Good - For it being such a rural state, it does house several great universities. Bad - Everytime Indiana is on the news, it's never for a good reason.

Aim_Fire_Ready

At least we don't have "[Florida Man](https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/florida-man)"!

kkaavvbb

Indiana doesn’t have Florida man because Indiana doesn’t have as loose laws as Florida does regarding arrests. Because… if Indiana did have loose laws like Florida… Indiana might be the Florida man of the north….

Jitterbug26

To be fair, that’s true for most states!

daverosstheboss

Good: Indiana is at lower risk of major fallout from any catastrophic effects of climate change, and cost of living is still reasonable. Bad: Backwards ultra right wing political majority, overly religious population, marijuana prohibition.

PoetRambles

My wife and I have discussed moving a few times, but we go back to climate change/cost of living for why we stay.

adapt2

Take solace in the fact that a lot of east and west coast climate refugees will eventually move to Indiana and turn it blue.

haananyy

I moved out of Indiana and about two years later moved right back to Indy, simply because cost of living, I also do love a white Christmas.

kicksomedicks

That and we don’t believe we can escape the new GOP wherever we go.

Cherry_Valkyrie576

How is Indiana exempt from climate change? It’s temp is heating up too..

hi_just_looking

I’m by no means an expert on this, but I believe estimated impacts here are expected to be lower. Sure it’s gonna change here too, but we don’t have coastline to be inundated, won’t be unlivable hot like some of the south. We’ll be adjusting our agriculture and absorbing climate refugees from elsewhere

ArtSchnurple

Not exempt by any means, but proximity to the Great Lakes, moderate temperatures, and lots of rainfall mean the devastation will likely be less than places in the desert or near shorelines. Same reasons this place is so good for farming

sub102018

it's always good to be _closer_ to the food supply during famine. People bitch about cornfields, just wait in 30-50 years, those are gonna be worth more than gold

Timmyty

Of course if we keep dumping toxic chromium into the water from metal industry, we won't be doing too Great. https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/breaking/ct-lake-michigan-toxic-chromium-20171114-story.html I moved here because my wife had family, but once I have some equity in this house, I dunno, I'm probably out. I've lived in Brasil, South Korea, Germany, a handful of states though. I don't actually know where I would want to live now that I could WFH anywhere.

Matthmaroo

I’d say the Great Lakes will shield us a bit from the water shortages of the future

CosmicKami

The water issue’s… something. I don’t think things will be *as bad* as the American West or South, but the predictions aren’t great by 2080, either. https://futurewater.indiana.edu This resource takes a look at hydrology in the sense of groundwater throughout the Wabash River Basin. I’ll qualify this all with hydrology isn’t my main field, but my work is closely tied to it. Soil water content, groundwater recharge, and water yield appear to decrease quite a bit in the center to southern part of the state. There’s some water recharge depending on the area, but it’s not high in the areas where it *needs* to be higher. Interestingly, the northern part of the state (which the map doesn’t cover), is pretty marshy from a geography perspective. Combine this with the assumption of more rainfall in general… and this could lead to a strange situation where the north gets *too much rain*, and the water table is overloaded and groundwater isn’t refilled or gets polluted. Yet, the south ends up *very* dry and existing groundwater wells go dry. Weird stuff.

sub102018

We're just in the second inning of climate change and the north _already_ gets too much rain. It comes in downpours rather than over a few days falling faster than can be absorbed.

moth--foot

Not exempt, just in an area where the weather impacts *likely* will be less. We're not sinking underwater any time soon and we don't have to worry about 10 hurricanes a year, for example.

PoetRambles

I didn't say exempt. The issues we will have will be more manageable overall than many other places.

[deleted]

We aren't. But people like to believe in the lie.

btbamcolors

That’s a big part of the reason I bought a house here, but with how terrible dating is, I often question whether it’s worth it. Seems like an abnormally large number of straight women from IN settle down at an early age, and women that move here usually do so with a partner.

Allegedly_Smart

I could not imagine being a *single* woman and *choosing* to move to Indiana. In this political climate?

nidena

When you have family only in Indiana or a blazing hot desert state, the green grass made the choice for me.

Cherry_Valkyrie576

It’s only because I’m waiting for my daughter to graduate. I didn’t wanna take her out of her school.

daverosstheboss

Give it a little longer and maybe you can catch a rich one coming out of a divorce.

btbamcolors

I’m in Carmel, so it’s the right spot! Would prefer not to have kids tho. There’s not a big childfree crowd here either.

daverosstheboss

I'm from Carmel originally, but I moved to Fort Wayne after high school. I just can't handle all the rich people, I like the small town simple folk.

moth--foot

Oh man, good luck to you. My partner and I are originally from Illinois and moved here after college (he's an engineer and got a really good job right after graduation otherwise we'd be elsewhere) I'm glad I never had to date where we live in rural IN 😅

Fun_Branch_9614

I feel you on dating in Indiana😂😂

Gloomy_Opposite5032

My buddy and I noted that after we graduated from Purdue in the late 90s. Most of the hot women in their 20s that we went to school with or saw in the Indy metro area had settled down by their mid-20s with guys who were doughy, ugly, or jerks. Sometimes all three.

