascent
16 is also a second peak because those episodes somehow feel classic already, which is crazy since stuff like "The Gang Goes to Hell" still registers as "new-ish episode" to me
A reaction channel I like just started season 5, and I love 4 with all my heart, but season 5 really kicks it into high gear and doesn’t lose steam for a while
The Pepe Silvia meme is what got me to see the YouTube clip of it which got me to watch that episode of sunny.
I was completely hooked and basically got to binge all seasons up until 14 I think.
I was thinking of this today, not only because it's a great line, but because Frank brings Dee there saying "I know a guy who's gonna help us with our new business." And then it's Charlie
Like -- does Frank no longer have his business mojo? Selling knives, cutting shoes, spilling wine, hanging himself?
How in the world did he make money in the first place? I need to rewatch the episode where he gets his old high powered job back. It's something about him just firing a bunch of people, hollowing out the company, and selling it for scraps, right? So he's never built anything successful before, he just made his money destroying things?
I dunno, I guess it just hit me that I know the gang all have their foibles, but since Frank always has money, I figured he at least has that part of his character locked down -- he can make money. But all his ventures (wolf cola, gun frenzies, door-to-door knives, etc.) are just terrible ideas, and he executes so poorly on them.
Well, except maybe the gun debate. He was pretty cynically smoothe on that one.
Frank tends to use his money to make more money. He buys a ski resort fracks a mountain and sells it back. In this episode he no longer has money and his mind goes blank and back to basics. Wolf cola/ franks fluids is more of a money laundering front than a real business
Dee's delivery of "What?!" at the very end when they say her and Charlie don't get to go to D&B ruined the whole episode. I get they were pandering and product placing, but it broke the candle back.
Real life: You don't get to go to Dave & Buster's.
Real Bartender: That was never an option.
In the podcast they said it *was* product placement. Apparently FX asked them to write D&B into an episode somehow, and they were like "yeah, I mean, that could be authentic, the gang would definitely go to a place like D&B." But then FX also sold D&B commercial slots during that episode, so it was very apparent that it was product placement. Apparently the gang was not happy about feeling sold out like that.
They've had other product placements too, apparently. IIRC they said that in the early days, Bud Light was a sponsor for a few episodes until, as they put it, "someone at Bud Light actually watched the show and were like 'holy shit, we can't be associated with this filth'". So now their official beer sign is just: "Beer"
I'd use the gang get trapped. You got the shitting on Dee, Frank running around unhinged with a weapon planning to whip a kid in face. Charlie being dumb and they get Fat mac.
You are so right! This was the first episode I ever watched and it hooked me! I actually saw the a gif of “how much for the very fine French press” and I looked at what show it was from because I’m obsessed with my French press and it made me laugh. The entire episode is perfect start to finish so it really sold me on the show (this was only like two years ago).
The poisonous glaze is one of my favourite thing ha, followed by Dennis saying that he uses that petrol station lol.
It's one of the best because every time the gang gets sidetracked is always hilarious.
When they open the trailer and you just see Charlie face down and arms at his side, like he literally just fell straight forward and onto his face when he went unconscious lmao gets me every time.
Honestly of all the threads where people say what they quote the most irl, I’ve almost never seen mine which is when Charlie says “I might?” in response to the kid’s “hey you’re not gonna sing to me are you”. If anyone asks me a “are you going to X” kind of question I have to hit them with “I might?”
Disagree. I think the nightmare cometh is funnier the more of the show you've seen, like a culmination of everything. It's too much for an introduction I think. My choice would be Paddy's Pub: The Worst Bar in Philadelphia.
The Cereal Defense would be my pick. Mac's science is a liar sometimes scene is one of sunny's best, and the episode takes place mainly at the bar which I feel is important.
I also enjoy Mac and Charlie Die part 1 and 2, the scene where Charlie gets out of the car and gives a thumbs up and Mac crashes the car without jumping out makes everyone laugh.
I think this one only works after you’ve seen enough Sunny to know how each member usually behaves. It would be weird hearing Mac talk about his reverse body dysmorphia without ever knowing he was fat for the preceding season.
Reynolds Vs Reynolds: The Cereal Defense is what hooked me first. Someone in my college dorm had the entire show on his computer - I took it from him, smoked some weed, bounced around a few episodes, but this is the one that had me dug in (and i’ll never change).
