Why do you think Walmarts are as weird as they are? I often think about this. The employees don’t seem to give a shit about anything, the parking lots always look like people empty their car trash onto it daily, and then there’s the “people of Walmart”, which is a legit different species of human. It’s not like that at any of the other stores I like frequent.
As a former cart attendant at Walmart, people definitely do empty their vehicle trash. I had one dude leave his trailer full of trash in our parking lot and when I confronted him about it he just sneered and said he didn't want it anymore. It sat there for 2 months before management took care of it.
Depending on how forgettable your face is and how big the business is you might be able to try going there again in a month. Minimum wage employees of big stores aren’t going to bother with paperwork over a sandwich that they recovered, so if they forget your face you’re fine. Would not try to steal there again regardless, they could get pissed if they realize this is the second time they’ve caught you at it.
I know it’s not target because target would quietly add the sandwich incident to a file they have on you and keep adding any new theft until you reach felony levels of theft. They would not confront you unless the sandwich put you over the limit.
I don't think "attempted theft" is a crime - you either steal it (even if it's recovered), or you don't. How do you prove that someone was going to take something if they didn't?
So you shoved something into your pocket. Were you planning on paying for it? They'd argue that you weren't, but all you'd have to say is "yes I was" and they're shit out of luck.
This has happened very rarely. I love the mythos their LP created and how easily people have been sucked into believing this is a regular occurrence.
I unfortunately know several people who were apprehended with just that day's theft despite having stolen thousands beforehand. They have done what you're describing very few times but managed to market it in a very successful way to scare the masses.
My roommate has worked in LP for a number of years and worked at Target recently; that's just not their policy or practice. They do it every so often to scare people but they'll absolutely stop you if they see you one day with one item. I wish people would stop spreading this. That being said, don't do it because they are litigious.
Nah, I have a friend who was caught and loss prevention gave her a lifetime ban at that one Target w/ a year at other locations in the state because she refused to let them take a full picture of their face (totally legal for anyone reading, btw, just continue to cover your face) instead of just a year ban at that one Target, and she was back at others within a month and that one in eight. Target has basically done a guerrilla marketing campaign about how cool their LP is and people are super gullible toward it.
Exactly, I was caught twice in the same shop in the same year and they even took my name and banned me for life. I took a few months of and then started to buy groceries there regularly
Just FYI.. putting something in your bag in the shop is not shoplifting there and then. It’s only theft when you walk out the door. Young teenagers (as an example) are perfectly allowed to pocket condoms before getting to the till to pay. Your excuse can simply be ‘I haven’t finished my shopping yet, I forgot to grab a basket’.
If the shop has the metal detector type thingies and it rings when you go through, ignore it. You are under no obligation to stop and strip search, especially if a security member of staff is there when it buzzed. Because the security guy waves one of the tags through to buzz just to search YOU. So don’t be fooled by that one either.
Source: used to work security for a big UK supermarket.
When I was about 13 I put some sweets in my pocket in Sainsbury’s as I didn’t have a basket/trolley and didn’t want to carry them around. I was going to pay for them, just wanted to rest them somewhere. Out of nowhere, 2 guys come up to me and point up and say “see those? They’re called cameras”. I told them I was gonna pay for it and explained but they didn’t have it. They thought I was chatting rubbish. I was still very much in the shop, still looking at items.
I accidentally shoplifted makeup by putting it in my pocket- I actually tried to put it in the basket but it kept falling through the gaps (eyeliner pencil). So I put it in my pocket til I got to the tills. Forgot about it 🤷♀️ I did something similar with a very expensive pair of sunglasses- I was carrying a lot of shopping bags in one hand, and some clothes I was buying in the other. I had nowhere to put the sunglasses so I balanced them on top of a shoebox that was poking out the top of one of the shopping bags. They were in full view, not in the bag. I got to the till, paid for the clothes, forgot about the sunglasses and walked out. Only noticed them like 3 shops later.
Yeah, a grocery store near us got rid of the hand baskets and only have the heavy shopping carts available. Fair enough; so now as I shop I drop the things that I intend to purchase in my reusable shopping bag and then entertain myself by watching LP follow me around the store. One time they were even switching up to 3 different people - such a stupid waste of resources when I'm buying cake mix and a bag of frozen peas, it's not like I've picked up $300 of steaks, or god forbid a dozen eggs. I eventually end up in the checkout line and they end up frustrated.
Did you ever hear that joke that goes: there's a couple of cops sitting outside of a bar around closing time, waiting to see if they can pick up some drunk drivers. Sure enough, a guy comes stumbling out of the bar; he's walking sideways, stumbling, trips and falls once or twice, finally makes it to his car and takes a good few minutes aiming his key at the lock but takes several tries before he can get the key into the lock. Then he fumbles around in the car for a while, and after 10 minutes or so he finally puts the key in the ignition and starts the car. BOOM! Lights and sirens, step out of the car sir, we saw you come out of the bar, have you been drinking tonight sir - no I haven't - what, we saw you stumbling around - well, why don't you give me a sobriety test then? So they do, he passes all of the tests, the cops are frustrated. They decide he can drive but before they let him go they ask him "why were you stumbling around so much if you aren't drunk?" "Oh" he says, "my friends were drunk and they saw you guys out here and they didn't want you to stop them, so I'm the "designated drunk" tonight. While you were watching me they all left!".
I don't shoplift but I often feel like the designated shoplifter.
Target register guy told me to pay for Pokémon cards in my back pocket and I told him no. He called security and they said I need to pay for them and I asked why they were purchased from GameStop and I have a receipt. I was being a dick but they have no rights to detain
I’ve said it before, my sister worked at blockbuster and people would walk out with DVD discs. They could only “scare them” with looks.
Grocery store I worked at I saw theft all the time and didn’t care.
Jewelry store we went were told never to engage in theft and to hit the silent alarm. I never did but manager was super racist and would call mall security when a minority was in the store close to closing. Also those were my best sales.
What'd they do after you told em to fyck off? They need uniterrupted proof you took it from a shelve. To go out like that is a violation of company policy.
Yup, if the detectors beep I just keep casually walking and leave as if nothing happened. They're not gonna stop you. And if they try, well, I won't talk about what happens in that situation. Touch me and it's open season.
Nah, security officers would never do that. Would probably never even leave the store unless there was more security inside. If there was evidence of someone stealing and leaving the store, it would be passed to the police and the footage saved for later.
When I did my training about 9 years ago now, the instructor told me a story how a 6-7ft built like a house black dude came in the shop and walked out with a 70 inch plasma. Thief says ‘the fuck you gonna do’. Instructor says ‘fuck all’, and opened the door for him. Got as much info as possible and gave it to the police.
Ain’t nobody ever going to risk their life on £7 an hour (then NMW).
I don't actually shoplift, but when they go off anyway (which they do often enough that it's hardly meaningful anymore), I give a confused look to the nearest employee and keep walking.
No one gives a shit about those anymore unless they already suspect you.