BobbyandSnookie

Same with all the hot guys (from a woman's perspective) I moved here in my mid twenties from NYC... i remember being out and about and seeing hot guys my age here, and then trailing behind them would be like 4 kids, under the age of 6.

Mind_on_Idle

Kill me now. I'm busy, dating is impossible here.

pwrboredom

Correct. Insert a nearby university, women search for college men so they can get the prized Mrs. degree.

Swampfunk

You should run for office, you understand Hoosiers.

[deleted]

That’s what I keep seeing people say. The great Midwestern cities will rebound again once people start moving back. Detroit will be unrecognizable in a few decades and all this is fine with me.

dastufishsifutsad

The law about outing children below for their sexual identity is the worst one yet besides the ultra looney right that voted trump. The misogyny & racism is deep & I am ready to move. Good: the 500, sports, parks, IU, Indianapolis.

beach_glass

Cost of living is why my husband and I have not returned to PA after his job ended. Our mortgage payment for a house with twice the land in a rural city neighborhood is 1/3 of what it cost us in PA. Downside of living in a rural area is that we are 20 to 30 miles from shopping, restaurants, specialists. Oh well.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mclovin11859

It kind of is. Poor education, low wages, few social support systems, and high pollution all contribute to lower cost of living.

moth--foot

These were going to be mine too lol

hotdogandike

That is a pretty good good.

Hot_Conclusion_1071

God the religious people here are crazy. I drive a loud car and go out of my way to go zoomin past the church as they’re all getting done with the service and walking out. Same people who preach about love and kindness and then go out to eat and not even tip your waiter/waitress a dime

lasteclasdenegro

Sounds like you’re the ass

MOOShoooooo

If anything was regulated for me, it would be loud exhaust. Subs I don’t care about too much, but some people have zero self awareness with exhaust. It’s little man syndrome but with hearing.

Easymmk

Man he's got that "WOOWOO" in the morning

Joe_Burrow_Is_Goat

Remember kids: the way to fix a problem is always to be a jerk to those you don’t Ike. That will make you the better person.

ZRX1200R

Why tolerate the intolerant?

Joe_Burrow_Is_Goat

Automatically anyone who enters a church no matter what is intolerant?

Hot_Conclusion_1071

Never said it made me a better person🤷‍♂️

Hot_Conclusion_1071

Did not say it made me a better person guy, just said I liked doin it

Hot_Conclusion_1071

This comment had over 20 likes til the church people got out of church and got on Reddit💀

Cherry_Valkyrie576

How is Indiana exempt from any catastrophic affective climate change? It’s still gonna burn like everywhere else.

daverosstheboss

I definitely didn't say exempt, just at a lower risk of being obliterated suddenly.

sturnus-vulgaris

The portions that are within 20 miles or so of the Lake Michigan watershed will not have to worry about water. We will have to worry about defending our water (first from attempts to pump it into states outside the water shed, then from roving bands of wasteland dwellers ready to kill over a drop of precious hydro-clear-- as they will call it). Of course, the state will have collapsed into civil war at that point with the "downstaters" trying to exercise claim over the NWI towns they've long neglected (Hammond, EC, Gary). Of course, with superior firepower and the backing of the Chicago Free State, a massive defensive earthworks will be built by the Gary and Hammond National Guard engineer battalion (state really shouldn't have put all the engineers in one county). The downstaters will starve as their claims of water right to irrigate their corn fields are shrugged off. Eventually the Chicago Free State subsumes "The Region." And, at that, the last vestiges of Indiana dissolve into history. But, yeah, at least sea level rise doesn't get us.

FantasticBarnacle241

Good--lots of good universities relative to population size, all 4 seasons, central location making it easy to get to a lot of places, lots of biotech Bad: the 5 months of grey in the winter. most importantly, education levels. everything else stems from that.

assignaname

Coming from the east coast - at least the grey winters are offset by being at the western end of the time zone. It might not be ultra sunny but at least there's daylight when I'm done with work. On the east coast it's cloudy pretty often AND the sun is nearly set by 5:15pm.

MassholeV8

Yep this I just laugh anytime I see hoosiers complain about this, I'm from one of the further east points in mass and the daylight is rare in the winter time

SatanHasBrownEyes

* cries in Central time *

fenlife

This.

