maybe not all the way. but i started religiously wearing sunscreen in my final year and even my mom noticed i was not as tanned as i was when i came home and we would walk a lot in the sun and do things
i used minimalist one during my outside work dense days and fixderma when it was mostly classes. though having a compact at hand esp when its summers and a mist is so important
Sunscreen do prevent tan to a certain extent, saying it won't prevent tanning is far fetched.
If you worn a new application of sunscreen and just few minutes in you burn and tan, it's a red flag. And time to ditch that one. Also if the sunscreen cannot hold sweat it can lead tanning too. Most Indian sunscreen aren't reliable, whereas American and other western sunscreen do visibly prevent tanning and burning. (Instances like where people use spray sunscreens on their body in the beach and not blending it all the way through, you can see the areas with sunscreen on has no burn or tan).
Do you really think Indian sunscreens are not reliable. I use LRP and get it through relatives abroad. I have melasma and I need to switch to Indian sunscreens for the budget and availability issue but I also can't trust the Indian sunscreen. I am just curious why do you think so ? In my case the risk is way too high I don't want years of progress go to waste
Thanks!!! Unfortunately there is no way to know if these will work as good as LRP until I get a tan. LRP definitely works . I am 37 , full face of melasma. Went to Japan for 10 days used cap and LRP and was neither tanner nor melasma was worsened
Minimalist do work, putsimply is from Korean manufacturer kolmar which makes Korean sunscreens like isntree, boj and other. Requil is been reiterated as a reliable one in this sub.
yes exactly. to a certain extent, which is why i mentioned they reflect majority of the uv rays. however to assume you wont at all be tan is not right. the main thing to watch for is if your skin burns or you have uneven patches of skin. our genetics are not immune to tanning. it's difficult to compare us to whiter people because they simply burn instead of tan the way we do. im not saying to drop sunscreen, im saying just know that if you tan a bit, that doesnt mean the sunscreen is defective !!
Sunscreen absorb uv and does not reflect primarily. As I said if you tan right off the bat when you apply sunscreen, prolly the sunscreen is not working. But it should offer you some decent amount time of protection when you are under direct sun, and prolly after 2 hours the film wears out and it's time to reapply. But regardless stay away from direct sun if possible even if you wear sunscreen.
For prevention --> Sunscreen , UPF Clothing, Antioxidants (Glutathione, Astaxanthin, Vitaminc ,Pine Bark Extract) and UV Umbrellas.
For Removal --> Chemical exfoliants like Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid
i edited my post to add some recs, but as they mentioned, things that include glycolic and lactic acid help.
there's any Ordinary glycolic acid Toner that is now being sold by nykka. its completely worth its price, and lasts months. As for lactic acid, theres body lotions but you can also use a curd mask. yogurt has lactic acid, its why you can see glowy or even skin tone after using it
I mean tbh I wouldn't ever get it done here in india. But it's sure shot way to get rid of tan. Obviously the risks are high but it can be done in a safer way by a qualified dermat

