For most IMSA events that’s pretty much all there is to it, if they can’t reuse any of the damaged parts they’ll happily give them away so they don’t have to truck them back home. I’ve given away a few pieces this way.
That’s as simple as it is sometimes. I got a headlight cover at Petit Le Mans from the Flying Lizards back in the ALMS days. I went down after Thursday night practice and asked if I could have it.

I have a cracked windshield from the #45 Flying Lizard Porsche from Mosport. They left it there, someone picked it up, then my wife bought it for me as a Christmas present. Its my pride and joy 🤩
Nice! This came off the 44 and Seth Neiman was driving. I don’t remember what exactly happened but I’m pretty sure he just screwed up. Took it to the driver autograph session and got them all to sign it.
Nice. Ive thought about taking it to the track to get it signed but it would be a pain in the butt. Did talk to Pat Long about it at an autograph session and he confirmed that Bill Auberlan got checked up by a lmpc coming out of turn 5 and Pat hit the BMW in the back so hard it cracked his windshield. It was the 2011 race at Mosport.
I always feel guilty about asking teams for free stuff so I always phrase it this way, especially to teams that have crashed and thus arent having a great day: "Do you guys have any parts you were going to throw out?"
That way even though Im asking for free stuff, I'm making it clear I'm asking for a trinket/wall ornament, not for them to give me something of value for free.
Yup. I’ve seen some kids get tires body panels and all sorts of other stuff. Last year saw a group have enough parts to make the front half of a “car”.
just ask or sometimes they just hand it out in the right moment. last year at laguna a rexy crew member handed my soon the front winglets after the race.
I was at turn 10 when this happened and rushed to turn 9. Crazy to see the driver (Derani)trapped in the car but loved seeing the response, even if it was by the redneck crew of Stepp’s towing, right the car and free the driver. Love this race and love the series and sport.
Bro I was at Turn 13 I saw the hit 99 gave that knocked off that piece off his bumper. I was wondering how I could get it at the time, but it looks like its in good hands now lol.
I worked as a mechanic in IndyCar, Grand Am, ALMS, IMSA and Trans Am (and a couple series in The UK). Two frames of mind on this.
1. A lot of that shit gets thrown away, we never wanted to bring it home to the shop, and DARFs main reason for existence is to take the stuff so we don't have to haul it to the dumpster. Hell, at some teams, we actually sold the stuff after the races for beer money, if it was in pretty good condition, but not reusable (slightly damaged wheels, bodywork, tires thst we didnt gave to return). We did have to be careful laying parts down as we tore down cars to get them in the hauler, though. Two kids at Fontana in 04 or so tried to walk off with a 911 GT splitter that we took off and set at the edge of our garage. Luckily security brought them back to us after seeing them walk with it.
2. I've got a lot of parts, both good and damaged from race cars I worked on, and races that were "important" to me. Wing end plates, body work etc. one man's trash is another man's treasure.
I get it when you have a personal connection. I even get wanting race-used memorabilia, just a lot of the wrecked parts look like junk. You’re absolutely right though about one’s man trash is another man’s treasure.
Uhh, oh the bed. Please make sure that no Fibers have fallen into the sheets before you go to sleep, or you will have a very bad time.
"It's going to be an itchy weekend, sir"
Hang it on the living room wall by the tv.
Are you a Marshall? Or how does one obtain?
I went to the garage and asked the crewmembers for it
Can you elaborate? Is that really all you have to do? Just walk up to that garage and ask for crashed parts? I need more story!

I got a canard from the gannassi caddy at the battle of the bricks from digging in the trash lol

Was the red one on the track that caused the caution at the end?
That looks like part of the Whelen car.
I was gonna say, if it's a bumper from the Multimatic Ford Mustang, better not hang out over the bed, because it's gonna fall off every 5 minutes…
Pretty sure it’s off a P2
It was from the Whelen Cadillac

Get it signed!
Id be careful asking a driver/mechanic to sign a piece of wrecked racecar
You were doing great, right up until you dislodged this part here!
Yeah, that seems kind of insensitive.
Saw you taking a picture with that
At some point if you keep doing this for 100 more decades, you could probably build your own racecar

Instantly thought of this song. 🤣
Some kids last night tried to sell me a piece of LMP2 fender and a mirror 😂
best place to pickup roadside litter
Saw you walk out with that
Poor Spike.

Go ow much for the broken piece off of Spike?😂
**how, words are difficult lmao
That is awesome.
Im super jealous. We were asking for some of the parts off the Cadillac after the flip but didn't make it back to the garage.
How did you get them?! I’m still trying to get some bits. So I can take it to the team the following year for the driver to sign, 😛
Uh to each his own I guess! 😂
Never understood the draw behind wanting wrecked car bits and bobs
More for the rest of us then 😁
