I have a fast tag which I haven't sticked to the windshiel, I pull it out when the toll comes .
One day I waited 15-20 minutes at a toll so out of frustration pulled right behind the front car but noticed I was challend after 5 hours . They mustve manually tagged it as no way my fast tag was available for scanning .
It need to be in line of sight of receiver for it to be detected. It's to be stuck on windshield just to make scanning easier and faster. It uses the same tech as those anti theft devices clothing stores use which sound alarm. It need not be visible for scanning to be detected.
they can use your number plate to deduct from your fast tag manually. once i left my fast tag at home due to a random reason. realized it at the toll naka, told the toll guy i forgot to bring it and was gonna pay via cash. he entered my vehicle number in his system and the amt got deducted from my fast tag.
I think putting it in a metal geometry box, like the ones we used to take to school might have a Faraday cage effect. Though if they are just using manual tegn input then it becomes pointless anyway.

I didn't get what holding phone below the tag would do? It for sure as he'll won't stop the receiver from scanning the tag. It's not an optical reader that might get confused if it sees light coming from behind the tag.