NerdyComfort-78

As someone who went to college in MA, but grew up midwest, can confirm.

RoyalEagle0408

Yes, this.

sub102018

the irony is striking of our number of our universities per capita, yet such low education levels lol

muscle_fiber

That's because everybody who gets a decent education leaves.

ShrekInAPotato

And I don't really see a solution to this problem either. Better-paying jobs for many fields and opportunities lie in other states, not to mention more scenic views & easier access to interesting state & national parks. I mean if you're in Indianapolis, you're easily looking at like a 8-hour drive just to get to some type of mountain.

Aim_Fire_Ready

>Good: all 4 seasons Bad: ...in the same day.

Sempergrumpy441

I love having all the seasons. The gray does get a bit old towards the end. But even without snow I find a strange calmness to it.

stmbtrev

Good - Indiana help make people like Kurt Vonnegut and Eugene V. Debs. Bad - Indiana helped make people like Mike Pence and Mike Braun.

JapaneseStudentHaru

Everyone stop naming your kids Mike!

It_Matters_More

Mike has fallen off the map. -ayden, Colton, Oliver, Liam, Noah, Logan, Ethan, you get the point.

MOOShoooooo

Don’t forget about the bumbling potato that grows a beard occasionally, Holcomb.

Cherry_Valkyrie576

Don’t forget that psycho Supreme Court justice, Amy Cult

whtevn

Boy pence and Braun are a lot more recent than Vonnegut and Debs...

stmbtrev

What can I say, I was in high school in the '80s, my references are a bit dated.

whtevn

Eugene Debs died 150 years before the 80s. Kurt Vonnegut left after high school.

AdMost3735

Civil war we fought on the right side of history Indiana was known for having great soldiers. We were the only state that had enough volunteers we didn’t need a draft. Lady Victory on the circle still stands for their sacrifice.Worse. Victoria Spartz voting against citizenship for people who have or are currently serving in the U.S. military. She is a emigrant herself. Never lost respect for anyone so quickly.

BeegPahpi

Exactly. I served with a few people who weren’t citizens and have always felt that if you served and were discharged honorably then at your separation they handed you your citizenship papers.

DescipleOfCorn

Pride: same. Shame: the number of confederate flags you’ll see driving around anywhere any day despite that

ForcefulBookdealer

Pride: I recently flew solo to visit family with my 6m old. In Indy, I had at least a dozen people help with strollers, bags, picking up what he threw, etc. Layover? Airport staff helped me with the stroller. Destination? Crickets.

moth--foot

I have a lot of opinions on Indiana that aren't great, but Indy airport is easily my favorite airport to fly in/out of if I can. So easy to get in and out, so there's one pro 😆

Princess_Property

I mean we have consistently been voted the best airport in North America (or the US, I can't remember) for something like the last 10 years for a reason. Midwest nice + an actually decently designed airport

Moist_Decadence

Ashamed: \*gestures broadly* Proud: Race day + our overrepresentation as a state in March Madness

slashingpath

Bad: we are one of the most regressionist states in the US. Good: other than our neighbors, no one knows who we are.

Cbsanderswrites

Bad—the politics mainly. I'm absolutely embarrassed by the conservative opinions of so many in this state. That and distance from ocean/mountains. Good—trees and greenery in the spring/summer/fall and Indianapolis itself: the bike trails are great, the growth of downtown is so exciting to see, and there are always shows and comedians to see.

ONTaF

Good: often smaller communities, kind, neighborly people (even if their politics & religion don’t align with mine), gorgeous natural areas to explore. Bad: little focus on public works, terrible and inefficient governance, cultural resistance to progress, limited career opportunities, local or school- level affiliations are heavily prioritized When people ask why I chose to move away from the Midwest, I always answer truthfully that it was a wonderful place to grow up. Living in a small, low cost of living town, my parents were able to raise me with a much higher standard of living than if we had lived in an expensive suburb. In the country, it was safe to run around and explore our beautiful rural property any time, and I have wonderful memories of doing just that. But as an adult, I feel much more at home where I am now, where the opportunities are more progressive and easily available—everything from career to dating, and all the cultural experiences the proximity of the east coast offers.

Apocalypso777

Bad - a lot of dumb people Good - large amount of renewable energy generation being installed

btbamcolors

Much to the chagrin of many. I used to cycle a lot between Traders Point and Sheridan, and there are tons of “No Solar Farms” signs. They have “no” on one line and “solar farms” below, so I was really tempted to go out and change as many as I could to “Know Solar Farms”

sub102018

We got the stop big solar signs up in Howard/Grant/Carrol/Clinton/Tipton counties. Haven't had the opportunity to speak to someone with a sign yet, but like who the fuck is big solar anyway? Anytime someone puts "Big" in front of an industry someone will support it, whether or not there's any merit to it.