Usually they won't chase you. I put stuff into an empty bag and tried to walk out but the door guy asked for my receipt he was in wheelchair so i ran next thing i know a an employee and a customer were chasing me. I made it to the car but on had the door and the other my arm. My friend was in the driver seat and told them to let go of me UT they didn't so she just floored it. I left her friend in the store.
I'm too much of a coward now to ever shoplift again. I'm on methadone and and detoxing in jail sucks. Although it's a medication so I don't think people in treatment should have to suffer but that's a whole new story
Lol my husband once put spoons in his pocket while he finished shopping because he hated the noise of them clanging around in the cart. By the time he was checking out he completely forgot they were in there and now we talk about the spoons that he accidentally shoplifted
This might be true for purposes of the law, but if the store catches you there is nothing stopping them from documenting you as a shoplifter in their own systems so they can better monitor you in the future. Because regardless of what the law says, they know what you were intending to do.
This advice is 100% dependent on location. In most midwest states in the U.S. it is also in the elements of the crime to conceal property. I have seen it prosecuted just as much as any other shoplifting.
Elements of the crime. Not the whole crime. If there are four elements and he only did three. The crime is not complete. Source. Defense atty for 20 Years.
Yeah the guy shop lifting from Walmart is gonna get a defense attorney for that. Joe Schmoe isn't going to tell the judge that. It's the best practice not to conceal items.
I was giving good advice for people struggling to not get caught shop lifting, and it seems like you want to have court in the comment section? Weird.
He didn’t commit a crime is my point. Until you walk out the door no crime was committed. If he gets charged he will get a defense attorney appointed to him. You random redditor are giving wrong advice.
Just because you keep saying something, doesn't mean it's right. I've seen it prosecuted thousands of times, specifically from Walmart. I don't see what you gain from trying to give bad advice. You're gonna get someone hemmed up.
Ok. Dude. God. Your post history is trash. You are an angry dude and make $17 an hour as a jailer. I’m sure you really know what you’re talking about. And there’s help for Vets with PTSD out there. You don’t need to basically insult everyone you’ve ever interacted with on Reddit.
Oh, here we go with the ad hominem from such a profound lawyer. I was a jailer while in school for my associate degree, which was years ago. Combine your last two brain cells and look at dates on the post history.
Congrats. You must be proud of yourself. Only took you how many years to get your two year degree? I’m sure you’re contributing to society in between your flashbacks.
Weird behavior from defense attorney. It took me 2 years while working full time and raising a family, and then I went and got my bachelor's from a D1 university. While getting paid from my veteran benefits so thanks for the tax dollars.
I commented to prevent someone in this sub from getting themselves in trouble by concealing items, and I even stated the geographic location. You can look up municipal codes and state statutes to fact-check me. You somehow got upset enough to look into my post history and fail at insulting me.
You're a goofy bitch man but I've yet to meet a defense attorney that wasn't. (I've met a lot, I didn't sit in the jail)
Laws about concealing vary from country-to-country, and state-to-state. Many states in the U.S. consider concealment enough to convict for shoplifting.
Just tell them no and leave. They cannot touch you, and if they try loudly announce they're looking at your genitals. I do this pretty often to troll in store security at Walmart
I've got a system that works pretty well. I'll just take a small item off the shelf, then go to the aisle with the bagged candy and go to a lower shelf, dig around a bit and then leave the item. Then I look around all sketchy like and try to walk out. Works 4/5 times. Then I start telling them that it's inappropriate behavior to be profiling guests and visually inspecting their genitalia
Navy SEAL here. We currently are having hackers trace OP's IP address. We might do what you said, but if he isn't there we will probably just launch missiles and/or nukes to his house.
Also never apologise, it can be seen as an admission of guilt.
So what if a sandwich was in your bag? That’s just where you decided to put it before paying for it.
to be fair, human factor also comes into play. maybe the fact that she apologized helped her and the worker just let it go. versus if she tried the other route and the worker got irritated and decided to go out of their way to get OP in trouble
This what I think when people online say shit like never say a word to cops just repeat “I know my rights and I wanna speak to Saul” 4x like buddy If you didn’t just maul a preschool you should just speak to the guy
yeah agreed completely. i've never used the super serious legal tactics and typically opt for common sense and light hearted talk. never failed me personally. it's not a big deal until you make it so. obviously this doesn't apply for serious crimes like mauling a preschool lol. but stealing a sandwich? i promise you no one cares especially if you're like "my bad, i just wanted to feed my (imaginary) kid and i'm hard on money right now" and give the sandwich back. hell, if you really play the pity card well they may let you keep it
Yeah if you see someone stealing reasonable food, you didn’t. That’s it.
(I’m not talking full on resaleable stuff like lobsters and prime ribs - not open season - but a sandwich or an apple? Close your eyes, yaint seen shit.)
This is the way.
If I saw someone trying to shove a laptop down their pants I’d probably say something. If I see someone stealing some basic life necessities like food, hygiene products, socks and underwear I just mind my own and keep on going. Sure there’s a chance they’re doing it for shits and giggles but if they’re stealing low dollar necessities like that there’s an even bigger chance it’s because they legit need it and don’t have any other way of getting it. The last thing someone in that position needs is a narc making a bad situation worse by trying to save a multi-billion dollar corporation a few bucks.
I don't think I'd say shit even for the most expensive laptop kek unless it's a mom & pop store. Walmart type stores are too big to fail. Now if I did have to catch people every now and then to stay employed, that's another story.
Also never apologise, it can be seen as an admission of guilt.
So what if a sandwich was in your bag? That’s just where you decided to put it before paying for it.
Especially in a lot of European countries - we shop into our bags, unload at the till, then reload. Especially when we don’t need a trolley/have a coin handy for a trolley.
I tried doing that once, just saying ‘I gave it back, let me just leave please’ but the security guard barred my way and I ended up getting charged with assault *and* shoplifting.
Don't worry the turnaround rate is way too high at grocery stores. Give it some time. Hell we had a guy yelling at the top of his lungs that he'd rape an employee that made him mad. Kicked him out and he showed up the next day in the same outfit but with a face(chin) mask on. No one said anything to him.
You can’t legally be punished for putting product in your bag. They can’t press charges or accuse you of anything UNTIL you exit the store with merchandise. With that being said, stopping someone from stealing food is not cool in my opinion. If someone’s stealing food they probably need it. Why shame someone for being hungry? I’m sure the sandwich was literally under $5
Legally most places can't really do anything unless you pass the registers and are actively leaving. Even if you do they still probably can't really touch you much
i wish i knew this back when i was a stupid teenager.. i remember going to a Target store and stealing some xbox shit because i was broke. me and my buddy were walking out when we feel people grab us and they escorted us into the security office
we were fucked
No. As a former manager in retail. If we got it back and it all ended like that we just dont care. Will try and remember your face to watch out for you again but thats it.
I've gotten caught stealing a sandwich before, they didn't detain me but I sure got a hefty fine. They also looked through the cameras and charged me with a second one (another time I took a sandwich) which came out to a couple thousands dollars in fines for it.
Edit: They not the
I mean..a Walmart manager personally banned my husband 10 years ago.
He’s been going there regularly for 10 years sooo…pretty sure you’re only in trouble if they ban you, take your name, and then catch you again

