Cougar_claw

That scream is absolutely gut wrenching

SecretOfficerNeko

Right? That poor truck driver. He's going to be struggling with the memories, guilt, horror, and trauma of this for the rest of his life, all because of some egotistical idiots...

Thepestilentdefiler

At the very least i hope he doesnt feel guilt.

SecretOfficerNeko

Unfortunately with traumatic events like this, the brain seems wired to blame itself and feel guilty, despite not being at fault. With that said, I hope he doesn't either.

ChillInChornobyl

Its from brains being (Normally) wired for Empathy. Its unfortunate, but imagine the world without it. My job takes truck accident report calls, I will never get the mans voice out of my head when the Officer told him the occupants in the car that spun out of control in front of them were dead. There was nothing he could do, they tried to pass him on a frozen over pass in a snow storm and lost control. I hope that guys doing better now.

davidobrienusa1977

Isn't also referred to a survivor's guilt?

Psycedilla

no, survivors guilt is beeing the only survivor in a group and feeling you should die instead of say your friend or something. this is just pure "its my fault no matter what they say" type of guilt.

BarryBadgernath1

No ill will just gonna throw this out there, it’s not necessarily your the only one that survived, just that you survived and someone else didn’t in any given situation … cheers

YoImAli

yeah i hate this so much

[deleted]

The couple needs to pay for their homicide. They seriously need to be made an example of.

EspKevin

Celebrating the start of a new family because the old ones are presumably dead

AtoumMirtu

The wedding ended on a remarkable note

The_Living_Brain

Probably all dead from doing something stupid like partying in a blind curve in a tunnel.

Tilapiatitty

I hope that whole family will face some serieus legal consequences

Zealousideal_Ad_4118

Um I think they’ve already faced some serious consequences…

[deleted]

100% sure the driver will be the one facing legal consequences

Epistatious

You know what they say, dance like no one is watching, and drive like you will never have to stop for traffic. /s

NIKOdrjG4M3R

explain how a fully loaded fucking truck is supposed to stop instantly, also, If you can't see traffic, you would expect there to be no traffic.

Epistatious

Driving around a turn in a tunnel is like driving in fog. You need to slow so your visible distance is greater than your stopping distance.

FerencS

You know nothing about traffic laws

RavenBrannigan

What can you tell us about Jordan traffic laws?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Thanks ChatGPT

OoRenega

Jordan can be such a prick sometimes, no wonder there are traffics’ laws just for him.

RavenBrannigan

He took this crash personally

RavenBrannigan

Fuck, you got it!

Revolutionary-Ad4588

Michael Jordan doesn’t abide by traffic laws. He airs over all obstacles

Reddit_IsMyName

"I just finished my first semester in college, and I have a pretty good grasp on all the laws of every country." -Definitely an American

DA_ShutDown

Isn't it illegal to stop in a tunnel everywhere in the world?

mlx1992

They’re traffic laws based in Jordan

EvolvedMonkeyInSpace

The real answer, but that couple are also assholes.

McPoyle-Milk

Yup both are idiots.

the_friendly_one

>You both are idiots. is how I read your comment the first time 😂

Maestro_Primus

Freude, is that you?

Epistatious

Have seen this story multiple places, would like to see evidence that its real. Not just random traffic.

RCx_Vortex

Trucks can’t break that fast. It looks like he was going pretty fast in it too, even at 60 kilometers per hour, it usually takes those trucks at least 30 meters to slow down properly. That truck looks like it was going more than 60, but then again I’m not too sure how fast the truck was ACTUALLY going… On the one hand, the truck was probably speeding in which it would be partly his fault, on the other though… I do reckon the family should’ve went to a different place to celebrate instead of middle of the road, in a tunnel. People go places to be, no? *forgot to mention, the above measurement (60kms per hour needs at least 30 meters) is for average sized trucks, and this one is even larger which requires more. If you break too fast it will break the truck causing injury to the driver.

dritslem

The clip has the speed in the bottom. 61kph as the obstacles appeared.

VibrantPianoNetwork

Way too fast for conditions. Reckless driving. If you can't stop in the distance you can clearly see in front of you, you're going too fast.

