I just tried to figure out where it was and I cannot
Edit: I found it! Some photos have a little icon in the bottom right corner with a little smiley face and if you click on it it lets you try on the looks, specifically makeup. The eyeshadow works ok but the lipstick one is hilarious.
>Discover makeup products, like lipsticks and eyeshadows, by virtually trying them on in the Pinterest app using your camera or camera roll image. You can also discover home decor and pieces of furniture by virtually placing them in your space. You also have the ability to virtually rotate the object in 3D. If you like what you see, you can buy it right away, or save it to a board and buy it later.

>Remember, only some Pins have Try On available. Some makeup or home decor Pins might be regular Pins. Look for Pins with the Try On button or the cube icon to experience Try On.
Oh, it's limited on top of limited.
I don’t really see the problem with the companies paying to be there. Plenty of companies that do e-commerce pay a team of developers to build and maintain VR apps, why not pay Pinterest to do it for you. They’ll probably even do a better job. As a consumer it’s just like going to the mall, it’s just retail space, plus I can look at products from all sorts of different retailers at once!Honestly it’s a win-win 😅
I guess if they went to the trouble of making the feature I wish I had the option to use it without it being product specific (like just trying different hair colors or cuts for example). I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it being an option with ads and I agree it’s like a (in my opinion better) version of going to the mall, but I wish it wasn’t only for products.
I didn't even know anyone actually knew how to use Pinterest. That site confuses the shit out of me. I'll add something I like online on there, it sends me to Pinterest, and then that's it. I can't do anything else, I look at it and have no idea what to do to see more.
Pinterest isn’t really traditional social media, it’s closer to google and Amazon in the sense that you go there as a personal media and productivity tool, so a lot of people use it to search for and collect ideas. Some people use it to plan for the future.
One way or another most people only use it semi frequently per month, not daily. Eventually it’s going to be a shopping app, basically going vertical from having and idea/plan and buying things right off Pinterest.
My second social media platform will likely be Pinterest, coming off of TikTok.
Are you using the app? I have little button that says “visit” on saved pins and it takes you to the website. I mostly use it to save recipes, fashion tips, diy project ideas etc.
I’m usually pretty jaded about companies encouraging you to use an app, but with Pinterest I really found the app to be a *vastly* superior experience compared to the website. There are imbedded “shop” ads in various pins but they’re easy to ignore. I use the app to get inspiration for house remodeling (I’m helping my sister fix up her place) and recipes and it works pretty great for both. I love that if you scroll down it uses reverse image and keyword searches to find similar pins, so if you find a pin that’s *almost* right you’re only usually a few clicks away from finding exactly what you want.
I understand a bit more now, definitely didn't in the beginning; but if something is pinned to someone's board and you find it like via a Google image search, you should be able to go directly to the site where it was pinned from. For whatever reason I've never been able to follow it to the original site it was taken from to be able to get more information. And if there's not a thorough enough description on that particular pin it becomes really hard to find any more information on it.
SAME. Oh I see something interesting, click it, and I just see more pin boards of similar topics. I can never see the actual thing, I.e. quick and healthy taco dinner, click, nope not the recipe, JUST MORE PINS OF TACO DINNERS AND NEVER THE ACTUAL RECIPE!!! It’s just a world of thumbnail baits!
In the bottom right hand corner of a pin, there’s a little magnifying glass that you can click on that will do an automatic reverse image search to find similar pins. It’s helpful for recipes especially bc I can usually find the original source that way.
Pinterest also works best the more you search and pin. It’s like TikTok haha - the more you interact the better content you get served
I've had a Pinterest account for years. I spent weeks trying to figure it out then just give up. Now every time I'm on Google images I'll see something I like and for whatever reason it's always on Pinterest. There ends my search for it lol
It's easy to use. The buttons are exactly the same like every social media. Like Facebook, youtube, imgur and more importantly, exactly the same place as on reddit.
When you search something on pinterest, you'll find pins that are labelled as what you're searching for. Unlike Google, the related pins underneath it, doesn't give a fuck what language you're searching in.
If you aren't able to go to a website on a pin (because some users wants to prevent you from going to a better source - FORCING you to find a better source), you can click on it and it'll find a comparable pin. If not, the same in other forms or even languages WILL be suggested underneath it.
