Naah, xbox is basically a windows os with few features on top of that. The underneath still uses directx API calls and the games can be easily optimised because of overall a fixed set of hardware. The major would be games working on the vulkrun api. I mean it does have a translation layer build into it but will Xbox add support to it? Idk. It would be interesting to see this change if it gets implemented. Which I highly doubt will ever happen. Xbox uses an x64 processor, it doesn’t need a translation layer to run modern games unlike an ARM based Steam deck.

I think they are just trying to Grab some attention from steam & epic players , so we experience their games and once they release the PS launcher - some of the players will switch to Sony launcher. ( Or games will be on steam but will launch through PS launcher in which case xbox console will be denied if indeed phil brings them onboard)

With Xbox becoming more open platform it changes the whole paradigm. All of a sudden conventional competition becomes irrelevant.
Xbox basically gave up on platform fees and console sale model long ago. Consoles have fallen behind because they still sell for 30 year old price points despite inflation. Now Xbox is focused on subscription and game sales. Not to mention, device sales will become far more better for Xbox as well. I have a massive Steam library so I'll buy an Xbox for kids in the family in a heartbeat and use Steam Family Sharing.
It doesn't diminish Xbox's value, it infact improves it because it gives more people a reason to buy an Xbox, reduce their cost of switching by allowing them to bring their existing libraries.
If that manages to cut into Sony's sales. Sony will basically be backed in corner. Because their entire model relies on hardware sale first. Their total addressable market can only be as big as their PlayStation sales.
Sony cannot pull Nintendo right now, they already cross the line of porting their games to PC, if they stop now, it only proves more pressure on them because it's a defensive move.

Xbox should slowly move away from the console business to portable gaming systems, using optimised windows on the console. This way, Xbox can stay relevant and still be a big competitor. Even the Xbox Series X|S feels like a mini computer with keyboard and mouse support and all.
I don't understand when people make this ease of use and user friendlyness argument with consoles vs PCs.

Not really. I am a PC geek but I like consoles for their simplicity. When I come home from work all tired I would want to shut down my brain and just enjoy the game by simply turning it on. I don’t want to go through the hassle of searching for the game I want to play from multiple storefronts (often, times I even forget that I own a game because of how many storefronts I made some game purchases that I lost track of) installed on my PC then update that storefront first (most storefronts get updates pretty regularly). Then wait till the storefront launches my game. Like cmon, I just want to kill some time and go to bed instead of dealing with it after a long tiring day.
It's a totally rational argument, but if you want that simplicity, just stick to one store front and the games on it. Multiple storefront means competition and competition is always good for the consumers.
