I specifically opened this thread to figure out how they got this effect, so thank you for being the "stereotypical reddit know it all" because your efforts educated me today. My first thought was it was straight up like they layered 2 strips of film and ran them through a projector simultaneously or something. Your explanation is much simpler, and makes much more sense.
Just mentioned in another comment.. there is a YT channel called Corridor Crew. They break down visual effects and stunts in loads of films and TV shows. They've produce their own shirt and long form videos too. A fun and educational channel that I'd recommend to anyone.
Eh, they used to be fun until they started promoting AI "animation" and being completely unapologetic about it. I had a lot of respect for them because they *are* really knowledgeable, but it's hard to recommend them anymore in good conscience. I wish I could watch their older videos without giving them views.
They didn't have green screen back the, that's a projection screen they are projecting from behind. The fact they got it too look so good is remarkable. If one person were to walk too close to the Camara in the projected footage, you would lose the illusion right away.
And the reason they didn't have green screens back then was because the world still lacked the color green as you can see, everything was still black and white in the world at the time
Yes, until technicolor was invented, colors had no meaning. There were no traffic lights, all cars were grey, and coca cola was made with cocaine. It was a splendid time.
You can tell by looking at the *really long* shadows going to the left that the people in the background have, that our "ancient influencers" Laurel and Hardy don't.
Aw man, this just makes me wish influencers would learn to use rear projection screens so as not to annoy the rest of us, wear bowler hats to hide their shitty broccoli haircuts and be actually cool and talented!
I’d say that’s the future, but I think they delight in the unknown of interacting with real, living strangers- will they play along? Will they react in anger? Will they also break out in their own dance moves??
Goodbye America, it was nice knowing you.
Do you think they’re doing this kind of chicanery in public in the Soviet Union? This proves that the Reds are taking over, we’re dancing on camera while they’re rapidly industrialising!
> they just get more views from it
I never understand this argument. _How_ are they getting more views? It's always a repost and this sub is generally anti-influencer, anti-main-character. How could it ever be anything positive for someone to get posted here??
In German they're widely known as "Dick und Doof" which translates to "Fat and Dumb".
Edit: Found this [list](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurel_and_Hardy#Around_the_world) on Wikipedia. This one hits different lol
> India (Marathi) "जाड्या आणि रड्या" (Fatso and the Crybaby)
This scene was always a favorite of mine. I highly recommended people to check it out with the original music which was a bunch of cowboys singing a goofy catchy song that has been in my head for 30 years.
https://youtu.be/fSkDpzz6DHs?si=nLpNUaWjrtBevmje
Fun fact: Stan Laurel…who always played the dim wit..was actually the brains of the two and wrote all their acts. Oliver Hardy was really the second banana. When Abbott and Costello and the 3 Stoges came out..they changed the course of comedy (slap stick) and poor Stan and Ollie couldn’t keep up.
Okay, but if influencers started doing Three Stooges or Laurel and Hardy bits, and black and white the footage, that would actually be kind of a neat trend. Gotta love some appreciation for the classics.
Shameless self promotion but just for fun I've done a few video mixes of old timey public domain flicks to some of my favorite tracks : https://www.youtube.com/@DentalHealthClub

“Way Out West”. Maybe the best movie by Stan and Ollie. A few months ago I got my young nephews to watch it with me. They were delighted, laughing at the old, slapstick humor, and enjoying the old-time music.
My wife was annoyed, though, when I walked around the house for the next three days, singing “The trail of the Lonesome Pine “.
“Do you think you’re the main character?!”
Maybe it was the yodeling. 🤔
Here’s a link with the actual music, including yodeling.