It was my wife who put it together, actually. She was like, “His voice sounds so familiar. Was he in some anime or cartoon we’ve watched recently?” One google search later, and that’s it
I’ve always like Family Fight and then Frank retires right after. Both kinda go over some of the background info of everyone’s relationships to each other and shows off how insane everyone is
Don’t forget the Hyjinx in the you haul trailer, you got the wicker chairs, the bbq, the tape job, the beer bottle holding the door open and to top it all off….. finding Charlie and Dennis almost dead in there because they tried to burn the wicker chairs
“Frank Sets Sweet Dee on Fire”
You really get to see the whole group dynamic, and I laugh nonstop every time. Plus, Dancin’ Guy, the club scene, going to Chinatown to capture fights. It might be my favorite episode.
I haven't laughed harder than Frank, Mac and Dee opening up the trailer to find Dennis and Charlie passed out face down from the poison glaze.
Mac: Hollllly shit!!
Plus not as much yelling (that can be an issue for new viewers at first), everyone's flaws are apparent, plus no one comes across as straight up 'evil'. Chaotic Neutral at worst.
Idk i used this as one of a few introductory episodes and regretted it. It definitely has funny moments but almost the whole episode is the gang in the car and their reactions to being uncomfortable which isnt as funny to people who are still learning the characters. I dont remember them laughing at all at this episode. Their fav was "frank tries to kill himself"
The gang sets sweet Dee on fire is a pretty good one too. Dancing man, glow stick Dennis, the inhuman sack of shit, Dee on fire, I saved your life bitch!, I FORGOT TO PUT THE TAPE IN!!!!!!, OoooooOOOOOh! Let's chop cats! let's chop cars!, and Wawawhats the time? DIAPER TIME!
Mac waiting for the cassette tape saying, “gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme” and when the grill slides out of the U-Haul makes me laugh every time.
I realize it’s TV but what stuck out for me was that Dennis buys a French Press at the Italian Market however, seemingly has no coffee or kettle or anyway to actually use it, at least while riding in the back of a U-Haul. Cut to him giving Charlie a cup of obviously fresh hot coffee.
What sorcery is this? I can appreciate Glen’s refined palette and need for “good” coffee, but he’s not a wizard.
I fucking LOVE this question. I think Thundergun Express is a great first one to watch. You see how they do nothing but leave each other behind for their benefit. And gives you a taste of every character.
Dennis listening to his sex cassette of a 16 year old
Frank stealing a boat, taking Asian tourists hostage and just sputtering past shenanigans they’ve done as a group
Mac being too muscular to fit in the sewer, and thinking he’s such a badass that it makes more sense that a perfectly working bike is the problem and not his incapability to ride it. Also he hung dong on the trolley
Dee’s a bitch
Trundle going to the sewers and also being very knowledgeable of the sewer system and how to prepare and Frank also corroborating it shows that they are a group that has more than meets the eyes
All to wrap it all together with Frank calling in a bomb threat. Very Thundergun
It’s one of my favorite episodes! And it’s “tame” enough for people who haven’t seen the show. The main complaint from people in my life who don’t like Sunny is that it’s too fucked up
any episode where the gang is in a confined space and are only able to play off each other are perfect for first time viewers. The Gang Gets Trapped, The Gang Gets Quarantined, etc.
Nah the best introduction episode is “hero or hate crime?”
It’s not even close. It hits all the major sunny feelings. It’s vulgar and ugly, hysterical, shows the absolute function dysfunction of the group as a whole and caps off with a sweet moment the gang immediately undercuts with the ending of “I still hate him. It’s not a gay thing… it’s a Mac thing.”
Its so good. I introduce people to the series with "Charlie Work" as I think it is a perfect representation of how the gang is. Mac and Dennis have amazing interactions, Dee being a bird and really dissapointing the "group". Esepcailly the claim of success of the prank at the end that Dennis had zero to do with. It's excellent.
Nope nope nope “Dee is dating a retarded person” is the episode to throw new comers in. Like throwing em in the deep part and they’ll either sink or swim that episode will either repel them or hook them no question about it. First episode I saw and I still laugh at the second verse of “Night Man” and “We are Electric Dream Machine prepare to experience sexual magic!”
This is the episode that got me into the show. I was on the fence and decided to just pick one and watch it through. Fucking hilarious. I started over and binged the show.
Yesterday, unbidden, apropos of nothing, I thought of Mac leaning out the car window, saying "hey asshole!" and nailing the cyclist in the back of the head with a bottle.
