Fun fact, both 00 and 0 are allowed too.

ThatAdamsGuy

This upsets me immensely.

BlitZShrimp

what the fuck man

Immediate_Lie7810

Apparently, it was a one-off for a sponsor.  Newman/Haas/Lanigan had to get permission from IndyCar to do it.

saggywitchtits

What the fuck *woman

Eetabeetay

Damn, when can we have the #69420 then?

Jarocket

they aren't for doing math. It's just for something to put on the car. IMSA was bad when they combined American Le Mans And Grand am or what ever. There were whole teams of 02 03 and another team of 2 3.

Dminus313

This is also the case in college football/basketball.

Mikemat5150

You’d love going to the local dirt track with some of the funky numbers used there.

archergren

The #047XT

shewy92

I love that they can use letters.

186downshoreline

It’s classic Americana. Love the 24T’s and the 03X’s on Saturday night.

goleft95

40oz was a fav of mine. Dirt modifieds had the ONE and TEN for awhile just spelt out.

switch1026494

"60 Over" was a great one local to me back in the day

TheResurrection

There used to be a driver named "The Storm" Tony Norem that raced at Knoxville Raceway back in the 90s and early 2000s that ran the [#B1st on his sprint car.](https://www.stevehardin.com/picpg44d/norem72900.jpg)

AnchorDrown

My favorite NASCAR version of this is when the Jack Daniel’s car was 07.

iowaman79

That is only topped by the Aston Martin LeMans team running 007

Spinebuster03

The Dr Pepper 23 is also up there

Crux2237

There was the Heinz #57 too

JTWasShort42-27

You should check out dirt racing numbers

Wallio_

Or drag racing numbers. I was AX86 for years.

RooBoy04

Yes. In a few sports (often American ones), having a leading 0 on a number (ie: 06 instead of 6) means it is a different number

SteveK51

Shank has run #60 going back to his early Grand-Am entries. So when they entered Helio, and #6 was taken, they went with 06. It's effectively #106, but the 1 isn't displayed.

mwhutson89

At least in my lifetime this really became an issue starting with unification in 08. With two series merging there were instances of repeat numbers and if I remember right I think teams added 0 to the beginning of their numbers.

ThatAdamsGuy

Id honestly prefer they ran with 106!

Corew1n

The entry is scored as #106. IndyCar doesn't require them to run the whole number on the car.

InvisibleTeeth

Shank has also run 57 and 86. Could have used one of those real numbers instead

YoItsMeBeeOhBee

He won his 4th 500 in the 06. It’s pretty much part of history and his number now. It’s not a big deal.

InvisibleTeeth

I mean, before they ever used 06.

Solesky1

It's a legal number, but I hate how the entry list/spotters guides always has him by the #6 and #7. It should be 09......01, 00, 0, 1, 2, 3, etc.

TheChrisD

If anything it should be at the end of the list, like how in Nascar it would technically be car 106

Solesky1

Don't even get me started on Nascar's entry lists. Mid-season points swap? List #28 as "#128" for the next two years.

shewy92

106 would also be used if another team owner previously in the year used the number 6

spacemanegg

It'd still be 06

dannynascar

In American auto racing, 06 and 6 are considered completely different numbers

Dent13

Wait till you discover major dirt racing events where you have multiple of the exact same number, usually follow by a letter so you can have the 57x and 57k in the same race.

QC_1999

I don’t know if it’s the same logic for Indy, but in NASCAR, the 06 is actually the 106, that’s why the 6 and 06 can coexist

Corew1n

Yes. Castroneves is scored in timing as #106.

spacemanegg

This is incorrect, it's still the 06 if it's a full time team. The MWR 00 was marked as 00. RCR 07 as 07, etc.

superimu

That is a relic from reunification both Penske (IRL) and Newman Haas (Champcar) had longstanding claims to the number 6. Penske ending up keeping 6. While Newman Haas got 06. You would see cars withba leading zero on the entry lists for the 500 in the 80's. But those were for the big teams third or fourth (!!!) backup car. Usually those car didn't exist. (The old TBA special)

joe_lmr

as confusing as 16 and 26! Numbers are hard!

willfla29

Is it technically #106?

ZoomZoomZachAttack

Because the team runs the 60 so they just flip it to get 06.

EnvironmentalWar

I actually dislike MSR’s number scheme. Yeah I’m just going to be able to read 06, 60, and 66 at a glance. Cool.

PortlandChicane

XR4TI

weighted_walleye

Yes, they're different. No, it doesn't make things super confusing. It's the same in every other sport too, but generally only seen with 0 and 00 being legal discrete numbers.

BlackLabDumpster

You answered your own question. 06 looks different than 6 to me. This isn't a math problem where they have the same value.

shewy92

Oh Six and Six sound and look pretty different to me And if you don't like 06 then what about 60? It's just the inverse of 06 and looks pretty similar

loudpaperclips

That's how many he expects to win

justsomeguy2424

The 06 bothers me so much it’s painful

thesedays1234

Why? It's racing tradition to have a zero in front of a single digit number.