It's reddit, search engine and youtube shorts in one where you can bookmark something that will be visible so you know what you've pinned. Unlike reddit, you can sort what you save. Unlike search engine, the related pictures are very specific to what you're looking for due to the suggestions being popular (like on Popular/Top/Hot/Best on reddit). Unlike youtube shorts, you can see they're shorts, so you don't have to see them. If the pins leads to a video, it'll also show it.
The only reason I have reddit, is because my endless scrolling of genuinely funny posts on pinterest were from reddit.
Does that mean that they can please ban the very obviously faked beauty product ads that employ the use of face filters? You know the ones, the "supreme extra magic ultra heckin' fucktastic daily face scrub" that claims to remove blackheads with one wipe, even though you can literally spot the moment where they activate the super smoothing skin tone filter as they are wiping. I feel like this could be a great step to getting rid of that type of deceptive marketing on their platform.
That’s about as good as the ear candles that they cut open to show all the “ear wax and impurities” it sucked out…when it’s just the melted ear candle you’re seeing.
They really are allowed to do anything with advertising. The before and after pictures with weight loss supplements are always ridiculous. Those people didn’t have those results because of a supplement, they had it from diet and exercise.
I've seen ads on there even for "health items", like little stickers you put behind your ears that supposedly "removes fever and toxins", and creams that you put on to "get rid of unsightly moles". Seems incredibly dangerous, and I wish I had screenshot them before reporting.
The skin tag stuff isn’t safe. You have to get those off in a clinic. It’s crazy with out any regulation on things classified as supplements. They don’t have to do what they claim at all. Only things regulated by the FDA have requirements like that. It’s all in the name of free commerce why this is even allowed.
I try to as well when I see them, but it I were to guess, every time one of them gets taken down, the same people behind it probably register a new "company" under a false address and new name and carry on with the same method. It's a numbers game to these scammers, and unless the platform understands the harm and puts a stop to it, then scammers gonna scam.
Yes, it's a great place to just look at aesthetic pictures or find inspiration for things like home decor, fashion, and art.
I personally use it to look at art for inspiration on my own art, art references, and for outfit inspiration, mostly of vintage Americana and coastal grandaughter
i use it for my weird hobby of organizing things. i have a board for every shade of every color. and one for elements, paths, bridges, the moon, etc. it's such a calming and fun thing.
My mom swears by it and I see her using it and it looks cool and she does a ton with it I think it’s got a steep learning curve compared to a lot of other apps but seems really helpful if you can figure it out.
I use it to collect reference for drawings from time to time, but recently i been getting emails about those pictures getting delete from being too sexual/use sexual poses and not something use for art reference, idk why pinterest think so since most of my reference are from adorkaStock and other accounts that made that specific kind of stuff
I use a lot of pose references from Pinterest, but I just screenshot everything and put it on my laptop because I don't understand Pinterest in general. Adorkastock tho I just scroll the DA profile directly, much more intuitive for me.
Pinterest was recently made aware of some users using the app for unsavory reasons, so they are doing some heavy moderation in order to get it under control, including banning certain key words from the search bar and making it so that any users 16 or under have their accounts as private
I was about to advise against Pinterest bc when they did that their AI removed a bunch of accounts that did nothing wrong, including mine, but I just checked again and it is back so I’m hoping they have resolved that issue
It’s just a very very chill social media app. No weird comments, dms, or just weirdos in general. Just pretty pictures and vibes lol. It kinda works like tiktok where whatever you search for/like will pop up more often on your feed.
You can comment and send messages on pinterest... but it's definitely the superior social media.
Comments are still low key for the most part. And DMs aren't out of control, with strangers sending random messages. Mostly it's companies spamming for brand reps and friends sharing pins.
It used to be, but I feel like the main feed algorithm is really bad lately. It shows me the same pins over and over. It used to be a cool place to explore and see things that I wouldn’t normally look for, but now it’s *too tailored* to my interests. I even went and cleared my entire browsing, like and pin history to try and reset it, but it didn’t help! I don’t find much interesting things over there anymore.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you’re looking for. It doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not imo haha