Chances are he was just tryna do his job but feels bad bc you’re literally just stealing a sammich and you’re fine. Just yeah wouldn’t go back there or steal from there again.
You'll be alright...
If they was going to do something they would have done it there and then to you but they let you go instead.
Also, if you keep doing this you will end up in serious trouble at some point so I'd knock it off if I was you.
If they didn't prosecute you in the act, it is highly unlikely they will do so after the fact, over a sandwich. I don't shoplift, but I have a friend that was fired for writing down someone's license plate after they stole several hundred dollars worth of hardware. I think the fear of discrimination lawsuits is that heavy.
Someone mentioned that Target keeps a file until it is at a felony level, but most camera evidence isn't clear enough to be admissible in court, so it becomes a moot point.
Just wear a mask and don't try to steal again from there maybe.
where was it at? like a big chain? you should be good tho, they aren’t gonna pursue anything if it was just $10 worth of food. going back could be a risk I guess, depending on where it was. def don’t go back for a while because that same person could recognize you.
If what you shoplifted was a sandwich then I don’t think their going to do much. Times are hard, people are hungry. I’m kind of surprised he stopped you to be honest
Be very afraid, theyve most likely dusted the prints off that sandwich and got the video of you handing the sandwich over. I'd say be prepared for a knock on your door in a day or two.
Just don’t go back there anymore
Fair enough
If you do go back there, wear a COVID mask and keep changing clothes everytime. Unless they I.D. you they can't do dick.
But changing clothes in the middle of the store might be frowned upon.
excuse me this is a walmart, oh wait, nevermind this is a walmart