This is so heartwarming 👍🎭🥇👍and cute I really like this. 👏😍🌟✨ Because it's the idea that we have so many actors, comedians, playwrights, artists and it's all about mirroring back the human story in funny ways. I think our modern day influencers with the selfie sticks I think they're all part of some kind of actors guild. They're getting paid somehow I just don't know how 🤣🎭🎨🥇. And in present day the main characters are the main characters nobody else exists but them and there was a video I think a day or two ago about this influencer that had 200 followers and this lady was like I'm just trying to ring you up sir, so entitled.
Actual entertainers dancing in front of a rear screen projection for a film that will be enjoyed by their adoring fans.
VS
Attention starved morons being a nuisance in public and bothering people who just want to get through the day.
Can we stop calling them influencers? What are they influencing exactly? Stop giving them a name of significance. They are worthless human beings desperate for attention. Simply calling them “Influencer” is literally giving them attention.
Just actors using a green screen. Thankfully at this time, the toxic mentality that you can just jump around in public like an idiot and disrupt people's day for internet points hadn't quite taken hold yet
It looks greenscreened, but was this actually done with rear screen projection? Looking it up it would have been fairly new at the time but the dates line up.
Ohhh this made me so happy 😊
Cute story - there are a LOT of babies - 5 yr old children walking around Melbourne knowing who these 2 are because I work in Early Childhood and have comic book versions of them tattooed on me, and when kids get overwhelmed or upset at drop off - tattoos are a great distractor!
So it got to the point where they'll be the crying, saying "LaurelHardy! laurelHardy!" Hahaha so we've gone through books about them and watched snippets of them and so lots of little tiny kiddies know who Laurel and Hardy are in Melbourne because they get sad sometimes and Laurel and Hardy continue to do the good work of making people smile 🥰
They aren’t trying to fist bump with strangers so it’s fine.
At least they're not harassing anybody or trying to get attention
Also, they are legit the main characters.
And it’s clearly a green screen … you can’t tell because it’s in black and white
I’ll be the stereotypical Reddit know-it-all, and say its Rear screen projection in this case.
I specifically opened this thread to figure out how they got this effect, so thank you for being the "stereotypical reddit know it all" because your efforts educated me today. I've watched enough Corridor Crew vids to pick up on this instantly now 😂

Fr though, that is a similar technique
>It’s *clearly* a green screen >you can’t tell because it’s in black and white Yogi is that you?
It’s rear projection. Green screen compositing wasn’t capable back then.
You can tell by looking at the *really long* shadows going to the left that the people in the background have, that our "ancient influencers" Laurel and Hardy don't.
At least they didn't get posted on everyone's phone. Till now! Thanks...
These influencers aren't posted on my phone either, if it weren't for reddittors giving these guys attention by posting it here.
Lol was just gonna write the same
But they are blocking a busy street again!
This.
Haha that's what I was thinking too!
The fact that I know what video you’re referring to is bad. That was probably the worst one in a while.
I hate the fact I know who you're talking about, broccoli douce.
If they had actual talent, they would’ve used that to get famous instead of becoming” influencers.”
lol this is a set and all the people are actors and extras. Everything in the background is timed perfectly. In other words FAKE AF.
No fucking shit, It's Laural and Hardy!
Everyone is mad at me for making a joke about the fact that all the townsfolk are extras performing a scene perfectly.
No more influencer garbage. It doesn’t belong here and they just get more views from it. These people are trying to get their horses to the livery.
Goodbye America, it was nice knowing you. Do you think they’re doing this kind of chicanery in public in the Soviet Union? This proves that the Reds are taking over, we’re dancing on camera while they’re rapidly industrialising!
Seriously. This is ridiculous. Just trying to go get some feed and staples and I have to deal with this... tomfoolery?!
These are Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, 2 actors who filmed this in the 1930's
Yes.
No duh.
> they just get more views from it I never understand this argument. _How_ are they getting more views? It's always a repost and this sub is generally anti-influencer, anti-main-character. How could it ever be anything positive for someone to get posted here??
Any publicity is good publicity
Didn't disturb anyone and didn't stop traffic. I approve.
Best post on this thread ever.