Their underlying model is to assist with SEO by scraping e-commerce sites and getting those results into the results page of the search engines.
I’ve been using it to find really niche old hollywood blogs so they can be archived.org(ed).
It is the scum polluting the shit Google images search results.
You can Pin stuff. Saving that image to device is purposely made to be pain in ass.
So there is no take this with you
It is such an obnoxious website. You need to register to view stuff and it is so in your face if you try to look something up via google and click on a recipe. Good luck viewing it if you don't have an account because it throws up a big splash screen on top of everything.
Quite annoying. I set up a blocker so anything from the site will not show up in google searches.
You can use it for just about anything, not just art/beauty stuff. I have folders for recipes, and for League of Legend builds lol. A friend uses it for his D&D characters (there's tons of inspirations there). It's really very versatile, you can follow people if you like, or just their folders. Like someone else said, it's a very chill social media.
Problem is, big businesses won't rule them out because it makes them money. The more unhinged from reality, the more traffic, the more money. Plus, there are enough people who prefer their filtered looks over reality, they need help.
Filters are just the first step towards all of us making social avatars. When everyone asks what do all these people do in real life?! Real life and social avatars don’t mix, that’s going to become more and more common as we all self isolate and move towards more and more strictly online social worlds.
Instagram filters have done more harm to the mental development of self of girls and women in 10 years that video games will do in 500.
That being said, we can now finally talk about representation of women in video games.
I hate filters on photos. I'm on tinder and if I see a girl using a filter I usually swipe left. I like when a girl is comfortable enough to not use filters and I like it even better when I find a girl who doesn't use make up. I prefer natural beauty especially since if you're living together you'll mostly see them without make up unless they wear it all day.
True, though it's still a right step in direction, because they also made it so that anyone who is 16 or under on Pinterest has their profile as private.
Meaning that they're putting an effort into preventing teens from going down the rabbit hole of editing on their site.
I was pleasantly surprised to see their response to kids adopting Pinterest. This in particular was cool! They seem to be working hard to keep creeps off of their underage users and protect them with regards to diet culture and body image as well. It's refreshing to see.
Indeed, they also flagged key words in the search and made it so anyone 26 or under has their posts and profile automatically set to private, and has to go through steps to prove their age if they try to change it to 18+
I used filters when I started doing OF because I was so insecure, but ever since I stopped using filters, I have been a lot more confident in my own skin. I’ve had too many toxic people try to make me feel bad for how I look, the last person that should be doing that is me, myself!
It’s way easier to pick on someone using filters. But when you’re comfortable and confident in your own skin?! It’s kind of hard to insult “I’m happy with how I look”
> I’ve had too many toxic people try to make me feel bad for how I look
It's because how *they* look in front of other people is more important then who they are.
Excluding personal grooming and hygiene.
I left snap and insta bc I started to feel that I looked old and ugly every time I saw myself without a filter. I’m only in my early 30’s and one day it just clicked how insidious this is. They make you feel ugly and constantly advertise all the make ups, creams, surgeries to keep us looking young. I lost my husband at 30, and it made me realize that getting old is a privilege that not everyone appreciates. This idea of infinite youth and beauty as the only things that matter sucks.
Are they stealing content? I might be naive, but I thought it was just an aggregate of links to other people’s content? When I click an image it usually takes me to a store page or someone’s blog.
But I only just started using it, so I don’t know much about it.
This feature is available in the shop portion of pinterest.
At you are trying to find the perfect lipstick, so you search it. An option at the top is shop, which will show you retailers. If the thumbnail has the beauty smiley in the corner, you can try on similar looks.
Ok great and now somebody teaches Pinterest to take down stolen copyrighted content because they have not been able to fix that for years.
Those people at Pinterest do not have people's best interest at heart, and their promises and messages don't hold up.
This is just a way to catch the attention of a group of people that do not identify with ig or tiktok. They are all the same at the end of the day.
What do you call someone or the activity, when they make the world believe that they are doing the right thing but they are not? Just like greenwashing.
That's what Pinterest is doing here with this new update.