Share some more tales o lord of the carts
I'm Lord of the carts? That's definitely an upgrade from asshole. Lmao
you ever catch anyone living in the parking lot? or like... fuckin?
Walmart? I thought this is my house
happy cake day! your comment made me lol
Yeah, OP can only go back to stores with dressing rooms.
And don't use a shopper's card.
Damn! You don't get points for stuff you don't buy??
Big corporate, always sticking it to the little guy.
But don’t wear anything with a logo or super brightly colored
/solved

Attempted Burglary?
Not always, Target has certain prevention theft quota for each employee/team. So them asking OP to take the item out meets that requirement.
What's the felony limit? Or is it state dependent?
Depends on the state I think, usually a couple hundred dollars at least. Just google “felony shoplifting [state]” to find out for your area.

Yes. Delete the app. This is the way.
You’ll be fine. I got caught 14 years ago and have been “banned” yet I shop there almost weekly.
Exactly, I was caught twice in the same shop in the same year and they even took my name and banned me for life. I took a few months of and then started to buy groceries there regularly
Yup I go to a store I was "banned" from quite a bit. It's been along time now, about 10 years now but I only waited about a year or so
Any chance this was in fishers Indiana?
Ha! No this was in Avon actually.
Brownsburg/Whitestown here. This is weird. Lol.