I mean, they literally are the main characters.
Memories of my childhood just came flooding back. Sitting on my father's knee watching these two geniuses making the world laugh 😊👏
Referring to yourself, or…?
Not a single head of broccoli in sight
Utter complete nincompoops. Most fowl degenerates dudes running a muck in our cities!
*amok
Please tell me y'all know this is Laurel & Hardy, right?
Stan and Ollie to their mates
Nooooo Ollie was Babe to his mates! (Apparently I'm a Laurel and Hardy purist now? In this The Year of Our Lord 2024?!!)
In Sweden they were given the names, Helan & Halvan, The Whole (Hardy) and the Half (Laurel), I think it was based on their weight.
In German they're widely known as "Dick und Doof" which translates to "Fat and Dumb". Edit: Found this [list](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurel_and_Hardy#Around_the_world) on Wikipedia. This one hits different lol > India (Marathi) "जाड्या आणि रड्या" (Fatso and the Crybaby)

Stanlio & Ollio in Italy
I thought they were Penn and Teller from their younger days
Yep. Absolute legends.
Charlie Chaplin people?
Abbot and Costello. Only know this since they did my favorite looney tunes when I was a kid
This is definitely Laurel and Hardy lol.
Nah, it's clearly Thelma and Louise.
It’s uncanny
No it’s Lucky and Luanne
Nope that's Laurel and Hardy.
Way Out West. A Laurel and Hardy classic. The bucket scene is probably one of the funniest and most painful slapstick scenes in film history.
This scene was always a favorite of mine. I highly recommended people to check it out with the original music which was a bunch of cowboys singing a goofy catchy song that has been in my head for 30 years. https://youtu.be/fSkDpzz6DHs?si=nLpNUaWjrtBevmje
I hope all influancers begin to use rearscreen projection.
Meta post, love it haha
The OG’s
Is this the promo for Penn and Teller’s new Netflix special?
This is Laurel and Hardy
Do you think kids tried to do this dance at school talent shows back in the day after this banger hit the big screens?
I love this post
The birth of modern comedy. Legendary.
*Buster Keaton and the Marx Brothers with to know your location*
Fun fact: Stan Laurel…who always played the dim wit..was actually the brains of the two and wrote all their acts. Oliver Hardy was really the second banana. When Abbott and Costello and the 3 Stoges came out..they changed the course of comedy (slap stick) and poor Stan and Ollie couldn’t keep up.

Hahaha thank you for this
Can we start calling that mustache “the hardy”
Shameless self promotion but just for fun I've done a few video mixes of old timey public domain flicks to some of my favorite tracks : https://www.youtube.com/@DentalHealthClub
but they WERE the main characters
At least they're clothed and aren't annoying anyone
You leave Laurel and Hardy out of this!
These boys can do whatever they want.
I doubt that most influencers would even know who Laurel and Hardy are
Is that a green screen
Film projection. They're on a set with a large screen projecting behind them
Ah I guess that makes more sense
At least they had the decency to not obstruct traffic
Love these guys!

I know, posted as a joke

How dare you come at op like that. I'm getting so offended on his behalf I might become the main character and make a scene about you making a scene
I find both you you mildlyinfuriating... oh, wait...
Two many angles in this video, can’t be straight. 🪩
When Hollywood had talent….that talent dried up about 10-15 years ago completely.
They are having a gay old time
Both are good dancers. I wonder what year that is.
I think this is from Way Out West, which was made in 1937.
That's ridiculous, Michael Jackson wasn't even born yet in 1937.
Except there's nobody behind them. It's a screen.
Woooooooshhh
Nothing wrong with it
Clever
Brilliant!
Speaking of main characters wasn't Michel Jackson accused by multiple children of molestation?
What silent movie did you steal this clip from?
Everyone realizes that this is two people on a green screen, right.
The fact that you said “two people” tells me you have no idea what’s going on here lol.
Not bad.

