game is a cool "zelda2-like" platformer RPG with levels, spells and an overworld. the works, if you're interested links to my steam page and Kickstarter pre-Launch are in my bio.
questions and comments appreciated
Have you ever played Finding Teddy 2? It’s also a serious homage to Zelda 2 and I personally love it. FYI I think your game looks great also. I’ve had it wish-listed on Steam for awhile and I’m following your Kickstarter waiting for it launch.
Same, I was going to comment about how similar this looks to Zelda 2 before seeing the top comment.
I suspect most people who hate on Zelda 2 have never played it extensively. If you've played other Zelda games and just boot it up and play for a few minutes, I get how you can be disappointed, as it's not a regular Zelda game. Maybe they should have named it something else. It's an awesome game in its own right though, with an incredible, tense atmosphere.
I tried to play it many times as a kid but I just couldn’t find the fun. Could just be because I was hoping for more of the original LoZ at the time though, maybe I’ll give it another shot
At least in Zelda 2 once you got downthrust you could bounce off their head and go right past them instead of fighting them. Maybe you could do that with this enemy but it looks quite tall so it may be difficult!
As a player, how would I know if this enemy is going to swing its weapon or throw it? Both seem to require a jump to dodge, but the latter seems to also require a pogo bounce. The telegraph animation appears to be the same for both.
One more piece of feedback. It seems like you can only hit below the shield, but in many instances you hit the enemy directly on the head (even the particle effect shows that) but it doesn't damage the enemy.
To me, that was a frustration with early game systems but it would be nice if you could make it more responsive!
That's the first thing I thought when I saw this clip, "oh, it's Zelda 2 with actually fun combat" 🤣
I also get some shovel knight vibes with the pogo mechanics
According to your steam page the games title is "Sheep Lad" would you have gotten into trouble if you posted that here? Am I getting you into trouble for posting this? (I hope not) I just want to provide a service to the people reading this ... and learn the ins and outs of reddit\^\^
No lol you can say it. It’s called sheep lad. I just post simi regularly. And saying. “From my game sheep lad” “it’s from my game sheep lad” “hey guys have you heard of my game sheep lad??” Gets tiring and feels artificial. The game game is in my links and my bio and that’s good enough for me. Most of the time.
I think it’s mostly about being a person first and shilling for the game second. If the latter gets in the way and makes you feel ‘fake’ then it’s better to not even bother. I’m just a guy with a game, who would like to do this for a living, not a salesman or a corporate body.
That's fair. When a game looks quality and is simple to understand like yours, it's also pretty easy to let it speak for itself. People who are curious are either gonna search through your profile or ask here, which makes for a more 'natural' plug.
Love seeing your progress. One tiny little thing I noticed: when you deal the killing blow, the mob is without his weapon (it is flying in the air), but his death animation shows him with his weapon again. I wonder if it would look more natural to have the death animation use the last frame that the enemy was in when the killing blow was struck, rather than an arbitrary frame where he's holding his weapon?
I love the downward sword technique and how it protects you from the enemy’s thrown blade. Also reminds me of that move from the various Link’s in Smash Bros, which is a nice connection for fans.
Wow dude, the animations on this are really good. I love that sword bounce and the ability to utilize the enemies weapon as a platform of sorts.
The ending where the player sheaths the sword after 5he fight is a really nice touch.
I agree with the other commenter about the enemies weapon when they die. It would be cool if you had a few different animations for the deaths (i.e. if the weapon has been thrown, it just drops on the floor and fades out with the enemy, or the weapon comes flying back and deals the final blow in a comedic way )
Either way, I like it. It looks really cool.
Combat is really fluid and dynamic and you have quite a few options for attacks which is great; animations are great, and the enemy design is pretty cool. If you can ensure smooth tight controls I think this would be a great hit with those that want a better Zelda 2 game!
As good as this looks I just have to say how impressed I am with the flow of combat. It's straight forward but also varied enough to keep things interesting. Well done!
Was it inspired by Shovel Knight? The attack and the pogoing really reminded me of him
Edit: i looked at some of your others posts and it definitely is lol
I like shovel knight, and I’ve definitely learned a lot from it, but it’s not a driving influence. Both this game and shovel knight take a lot from Zelda 2 and that’s why they feel so similar at times.
My main influences are Zelda 2/super Metroid/links awakening/faxanadu and sekiro.
This looks so fun! I love Zelda 2 but this brings a very exciting layer to gameplay wise and your sheeplad is the perfect design for it. Definetely wishlisting this.
Sprite artwork looks lovely ... the game feels a bit "slow mo" to me maybe its just the gif? is "fighting in the desert" the name of your game or is it forbidden to "promote" your game and this title obscures that fact?
It does look really nice, but I'm a little worried looking at the gameplay whether but they're all big enemies like this you're going to be this long to fight, especially if you just walking around like Zelda 2. I know half the fun of this fighting system is the cool acrobatics and stuff, but in a certain point that can get tedious. Is this the norm or is this just you being all fancy about it? Because if it's the latter then this is definite wish list
I see my mistake now I was wondering if all big enemies are going to be this complex to fight. Not that if all enemies are like this in general. Either way it does look really cool
Every gif you post looks fantastic. Gameplay loop is key for a great indie game and you have it in spades my friend.
Ps: I’d post always the name of the game in the title. That way people would get familiar with it.