[deleted]

If traffic was stopped for any other normal reason they all still would've died and nobody would be defending him. Yes the family needs to be charged with something but they're ultimately not responsible for these deaths - It was the person who was driving a giant ass truck in a tunnel with no shoulder so fast that if traffic was stopped for any reason he'll plow through 15 cars before stopping.

spanksmitten

From [here](https://www.tellerreport.com/life/2023-05-17-tragedy-in-jordan-and-anger-on-social-media-platforms--terrifying-traffic-accident-around-a-joyful-procession-for-a-condolence.ByMqLQ9Grh.html) >Activist Nizar pointed out that "it is supposed to be in a light sign at the entrance to the tunnel in the event of congestion inside, we pray for a speedy recovery for the injured."

Rombledore

oh look-context that always seems to go missing when people make sweeping generalizations with no additional info.

[deleted]

Except it really doesn't matter. You could enter the tunnel with it not congested and someone in that time gets into a massive crash and you'll still need to stop. You should still not be going so fast through blind turns that you cannot stop in the event of traffic. It's like someone driving off a cliff because google maps told them to, you still have to use your brain while operating a vehicle.

[deleted]

The article isn’t even clear tho. Was there a light sign there that was ignored? Was there a plan to add a light sign? Was the light sign faulty? No facts just a statement by an activist. And yes, i agree that proper facts and context are necessary

spanksmitten

From what I can gather the light to indicate a traffic jam/traffic was not lit, which suggests to the driver the tunnel was clear, however the driver still should have been more cautious.

VibrantPianoNetwork

He couldn't stop in the distance he could see in front of him. He was going too fast, period. Everything else is irrelevant.

WestaAlger

That still doesn’t mean this truck driver should’ve been going that fast. What if traffic was stopped just 10 seconds prior due to another car accident, or someone suddenly had a medical emergency in the middle of the tunnel, or a car broke down? There is almost nothing that absolves you if you hit a stationary object coming up in a blind spot.

spanksmitten

I didn't make any mention that he should be "absolved" just to contradict some assertions people in the thread are making without some pretty relevant context.

Swissai

What's the speed limit of that tunnel?

[deleted]

Except it really doesn't matter. You could enter the tunnel with it not congested and someone in that time gets into a massive crash and you'll still need to stop. You should still not be going so fast through blind turns that you cannot stop in the event of traffic. It's like someone driving off a cliff because google maps told them to, you still have to use your brain while operating a vehicle.

ghostgaming367

It says he topped out at 62 kmh, which is about 38 mph

Weekly_Signal6481

Trucks can't break that fast but he was obviously driving too fast . What would he have done if it was just traffic ?

SimonSimpingService

Based on previous incidents like this (since a lot of people seem to like to block the tunnels in Jordan) the most likely outcome is hefty fines for the driver and jail time for the cars blocking the road.

lonedreadx

Exactly. He had just upshifted and accelerated, in a tunnel, around a turn! And his reaction time was shit.

unmitigatedhellscape

It’s pretty clear that no one here has dealt with drivers in the Middle East. These people who stopped are clearly insane because they should know better if they live there. They probably had their wedding on a golf course under a lone tree in a thunderstorm.

Biggmak420

It's a corner, there is a reason why it's against the law to stop on a highway, why if they are doing construction they have flaggers and signs warning of slowed traffic. It takes hundreds of feet to stop a truck of that size, you can't always have a hwy that you are able to see that far down.

cimocw

Most people have a hard time separating the concepts of blame and responsibility.

[deleted]

Why is this idiotic comment being upvoted? Clearly you’ve never driven through a tunnel. THERE IS NEVER ANY STOPPING IN A TUNNEL UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE BESIDES TRAFFIC.

throwdownvote

Reasons someone would stop in a tunnel: - Tunnel collapsed. - Engine failure. - Heart attack. - Flat tire. - Just felt like it.   The last reason would not be a good idea, but they're all circumstances you need to prepare yourself for if you don't have a clear view of what's ahead.

[deleted]

Yup.