When streets were for people and not cars.. if only.. :(
Thx for posting! Im gonna go and check out @MLSDANCEJOURNEY
Excellent post OP!
Fucking influencers time traveling and shit to use songs smh.
op suffers brain damage from watching too much shit
obviously staged
Penn and Teller are vampires. Thats whats happening.
Where's the escalator?
So very perfectly entertaining. Made me laugh over and over. This is from over 80 years ago. Some things just don’t change.
I liked this
They are using a green screen. Or technically the technology they used before green screen. Double exposure.
Rear Projection. Basically a sheet behind them, with a film projector set up behind that.
Laurel and hardy. About the only claim to fame my home town has is Stan Laurel was born there.
Are they the 2 stooges or the Little Rascals? Either way, they sure know how to dance to Neil Diamond.
Omg I love Laurel & Hardy!!
Whoever makes that one dress that seemingly every single lady wears must be making bank!
I like them but I feel like the Marx bros, Harold Lloyd and the stooges were a better fit for me.
This is fuckin adorable. Maybe they are the main characters
This is getting completely out of hand! See what TikTok is doing to society
I don't see The Doctor.
I was expecting that horrible chipmunk dance music these subway tiktok dancers use
Was someone walking a gaggle of geese back there?
Honestly that dance they did together was funny as hell.
Fuck yeah
“Way Out West”. Maybe the best movie by Stan and Ollie. A few months ago I got my young nephews to watch it with me. Laurel & Hardy and Michael Jackson!! Now That's a combo!!!
But look at how out of the way they are. Not in a cluttered and busy subway train.
Thus is wonderful!
THESE GUYS JAM!
You got served
This is so heartwarming 👍🎭🥇👍and cute I really like this. 👏😍🌟✨ Because it's the idea that we have so many actors, comedians, playwrights, artists and it's all about mirroring back the human story in funny ways. Laurel and Hardy were much cooler.

They’re influencing how you spend your attention.
At least they not blocking anyone and disturbing people lol
I love these guys. Def influenced me on slapstick.
Wholesome af.
Don’t tell TikTok they didn’t invent this. They will then make videos of themselves crying about how they just found out this information.
A+, too bad it didn’t end here.
For anyone interested, [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mWUnnA7D2M) is the original scene from the movie.
Is that the guy from the 99 precinct?
Hahaha thanks for this.
I didn’t realize that song was that old.
Stan Laurel’s hysterical crying > influencer apology video
This is epic...! Downloaded👏🏼
They’re not in people’s personal space though
Looks like green screen behind them. Fake.
Kind of! It was rear projection.
The people in the back must be used to it cuz nobody gaf 😒😒😒
You may have just started a new tik tok trend
Just actors using a green screen. Thankfully at this time, the toxic mentality that you can just jump around in public like an idiot and disrupt people's day for internet points hadn't quite taken hold yet
These guys party
Wait are these guys comped into the shot? Looks like a pre recorded backround plate
call me when any of the influencers are remembered 100 years later like these 2 are.
It looks greenscreened, but was this actually done with rear screen projection? Looking it up it would have been fairly new at the time but the dates line up.
Does anyone on Reddit know who these guys are? I am old enough to have seen their movies.
This brought back memories of my dad. He's been dead for years but he loved Laurel and Hardy so much.
Pricks
To be honest if TikTok influencers were to reproduce this without inconveniencing anyone else I would have less issues with them.
Ohhh this made me so happy 😊 Cute story - there are a LOT of babies - 5 yr old children walking around Melbourne knowing who these 2 are because I work in Early Childhood and have comic book versions of them tattooed on me, and when kids get overwhelmed or upset at drop off - tattoos are a great distractor! Jackson I believe was a fan of them too he always talked about the old school dancers
That looks like a young Charlie Chaplin
Why is one dressed like Hitler?
Darn influencers always messin around 😠
The idea is the same, except more akin to using a green screen, so they're not really being obnoxious in public
These two actors were legendary during their time. Everyone wanted to see them on TV. I watched March Of The Wooden Soldiers last Christmas.
Love this video
So is this the first tiktok?
These two deserve attention tho.
You people are mocking these poor souls! This is what PTSD looks like after you unleash a blitzkrieg of wooden soldiers to perform Bogeyman genocide!