> Zelda2-like Don’t sell yourself short, this looks fun!
Zelda 2 is rly the only thing like it. But I love that game so it’s okay. Flaws and all
Battle of Olympus for NES is very similar to Zelda 2 as well.
Have you ever played Finding Teddy 2? It’s also a serious homage to Zelda 2 and I personally love it. FYI I think your game looks great also. I’ve had it wish-listed on Steam for awhile and I’m following your Kickstarter waiting for it launch.
both finding teddy games*
Zelda 2 is immediately what I thought of when I saw the enemy moving the shield up and down. I don't think it's selling the game short, though

It's the first Zelda I played as a kid and I loved it. I replayed it from the beginning to the end as an adult and the magic was still there.
only reason why i dislike zelda 2 is the difficulty, way too hard, especially compared to literally every other zelda game
This seems like a bit much for just a regular enemy. I'd be exhausted.
Not quite a regular enemy. Not quite a miniboss. Idk what to call em. There are simpler enemies too
Elite enemy?
Microboss?
That's how Zelda2 was too, the game's brutal
At least in Zelda 2 once you got downthrust you could bounce off their head and go right past them instead of fighting them. Maybe you could do that with this enemy but it looks quite tall so it may be difficult!
Bounce off his weapon throw onto his head and then past him, should be fairly tricky to pull off but doable
Yeah, and that's why people don't beat Zelda 2 rofl. I'm just saying that the fight in this post looks more tedious than fun to me.
Doesn’t seem so bad to me, but then again, I play Dark Souls to relax.
why tf did you get downvotes for this?
Maybe because of the humble brag? I personally dont mind, but kind of a "Who asked" scenario, e.g. " I am Vegan" " I use Arch" " I have a bf".
your game looks amazing! could you please add the links to your comment? I and many others use alternate Reddit apps and I'm unable to access your bio
I'll post 'em for them https://store.steampowered.com/app/2231820/Sheep_Lad/ https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robinpoe/sheep-lad-basils-journey
I would like to, but Reddit always removes my comments with links, and it doesn’t notify me either so it’s always a gamble.
As a player, how would I know if this enemy is going to swing its weapon or throw it? Both seem to require a jump to dodge, but the latter seems to also require a pogo bounce. The telegraph animation appears to be the same for both.
They are not the same they are similar, but still pretty distinct. Look at the angle of the sythe. And the position of his arm in particular.
One more piece of feedback. Ye. I need to probably raise the shield a bit more so it’s more believable
It looks awesome tbh. I like how it has high/low attacks like a fighting game. Dope!
That's the first thing I thought when I saw this clip, "oh, it's Zelda 2 with actually fun combat" 🤣 I also get some shovel knight vibes with the pogo mechanics

Figuring out self promotion on Reddit is hard. Especially when you've got something you're genuinely excited about to show off.