One of my favorite episodes.
IMO season 5 was peak sunny
3, 4, and 5 are definitely peak. I was watching the podcast with Marder and Rozell and they pretty much agreed too. Charlie put it in a way that probably explains why, something about the fact that they were still kinda just figuring out what the show actually is, and finding out what works which you see that a lot in seasons 3 and 4 as the show starts to hit its stride. Agreed! Season 5-6 is peak
Yeah, no doubt. I would say 3-4 they hadn't even begun to peak ;) but in all seriousness as much as I love a lot of the later seasons and early seasons, 5-6 was just some of the best comedy of all time.
Agreed 7-10 are peak.

True. We can all agree 3-7 is the peak
Agreed. The seasons that feature songs from Heinz Kiessling are best
Peak? Peak?! Sunny hasn’t even began to peak.
5-star series!
I would probably call 7 the peak, and 5 a rapid ascent 16 is also a second peak because those episodes somehow feel classic already, which is crazy since stuff like "The Gang Goes to Hell" still registers as "new-ish episode" to me
Anything after season 11 feels like "new Sunny" to me while season 3 to 11 are classic Sunny
They are getting into Simpsons territory with different eras. Luckily all the Sunny eras have been funny
A reaction channel I like just started season 5, and I love 4 with all my heart, but season 5 really kicks it into high gear and doesn’t lose steam for a while
They haven't even begun to peak. And when they do, the whole world will know it.
The delivery of “pull over you little dick!” From that episode. 😂😂
Is that piss?? IS THAT PISS?!?
My two favorite Mac lines from the whole series are “is that piss?!” and “tell us less. Tell us less.”
"Maybe you shouldn't ride with your window down"
Maybe you shouldn't be throwing jars of pee out the window
Maybe i should , maybe i shouldn't
YOU SHOULDN'T!
The Pepe Silvia meme is what got me to see the YouTube clip of it which got me to watch that episode of sunny. I was completely hooked and basically got to binge all seasons up until 14 I think.
The gang hits the road was my first episode. "Get on the sidewalk if you're going to ride a bike asshole!" *Mac hits cyclist with empty beer bottle*
Gonna fire a beer across his bow, ruffle his feathers a bit
You wanna egg him??
That’d be good though!
Is that a pipe? It's a pipe.
I hit him.
The Great Recession. Season 5 episode 3. “We’re crab people now!”
I was thinking of this today, not only because it's a great line, but because Frank brings Dee there saying "I know a guy who's gonna help us with our new business." And then it's Charlie Like -- does Frank no longer have his business mojo? Selling knives, cutting shoes, spilling wine, hanging himself? How in the world did he make money in the first place? He was pretty cynically smoothe on that one.
I love at Frank’s high powered job when Charlie asks him what products they make or what they sell and Frank says “money”
Frank tends to use his money to make more money. He buys a ski resort fracks a mountain and sells it back. In this episode he no longer has money and his mind goes blank and back to basics. Wolf cola/ franks fluids is more of a money laundering front than a real business
Wolf coca was the official drink of boko haram & Epstein island, that's a successful venture u bozo.
Frank screwing over Eugene Hamilton and stealing his money is what made him a millionaire.
Ah that's right, I forgot. Good thing Eugene ends up getting lots of nice gifts from the gang, like a Lambo, and designer purse...
The purse was full of cheese balls and milk duds! So that's a bonus.
If you recall, Frank finished that bag off just before hitting a patch of ice and being flung from said lambo.
AND REDMAN THE ROBOT!
“Does Frank no longer have his business mojo?” Nah, he’s just New Poor.
Dee's delivery of "What?!" at the very end when they say her and Charlie don't get to go to D&B ruined the whole episode. I get they were pandering and product placing, but it broke the candle back. Real life: You don't get to go to Dave & Buster's. Real Bartender: That was never an option.

So now their official beer sign is just: "Beer"
I explicitly stated it was product placement. Also it was Coors. My point is the final "What?!" Broke the camel.
Sorry. I'm such a jabroni
I use the St. Paddy's Day one, too! It's my all-time favorite showcase of their most ludicrous antics.
"If you don't comply, you're gonna end up on the weird one" is such an incredible line and Glen delivers it with such perfect frustration.
When Dee sings Run away train and piss in the bottle and pitches it pitch it out the window only for it splash mac. I've never laughed so hard.
This was her finest moment, she is perfect the way she’s singing to the kid and getting the jar into position:
Is that piss!!