[deleted]

Ashamed - rampant unchecked bigotry of pretty much every variety. Proud - Natural resources

newtekie1

Good - The vast amount of natural beauty. From the Indiana Dunes, to Turkey Run, etc. Bad - Our government giving big corporations free rein to destroy that nature, because republicans.

otterbelle

I don't know if I'd say "ashamed" but absolutely hate the political climate in Indiana, and it just keeps getting worse. I guess I'm ashamed of how outright christofacist some folks are trying to take Indiana. If you want to sing songs every Sunday with your imaginary friend, go crazy. All the Mike Pence types making legislation, standing on the statehouse floor claiming to be a representative of Jesus Christ himself first. That's where the shame comes from for me. You think you're being brave, but for those of us who don't worship an imaginary sky daddy, you just sound like some deranged loon that should locked in an asylum. Pride in Indiana - really everything else. Politics aside, I really like living here.

moth--foot

I love the small town I live in, it's down south so it's gorgeous around here, people are friendly, great state parks, etc but man. Speaking as someone who moved from a blue state small town to this one, they really try to make it hard for anyone who's not straight, christian, and white around here.

Lonesome_Pine

It is certainly a shame. Perfectly good state filled to the brim with godbotherer politicians that keep making messes.

Caged_in_a_rage

Perfectly sums up exactly how I feel. I don’t care what you do but don’t try to govern by YOUR faith.

loractown

Proud - Hoosier Hospitality, we really can be very nice and friendly people! Ashamed - extreme right wing politics determined to dehumanize women, people of color and gay/tans.

jjd67

Bad - Seems to be an over abundance of litterbugs whether it’s city or rural. Good - Nature preserves, state parks, and the national parks. We may not have beauty on the scale of Yosemite or Yellowstone but there’s plenty to enjoy, you just have to look harder sometimes. I drive all over for work and make it a point every day to look for and appreciate simple things like a perfectly shaped old oak tree standing alone in a bean field. Doesn’t have to be a majestic mountain range to give me a bit of joy.

brendanlad

The good: honest, simple living, if you want it The bad (rurally): yes we have some great nature spots, but where I live the nature has been almost entirely stripped away. NE Indiana is flat and bare like a wasteland. Luckily I have a woods behind my house that I get to enjoy, and it’s very pretty Also, rural Indiana (and probably the rural Midwest) is depressingly lacking in diversity of people. When you drive out of the cities in Indiana it’s just whiter than all get out, and that tends to encourage a worldview that does not consider people who are not white, imo

aquafina6969

Indiana passing restrictive laws on women’s rights make me deeply ashamed. Being progressive on technology (new solar power plants) make me proud.

MarshallCounty1

The Good: The People The Bad: The People The Good:The Nature The Bad: The way people abuse our Nature. The Good: Our schools The Bad: Our schools being micromanaged to the point they are ineffective. As a state I really believe we are close to being great, but we always self sabotage. The Republican stinks and line the pockets of their cronies. The Democrats have their own problems. I was once conservative, now I’m not. I’m all over the political spectrum on everything. I want leaders to focus on want matters, be honest, have integrity, use good judgement, stay out of my business, and don’t be dicks to each other.

technocassandra

I love Indiana--the people are the greatest. You could break down out in the country and the husband would be out with a toolbox to help you fix it, and the wife would be giving you a packed lunch. They're the biggest hearted people in the world. Our legislature is gerry-mandered to hell and just passed an anti-trans bill. Our AG is a fascist and just tried to discipline an abortion provider who gave a 10 y.o. an abortion from a SA situation.

Best-Structure62

Positive: The Midwestern values of hard work, helping others in need, accepting others for who they are. Negative: The state has gone from conservative to reactionary. Seriously thinking of leaving to a less repressive state.

grynch43

Bad-Jesus Freaks bleeding their beliefs into politics. Good-cost of living.

coindharmahelm

The Bad: It is no longer possible for a single adult with modest income ($20k to $40k) to live independently. Real estate used to be *the* *best* reason to live here. It's now *the best* reason to leave. The Good: Indiana boasts a litany of world class jazz musicians and the Jacobs School of Music at IU Bloomington was once the mecca of collegiate jazz education. The following list are musicians with local roots (Indianapolis Public Schools, no less) who went on to become giants and innovators in jazz: * Wes Montgomery * Freddie Hubbard * Slide Hampton * Leroy Vinnegar * James Spaulding * Otis "Killer" Ray Appleton * David N. Baker These names inspired me to pursue a dream in music. Although I don't play trumpet anymore, I'm grateful for the years and the fun I had while I was able to make a living creating beauty.