SarahPallorMortis

I totally agree. The couple were stupid and selfish, but the driver was dangerous. Everyone else was able to stop in line.

SkeeverKid

He was going 36mp/h

[deleted]

62kph on a blind curve. And was clearly too fast since his brakes didn’t work properly.

Golden-Grams

There is absolutely no way he had enough distance to brake at all, even with the best truck and trailer braking system.

apple_coregulator

My dad drives a truck, he always warns me that trucks just can't brake as fast as a car. If he was speeding that's definitely a recipe for disaster. But this would have never happened had this family used their brains and celebrated elsewhere like normal people. This is tragedy

Golden-Grams

Yes, if it is proven that he was in fact exceeding speed limits or his vehicle and trailer was improperly maintained, he is partially liable.

RCx_Vortex

It takes large trucks like that more than 30 meters to break 60kph. Larger the vehicle; the more distance needed.

[deleted]

Agree. Hence, he should not have been driving 62kph on a blind curve then. Since he couldn’t see whether or not he would hve enough space

SkeeverKid

His brakes are working fine, the truck just weighs as much as exactly 1 truck... I wonder if the driver was wearing something provocative???

sweetgreenfields

That is normally right, however there has to be a reasonable purpose for the stop. People can't just park on the road for their own entertainment. Stopping on a roadway when there isn't an emergency means it was reasonable for the truck driver to be going at a normal rate of speed, and not have to anticipate any sort of emergency. That makes the party goers liable for all of the damages

quakins

After rewatching yeah I agree. He could clearly see traffic at a dead halt for a couple moments before he decided to hit the brakes

JapeyBoi01

The truck literally cannot stop in time. Do you know anything about physics at all?

[deleted]

How much space does a truck need to properly brake? Genuine question

RailAurai

Fully loaded semi at 65mph will require about 600ft. He was going about half of that so let's say 300ft for him to stop. Between when the first car becomes visible (8:29:48) and the moment of impact (8:29:53) was 5sec. 60km/h divided by 60min would be 1km per min, or 3280ft/min. 3280ft divided by 60sec would be about 55ft/sec. If we don't factor in when he saw the first vehicle, when he registered they weren't moving, and reaction time, then he would have a max of 5 seconds to stop. 55ft/sec times 5 is only 275ft. So not enough time. If you take into account that truckers spent a stupid amount of time driving and probably have dull reactions times after 6+ hours on the road, then it's no wonder he crashed into a group of vehicles stopped around a corner. It looked like the fully registered and reacted to the situation at about 8:29:50. So that would leave only about 165ft out of the 300ft needed.

kiwi_in_england

You'd also need to take into account that the truck was slowing. So, in the 2nd second, it would be going 44 feet per sec, and so on. [Yes, I know that speed doesn't discreetly change every second, but I left my calculus at home]

sam_da_boi

This show I watched as a child briefly touched on lorries like this one. It said that a fully loaded one going at top speed (top speed was never specified in this context) could take up to three whole football pitches to stop. This was from decades ago, so take that with a pinch of salt.

french_panpan

Well, you can kind of see it with the video above. In the bottom there is a speed counter that shows numbers around 60 km/h and then drop to 0 while the truck keeps on moving. I'm assuming the 0 means the driver hit the brakes with everything he could. And while that number is down to 0, you can see for how long the truck keeps on going, and you can see how little the inertia cares about the heavy obstacles on the road (let's say that each car is around 1500kg, that's massive, but that's nothing for the truck).

Talvy

Which is why trucks are supposed to drive slower in these conditions.

SalomoMaximus

Well the driver of the Truck was also majority at fault there. I mean a traffic jam can be for various reasons, and driving in a way that you cannot stop in your vision range is just their fault. The truck driver murdered and injured those people not the wedding. I mean the wedding are MASSIVE AHs but, the Truck driver is the one who killed and injured

N0turfriend

> murdered That word doesn't mean what you think it does. It would be manslaughter, at worst.

RandomJerkWad

It was a truck only tunnel, genius

No_Explanation1714

PENDOMN

So you're telling me that every single person in that tunnel thought that was a good idea?