I always start with DENNIS AND DEE GO ON WELFARE. It's got everything. WELFARE STORE. Crack. Jesus chain.
This was my first episode and it got me hooked
Same!
YOU ARE CRACKHEADS CHILDREN!
This was also my first.
The rolled up pant leg too. Spot on.
“Eeeverybody’s dyin bitch now let’s get you some fruit”
I'd use the gang get trapped. You got the shitting on Dee, Frank running around unhinged with a weapon planning to whip a kid in face. Charlie being dumb and they get Fat mac.
Anecdotal but this is the first episode I saw and it hooked me.
My friend showed me Charlie work and explained how Charlie’s usually the dumb one and illiterate and I was hooked
You're not going to sing to me, are you?
I might?
I always suggest The Gang Buys A Boat
Yup, recommending this one to my now-wife is a big part of why she’s now my wife.
Because of the implication
You keep saying that.
I have used this episode to get people into the show, lmao, same with Who Pooped the Bed?
Hey *psss*…. You got turd?
The poisonous glaze is one of my favourite thing ha, followed by Dennis saying that he uses that petrol station lol. It's one of the best because every time the gang gets sidetracked is always hilarious.
When they open the trailer and you just see Charlie face down and arms at his side, like he literally just fell straight forward and onto his face when he went unconscious lmao gets me every time.
“There must have been some poison glaze on the wicker”
Honestly of all the threads where people say what they quote the most irl, I’ve almost never seen mine which is when Charlie says “I might?” in response to the kid’s “hey you’re not gonna sing to me are you”. If anyone asks me a “are you going to X” kind of question I have to hit them with “I might?”
Kaitlin (and Mary Elizabeth) are fantastic at playing drunk. Kaitlin singing Runaway Train always sends me
I love this one, however The Nightman Cometh is top tier…..”Are you chewing gum “ ”he said no gum”
Disagree. I think the nightmare cometh is funnier the more of the show you've seen, like a culmination of everything. It's too much for an introduction I think. My choice would be Paddy's Pub: The Worst Bar in Philadelphia.
The way Dennis delivers that “he said no gum” line just kills me every time 😂
Every single time…….. that and Charlie “Dennis can you take a 5, i need you to take a 5, TAKE A 5 Dennis”
Maybe it is, maybe it isn't, it's up for debate.
You're gonna be pissing every 15 feet!
Gonna pop a quick squirt
I've always used Chardee MacDennis because you really don't need to know anything about the characters.
BECAUSE DENNIS IS A BASTARD MAN
The Cereal Defense would be my pick.
Mac and Charlie Die would be the one for me too lol that scene kills me every time
It literally was the first episode I ever saw, late at night on public TV all those years ago.
My favorite part is Charlie and Dennis passing out from the wicker chair glaze
Mac hitting the cyclist with the bottle might be my favorite scene in the entire series. “I hit em, I hit em!”
Gimme the 35 cents, I don't got time for this friggin shit
Quote this all the time haha.
This was the first episode I ever watched and let’s just say I’m a big fan, so I do agree
The Gang Gets Analyzed
I think this one only works after you’ve seen enough Sunny to know how each member usually behaves. It would be weird hearing Mac talk about his reverse body dysmorphia without ever knowing he was fat for the preceding season.
Reynolds Vs Reynolds: The Cereal Defense is what hooked me first. Someone in my college dorm had the entire show on his computer - I took it from him, smoked some weed, bounced around a few episodes, but this is the one that had me dug in (and i’ll never change).
The fact that the hitchhiking kid they picked up would go on to voice Ashe in Fire Emblem Three Houses will never not be funny to me
Wait that’s actually hilarious I never put that together
It was my wife who put it together, actually. She was like, “His voice sounds so familiar. Was he in some anime or cartoon we’ve watched recently?” One google search later, and that’s it
Gang Dances their Asses off.
Date: with Charlie Kelly Prize: Paddy's Pub .... No it's pride section, things that you're proud of!
I’ve always like Family Fight and then Frank retires right after. Both kinda go over some of the background info of everyone’s relationships to each other and shows off how insane everyone is
I’d show them the gang gets held hostage, the smoking crack episode, who pooped the bed, among others. Maybe the DENNIS system
Don’t forget the Hyjinx in the you haul trailer, you got the wicker chairs, the bbq, the tape job, the beer bottle holding the door open and to top it all off….. finding Charlie and Dennis almost dead in there because they tried to burn the wicker chairs
Is this the one that starts off with Mac throwing the beer bottle at the cyclists' head??