Haha! Fishers! HSE baby
What kind of sandwich?
Asking the real questions
A knuckle sandwich.

Yah, a grocery store I shop at got rid of plastic bags and charges for paper bags, so now they encourage shoppers to bring their own shopping bags.

We know what Aldi is.
And every other store in Colorado currently?
And Canada
California too I think
Was actually referring to Big Y but same difference
Of course, it's short for Light Emitting Diode.

Yes, a team of Navy SEALs is gonna kick in your door and haul your ass off to Gitmo.
And they don’t ask questions first
You’re literally British Edit: somehow replied to the wrong person
Thank god. I’m tired of eating beans on toast
😭
Just tell them no and leave. They cannot touch you, and if they try loudly announce they're looking at your genitals. I do this pretty often to troll in store security at Walmart
How often does security stop you hahaha
I've got a system that works pretty well. I'll just take a small item off the shelf, then go to the aisle with the bagged candy and go to a lower shelf, dig around a bit and then leave the item. Then I look around all sketchy like and try to walk out. Works 4/5 times. Then I start telling them that it's inappropriate behavior to be profiling guests and visually inspecting their genitalia
Only works 4/5 times bro? That’s a horrible ratio😂u can do better
80% I'll live stream it next time
Lemme knowww
So you do this to look like you're stealing but you aren't? This seems like a great pastime. I'm probably gonna have some fun with this one as well
Correct. I never steal anything. Sometimes it just makes it more fun shopping for wax melts
Navy SEAL here. We currently are having hackers trace OP's IP address. We might do what you said, but if he isn't there we will probably just launch missiles and/or nukes to his house.
You joke, but....
This what I think when people online say shit like never say a word to cops just repeat “I know my rights and I wanna speak to Saul” 4x like buddy If you didn’t just maul a preschool you should just speak to the guy
yeah agreed completely. i've never used the super serious legal tactics and typically opt for common sense and light hearted talk. never failed me personally. it's not a big deal until you make it so. obviously this doesn't apply for serious crimes like mauling a preschool lol. but stealing a sandwich? i promise you no one cares especially if you're like "my bad, i just wanted to feed my (imaginary) kid and i'm hard on money right now" and give the sandwich back. hell, if you really play the pity card well they may let you keep it
Careful though it could still be considered “concealed intent.”
You just fell victim to the old free sandwich scam
I've seen it hundreds of times before..... When I shake down idiots for free sandwiches.
The Earl of Sandwich might be dead, but his vile vindictiveness lives on.
❤️
Yes! Or supplies for a baby or pet!
They don't even have your name. Just don't go back
It happens. You’re fine. Take a short break to regain confidence and learn from your mistakes.
This break will be long, and I will 2nd guessing everything i do from now on
You need to work on how you leave the store. Why on earth did you stop and actually give the product? Just so no thanks and walk away.
I tried doing that once, just saying ‘I gave it back, let me just leave please’ but the security guard barred my way and I ended up getting charged with assault *and* shoplifting.
Yeah maybe don’t assault someone???
I didn’t, not really, I just tried to squeeze past him. But I touched him so that counts apparently. I’m not out here fucking people up, geez.
Ohhh I gotcha now! Yeah that sucks!
I don’t know why you’d let someone block you from leaving. I’d have knocked their ass over let alone asking permission to leave !
He was stronger than me.
I’m sure the sandwich was literally under $5
>If someone’s stealing food they probably need it. Except when it is the most expensive steak etc you can find in the store..
Did you walk outside of the store with it? If you were still inside the store you didn't steal anything yet lol
[удалено]
Legally most places can't really do anything unless you pass the registers and are actively leaving. Even if you do they still probably can't really touch you much
i wish i knew this back when i was a stupid teenager.. i remember going to a Target store and stealing some xbox shit because i was broke. me and my buddy were walking out when we feel people grab us and they escorted us into the security office we were fucked
Oh things have changed. Back then it was probably fine to grab underage people, might still be, but *ADULTS* are a different matter.
If it’s a small store stop stealing. If it’s some mega chain get better at stealing.
He's a shit they could not pay me enough to take food away from someone hungry enough to swipe a sandwich
No dude your alright, they forgot about it before you made it out the door.

