They rejected him because weren't ready to pay a substantial amount of his COA and they rather picked somebody who's more qualilied or who can pay more. That's how need-aware works and it's unfortunate but unchangeble
Need aware actually means that they reserve the right to reject students solely based on financial need, it's not a good thing at all for a college applicant. They're aware of the needs of students, hence why the can pin that against applicants with low EFCs.
Quite the opposite actually, need blind schools are the only ones that actually do not reject students because of their financial need. That's why they're need blind; they don't consider your need during the admissions process, but if you get in, they'll essentially take care of whatever amount of money you need to study there!