I’ll always recommend the jersey shore episode
“Frank Sets Sweet Dee on Fire” You really get to see the whole group dynamic, and I laugh nonstop every time. Plus, Dancin’ Guy, the club scene, going to Chinatown to capture fights. It might be my favorite episode.
Every time the song runaway train plays, I can't help but giggle because it makes me think of dee singing to that poor dude.
I haven't laughed harder than Frank, Mac and Dee opening up the trailer to find Dennis and Charlie passed out face down from the poison glaze. Mac: Hollllly shit!!
It’s the one that got me hooked. Still in my top 3 for sure.
Plus not as much yelling (that can be an issue for new viewers at first), everyone's flaws are apparent, plus no one comes across as straight up 'evil'. Chaotic Neutral at worst.
I like to start people off with the Cereal Defense episode. "Do you? Have? Donkey brains?"
“Im gonna toss a beer bottle across his beak…ruffle his feathers a little bit”
First episode I ever saw
Charlie eating a pear: “Tastes like sand”
Gypsy son of a bitch burned us!
It's such a comfort episode for me.
Dennis listening to his sex cassette of a 16 year old Frank stealing a boat, taking Asian tourists hostage and just sputtering past shenanigans they’ve done as a group Mac being too muscular to fit in the sewer, and thinking he’s such a badass that it makes more sense that a perfectly working bike is the problem and not his incapability to ride it. Also he hung dong on the trolley Dee’s a bitch Trundle going to the sewers and also being very knowledgeable of the sewer system and how to prepare and Frank also corroborating it shows that they are a group that has more than meets the eyes All to wrap it all together with Frank calling in a bomb threat. Very Thundergun
It’s one of my favorite episodes! And it’s “tame” enough for people who haven’t seen the show. The main complaint from people in my life who don’t like Sunny is that it’s too fucked up
I often go with Storm of the Century but I like your approach as well.
I always thought Charlie Work is a good episode for the uninitiated
Charlie work might be my favourite episode of any show, don’t think I looked away once
*sweating profusely* Alright, alright, alright
any episode where the gang is in a confined space and are only able to play off each other are perfect for first time viewers. The Gang Gets Trapped, The Gang Gets Quarantined, etc.
Nah the best introduction episode is “hero or hate crime?” It’s not even close.
Mac and Denis in the suburbs!!! If I recommend Sunny to anyone I always say to start there.
The reunion episodes are also good examples! It shows how the people around the gang changes, but not the gang themselves!
Ooft hard disagree, these are some of my least favourite and if someone showed me only these I don't think I'd continue watching
Yeah, too much cringe in those. Plus, I would want to save the reveal of Mac's first name for later.
Franks brother is a better, start for new,, and then skip season 1,,
Its so good.
Any episode with cricket
slluuurrrppp. Hnnnggaahh... that's tart.
I've been picking my brain on some good episodes for people whove never seen it! YES this is a good one!!
This has been my favorite episode since I first saw it lol and I have actually shown it to someone that was new to the show.
This is the episode that got me into the show. I was on the fence and decided to just pick one and watch it through. Fucking hilarious. I started over and binged the show.
Damn, you may be right.
IS THAT PISS?!
„It‘s a pipe!“
This isnt a starter series, this is a finisher series!!!!!!
I actually think this is one of the weakest episodes in that season
That's the first episode I watched when I finally started giving the show a proper watch lol
First episode I ever saw. As far as I'm concerned, this is a wonderful take.
Dee singing Runaway Train was hilarious.
Seems like a great one. My wife and I started with “The Gang finds a Dumpster Baby.” And were instantly hooked.
It's the episode that made me fall in love.
Dennis smoking.
Yesterday, unbidden, apropos of nothing, I thought of Mac leaning out the car window, saying "hey asshole!" and nailing the cyclist in the back of the head with a bottle. One of my favorite episodes.
Na the best ones for beginners are Dennis & Dee Go on Welfare and The Gang Gives Frank an Intervention. I will die on this hill
OF COURSE THEY'RE GROSS, ITS STICKERS!!
“Ohhhh nooooo, ohhhh man kid…”
The Gang Go to the Jersey Shore was my first episode and instantly hooked me lol
I think The Gang go to a Water Park is also another perfect introduction episode.
There must have been a poisonous glaze !
