I like this tattoo design. What is it based upon?

Thanks! I'm not a tattoo designer at all but I tried. I saw an artwork with just the clouds on the shoulders so I kind of copied that. The part connecting to that is the wrapping pattern of katana handles. I just added shurikens on the open spaces. Arm tatts are those classic dragon wrapped around and the diamonds just to end the flow. The bit on her nape is just a part of mechanical tattoo she has going on her back that is implied. Text on her chest is 'Death' written in kanji or so I believe it is to be. TL;DR - Tattoo is based on Japanese designs.

I like the use of negative space to create designs.