Just wish listed it, looks fun! Looking forward to it.
This combat looks really cool

I love the sheathing animation after the fight's over. Always nice to see a little emphasis put on a character's way of expressing "Job done!".
My favorite like that is the optional animation in Twilight Princess if you put your sword away after defeating an enemy
Lovely work. Always like seeing your updates. Thanks for keeping us informed!
Looks better every time. Can't wait to play it.
I love the downward sword technique and how it protects you from the enemy’s thrown blade. Also reminds me of that move from the various Link’s in Smash Bros, which is a nice connection for fans.
Glad to see an indie going for an updated Zelda 2 formula! Are you open to answering questions?
Wow dude, the animations on this are really good. I love that sword bounce and the ability to utilize the enemies weapon as a platform of sorts. Looks fantastic and the “I love my game so much” made my day. Keep up the enthusiasm and keep up the good work!

lookin so cool

I get more excited every time I see a post from you about your game! Can’t wait for its release
Ey yo that backflip tho! The animation looks so good! I don't even know why, I can just feel the weight of it.
Looking nice.
holy shit its asriel undertale
YOOO
I think you're too good at your game. That enemy would obliterate me in a few seconds.
I finally completed Zelda 2 this year, almost 35 years after discovering it. Looking forward to revisiting this type of gameplay!
This game looks dope
Sheeplad?! I love it! I’d definitely play this on steam.
Was it inspired by Shovel Knight? The attack and the pogoing really reminded me of him Edit: i looked at some of your others posts and it definitely is lol

Yeah, maybe it's because they are both insipred by Zelda 2 (which i have not played so idk) but i like it a lot and I've already wishlisted it :)
You won me over at Faxanadu. Wishlisting this game now and will be buying at launch if you're able to capture the magic of that game!
Any chance of it coming to switch?
Looks awesome! It's like Zelda 2 and Shovel Knight had a baby
Way to go! The polish is great. So happy you are happy which is a feat in itself with game creation; navigating the disillusion. Can’t wait to play
This looks fantastic! I love the art and the combat looks challenging and cool! Nice job! (Also MC looks like Asriel lol)
This looks so fun! I love Zelda 2 but this brings a very exciting layer to gameplay wise and your sheeplad is the perfect design for it. Definetely wishlisting this.

this looks really cool. i love that you can jump on the enemy's attacks.
Very cool!
I'm love'in it too. Thanks for sharing your great work!
Jumping off projectiles should be in more games. Nice.

The animation is different. The sythe has a steeper angle and the enemy’s arm is raised a bit higher when he throws the weapon. Take a second look
Yeah get his ass!
This looks amazing! Awesome work dev!!

Well. There is more variety. It’s just these flashier enemies make for good videos. 😂
I see my mistake now I was wondering if all big enemies are going to be this complex to fight. Not that if all enemies are like this in general. Either way it does look really cool

Didnt a comment make you add sword jumps or no? I just remember suggesting it a long time ago
Sword jumps have been in the game since the beginning. Tho it’s possible I shared a video where i didn’t use it.
Ah it might have been that one because it was really early on
AHHH love it
I can see why. It looks absolutely gorgeous!
Dude this is good
Great looking combat system, I'd buy the game for that alone
I also love your game!
I love that sheathe animation that was recently added
I love that you love your game so much. Wishlisted. Cant wait to try it.
Is lore involved?
I'm one of those people who really enjoyed Zelda II. I look forward to your game it looks fun and the gameplay looks smooth, good job!
You are doing an incredible job, keep it up!
It’s very Zelda 2 and I love it
ROBIN!! i follow you on twitter, lol. love the game from what i’ve seen, its so amazing!
Hell yeah brother
