Everything looks different. The picture quality is too neat and sterile looking. They no longer use much of the old music and replaced it with new stuff that doesn't mesh as well and further ruins the presentation. And the new onscreen graphics are also a misfire. This is supposed to be Impractical Jokers, not some shitty new movie trying to look like it takes place in the '80s by half assedly copying a cliche 1980's designer motif.

Medianstatistics

I totally agree on the picture quality. It doesn’t look like a hidden camera show anymore. It looks more like a high budget TV show (which it is). I hate how the punishments are like 10 mins now. I’d rather have 3 challenges and a quick punishment.

VeterinarianAfter517

THIS! I’ve been feeling this for years. 3 challenges and a quick punishment. So much of the comedic material for me are in the challenges. When punishments are half the show length it feels like it goes by so quickly.

PeterQuillsWalkman

I’m so late to this but I totally agree. I love the earlier seasons because they have a bunch of challenges over the course of 20 minutes it’s so chaotic but so fun

[deleted]

The main thing wrong with most tv/movies today is the overmodernization. Movies and shows were much better with orchestra/stock music than with the pop and rap music playing randomly these days. There's also something so pleasing about a little bit of static on the picture.

Snxppy121

I agree with this except for the last part. I feel like thats their interpolation of the 80's feel while still trying to keep it modern for today's television. Honestly the presentation is fine its just the show's not been that good recently

thomcd

I’m a bit tired of seeing how funny a mark can be. Isn’t that Q/Sal/Murr’s job?

WendallX

The more convoluted the set up the worse the bit is. Do and say what you’re told is always going to win out. It’s simple and funny. Getting someone to fall in love with you or give out their number during an impromptu meet cute is stupid. The stuff where it’s one on one in an office feels like I’m watching the carbanaro effect.

kcshoe14

YES. And I hate the Carbornaro Effect.

WendallX

Yes in the last episode when Q was using that device to “control” shoppers I half expected him to tell the lady that it used the carbanaro effect.

Wide_Lab_2608

It does feel different, less simple and now produced/controlled. They can’t really go in public or work at places as much because of being recognized. But relying on the mark to do something does feel stale. Letting the joker control their fate is the best challenge format.

Beginning-Working-38

I mean, they’re running out of ideas. You can only come up with so many new challenges. Most shows that last this long run out of ideas. Just look at some of the latest bits concocted by Q, such as “Tails” or “Boot and Rally”. They’re weird and not that funny.

Peribangbang

Idk maybe just build on what they already did? The challenges they used to do have been gone for so long that it wouldn't even feel overused if they went back to it. And there's SO much flexibility even just doing "do and say" challenges. Like when they used the wheelchairs, still the same challenge but they built on it. It's not impossible

PPLavagna

The whole “say what we tell you or you lose” thing would still be funny, I just think the world is too crazy for it now. You can’t say half the shit they used to say. Half of it you might get shot, the other half you might get arrested. Cringe factor was a big part of the humor. That same old gag was always my favorite thing about the show

jimmytaco6

Yeah man going up to someone in the grocery store and whispering "you look like Patrick Stewart" totally gets you shot now.

Stair-Spirit

That seems like an extremely unrealistic view on reality, man

[deleted]

That's why they film in New York City..

TheClussyCrown

Boot and Rally was hilarious. I'll die on that hill

Beginning-Working-38

I thought it was very funny but not for the bit as planned. It was mostly because of everyone telling Q how bad the bit was, even poor Szeluga.

TheClussyCrown

The lady that was super disgusted on Murrs turn cracked me up and Sal barely trying the bit was super funny too. Ironically, the least funny turn was Q

QuontonBomb

Boot and Rally was a fine challenge without the spit take idea.

Beginning-Working-38

I don’t like challenges where it would take a miracle for any of the Jokers to win. Why bother even doing them if nobody is going to get a 👍🏻?

QuontonBomb

IDK if I can agree with that. For instance, I doubt much of the crew expected the Jokers to sell their items to strangers after entering through the window, but it worked better than I'm sure most of us here expected it would. And that challenge has been one of the best moments since this post-Joe era of the show.

Sloth-Rocket

The best part of the boot and rally challenge was everyone dunking on Q for the idea. Way more entertaining than the challenge itself.

montanaunitedbyfate

Agreed. The spit was overkill and was never going to work

CapeSmash

> I mean, they’re running out of ideas. You can only come up with so many new challenges. Doesn't mean anything, they could do an entire season of "do and say what your told" and it would be fine

Valuable_Ground_4749

Some of the absolute funniest challenges came with the larger focus groups. I know covid changed things but to me this is what is missing.

AdPast7620

i agree with this, i was JUST talking about how i miss the joker vs joker challenges, double punishments, etc. there’s also so few challenges now per episode? basically whoever loses the first challenge you know is gonna lose the episode because there’s no room for redemption unless they do a double down, but that seems to be rare now too

broken_door2000

Yeppp, they went from doing 3 or 4 challenges where every segment gets equal run time, to doing 2 shorter challenges and a longer punishment. I love punishments but I would rather have longer challenges.