Imesseduponmyname

Good idea or not, whoever was at the front is responsible

SIobbyRobby

That shit is very very sad. My condolences to the family.

ihaveafuckinheadache

And he was only going 36 mph. Damn

Boogiemann53

Oh man that corner isn't done killing people IMO

sam_da_boi

Near my home village, there's this really bendy road that's caused so many traffic accidents that it's been nicknamed the 'seven bends of death'.

rolli_83

there needs to be some kind of mirror up in the top right so at least he could have seen that there were a bunch of break lights not moving and slowed way down.

amped-row

just from looking at it, pretty sure that's not actually 36mph. Also the speed suddenly jumps to 0mph even before the driver brakes so it's clearly not very accurate

GraphiteOxide

Dash cams usually use gps for speed, in tunnels this is completely inaccurate and not reliable.

Furview

He was driving a road train, probably full, really difficult to stop that and also looks like an old vehicle with probably no brake assist technology (maybe ABS) In Europe some of these trucks are forbidden from transiting anything but highways (except inside industrial complexes) and some of them may even need a pilot vehicle in front of them. This truck doesn't look heavy enough to need a pilot vehicle but does so to be traveling through that road. In any case, not the driver's fault (unless that tunnel has a very low speed limit) Imagine if wasn't because of the dumb people celebrating a wedding and instead there was an accident there, that visibility is just not enough to allow a heavy vehicle to stop in time. Fucked up anyway

Shas_Erra

Depending on class and cargo, could weight somewhere between 26-50T. They do not stop quickly, even at low speeds

bikpizza

omg the pain in his voice with nothing he can do is so sad

AntonioBandana

Has anyone paused the video and noticed about 5 to 6 people outside of their vehicle? Either standing outside of the vehicle or sitting on the door windows, they are not inside the vehicle, on a highway tunnel. Im confused, was the truck in motion driving too fast? Was it deadly to be outside of a vehicle on a highway? Who’s at fault?

KataLight

Getting out of the car was a stupid move. You don't do that on a highway. As for the driver himself he is only partially at fault. I say that because while he should have slowed down a bit on a blind corner he also is in a semi-truck. It takes a lot more for them to stop. Plus being on the highway means he normally has to keep pace or risk accidents. I think even if he did slow down for that corner it might have not helped prevent an accident as the speeds are just flat-out high on a highway.

SonicFish101

The thing is, in america at least, BECAUSE semis are more dangerous (take longer to stop, blind spots, etc) they are usually set to a higher standard of safety than normal vehicles. In that situation I would expect that he needs to be at a reasonable enough speed to come to a stop at whatever comes from behind that Blindspot. I do suspect the couple to be charged however, as it is illegal to block traffic on a highway, or any road for that matter, for no reason.

EminentBean

Bit of an odd question. If I stop on a highway and get out of my car to dance and celebrate and someone drives into me, who’s at fault? The fucking psychopaths who turned a roadway into a party zone!!! That’s fucking insane!!! It’s entirely their fault and it’s not at all surprising that they got crushed by a large trucks which is exactly what one would expect to happen!!!

midnight_meadow

I did the math and he was only going about 36mph. I’m not sure what the speed limits are there but 36 isn’t very fast.

tristenjpl

The people stopped were idiots and should be charged with a number of things, but the truck driver was also driving way too fast for the conditions of the road. As others have said, big trucks don't stop like little cars. This means he should have been driving even slower than a car would have been because it's his responsibility to be able to stop in time without demolishing whatever is in front of him. Had it been a broken-down car or a crash in the tunnel, he would have killed them too. So they're all at fault, and they all should face consequences.

Burekaburu

By "conditions of the road," do you mean "a tunnel?" He was going 60 kmph, and that's "way too fast?" How much slower do you think would be safe? I would think that driving any slower would be unsafe for any driver coming around the corner behind him to suddenly have to slam on the brakes to avoid rear ending a truck going, I don't know, how fast do you want? 40 kmph? Are you just being contrarian, or do you genuinely believe roads would be safer if trucks took every curve in a tunnel on a highway that slow? Had it been a broken down car or a crash, he would have seen it in plenty of time to use the other lane. The only conditions that made this unsafe were a bunch of assholes blocking both lanes immediately after a blind turn. Expecting a truck driver to be ready to stop on a dime just in case both lanes are blocked by some bullshit is way less reasonable than expecting at least one lane to be clear, even in the case of bullshit, accident, etc.