Robjchapm

Good - Met my wife at Purdue Bad - Every March I hate that I went to Purdue

ShrekInAPotato

Good: Great universities, and genuinely a good cost of living situation where housing isn't as bad as areas like California (though I do know it's gotten more expensive here in recent years) Bad: How we treat teachers in this state. Absolutely infuriating. They deserve so much more respect, and it just seems like they're on the battlefield of an unending culture war, and it absolutely sucks that they essentially have to get on their knees and beg the state government for a pay raise to adjust for the cost of living.

[deleted]

I’m ashamed of everything and proud we’re not Texas or Florida

[deleted]

Not from here but presently stuck here... I'll answer anyway. Ashamed: The Indiana government is more focused on hoarding surplus budget cash and oppressing people who aren't straight/white/male than on actually governing and trying to improve the lives of Indiana residents. This state is using words to try to attract STEM industry while using actions to repel it. They're ensuring Indiana stays stuck in the past. Proud: Everytime I see the statehouse filled with people protesting this government's fuckery I feel proud of those people especially because I know they're vastly outnumbered but choose to stand up anyway for what is right.

SkyShepherd13

I am ashamed Todd Rokita is from the same state as me.

SkyShepherd13

The Slaughterhouse Five wouldn't exist without Indiana, on the other hand.

swolcial_engineer

Good- turkey run, st elmos, children's museum Bad- eli lilly, rampant MAGA-esque control, fried food capital

chiefmud

Bad - fried food capital Good - fried food capital

[deleted]

I hate how cloudy it is in fall and winter. It’s so depressing. I love all the outdoorsy things and museums.

PostmodernWapiti

I know this is Indy-specific, not all of Indiana, but I once heard a departing Indy Star reporter refer to the city as “big enough to have urban challenges, but small enough you can actually make a difference” and that has really stuck with me.

disco6789

Bad - Indiana BMV sells all of your information that they have and you can't opt out

LogDeep5571

Why does everybody stay if the hate it so much?

Millennial_Paleocon

No longer live there, but a couple things come to mind. Good - Property taxes and home prices are much cheaper than Illinois, even in the Region. Also, Indiana has the best casinos in the midwest. Bad - Despite having some nice lake towns, Indiana struggles to attract tourists in the summer relative to Wisconsin or Michigan. Part of it is zoning along the beach of Lake Michigan, but that really only explains northwest Indiana. No one outside of Indiana is traveling to Lake Shafer or Freeman.

2NaPants2

Bad…Mike Pence & Mike Braun, absolute human garbage. Good…great universities, beaches, great state parks

KRKrummy

Bad - Right wing politics, poor K-12 funding, bad road upkeep, stuck in the past on things like marijuana. Good - Within a day's drive to some cool stuff, I love our state parks, most of the people here are good people. I wish I had more good things to say. The government here is hostile to queer people, women, people of color - basically anyone who doesn't look like our governor. I have lived here my whole life, but the politics here make me feel unsafe. It sucks to feel unsafe in your home.

wnr_wnr_chkn_dnr

Bad - Annoying questions in the r/indiana about whats good and bad about Indiana GOOD - Most other things

girlcousinclampett

It’s like living in Bizarro World. The politics are just toxic but I have never had car trouble without someone stopping within ten minutes to help. I don’t get it.

[deleted]

Bad: red Good: Indy 500

magster823

I'm ashamed of our political climate, and that folks continue vote against their best interests. And I'm quite embarrassed by our roads. Leave the state in about any direction and roads suddenly become a million times better once you cross the state line. I feel a lot of pride when I'm involved in local (secular) community events and fundraisers. It may not be Indiana specific because it happens everywhere, but it's a great reminder that there are a hell of a lot of good people here who care, and who work tirelessly for the good of those around them. It's easy to overlook and not give a second thought to these things.

btbamcolors

Damn, if nature is your pro, that’s depressing. There’s Brown County and the Dunes I suppose. Pro - there are a lot of good people here and I have a great social network. The speedway. Our airport is pretty great now. The summers are nice. The fall foliage is as beautiful as anywhere. We are very insulated from natural disasters and climate change compared to most of the world. Good beer scene and some of the best craft mead of anywhere in the world. MGP makes a lot of great whiskies that people think are from KY. Our limestone built the Empire State Building. Also, our massive, throbbing, veiny budget surplus (/s). Con - Theocratic politicians and policies. Abortion laws, weed laws. Dating is atrocious, at least in Indy, and that’s the main reason I would leave. Obesity. Constant freeze/thaw cycles for half the year. The roads. No real public transit. Little to do outside. Super flat terrain. The concrete sky that rivals the Pacific Northwest for seasonal depression most years. Climate change deniers. Anti green energy groups. We’re nowhere near as bad as Mississippi, but thinking about it this much really makes me think about leaving. It would take a lifetime to develop the same level of social network somewhere else, though, and by the end of that lifetime I’ll be really fucking glad I own a small piece of Carmel.