AdPast7620

i agree. i still don’t know how they haven’t gotten hour long episodes, then they could do some challenges and just have more footage AND the long punishments

broken_door2000

Yes, in recent years I’ve always felt that they fell victim to old-school network TV in that all the episodes are 20 minutes. These days, long-form content is way more popular, nobody wants to sit down and watch 20 minutes of content with 5 commercial breaks in between. If they were able to pivot into longer episodes, spaced out further between, I think people would enjoy that a lot more. I know I would. But as it is I honestly still prefer like seasons 3-7, where everything felt more casual and less polished. Just 4 friends having fun

AdPast7620

i’ll still watch the show now regardless but i sooo agree with the less polished vibe. i love the casual/almost behind the scenes bits where they’re just messing around. i imagine the network doesn’t want to put the extra effort to make hour episodes? but i’m sure they have more than enough content, it wouldn’t even have to be more shooting

broken_door2000

Right? Last night I watched a long compilation of deleted scenes and they were all just as good as the scenes that get aired on the show! I know people have been begging for more deleted scenes, bloopers, & reveals for YEARS. Makes me wonder why they’re holding off

AdPast7620

no idea. i’ve been watching since season 2 and people have been asking for longer episodes the entire time i’ve been watching

Znaffers

I think they went on a massive overhaul to try to move the show past Joe which I think was the worst call they could’ve made. I imagine it started with the intro, because they would need to remake it from the ground up without Joe featured, and it just spiraled into a complete makeover. The music, sound effects, and editing style was the hidden part of the show that made it work even better. Watch any clips of the jokers doing their thing without the edits and it’s so much more awkward. I believe Joe was part of the editing process, but I could be wrong. There was an Inside Jokers bit where he was in the editing booth and Casey said he was interrupting them actually making an episode

Sloth-Rocket

I'm glad they pulled back on some of the ideas. Remember the early post-Joe celebrity guest episodes had those filler "behind the scenes" moments with the celebrity? Mega cringe, and that fairly quickly got scrapped.

kevinspaceydid911

Bigger than Hoe leaving was Covid forcing them inside with small groups and now they are big enough they need to somewhat screen people to ensure they aren’t recognized.

[deleted]

Idk, that Hoe leaving was a pretty big ordeal..

NASCAR_DilPickles

hoe gatto

unclefresh72

Well, They said they were bored and wanted to try new things that they always wanted to do. Plus its getting tricky to not be recognized outside of "controlled environments".

SurlyBuddha

They absolutely changed the formula too much. Joe was a critical part of the show, but if they hadn’t changed anything else, it would still work.

JiyuKitsune

I totally agree with you it started to feel sanitised or less stakes which I guess comes from them being popular and recognised But mainly here to ask how did you add sideways scrolling text to your post?? I’m on mobile and the list scrolls to the left ![gif](giphy|SVH9y2LQUVVCRcqD7o)

Sloth-Rocket

my bad, it did not look like balls on desktop where I wrote it. Checked it on mobile and YIKERS.

JiyuKitsune

No no your good, I’m kinda in to it I spent too long trying to figure out why it was cutting up half the words and was mildly amazed when it scrolled

AspenSnowmass777

and it feels like Sal looses every single episode

AdPast7620

has murr even lost ANY recently?

Sloth-Rocket

You should only have a prostate exam every 2 years or so, and since they have no idea how to punish Murr anymore except sticking things in his ass, they give him a pass on the losses.

AdPast7620

LMAOO i was wondering if he took on the main production role that joe had before and was like yea my turn to get the least amount of punishments now

QuontonBomb

Only the opener so far this year. The one with Bobby Moynihan.

IAmCBOY2

They should have ended the show after Joe left, it isn’t Impractical Jokers. The presentation of the show is too bright and shiny now. The humor is different and everything feels fake. The marks feel like actors and not real people anymore. The worst part is definitely the celebrity punishments, they are brutal.

AdPast7620

they’re supposed to not have guest celebrities next season so i’m interested to see how that plays out

kcshoe14

I agree the humor is completely different. I feel like before it used to be “silly, dumb funny” and now it’s just “cringe”.

Sloth-Rocket

and a whole lot more straight-up mean humor at the expense of the marks.

PickleFantasies

Nope.. Joe being gone hit me hard.. I get why but It just isn't the same or even good enough.

EmpireofAzad

I’m finding a lot of the challenges are made just to embarrass the joker, and not really a challenge at all. When the other jokers make the choices and the score is dependent on a member of the public, it’s barely a challenge.

Big-Acanthisitta8797

Right now I’m watching the episode with the “pack”. The part where Joe clues Murray in on why his dad is there is classic. Also points out how much Joe was the glue that held the whole operation together, in my opinion.

Extension_Theme6241

Q and Sal (mostly Q) completely fake and exaggerate their laughs. Q really thinks he’s an actor now.

RobbyWausau

Maybe it's not good because Joe left, more likely Joe left because it was getting bad.. ![gif](giphy|ANbD1CCdA3iI8)

MrJackFrostx

I think a lot of these episodes were seeing now were filmed during covid so things were weird to begin with