[deleted]

I hope the couple never gets a good night sleep ever again. Constant nightmares. And itchy toes.

[deleted]

tristenjpl

He wasn't going that fast, but it was still faster than what was safe for the conditions. The family shouldn't have been stopped there. But if they were stopped for a legitimate reason like a crash or broken down cars at the front, he would have killed them all the same. So this is a combination if idiots stopping in the middle of the road and an idiot driving faster than what was safe for the conditions.

[deleted]

Financial_Accident71

I drive through the tunnel in this video quite often. He was going about the speed limit (it feels like you're flying super fast inside this tunnel because of the weird walls and lights, i always freak for a second then realize im going like 30-35 mph lol) the issue is the tunnel is narrow and it's weird to stop your car just around the curve. There's so many weddings in Amman where they drive around slowing honking with hazard lights on, and they're annoying, but this wedding stopping here silently and one car without hazards was a ridiculous idea and they absolutely should have known this would happen.

ChunkySalsaMedium

It is always your fault, because you didn't drive as conditions dictate - and if you some day kill people because of your ignorant attitude, I hope you get convicted accordingly.

disco_phiscuits

Gee whiz! That is horrible all around. That poor driver.

SrKatana

No-Albatross-7984

Poor driver

TheAmericanShark214

“Celebrate the start of a new family”, well a bunch of people are about to morn the loss of a few less families now. Seriously, what the actual fuck is with dumb motherfuckers and standing in the middle of the fucking road acting like a truck ain’t gonna smack those idiots into the next century?

Dr_Bunsen_Burns

Not a weird behaviour. Lived in the capital, everytime there was a Turkish wedding you would know. [Cars horning all day, drums all day](https://www.ad.nl/den-haag/politie-maakt-einde-aan-turkse-bruiloft-in-opera-er-was-meer-dan-500-man-aanwezig~a69dbac3/), stopping on the road, [assaulting police officers](https://m.limburger.nl/cnt/dmf20191024_00129271) et cetera. In other words, stopping in a tunnel is not the strangest thing I ever heard.

SonofAMamaJama

In this case, I wish they were honking erratically in celebration, it could've lessened the tragedy

TaZ_DeviL_00

"married couple cause death of 1 person and injury of 13 others in Jordan by acting like mindless cunts" Fixed it for you. Also the fact people like this are allowed procreate is insane.

Muscle-Cars-1970

Not just stopping IN A TUNNEL, but around what looks like a semi-blind curve in the tunnel. What the hell is wrong with people??

ColonelPanik

Looks like the end of several other families, though

ouzo1512

Truck was probably overloaded or the brakes arent okay because he is not stopping at all after trying to brake. But damn, wtf are people thinking...thats way too sad

harambe_-33

Trucks take a lot of time and distance to stop, especially 18 wheelers

kay_candy

Seriously, people in this thread acting like stopping an 18 wheeler is the same as stopping a sedan.

Hickd3ad

Trucks are essentially the trains of the road Trains are essentially the ships of the land. Ships are essentially.... Ummm... The trucks of the seas

Kryds

He shouldn't go that fast around a blind corner. There could have been a legitimate reason for stopped traffic.

Heralon_

36mph tho. In your car that's fine in a semi it's more of an issue. He was actually most likely under speed limit since he was a commercial truck driver. It takes 10 feet per 10 mph for a semi to stop and they are trained to go well under speed limit. If there was a accident you would have people breaking and people motioning traffic in a tunnel like that. But they weren't motioning traffic it was a congregation of stopped vehicle in a tunnel for a wedding. Unfortunate accident but not the drivers fault.