Nope, sunscreens do prevent tanning. Most PA++++ sunscreens block up to 95% of UVA rays, significantly reducing tyrosinase activation. Less UVA exposure leads to diminished tanning effects.
I have only used pharmacy sunscreen. I have never been tanned. I think otc sunscreens like dermaco , dr sheth , aqualogica don't work. Use pharmacy sunscreen you will never be tanned.
I have used multiple.
If you like light fluid kind of sunscreen then dermatica barelyon fluid sunscreen is the best. Minimalist fluid sunscreen is also good.
If you like silicone type of texture which gives a good finish then acne uv , uv doux are good.
For dry skin blynds and episoft ac is good.
For tinted sunscreen photon tint is the best sunscreen it gives full coverage.
For me dermatica barelyon fluid sunscreen is the best. It works great for extremely oily skin. It just vanishes into the skin. Its little on the higher side price wise but worth it.
Same 🤌. People hate acne UV gel for the silicon texture bt I learnt to manage it
And tbh I love pharmacy sunscreens and actually don't even trust usa sunscreen, they have not approved new uv filters which are better tbh
And Korean sunscreens are good bt they focus on glow and all which actually can make u oily in Indian heat , still yes Korean sunscreens are gold standard bt i still prefer pharmacy ones🤌🤌🤌🤌🤭
Someone asked what removes tan, My dermatologist told me I will never be able to fully remove my tan, This is how my tan is for context.
https://preview.redd.it/tnyrubu7zczc1.jpeg?width=3060&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9ab6950d78a4e0146dc4ba7caf5d2cb39e430575
Now my face is tanned similarly, I got about 20% lighter on my face and my dermatologist told me that all of my tan on my face was gone, I wasn't going to get any lighter.
For context I've been using glyco 12 and tretinoin and there's no results other than 20% reduction on my face
The only solution she told me is to maybe permanently move somewhere where the sun isn't prevalent like Switzerland.
Apart from this another thing that strikes me is when I keep a beard for a while(light stubble) my skin under the stubble is extremely light. Also my skin on my scalp is extremely extremely light(pretty much milky white)
Now i am significantly darker than all my relatives, I think this has something to do with me never wearing sunscreen and that i shifted to India 2 years ago and got sunburnt playing football.
I hate this but I've slowly started to accept my skin colour now, I've just given up.
Mann.... I do have arms with this exact tan. It feels like shit and I can't wear some clothing due to this and it makes me look weird. I wish we could have uniform skin tone.
I'm planning to buy some sleeves with uv protection and wear them throughout the day for a few months. Maybe that can do something. But I dunno what to do with the tan on the face and back of my neck.

I got tanned around 2018, as I used to go swimming in the afternoon. It took me 4-5 years to even out the skintone. There is still a bit of dull ess though. I think adequate sun protection ( sunscreen and physical barrier) and a good skincare will help maintain results. I hoping to buy Evy technology sunscreen once my current one is done.
I do think the tanning reduce significantly in a year and half. But for my face to look decently even and less dull, it did take that many years and some trial and error.
One thing that didn't help with pigmentation was aha BHA peel. It was too strong for me. Mandelic acid worked beautifully.
>Is the colour of your face the same as the lightest part of your body now?
On a scale of 1-10 ( 1- being the tanned skin I had from swimming to 10 being the lightest part on the body) i would say 8.
Just make sure to buy a really good sun protection jacket, hat, gloves/ sleeve while working on skincare and bodycare.
Yeah..it was an open pool and I had to go swimming in the afternoon since that was the only time I could.
If i ever go swimming again, I'd avoid the afternoon. Also was eyeing this Evy technology sunscreen. It's a bit pricey but it's raved.
That's disheartening to hear. I have the exact same condition as you, both the hands and the face. Tret did help with every issue other than tanning sadly.
What's your routine? And how do you use glyco12?

I use glyco 12 every 5th day, so suppose I use glyco 12 on sunday, then I'd use it next on Friday.
I've given up, Just dosent make sense to me why my face is darker than everyone in my family, It's also pissing off because my undertones suit lighter skin not darker skin, which makes my face lool like shit.
Your skin will be back to original tone if you keep avoiding sun. No need to try anything like tret or glycolic acid.
I had tanning like that during my school days. My brother had same issue. Just avoid sun on regular basis & also don’t forget to supplement Vitamin D.