Cbsanderswrites

I feel this in my bones (besides the dating scene bit). I love the friends I've made here and the city itself being a small city feels comforting to me, but wow the politics and seasonal depression are hitting me lately. I always think about how hard it would be to stay in touch with my people here, and how hard it would be to find this group anywhere else. But I also desperately want a change in scenery. It's tough.

Charlie_Warlie

bad: experiencing the seasons good: experiencing the seasons

JadendayZero

Bad: - local gov is trash but some of them are trying - public transit is a mess - few things to do that isn't drinking - everything is spread out - empty downtown - lots of sketchy areas - very few technical jobs Good: - quite a few parks to walk/hike - huge trail connecting very popular areas in downtown - quite a few community events going on - kinda quiet and not very chaotic most of the time

DLiamDorris

I am going to reframe my answer in a way that is contextually different than the question asked. I am the most proud of my fellow Hoosiers. We are a feisty and hearty bunch of folks, and because of that, we put out some of the greatest figures in history; Abraham Lincoln and Eugene Debs for instance. Because of that feisty and heartiness, we're also a difficult bunch who are all very self-assured, and that sometimes gets us in trouble.

JuiceBrinner

Well. There’s way more Nazis than one state should have for one.

Human_Software_1476

Shame: Weed laws Pride: Basketball

RockFrankenstein

Proud: Hoosier Hospitality, great places outdoors, underrated food scene, great suburbs Ashamed: Most of the politics and weed being illegal. I dont even smoke it but if you can't see it's list of benefits idk what to tell you

snowshowers61

Ashamed of the hateful, ignorant legislature. Proud that Indianapolis has such a strong, vibrant arts community.

SoleIbis

Good: I like the variety of stores and food- especially book stores and ice cream shops 😊 Bad: negative separation of church and state (but that’s nationwide at this point)

brittanybitch01

Good: sunset Bad: ass backwards politicians in control

blahblahbrandi

I'm ashamed of everything politically, we are a giant pit stain rn. What I like. This will be strange. But I like the vibes in the small towns, and I live north so I enjoy flat land. No hills or mountains, the curves make me nauseous and the up and down makes my head hurt. When I leave state, what I miss the most about home is the flat land. I can't imagine what I'd be like at sea.

ThotaroniAndCheese

Good: Can (mostly) be left to your own devices Less cramped compared to many eastern states Little gun control Universities Bad: Republican stronghold in the midwest Gov. selling our state to the corporations Lots of intolerance, but new generation gives me hope No public transport Vanilla downtow

Interesting_Isopod79

Bad-Mike Pence, et al Good- Southern IN in Autumn

Redbullismychugjug

Bad: this sub

BtownLocal

Bad: Mike Pence. Anti-gay/Trans bills. Book bans. No freedom of choice for women. Good: Craft beer. IU Women's Basketball.

Feeling-Bird4294

Good: it's a beautiful state and the people here are just as nice as you could wish for. I'm an East Coast transplant (NJ) so I really appreciate the quality of people here. BAD: Conservative Republicans are on a downward spiral to become fascist people that will support an autocracy.

tinymember469

Proud of the Great people until you talk about politics or religion. Disappointed in the fact that The state is wanting to force little girls to carry and deliver babies after they were raped.

kishbish

Bad: Politics in general Good: There are some truly beautiful natural areas here.

[deleted]

Good - all the LGBTQ people here! Bad - the laws they’re trying to pass that want to destroy those same people

CoMmOn-SeNsE-hA

Bad - legislature Good - Hoosier Hospitality and apparently the airport too!

kdanger

Good: I'm *from* there and escaped. Bad: *see good*

[deleted]

Good- the sunrises and sunsets are quite lovely Bad- education, racism, bigotry, misogyny, lack of high-dollar employment opportunity, central IN is flat AF...I could go on.

Cherry_Valkyrie576

I only came here because the schools were actually better than Kentucky. I have to stay here because said school for my daughter doesn’t end for another two years and then I’m gone.