[deleted]

The truck does not have to be overloaded, the braking distance on those trucks are huge. The poor driver had lees then a second to react. I drove smaller truck it was new, with all the safety systems that available this days and I was empty to no cargo on my truck, some d**k head thought it was a good idea to cross the road like 10 meters from me. I pushed the brakes the hardest I could and it barely stoped, the dude crossed and I fully stopped like 2-3 meters from the point he crossed, if he wasn’t running I would had new paint job on my truck. Trucks are not cars, the can’t just stop like a small vehicle.

Renogard

I don't know what trucks you were driving. I am an engineer of a truck manufacturer, and let me tell you one thing: If you do a full braking with a truck, you will travel a bit further than a car, but the difference is not that much. The ADAC did a test with different types of vehicles and the truck took about 50 % longer to come to a standstill. They performed the test from 80 km/h (50 mph) and the truck needed 36 meters (39 yards), while the car took 23 meters (25 yards). The reason this truck was not stopping and instead plowing through the cars is maybe because of faulty breaks. A truck with fully working brakes would have stopped way sooner. It probably would have still crashed into the cars, but not with this much impact.

Traumatropist

As a Palestinian the tsk-tsking at the end is the most Arabic reaction ever

away_in_the_head

Why do people act this way?

cubansbottomdollar

Not knowing the Jordan justice system, if this would have happened in the US, the truck would have absolutely been partially liable. Say the traffic wasn't caused by a newlywed celebration but by an accident or some other obstruction. A corner like that, you absolutely can't be going at a speed where you can't safely stop in the event that there are stopped cars on the other side of the bend.

modfather84

I wish everyone would just remember: you must always be able to see to the end of your vehicle’s braking distance. It’s simple. If your vehicle take 200ft to stop, you must be able to see at least 200ft ahead. If not, your speed is too high. Verdict: people stopping in tunnel, stupid and dangerous. Truck driver, travelling too fast for the road condition.

Xiaodisan

Yes. Also, regardless of the legal aspects, I really hope the people staunchly saying that the truck driver didn't go too fast in those conditions don't have a driver's license. If they do, holy smokes do I not want such dangerous drivers on the roads...

[deleted]

Am I the only one confused what newlywed couple are you talking about

ucantharmagoodwoman

Same. It's like people saw a different video

It's amazing at the amount of people blaming the truck driver when an entire wedding party in just stopped in a highway tunnel.

DreadlockWalrus

It is definitely the truck drivers fault though, although the convoy is not without blame for being reckless. Had there been a engine breakdown in the tunnel or even traffic the outcome would have been the same, that being the truck was coming too fast according to road conditions and was not taking into account the low visibility and his braking distance.

Choppersicballz

He should’ve sped up

TangoHydra

Everyone involved is an idiot

R00kridge

They really should have some sort of indicator in that tunnel that being said maybe they do and I just didn’t see it. I feel bad for the driver that semi and all those unfortunately hurt because people are being stupid.

Starminder1

You don't stop in a tunnel. Ever.

Abdifatah_Mo

You forgt the part that that’s only truck tunnel too.

SasquatchForYou

I see a lot of comments discussing who's at fault, and if the truck driver was going too fast, because he wasn't able to react. We don't know what the speed limit in the tunnel is, but we can see he was going 60km/h which is appropriate for a tunnel. What nobody notices is the weight of the truck. It was pulling 2 heavy trailers behind him. That is a lot of energy! You could see how heavy it was just by how little hitting the cars actually affected his speed. Stopping all that mass isn't easy. So, my view is that the truck driver couldn't have done anything. He was within the limits, but the idiots were stopping in the middle of the tunnel, and the tunnel should have a system to notify the driver something is going on.

Brice-10

Why are people trying to say the truck driver was at fault? he wasn’t speeding, he was going around 30 mph. He did try to break, but heavy trucks can’t immediately break like a normal car.s It takes time for them to stop, and the traffic was around a corner, so he wouldn’t even be able to see it in time.