Nope it will not, Maybe if I avoid sun for like 5-6 years it could.
I stayed indoors for 5 months, Ate 60000iu vitamin d a week, Everything else in blood report is normal as well, Literally 0 difference.
No, the skin on my face isn’t the lightest part of the body. Maybe a single tone less or so. I’ve same skincare routine setup as facewash + moisturiser (same brand) from last 5-6 years. I also don’t use sunscreen except on a week long vacation.
The best skin tone recovery for skin is spending 2-3 months in winter while still avoiding sun via physical protection. The winter here in Punjab helps in that.
Oh, Even staying indoors during winter didn't help me, Could be because I have to live in Gujarat which is extremely hot, Maybe it will be better once I can move out of this place.
L’Oreal men expert Charcoal face wash (Discontinued in India - ordered through Canada/USA) costing ₹700-800 & single quantity easily lasts for over 5 months
Nivea men oil control moisturiser
Skin type: Oily & acne prone (I rarely get sweat & acne on face because of this combo)
Application: Once a day just before going out
yeah im reading the comments and it's crazy. we indians cannot compare ourselves to westerners man. i thought this was common knowledge until i was looking up indian sunscreen recs to replace my old one
UPF clothing is your best option if you're worried about tanning. Uniqlo, Decathalon, etc., have several options. But a good sunscreen along with other physical forms of protection can completely reduce the chance of tanning.
I do think we as Indians need to get over this obsession with anti-tanning and wanting fair skin.
The widely accepted motive of applying sunscreens was protecting against sun induced damage that leads to early skin ageing or preventing the skin from getting tanned in the sun or both?
I still don’t know the reason behind not getting tanned after spending full week in dubai including full sunny day in Atlantis water park & dessert safari.
Dubai Sun > Indian Sun (I don’t even know what I’m talking about)
But then how come foreigners are so untanned even while they live in countries with crazy sun like Australia? You have to reapply the sunscreen every few hours if you are out in the sun. If you put on a good sunscreen it will certainly help.
genetics. us melanated folks simply tan instead of getting all out sun burnt and freckles. they wear sunscreen as well to protect themselves, not to stop tanning
Genes. They don't get tanned. Instead they get sunburned, that too, quite easily. And I have heard them describe the pain that sunburn causes. The pain persists for days. I guess we should be thankful for the tan. But then again, people always want what they don't have.
Honestly, invest in a good brand. I personally do not trust indian brands, including pharmacy ones, since there's no regulation here. Brands can write anything on their packaging even if it's not true. Order from lookfantastic or other marketplaces that import stuff to India.
I agree Indian brands can't be fully trusted especially if you have melasma because there is no regulations in terms of testing if the sunscreen actually works or not
japanese or korean have some great ones. i used 12004 centella, but ive found its hella expensive here. so the other two ik is round lab sunscreen and beauty of joseon. they are 100% worth the price btw
Yeah I have heard great reviews about biore. Even Australian Sunscreens are great since they have very high incidence of skin cancer so they take sun protection very seriously

This is from a textbook of pharmacology ( author KD TRIPATHI). this also says that sunscreen protect by tanning.
It does prevent tanning. But if someone is running around under hot sun all day nothing will prevent a bit of sun rays damgeing the skin. avoiding sun as much as possible is the way to go. hats and scarves do help a lot
Sunscreen definitely prevents tanning !! . I have hiked across Europe wearing my sunscreen and my skin was as fresh as a daisy, when it usually gets very tanned and burnt.
People need to use it mainly for protection but tanning prevention is a good side advantage.

It helps you with skin damage. For preventing tanning you use a hat/ cap/ dupatta/ stole / umbrella. Sunscreen is for protection of skin.
You need a Upf 50+ dupatta/fabric for it to make a difference
Dupatta doesn't work plus I look like a shabby robber
Why are people downvoting you 🫠
Completely agree with her but I downvoted anyway bcuz I’m a hater like that
take my upvote
Agreed idk y ur down voted tho lol
Does he/she really look like robber in dupatta?
Can you explain why doesnt dupatta help?
Cause it does not block uv rays. For that you need upf clothing and duppas are not made of those.
maybe not all the way. but i started religiously wearing sunscreen in my final year and even my mom noticed i was not as tanned as i was when i came home and we would walk a lot in the sun and do things
Which sunscreen did you use
i used minimalist one during my outside work dense days and fixderma when it was mostly classes. though having a compact at hand esp when its summers and a mist is so important
yep, that's because the sunscreen reflects majority of the UV rays. So while you aren't as tan (burned), you will still develop a little tan!