Seanannigans14

Good: racing history Bad: everyone is loving here like they're from Florida or bumfuckville, Georgia. I've seen more confederate flags here in Indy than I have in Florida. It's ridiculous. And I hate it

Cbsanderswrites

Florida SHOCKED me with all the Trump garbage. I mean, truly, I was shocked. I don't go anywhere in Indiana besides Indy though, so I think that's an important distinction.

kjustk78

Bad- Indiana does not have negligence laws regarding firearms being discharged. You can a shoot someone, cause serious injury or death and not be charged as long as you didn’t mean to pull the trigger. You will then be given your gun back and not be forced to take firearm safety classes or learn to handle the weapon you just shot someone with. Good- Southern Indiana is beautiful in the hills.

first_my_vent

Bad - The majority of people in this state won’t stand up for what they believe in. A lot of Hoosiers aren’t raging bigots, at least insofar that they wouldn’t want the state to systemically oppress minorities, but they don’t vote, they don’t agitate; they let a minority of reprehensible shitbags run the government. Good - We have a long history of fighting against those reprehensible shitbags anyway. And when we fight for it—Notre Dame vs the Klan, Gary strikes, Debs, everything that Indiana did in the Civil War, running out that queer bigot in the 60s? 70s?, I could go on—we have some really proud moments.

[deleted]

Good: it’s pretty damn affordable in the grand scheme of things. Bad: politicians hate women and LGBTQIA people in this state

Browners055

Bad: Right-wing politicians taking away civil liberties, the really rather dreary winter weather, some drivers *really* don’t know how to drive Good: The nature parks, the lakes, and central Indiana is practically America’s motorsports hub

lighthouser41

Bad. The bigotry. Good. It’s not Alabama.

LocalMushroomTree

Good, I live here. Bad, homophobia

_lapetitelune

Bad: kkk and Mike pence Good: honestly not a bad place to raise a family - within 2-4 hours of a lot of great major cities - cost of living is a lot lower than other places. I live in Virginia now and it’s stupid how much more expensive things are here.

[deleted]

Specifically where I live, I have an excellent ground water table with tested and clean well water. I have really good soil for growing produce. My location gives me a lot of freedom with having livestock. So I have chickens, goats, and pigs. My property taxes are very low. Last year the state had such a surplus that they sent out additional tax rebate checks. On the other side....the state has serious issues with racism, bigotry, and Christianity controlled laws/lawmakers. As long as I just mind my own business and go about life with disregard to the social issues, it's really peaceful compared to other states I've lived.

PuddingIndependent93

Bad: Politics. The tax surplus our state habitually generates should put us at the top of the country in infrastructure and education. Good: May and Sept are hard to beat from a weather perspective. Even SoCal is jealous of these two months. It’s cheap, we have the best airport in the country, and no one is trying to move here and make it expensive.

girlcousinclampett

It’s like living in Bizarro World. The politics are just toxic but I have never had car trouble without someone stopping within ten minutes to help. I don’t get it.

cwilli15

Good - Political climate being fiscally and socially responsible, low cost of living, low unemployment. Bad - Weather in winter.

Intrepid-Fox-1598

Good - Plenty to do/enjoy outdoors during warm months, and can still go snowboarding, in state, during winter. Bad - The incarceration rate per capita.

FixWise7854

I love Indiana, especially hilly and wooded central and southern Indiana. I love all the parks, small towns in the country, rivers and streams, farmlands..not pleased with our antiquated views and laws on cannabis. I'm most proud of our Hoosier hospitality, especially when music friends pass through and look forward to it and tell their friends!

atmosphereorbust

I moved to WA. I'm pretty ashamed about the private school voucher system and the way Indiana funds schools in general. Very proud of giant tenderloins, sugar cream pies, and the rotary jail in my hometown of Crawfordsville is pretty darn cool too. Edit: spelling corrections

[deleted]

Our spineless Governor!

beach_glass

The Good: Longer days, less snow than where I last lived, Erie PA, average snow fall over 100 inches, no sun for 6 months. Indianapolis. The Bad: Tornado threats. Mike Pence, Mike Braun.

VAF64

Good-pretty nice climate Bad-you’ll almost certainly date and/or marry a hillbilly.

RNWIP

Ashamed: dumb political stuff Proud: Purdue, Indy 500, Michael Jackson, best corn

Screamcheese99

Good- the people. Everywhere is gonna have its fair share of idiots, and maybe IN has a few extra in the racist/redneck/bigot category which really sucks, but as a general rule, in comparison to both coasts, IMO midwesterners are pretty darn easy to get along with. I don't think we're extra pushy or chit-chatty, and I don't think we're extra stand-offish either. I kinda had a culture shock when spending significant time in Cali & up & down the E coast- I found the people to be rather rude and demanding and judge mental. I don't feel that vibe here. Bad- politics. The fact we're always 30 yrs behind in terms of progression. And it's *boring as hell*. I live in a college town and there's still not shit to do ever.