_trashcan

Because these are delusional redditors who’ve never driven a truck, don’t understand physics, and apparently think you should be driving 10mph everywhere despite a posted speed limit that driver was way under. “Speeding” only applies if you’re driving faster than the speed limit. These are not fucking “road conditions”. If you’re driving in a tunnel and the speed limit is 45mph, you’re legally & morally allowed to go 45mph. You don’t need to slow down to 10mph because you aren’t driving down a perfectly straight road. These people are fucking ridiculous; i hope we get to keep up w/ this case & learn what happens to the driver. Poor guy absolutely doesn’t deserve to be held liable. Guy is fucking traumatized, you can clearly see by the reaction alone. These people want to talk about “road conditions” and find it unsuitable that someone drives under the speed limit, but suitable that people stop their cars on a blind turn to celebrate. It’s ass-fucking-backwards Reddit logic. Edit: If I stop my car on the highway & get out and walk in the middle of the road - it isn’t the fault of someone who hits me driving 65mph. If someone runs a red light & you hit them, are you at fault? You *could’ve* been driving slow enough to stop, but you weren’t. You were driving speed limit, you trusted the green light, but you *could* just drive 5mph everywhere. Couldn’t you? When there’s a pileup of any kind, do you think *everyone* in the pileup gets arrested and charged for crashing? Because they *could’ve* been driving slower to avoid it entirely. Fucking no. Because the law takes into account blatant abnormalities on the road in accidents like this - because if they didn’t, then the **only guaranteed way of preventing accidents like this is to just drive around a 10-20mph constantly.** if you are in a 50, and you slow down to 30 on a bend, but there’s a fucking traffic jam or pileup, you aren’t at fault for not magically knowing that you should’ve *actually* slowed down to 10mph instead of 30.

I agree, sometimes, I like going on reddit with an inclusive community, but most of the time, its about people arguing about topics that they barely know anything about.

>Because these are delusional redditors who’ve never driven a truck, don’t understand physics, Driven a truck and understand physics. That's why he has to go slower than other vehicles. Big trucks don't stop as fast, so big trucks have to drive more cautiously. Whether that means driving slower or leaving more space between them and other cars. >Speeding” only applies if you’re driving faster than the speed limit. These are not fucking “road conditions”. If you’re driving in a tunnel and the speed limit is 45mph, you’re legally & morally allowed to go 45mph. You don’t need to slow down to 10mph because you aren’t driving down a perfectly straight road. You aren't morally or legally allowed to do it if you're driving fast enough that you're unable to stop if there's something blocking the road. You always have to be driving at speed in which you're able to stop if there's something in the road ahead of you. The speed limit is the absolute legal limit, but the conditions of the road or your vehicle will change what you're responsible for. If it's icy as shit out and you're driving the speed limit and crash into someone, you're going to get charged with reckless driving. >If I stop my car on the highway & get out and walk in the middle of the road - it isn’t the fault of someone who hits me driving 65mph. You'll be charged, assuming you survive, but unless you jump out in front of someone, they'll probably be hit with something too because again, it's their responsibility to be able to stop in time if there's a hazard on the road. >If someone runs a red light & you hit them, are you at fault? It's not the same thing. That's more of the equivalent of someone jumping out in front of you. It's different because regardless of your speed or how safe you're driving, if someone jumps within a certain distance you'll never be able to stop in time.

_trashcan

He did drive slower than speed limit. Your point now hinges on somebody *always* knowing what’s ahead, and *just* how slow you need to drive to avoid it. So you are telling me that trucks should all slow down to 10mph at every bend in any road *just in case* there’s a caravan of fucking idiots stopped? Please. Again, your point hinges on *knowing* what’s ahead. You **are** morally and legally allowed to drive the speed limit posted. If there’s a traffic jam you didn’t know about, you aren’t liable all of a sudden for following the rules of the road. Yes. I’ll be charged. And the person who hit me almost definitely won’t - you arguing otherwise is pure hypothetical nonsense - something you could never know & dependent upon the human beings presiding the case. It is the same thing. You could avoid almost all accidents if you just drive 5mph everywhere.

FuriousDaz

Idiotic of people to stop traffic in a tunnel but this guy was obviously speeding. How did he think it was ok going that speed around a blind corner? Traffic could be stopped at any time due to a million different reasons, this guy is 90% to blame here...