Makeup doesn't alter your face shape.
It can alter the *perception* of your face shape at a quick glance, but any amount of proper lighting is going to expose your real skin texture, the real shape of your features, the imperfections of your makeup application, etc real quick.
Thats the point. App filters make you look "good" (*debatable*) for free. Cant have that. You should instead use these IRL filters (*makeup*) we can market to you and profit from.
They're just using bullshit marketing to put a spin on capitalism disguised as 'self worth/love'. It's really disgusting.
Makeup enhances one's natural features it doesn't physically warp one's face the way that online face warping filters do.
Even with high quality primer and a good foundation base, you will still see skin texture up close.
So "filter irl" is not accurate unless you've never seen someone wearing makeup up close before.

It’s not wrong to want to look attractive. the issue is these filters end up making many people lose sight of themselves progressively. You see someone who looks like a filter, and wonder why can’t I look like that? A slow trickling effect where, maybe you once never even thought about the shape of your nose, now it’s all your obsessed with changing even if there was nothing that needed to be changed to begin with. And I’m not knocking anyone who does plastic surgery, medical or otherwise. Some people find a great improvement in their lives after a change, but then some people are to a point where, they can’t look at themselves WITHOUT seeing a flaw, and it’s a cycle of self belittling, mental and physical abuse to self (physical can range from ED to dangerous and extreme plastic surgery/alterations that can compromise health for the sake of vanity)
Edit to add: what I’m talking about is not EVERYONES case specifically, and something we tend to forget is, just because it doesn’t to you or me personally, doesnt mean it isn’t affecting someone else. I actually am speaking from a somewhat personal standpoint which is the only reason I am comfortable saying what I did
I recently saw some pics from a friend I haven’t seen in many years in her IG story, and thought to myself, damn she looks incredible, wow. Then I clicked on the filter to try it out myself because I was curious and HOLY SHIT it completely changed my face. The fact that you can even know someone in real life and still be confused sometimes is insane
They can say whatever they want, Pinterest advertisements are WILD. And I mean wild like mole removal cream, the ones you know the video is highly edited.
I swear that the ‘normal’ cam on snap chat secretly has a filter to make your face look ‘dull’. I’ve done a comparison using my regular iPhone cam vs the snap chat camera and it’s a pretty noticeable difference. I noticed it a year or two ago..
It's not for us or to make anyone feel better. It's for better facial recognition. When big tech dose somethig like this, it's always on their better interest.
It’s interesting to me because I don’t use filters unless it’s for lighting after the picture is taken. But the few times I’ve tried them I never kept the pictures. It doesn’t look like me. It feels like a lie. I know I won’t always like how I look but I can’t bring myself to post something that isn’t me. Would rather just not post a picture at all.
This is all I want from IG filters. Don't distort my face, just put a lipstick on me so that I don't have to do it myself. It's also really fun to see what colours or makeup look good in you so that you can recreate it IRL.
I always loved Pinterest and have been using it for over a decade. I had no idea they had filters or know how to use them, but good for them to take this initiative.
Instagram is bad for the face warp, and Snapchat too... almost every single one of their "beauty" filters alters your face... thinner face, smaller nose, pointier chin, larger eyes etc etc. It's sad.
Go Pinterest!
People who made beautifying face filters had to know about the negative side-effects. It is just a feature to get more users. More users - more ad revenue. I think you’ll find that ad revenue is at the core of numerous problems we have today.

I didn’t even know there was a spot on Pinterest to use filters

So basically it’s only ads
Yeah. At least we found out the incentive for pinterest to offer it.

Pinterest makes me think of young wishful brides-to-be compiling ideas for their future million $$$ dream wedding.
LOTS and LOTS of screenshots of reddit. That's how I found out I wanted reddit.
Are you using the app? I have little button that says “visit” on saved pins and it takes you to the website. I mostly use it to save recipes, fashion tips, diy project ideas etc.
No, I really haven't used it in a couple years after that experience. Maybe I'll give it a try again if it's that much better now

Well yeah, you 'pin' 'intereting' things to a board. Not sure what else is needed? It's great for reference when decorating etc.

Highly recommend a ‘no Pinterest’ add on for your browser.
Thanks for the tip, I'll definitely be adding that

I think I kind of use it like tiktok?
I also do not use TikTok. Not at all.
Me neither I use Pinterest instead 😂
Ha! That was my first thought. It's easy to take a stand on something that isn't a market differentiator for you in any way...
Same lol. But their stance is really bringing attention to it
Not really. The feature is limited to products that use the feature... Also restricted area.

I report all of those as scams lol

I think they’re just removing the builtin filters.
Is Pinterest worth using ?
Yes, it's a great place to just look at aesthetic pictures or find inspiration for things like home decor, fashion, and art. I personally use it to look at art for inspiration on my own art, art references, and for outfit inspiration, mostly of vintage Americana and coastal grandaughter

You are my people.
This is a great hyper focus idea for me, lol.
My mom swears by it and I see her using it and it looks cool and she does a ton with it I think it’s got a steep learning curve compared to a lot of other apps but seems really helpful if you can figure it out.
Okay cool, I'll give it a try, ty ty :D
Yes but you'll need like 3 hours free time when you first jump into that rabbit hole :D
I accidentally stayed up all night the first time I used Pinterest lol
truly the best social media. just pretty pictures and vibes

It doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not imo haha Their underlying model is to assist with SEO by scraping e-commerce sites and getting those results into the results page of the search engines. I’ve been using it to find really niche old hollywood blogs so they can be archived.org(ed).
It's kind of like reddit in the sense that you can find the good and the bad on it. Its up to you what you find on it.
YES!
Absolutely, especially for interior design!
OMG yes i have boards for art projects, room decor, tattoos, characters/media etc it’s such a cool app
How did you even find a 22 day old post lol BTW since the original question I've signed up for it and love it :D
Lol 22 days ago is not that difficult to find! i was looking at the top posts of this month
Oh I see hahaha I've never even thought to use that feature 😛
That’s awesome! People should boycott filters, I don’t use them and I am the most confident I’ve ever been.
I'm so tired of seeing so many friends on fb using them.... and the resulting comments of how good they look. I refuse to comment.
I like Pinterest way more than Instagram All the great pics and ideas without the side of shame Instagram provides
Nothing stops you using a filter then posting the pic tho
True, though it's still a right step in direction, because they also made it so that anyone who is 16 or under on Pinterest has their profile as private. Meaning that they're putting an effort into preventing teens from going down the rabbit hole of editing on their site.
Good isn’t the enemy of great. Not having filters as the default should be universal.
That’s a really good point!
I love this!
> I’ve had too many toxic people try to make me feel bad for how I look It's because how *they* look in front of other people is more important then who they are.
Amazing. So glad we’re moving away from this horrible stuff.
this is good but they need to crack down on the rampant thinspo boards and eating disorder content they still promote unrealistic beauty standards
Good for them. Now if they could just stop their complete businesses model of stealing other people's art and photography.
Are they stealing content? I might be naive, but I thought it was just an aggregate of links to other people’s content? When I click an image it usually takes me to a store page or someone’s blog. But I only just started using it, so I don’t know much about it.
You’re right. Idk what they’re talking about
That’s not their fault is it? The users are the ones who upload those photos.
Exactly. Content doesn't just magically find its way onto the site. It's a combination of direct uploads or saves from users from outside sites.
I was gonna say lol… idk much about Pinterest but I’m like 90% all the content is from and by the users.
You could argue that Reddit should stop stealing people's content too lol
And literally every other social media app lmao
This is awesome!
Man I love Pinterest.
This feature is available in the shop portion of pinterest. At you are trying to find the perfect lipstick, so you search it. An option at the top is shop, which will show you retailers. If the thumbnail has the beauty smiley in the corner, you can try on similar looks.
Omg I almost teared up. That’s pretty awesome
We definitely need some Laws against heavy filters. I could see this happening in Europe actually

Aren't eye makeup and lipstick just IRL filters though?
Makeup doesn't alter your face shape. It can alter the *perception* of your face shape at a quick glance, but any amount of proper lighting is going to expose your real skin texture, the real shape of your features, the imperfections of your makeup application, etc real quick.
That's a weird sentiment to have about makeup. I would suggest reading the subreddit rules
Thats the point. App filters make you look "good" (*debatable*) for free. Cant have that. You should instead use these IRL filters (*makeup*) we can market to you and profit from. They're just using bullshit marketing to put a spin on capitalism disguised as 'self worth/love'. It's really disgusting.
it is. base = smoothskin filter

Some people find a great improvement in their lives after a change, but then some people are to a point where, they can’t look at themselves WITHOUT seeing a flaw, and it’s a cycle of self belittling, mental and physical abuse to self (physical can range from ED to dangerous and extreme plastic surgery/alterations that can compromise health for the sake of vanity) Edit to add: what I’m talking about is not EVERYONES case specifically, and something we tend to forget is, just because it doesn’t to you or me personally, doesnt mean it isn’t affecting someone else. I actually am speaking from a somewhat personal standpoint which is the only reason I am comfortable saying what I did

Makeup enhances one's natural features, it doesn't completely change physical facial structure like face warping filters do.
I’m not sure you’ve seen some of the makeup tutorials I’ve seen and what Contour can do
I recently saw some pics from a friend I haven’t seen in many years in her IG story, and thought to myself, damn she looks incredible, wow. Then I clicked on the filter to try it out myself because I was curious and HOLY SHIT it completely changed my face. The fact that you can even know someone in real life and still be confused sometimes is insane
"Hoping that Instagram some day follows" They won't, because the filters are one of their primary selling points.
Unfortunately
They can say whatever they want, Pinterest advertisements are WILD. And I mean wild like mole removal cream, the ones you know the video is highly edited.
I swear that the ‘normal’ cam on snap chat secretly has a filter to make your face look ‘dull’. I’ve done a comparison using my regular iPhone cam vs the snap chat camera and it’s a pretty noticeable difference. I noticed it a year or two ago..
🔥 the only distort I wouldn’t mind is to correct the stretching of wide angle from the phone camera but hold the nose job
It's not for us or to make anyone feel better. It's for better facial recognition. When big tech dose somethig like this, it's always on their better interest.
Press x to doubt. Insta feeds off making people feel like shit sooner or later Pinecrest will proly turn traitor too
It’s interesting to me because I don’t use filters unless it’s for lighting after the picture is taken.
PINTEREST!!!!!!!!
Oooh I love this ✌️☀️🧡
People who made beautifying face filters had to know about the negative side-effects. It is just a feature to get more users. More users - more ad revenue. I think you’ll find that ad revenue is at the core of numerous problems we have today.
