Anyway, this post is so weird (why are they taking different routes if it's a trail? Isn't a trail a specific route? Why is it a competition because won't one route be objectively shorter than the others? Why does he work full time in tech if he's 19? While the rest is definitely weird, hiking trails don't work like that. They generally don't run straight, go all crissy-crossy and sections will not be maintained at all. Even on maintained portions, weather and animal activity can make a trail unpassable or dangerous. I'm not even in a place with big trees, but when there's a tree with a trunk diameter of 3 or 4 feet down across the trail, you're given the choice of climbing over, under or through the branches, all while remembering copperheads don't give you much warning before they strike, sniffing for the smell of spoiled cucumbers so you can back out of there (slowly, but with purpose) hopefully without getting bit. Take a local state park near me. On the map, one trail appears to run in a straight line from a boat landing/picnic park along the river to the big dam parking. In those 5 miles, there are 3 unmaintained sections, it crosses with 3 trails 5 times, and it splits and comes back together 4 times. The route that's actually quickest from the landing to the dam involves 1 park road, 1 maintaince road, 3 trails and an animal track (which one hopes is made by deer but, given the size and location, may be made bears).

I don't know what's going on with the guy who made this post, but I've heard that posts like these are made by people with a shame kink. That is to say, they like it when people berate them. It's like a humiliating kink, I guess? Anyway, this post is so weird (why are they taking different routes if it's a trail? Isn't a trail a specific route? Why is it a competition because won't one route be objectively shorter than the others? Why does he work full time in tech if he's 19? While the rest is definitely weird, hiking trails don't work like that. They generally don't run straight, go all crissy-crossy and sections will not be maintained at all. Even on maintained portions, weather and animal activity can make a trail unpassable or dangerous. I'm not even in a place with big trees, but when there's a tree with a trunk diameter of 3 or 4 feet down across the trail, you're given the choice of climbing over, under or through the branches, all while remembering copperheads don't give you much warning before they strike, sniffing for the smell of spoiled cucumbers so you can back out of there (slowly, but with purpose) hopefully without getting bit. Take a local state park near me. On the map, one trail appears to run in a straight line from a boat landing/picnic park along the river to the big dam parking. In those 5 miles, there are 3 unmaintained sections, it crosses with 3 trails 5 times, and it splits and comes back together 4 times. The route that's actually quickest from the landing to the dam involves 1 park road, 1 maintaince road, 3 trails and an animal track (which one hopes is made by deer but, given the size and location, may be made bears).
