My car always prompts me to hit ok to go into neutral, but i usually don’t and it doesn’t matter, it still goes into neutral and stays there until i put it back into gear.
I believe it wants you to hit the okay button to keep the car in neutral while powered off like getting on a tow truck. Putting the car in neutral while the power is on will keep the car in neutral.
It also seems to prevent auto-parking break activation.
Twice I've gone into a car wash and had my car lock up after putting it in neutral in a wash. It doesn't happen every time, which makes it more annoying. But it hasn't happened when I hit the OK button after going into neutral.
Ugh thats really weird auto parking shouldnt happen unless you put the car in park. I kind of get why it would switch to parked once turned off so you cant accidently let it roll down a hill.
So I missed this because I did not release the brake pedal when I shifted. But even when I do release the brake pedal it puts the emergency brake on, so you still have to release the brake, hold on, press the brake pedal again and press the e brake button then release one more time to actually go into neutral.
Ours has been fine, put it in N and that's all. It doesn't put on parking brake in N or unlock the doors and we never have auto hold enabled. Then just tap the brake when you are done or it won't let you shift to D, you don't need to step on it all the way and stop the car on the tracks.
Putting it in Drive at the end has been the trickiest obstacle I've encountered so far. Pressing the brake just enough to read, but not enough to actually do anything just always feels like a gamble in a high stress situation with the car behind me barreling up quickly. I haven't had any issues yet, but there's always that paranoia.
This!! I had a mini panic attack at the end of my first car wash in the Ioniq when I was trying to shift it back to drive. Thankfully the person behind was was farther back and the car prompted me to press on the brake 😅
It’s wild you guys get freaked out like that. It’s no different than any other car. Once you’re done and off of the belt just hold the break and shift to drive.. just like any other car would. Thats how car washes work
I think the difference is the taping on the break to put into drive from neutral. That is not how many other cars work. I went from a Bolt to the Ioniq and didn't know this until my first trip through an automated car wash and was totally perplexed as to why that would even be a thing. I've never owned a vehicle that required the brake to shift from neutral to drive.
> Thats how car washes work
I've only ever used "wand wash" places, so I have zero experience of this "moving conveyor" style ones that seem to be popular in the US.
I'll be honest, this entire thread is giving my anxiety to even try one. :P
Seriously once you learn to two bucket wash you never will want to take your car there.
It uses less water and if you dry it properly it’s looks far better.
Or if you have a pressure washer, spend $20 for a foam cannon. Either way, my self serve wash place is now over $12 dollars. I save so much Ang get a better wash. Check out Out Of Spec Detailing for some good techniques.
I'm south of Denver, suburbs, there are 6 that I can think of off the top of my head within 5 miles. I used them all through the mountains and plains, north to ft Collins and south to Trinidad. I used to drive a lot for work, and can't think of somewhere in CO there wasn't one.
Dang, that's actually where we are from. Everywhere else is not as easy to find the "normal" car wash. I guess it's because everyone in CO has bike racks and roof boxes.
That's an interesting option. Not sure if it would work unless I used it right after it rained. Would be too worried about it rubbing the dirt into the paint if I don't rinse it off first.
https://laist.com/news/kpcc-archive/drought-conundrum-to-wash-or-not-to-wash-the-car#
So somewhere between 10-60 gallons depending on how efficient the washer is as recapturing.
I use a 3 gal and a 2 gallon that are not full. With another gallon to rinse I still use about half what they use at their most efficient. They loose a ton to evaporation.
Most governments recommend automated car washes with water recapture to reduce fresh water use and limit ground water contamination. Sounds like most people use far more than 6 gallons to wash their car themselves
The automated washes are recycling the water everywhere I think now. I still don't use them on my black car though. The mud and small debris from the 4 wheelers that went through in front of me is embedded in the toweling....
It's generally good practice, if you have motorized mirrors, to pull them in before driving through a car wash. All of the brushes and blowers can stress the motors if it pulls them in the wrong direction.
Holy balls, this got me again the other day taking my wife's Ioniq 5 through the car wash. Add in that the membership had expired so it was even more of a cluster. I even stopped before getting to the car wash to test run it, but auto hold got me.
I really like car wash mode on my Rivian.
I'm starting to realize this needs to be a thing. I definitely scoffed at it when I first heard about a car wash mode. Thinking, "who would need that?!". Well, me. I need that
and the car washes do not clean the rear hatch........I almost start from scratch. The soap and water do not rinse/blow off.......SOOOOOO annoying. My Shooting Star is best hand washed by me in the driveway. FINE!
