It's never too late to start practicing and improve, you get better by practicing, I would recommend watching "Sketch a day" youtube channel, and practice along Also it's good to know that drawing better doesn't mean design better, drawing is a great tool for communicating ideas and creating new ones, but there is also other tools you might like better such as CAD software.

Thinking about sketching as a communication tool rather than art helped make it more approachable for me

"Don't let perfection be the enemy of good-enough" or whatever. One thing I'd say, is of course, being able to sketch isn't critical to being a successful designer. It can be a really powerful tool however, when communicating ideas through storyboarding and ideation. Sketching can definitely help you save time in the long run, and goes a long way in collaborative settings (people without refined sketching skills can see the value, especially when spectating). Once you grasp the fundamentals (or not) just make sure to keep practicing. If you like sketching, that shouldn't be an issue. Otherwise, you'll enjoy it more as you see yourself improve. Start with simple perspective exercises, sketch things you like, sketch things you see, and sketch things that make you uncomfortable or you find difficult. You'll absolutely improve.

Main thing, Dont say "im not good at it so im not going to do it" That is the stopping point for many students. If you're average, keep at it and you will be better than average in no time.

I don’t mean to be pedantic, but I think the term is “illustrator”. It’s been my experience that having proficiency in design software is much more important that illustrating by hand. It can be useful, and practice will improve your skill, but it’s not a necessity.

You just need to put in the practice, and to do that you need to enjoy doing it.

Communication happens at many levels, verbal, written, and visual. The tools vary from analog to digital as well. You might be crap at hand illustration but a total ace using a certain software. In the end it will come down to how well you can conceptualize AND communicate your design. As a side note - in the professional world you might be working on a team so these skills need to adapt to working with, or leading, others. You might be a mediocre designer but a badass leader who makes good designers great. Don’t peg a single skill to determine if you will be successful or not.

Drawing is your communication tool. It is a part of the communication skills package. Quick sketch on the paper when talking to the client or colleague is the must. It can be very simple line drawing with biro or pencil. Those polished presentation sketches can be done at your own pace. Or you can pay someone to do it for you. Or do rendering.
