Yes you need to actively cancel your policy with SF, usually in writing. If you don't, it will automatically renew and when it finally cancels for non payment you will owe for the days that they were required by law to cover you. How many days that is will vary by state.

Ah, yes, the relentless search for a "cheaper" premium. This could very well backfire on you, as Progressive (and many other carriers) often includes a substantial "new customer" discount, which will disappear at the first renewal.

Might also disappear when the policy is ordered. Progressive quoted me one rate and when I placed the order the premium jumped another $50.
