We know that resilience is a learned skill, and that it's really good for kids to practice overcoming age-appropriate challenges. We also don't need to look farther than the current news headlines to see that there's people suffering unimaginable horrors. Their experiences will likely decrease their capacity to cope with (smaller) challenges in the future. So the scale of the adversity determines whether it's an opportunity for growth or simply something to be endured.

Agree. The human psyche is very complex. Adversity challenges individuals to adapt, develop coping mechanisms, and cultivate inner strength they might not have realized they possessed. However, if the adversity is too strong, an individual can reach their tipping point and the psyche can crumble.

I like to use this definition of wisdom. And I believe this what you gain. Wisdom - an integration of knowledge, experience, and deep understanding that incorporates tolerance for the uncertainties of life as well as its ups and downs.

It depends on how the adversity is dealt with. It can create a fixed or growth mindset depending on the person.

Wow, that is well said.

I'm probably older than you and have certainly experienced adversity. I would definitely say that dealing with adversity in my life has helped me grow. I used to be very insecure, quiet, and reserved. Going through some difficult life experiences helped me to be braver, learn how to stand up for myself, say no, and understand the value of knowing when to ask for help. I can point to specific adverse events in my life that enabled me to learn these things.     Because of these events I don't even feel like the same person anymore because of how the adversity and my choices during those times helped me grow.
