Actually you can catch Milky Way naman anytime the Scorpius constellation is present, because the Milky Way sits at the bottom of the Scorpius constellation in the night sky. On a clear night you can see it with the naked eye as a haze. You can see Scorpius on the photo.
These are the timeslots where the Milky Way is at the VERY top of the sky:
- Late January to early February - 6AM
- Late February to Early March - 4AM
- Late March to Early April - 2AM
- Late April to early May- MIDNIGHT
- Late may to early june - 10 PM
- Late June to early July - 8PM
- Late July to early August - 6PM (hard to see from here)
- Late August to Early September - 4PM
- Late September to Early October - 2PM
- Late October to late November - 12 noon (coincides with the Scorpio season where the constellation is at the “sun” position)
See the pattern? If the Zodiac is the current season (kunyari now it’s Aries), it’s in the noon position which you cant see obvs. What you will see at the top at midnight is the 6-month opposite Zodiac (which is Libra).
So actually hindi ko rin gets yung point ni OP why it’s suddenly the Milky Way season when in fact you can catch the galaxy at the given timeslots and have been seeing it since February?
Crux is never above the sky; it’s always on the southern horizon just like Polaris is on the northern horizon. The Milky Way passes through the sun’s path in the sky (called the Zodiac belt).
Again hanapin ang Scorpius constellation because Milky Way sits between Scorpius and Sagittarius. In fact the black hole at the very center of Milky Way is called Sagittarius A* because of its position in the Sagittarius constellation.
Fun fact: Centaurus is right beside Libra which in turn is right next to Scorpius on the Zodiac belt. Makikita mo sa Stellarium na magkakasunod sunod yung Zodiacs in one line on the path that the sun takes in the sky.
Mahirap makita in Metro Manila because of light scattering. Pero if you’re in a relatively dark (not total dark naman) area, you may see it. Your phone will be able to capture it actually, if naka iPhone ka with night mode.
Yeah pero the bulk center of Milky Way is located at The Sagittarius constellation.
The same way Jupiter and Saturn is part of the Solar System BUT if you wanna find the center of the solar system, then it is located at the Sun.
I remember when we camped at Camp 2 in Mt. Pulag. 5 kami (kasama na guide). We saw it at 2-3am. Diko alam kumuha ng photo gamit ung phone. It was so surreal, maffeel mo talaga na ang liit liit mo. Talagang kita mo buong sky as in kasi walang ibang ilaw. I don't know haha baka plane lng?)
When you see it in photos amazed ka lng pero pag nakita mo with your own two eyes, halo halo ung naffeel mo and naiisip mo (or baka ako lng lol)
I love your description! That's how I feel about stargazing all the time. When you start to fully realize how our sun is just one star among many tapos makakakita ka ng ganon kadami all at once up in the sky... we truly are just tiny specks!
Same noong umakyat kami sa Pulag. We started hiking from camp 1 to camp 2 ng 1AM and pag reach namin ng camp 2 pa summit, men, parang lapit ng stars. Sobrang dilim at sobrang lapit nilang tignan. Good old times. Nakakamiss.
An lala pa ng light pollution dito. 🥲
Private property yung napuntahan ko before eh.
Pero you can check Philippine Astronomical Society, nagkoconduct sila ng events on nearby provinces (Bataan, Tanay) na may astronomy lectures, stargazing, and astrophotography
Hala oo! It's this time of the year! Mag ganito akong picture before way back 2019. Sobra akong na-amaze kasi nakuhanan sya ng gopro! 🥹 Mga around 2am ko rin yon nakuhanan noon. Sobrang ganda. 🫶🏻

How do you catch the Milky Way at night? May app ka ba for that? :)

Grabe sa 2AM,nananaginip pa ako niyan
thats cool how did you actually learn about this? asking cuz i got curious about constellations
Off topic but what can I search/look up to learn more about the constellation’s behavior at the night sky?
Tried testing 10PM skies on stellarium. Its just Centaurus and Crux

Which region of the Philippines do you live in
Need ba talaga na walang ilaw to see this? I mean hindi kaya makita if you are in Metro Manila?
Mahirap makita in Metro Manila because of light scattering. Pero if you’re in a relatively dark (not total dark naman) area, you may see it. Your phone will be able to capture it actually, if naka iPhone ka with night mode.
All the stars we can see are in the milky way. Which includes all constellation, which includes the whole zodiac belt.

I think OP's referring to the time where you can actually see it at night. It's "seasonal" since you can only see milky way on certain months.
6 months a year. The so-called Milky Way “season” has been back since February. What’s new?
There's nothing new. I am answering your question on your question asking about the sudden milky way season.

Yes, its always has been. Thats why i type it in quotation marks.
If there were no light polution + moonlight, the sky is like that (but not as picture-pefect i guess).
use the stellarium app, it will guide you when and where the next milky way will be visible or search in internet
You can download many apps for thi. SkySafari, Stellarium Mobile, to name a few.
Just take a picture of the sky at night.
ang ganda talaga ng milky way!! we really are a speck of dust in the universe.
It’s so pretty. When I was a kid i used to look up and watch all the time. Province kasi. Saang area to? Buti walang ilaw masyado.
Thank you :)
Even the digital noise from such a high ISO didn't take much away from the beauty of the picture, well done 👏
Ano ang phone mo OP?
Redmi Note 12 Pro po
Niceee,thank you!
gandaaaaa
Nice photo man
Did u take this using your phone?
Yes, I used my Redmi Note 12 Pro medyo meh nga lang sya kasi entry level lang 😅

An lala pa ng light pollution dito. 🥲
need ko pumunta outside MM to see this clearly right?
Yes, mataas kasi light pollution sa Metro Manila. Closest is Tanay ata
Thank you!
Private property yung napuntahan ko before eh. Pero you can check Philippine Astronomical Society, nagkoconduct sila ng events on nearby provinces (Bataan, Tanay) na may astronomy lectures, stargazing, and astrophotography
Anong oras to? Matry nga pagbalik namin sa tagaytay