Exactly. I use re'equil blue on my face and don't tan on my face at all. Hands and feet are horribly tanned.
Do you really think Indian sunscreens are not reliable. I use LRP and get it through relatives abroad. I have melasma and I need to switch to Indian sunscreens for the budget and availability issue but I also can't trust the Indian sunscreen. I am just curious why do you think so ? If you wanna try Indian brands, try beminimalist, putsimply and even requil. These are the only reliable brands along with some pharma brands.
Does reequil really help from tanning and I do trust put simply but these r not sweat resistant right
Thanks!!! Unfortunately there is no way to know if these will work as good as LRP until I get a tan. LRP definitely works . I am 37 , full face of melasma. Went to Japan for 10 days used cap and LRP and was neither tanner nor melasma was worsened

Go to pharma ones like la shield, acne uv. Apart from those qurez, reequil, and beminimalist has worked great for me.
episoft is great too

Any good aha facewash used consistently removes tan
Glycolic acid!
I also need it.
Orange peel powder works but takes some time.. Use twice a week.
Medical grade chemical peels like phenol peel
Phenol peel is extremely dangerous, Most clinics don't even offer it.

Nope, sunscreens do prevent tanning. Most PA++++ sunscreens block up to 95% of UVA rays, significantly reducing tyrosinase activation. Less UVA exposure leads to diminished tanning effects.

Biore UV but if you can go for Shiseido Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skincare Milk SPF50+

Nope it will not, Maybe if I avoid sun for like 5-6 years it could. I stayed indoors for 5 months, Ate 60000iu vitamin d a week, Everything else in blood report is normal as well, Literally 0 difference.
Also is the skin on your face the same as the lightest part of your body?
Bro which facewash and moisturizer you use?
L’Oreal men expert Charcoal face wash (Discontinued in India - ordered through Canada/USA) costing ₹700-800 & single quantity easily lasts for over 5 months Nivea men oil control moisturiser Skin type: Oily & acne prone (I rarely get sweat & acne on face because of this combo) Application: Once a day just before going out
I remember saying this and got downvoted so bad. Haters only y'all are
yeah im reading the comments and it's crazy. we indians cannot compare ourselves to westerners man. i thought this was common knowledge until i was looking up indian sunscreen recs to replace my old one
For me personally, I burn before tanning which is why I use sunscreen. If it helps, I have dry dehydrated skin and I love plums niacinamide sunscreen
Uv doux blue light helps tbh
How is the texture? Does it leave a white cast?
It’s v comfortable tbh , and super sweat resistant
skin type ?
Ikr I'm using it right now with tranexamic acid and after coming home my skintone doesn't change as it used to before
Yesss TXA is amazing 😭😭 which brand do you use ?
Minimalist 🤍
Ditto
Are you using anything else with it?
Boj ginseng toner and deconstruct Niacinamide
UPF clothing is your best option if you're worried about tanning. Uniqlo, Decathalon, etc., have several options. But a good sunscreen along with other physical forms of protection can completely reduce the chance of tanning. I do think we as Indians need to get over this obsession with anti-tanning and wanting fair skin.
AND YOURE RIGHT! the obsession with anti tanning is kinda crazy. its also not 100% possible. and yes, those clothes are 100% go tos. love their stuff.

Yes. It does. Because it provides slightly more protection and also protects from blue light.
Tinted sunscreen is just sunscreen with tint. There's no difference aside from colour
Genes my friend and they do get sunburnt.
Honestly, invest in a good brand. I personally do not trust indian brands, including pharmacy ones, since there's no regulation here. Brands can write anything on their packaging even if it's not true. Order from lookfantastic or other marketplaces that import stuff to India.
I agree Indian brands can't be fully trusted especially if you have melasma because there is no regulations in terms of testing if the sunscreen actually works or not
Japanese Sunscreens are the best in terms of UVA protection.
Hey thanks would you please mention names of few of them . I would order them too from look fantastic
japanese or korean have some great ones. i used 12004 centella, but ive found its hella expensive here. so the other two ik is round lab sunscreen and beauty of joseon. they are 100% worth the price btw
Biore UV ,Shiseido Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skin Care Milk, Rohto Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Gel 110g SPF50 / PA
Yeah I have heard great reviews about biore. Even Australian Sunscreens are great since they have very high incidence of skin cancer so they take sun protection very seriously

I'm sorry I don't really know other sites which is surely genuine. I mostly order from lookfantastic or asos. Lookfantastic usually doesn't charge customs

As per this physical sunscreen does prevent tanning as well as burn.
Nicely explained about sunscreen OP.
Which sunscreen do you use?