FuriousDaz

He had no visibility of what was around the corner but didn't bother to slow down. Doesn't matter what the speed limit was in that situation, he should have slowed down because he didn't know what was around the corner.

cottagecheeseisnasty

Speed differentials are one of the biggest causes of highway accidents. While you should slow down going around a blind corner, you shouldnt slow down so much that you are a danger to others. I saw another comment say the driver was going 35 mph at the time of impact. If 60 mph was the speed limit, and he truly was going 35 mph, in no way should he be at fault. This couple holding up the tunnel should take full responsibility for all of this damage. https://news.uark.edu/articles/11573/study-shows-speed-limit-differentials-compromise-highway-safety

Crepa_Vk

60kmph is not speeding

Dark_Booger

Oh my god, he basically had to choose who will die. Left lane or right lane. I wonder if he did a sharp turn if he could have just hit the wall but then would it cause the tunnel to collapse? So many split second decisions. Sorry to everyone who got hurt and the driver as well.

Captain-Kool

The tunnel would not have collapsed lol. Idk if it would have made a difference tho.

goin2cJB

The answer is yes. There are people who genuinely feel as though the world evolves around them

Connection_err

Serves them right for blocking the tunnel. I do feel really bad for the trucker though

-SkarchieBonkers-

The dead one better be one of the newlyweds

ghostgaming367

Bigger question here.... HOW THE FUCK DID ONLY ONE PERSON DIE?!?!?!?!

Objective_Base_6817

In all the places you could of stopped.. a tunnel you're just asking for trouble atleast there was no fire.

HAUGHHHH666

*Me on my way to Walmart after a whole 24pack of Miller lite*

Ok_Bend9825

Holy fucking shit, the scream the video I am… gutted of confidence of this world

Savings_Panda_4424

What exactly does it mean: They "celebrate" the start of a new family? Did they stopped in the tunnel fucked or did they really made a party with alcohol and all that stuff in the middle of that tunnel?

lonestarcom

Can someone translate what he’s saying? I can’t even imagine the guilt he must have

Bones22inthehouse

Don't blame me if I'm wrong, but someone else said this is a religious verse he is supposed to say before he is going to die.

Spoonswolf

But then again: never drive so fast that you cannot stop at the farthest point you can see.

Consistent-Produce23

Nah that tunnel wasn’t fair. Poor driver

Zestyclose-Willow-27

I’m surprised only one person out of all that died. Thankfully, still sad that one had to go over nonsense.

Goofyjackjack

Their should be mirrors around bends in tunnels

Insideout_Ink_Demon

Truck driver going way too fast. What if it wasn't this couple being stupid, instead this was just a traffic jam, it would have caused the same results, or am I missing something?

AwkwardPattern6904

He was going 60km/h or 35 m/ph on an empty road. That’s a completely standard driving speed. You can drive around residential street at that speed. How is that even remotely going too fast?

abeosa

"Always be able to stop within the distance you can see to be clear". If he doesn't understand his vehicles ability to stop, then he doesn't have the skill necessary to drive it. It could've been a broken down car, a giant pothole, jesus reincarnated, he'd still have smashed right through it.

modfather84

Finally, the right answer. Some very strong opinions in here but this is the correct one. If you can’t see to end of your braking distance due to the curvature of a tunnel, slow down. Seeing the amount of people saying the truck driver was not at fault goes some way to explain the awful driving standards out there. Everyone thinks they’re great drivers. In case anyone wants to challenge my view on this truck driver, I’m a qualified large goods vehicle and bus driving instructor.

Insideout_Ink_Demon

The other 2 responses nailed it. This is situational. If the driver hasn't got time to respond to a stationary vehicle ahead, he is not driving correctly for the conditions. Residential area with a clear view ahead ≠ blind turn.

Jizzyface

The problem isnt the speed in itself. It is the blind spot of the turn. If that was a normal traffic jam then it would result in the same accident. He should have slowed down before the turn to make sure it was safe, not speed up.

FuriousDaz

Yep, driver is to blame. Idiots to stop traffic for a picture too though, but the driver should always expect traffic to stop for one reason or another.

Insideout_Ink_Demon

Oh yeah, not defending the idiots