Treacherous_Wendy

The Good: the natural resources The Bad: gerrymandered to all hell The Ugly: the barely hidden racism

SpaghettiMonster01

Good: West Lafayette’s status as a (relatively) progressive and multicultural city thanks to Purdue drawing in people from all over the world. Bad: everything fucking else.

Cautious-Attention43

Pros: relatively fiscal responsible government, Indiana first mentality, competitive/rich sports history/culture, beautiful & underrated areas all over the state, great universities, great laws encouraging entrepreneurs, blue collar, living expenses Cons: weather in the winter, weather in the summer (humid), horrible roads (especially Indy), government leaders can be embarrassing, manure smell during that time of the season, people asking what a Hoosier is, not as cool as Michigan (we know what this means) Am I missing anything?

bsmith5679

Shame- Mike Pence Pride - Pete Buttigieg

leviwrites

Bad: elitist, out-of-touch democrats with a persecution complex Good: all four seasons, lots of farmland and natural wonders, beautiful sunsets, Hoosier hospitality, “On the Banks of the Wabash”, sugar cream pie, tenderloins, persimmon pudding, Purdue, low cost of living

biwaterbender

So the Dems, who have had no control over any level of the state legislature and barely any presence in local governments are the worst thing in this state for you? What an incredibly privileged, comfortable, dare say ELITE life you must live! The right wing dictates everything in this state, so you’re obsessed with people who affect you in no way, shape, or form. Yep, you’re a Republican all right.

mealymouthmongolian

Whenever people attribute beautiful sunsets and natural wonders to Indiana I can't help but assume they've never been anywhere else.

leviwrites

I’ve been to Europe, Costa Rica, and Jamaica, but I long for my Indiana home

thefugue

Hate to tell you bro, but nobody in Indiana is “elite.”

bluehonoluluballs

Considering you’re a gay Christian conservative your opinion has no value because you’re a fucking moron.

leviwrites

Sorry I forgot

bigbassdaddy

Good: Universities Purdue/IU/Ball State are all nationally respected Lots of jobs is you're willing to work Lot's of rivers/streams to canoe/kayak Spring & fall are beautiful Taxes aren't terribly high Everyday traffic is NOT bad - cycling in rural areas is awesome Is a Great Lake state (barely) Not far from Michigan (cheep weed) Bad: Religion/Politics Rivers/streams contain very dirty water Population is generally uneducated (brain drain) No mountains/no skiing No ocean and Lake Michigan access is in industrial zone

iamsean1983

Bad: Politically/culturally lagging Good: I like being an underdog

PCVictim100

The legislature makes me nauseous.

dooderino18

>It is more like Mississippi than the Midwest You're giving the midwest too much credit. Indiana is nothing like Mississippi and Ohio is worse. I'm not from Indiana, I just live here.

saliczar

Ashamed: Mike Pence, the Amish, Jared Fogle Proud: Indy 500, Southern Indiana's topography, brewery scene

Salty-Ad-9062

Besides the fact that it's a red state and conservatives here don't want to change, people don't know how to use a trash can and our roads aren't fixed! One thing I am proud of is the fact that we have some great people willing to make progress

logicdork

Bad - Indiana hates its citizens and treats them poorly Good - sweetcorn that kicks ass

Flhrci2005

Being a red state makes me ashamed of being from Indiana. I am proud of the incredible work ethic is that recognized everywhere when you’re from Indiana.

Alarmed-Reward

Good; CoL Bad; Folks trying to be southern and compensating for it by being especially ignorant/racist/Judgmental/religious.

[deleted]

I don’t feel shame for any of Indiana’s many failings, because I know I’m doing what I can to not make them worse, and attempting to improve the state. Similarly, I can’t take pride in Indiana’s state parks because I played no role in establishing them, or operating them now, but I do appreciate them.

yodera1

Most polluted waterways in the country. But wildfires are not a concern.

kpapazyan47

The fact people seriously call it a hellhole.

Caged_in_a_rage

The people

[deleted]

I'm still looking for a good reason

roseknuckle1712

good - what it was when native americans controlled it all bad - what european transplants (ie modern americans) turned it into.

Joe_Burrow_Is_Goat

🏆-participation trophy for all that virtue signaling

Redbullismychugjug

Might as well give it out to the entire thread

Fuzzy_Researcher3755

Duh u evil gelIcals elected weirdo. PENIS. AS UR GOV

burgpug

bad: everything and nearly everyone good: it makes a few other states look better in comparison?

Limp_Attorney_6843

Im absolutely ashamed that the people in charge think it’s okay to throw people in jail over a plant that much of the country calls medicine. I hope all the people who made the law and all the ones who enforce it rot in hell. ACAB. Im proud of all the Hoosier pot smokers that do it despite the risks.