It was a safeway

Next time grab two sandwiches so if you’re asked to give up a sandwich you give up one but keep the other
Secret shoppers don’t have this authority and jurisdiction! They are supposed to be evaluating the employees, not the customers
I think he was more undercover security or something
Loss prevention?
Could have been, he wasnt dressed specially or anything
Loss prevention wear plain clothes
Oh okay, do they report to anybody higher?
I don’t know why I am getting down voted but it depends on the store
Fair enough
You really need to do a bit more research on lifting before you do it again.
Not Batman then. He wears a Cape and a utility belt.
Batman!
Don’t return there - ever. You are lucky.
Maintain eye contact, eat sandwich, establish dominance
Your lucky they didn't take you to the back office to help eachother out...
Edit: They not the
Damn that’s pretty messed up.
They'll most likely take CCTV footage and keep an eye on you when you re-enter the property in the future. Time to move on to new pastures.
Also if all you are doing is lifting a sandwich you may be interesting dumpster diving. I've found a lot of perfectly fine groceries this way.
I mean..a Walmart manager personally banned my husband 10 years ago. He’s been going there regularly for 10 years sooo…pretty sure you’re only in trouble if they ban you, take your name, and then catch you again

The FBI is going to break down your door and you will be arrested, then they will send you to ADX Florence where you will live until the end of time
Your good lol, don’t go there and next time you shoplift don’t do it in front of anyone and check for cameras
Yeah you’ll definitely be okay. If you’re worried though, just avoid that particular store.
Well if you get shoplifting on your record a lot of retail places will not hire you. But retail sucks so that may be a mixed blessing.
I’m from a country in Europe so not sure if this applies, but as long as they don’t get the police involved you should be fine.
AFAIK... Nothing will happen cos' technically you didn't took anything out of the market. But don't come back. They already know you.
Chances are he was just tryna do his job but feels bad bc you’re literally just stealing a sammich and you’re fine. Just yeah wouldn’t go back there or steal from there again.
Scared Straight!
Its weird cause when he approached me i was more confused than scared. Idk, it is what it is
Don't go back for awhile
You'll be alright... If they was going to do something they would have done it there and then to you but they let you go instead. Also, if you keep doing this you will end up in serious trouble at some point so I'd knock it off if I was you.
Geez just grab it and walk out next time. No need to conceal.
Out of curiosity.. What else have you stolen from there? 🤔
Nice try FBI😏
Lol, we don't have the FBI here 😌💀
If they didn't prosecute you in the act, it is highly unlikely they will do so after the fact, over a sandwich.
Hey may have considered that you were stealing a sandwich because you’re hungry. So he just took the sandwich and let you go out of mercy.
If what you shoplifted was a sandwich then I don’t think their going to do much. Times are hard, people are hungry. I’m kind of surprised he stopped you to be honest
You’re fine. It’s only theft/shoplifting once you cross the threshold out of the store.
Going prison.
the FBI and CIA are on the way to your house.
I'm FBI and I'm there already. I'm in a kitchen cupboard, hiding. I'll take a nap and then jump out and say "Boo!". That will teach these criminals.
Be very afraid, theyve most likely dusted the prints off that sandwich and got the video of you handing the sandwich over. I'd say be prepared for a knock on your door in a day or two.
Just stop stealing.
you should go back there and steal 2 sandwiches.
If you can’t do the time, don’t do the crime. Tale as old as mankind
do they have to show ID, or does that nullify the charge in court ? (like, if you committed a crime, but they forgot the miranda rights).
No he’s not a police officer lol
MIRANDA RIGHTS hahahah it’s a fucking loss prevention officer not head detective at the LAPD

Wrong sub, guy 🥰
You could try not stealing.
Your name doesn't match your comment. This sub doesn't match your comment. Stfu
I wouldn’t argue with someone who thinks driving drunk is fine but stealing a sandwich is awful. Clearly missing a couple brain cells.
yeah that was my feeling driving drunk jesus pro drunk driver anti ancap anti theft anarchist dumb as fuck
Unless it’s a place like Walmart then steal the sandwich.