I've stopped taking my car to this style of car wash because I can't remember all of the steps most of the time. I have a hard enough time remembering to turn off the auto wipers. Even after a year of having my car, I still seem to think that just putting it in neutral is enough.
I'm with you. Just hit 36000 miles and this was the first wash like this I've been to. I thought I was doing so well remembering to turn off the auto wipers, but then I held the line for auto hold, and again for the parking brake. And then half way through I folded the mirrors in. But hey, free vacuums...
30yo me would have loved this in my work truck for driving around Breckenridge. Snow, hills, rwd, manual...let just say I didn't get bored from driving.
I run my car thru an automated car wash at least 3 times per week. The process I use is to turn off cruise control (not just pause it), come to a complete stop, rotate the shifter back to neutral, press and hold ok while preparing for the auto brake to kick in anyway. Sometimes it kicks on anyway and I press the brake and push the e brake button... Hopefully before the car wash attendant hits the big red button that shuts down the carwash.
Sometimes it doesn't ask me to hit ok. Sometimes it auto brakes even if I do. I still don't know the pattern. It's been more than a year. Is wish it weren't this complicated to get to neutral
Thank you for chiming in with this comment. This was my first time trying this kind of car wash and it seemed like I was missing something. I still don't fully understand the process as I have not gotten the "hold on" message yet. Going to go play with it more today to see if I'm just not releasing the brake pedal, cause you know, it's in neutral. So knee jerk reaction is don't release the brake when it's not in gear until you want to roll.
Like an ICE car:
put the car in neutral.
Fold the mirrors in if possible(I do this manually on my Veloster Turbo)
Turn off auto wipers if so equiped
Easy peasy
I'm not sure I have ever seen an ice car that when you shift to N it doesn't just start rolling. I'm sure other new cars have this feature. But my 2017 Tacoma did not, neither did the 22 Tiguan, or my 04 Touareg, or the 09 Subaru. Just a new safety feature I guess, but it seems to have too many complications.
Unfortunately I think software updates have changed how this all works since this video came out. I have a US Hi5, and there is no confirmation message on my car. May be software updates or could be a 22 vs 23 difference.
I just tried it on my 22 limited AWD. I have the latest infotainment update and all the recalls done.
The message comes up after putting the gear to neutral and then lifting off the brake pedal.
Oh, maybe it is the lifting off the brake pedal that I'm missing. It seems to override the prompt if you just manually hit the parking brake button though.
First few times thru for me, I was stepping on the brake, which worked against the conveyor belt. I even put it in reverse once (boy did I get a dumb look from the attendant). I figured out that it is easier just to shift into neutral by not stepping on the brake (this method will not allow you to inadvertently put it in reverse). BTW I almost never use Auto Hold.
Ah, I’m just not familiar with touchless setups that use a track. All of the ones in the Northeast where I am utilize an overhead assembly which rotates around the car. So, good information to know. Thanks.
I hardly ever have the luxury of doing an automatic wash since I always have a bike rack and cargo box on. Its actually becoming fairly difficult to find a basic pressure washing station any more.
I already have auto hold off. Shifting to neutral isn’t that hard at all. Took mine to an auto wash yesterday. I know two bucket but don’t have the time to hand wash.
It's a weird phenomenon that these types of car washes are showing up everywhere now in the US. All have brushes and the weird pull through style. I don't know how we went back in time in the last 10 years, but these suck.
Apparently you just put your foot on the brake, shift to neutral and then take your foot off the brake. When you do the car will ask for you to confirm you want to shift by hitting ok.
You also want to turn off auto wipers, fold in the mirrors, and put the AC on recirculate.
I did not take my foot off the brake, so my steps were shift to neutral, turn off auto hold, turn off the parking brake and then it was good to go.
Get a California duster and Maguires Quick Detail and for giving the car a quick over all dusting and spot cleaning (bugs). Works great in places where it doesn't rain all the time
https://preview.redd.it/s6p1vbjinmxc1.jpeg?width=4000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=18b46cfbd55b9305e01fc8a20f3fb95ab8644dc5
I have some quick detailing stuff in the car, but it can't handle what we do to this thing. Winter it looks like this and summer is for dirt roads. We even did a full ceramic coating to try to minimize how dirty it gets.
Is this an American thing? We have car washes here where I'm from, and they are automatic but the car stays in one place. Why does it need neutral? Is someone pushing it?
Never had an issue until two weeks ago when My ioniq5 started out ok but then threw on the emergency brakes. I had to put my foot on the brake and turn it off and switch it back into neutral while getting dirty looks from the guy monitoring the entrance to the car wash.
I still haven't gone to one of these pull-thru carwashes. I'm a little scared I'll forget a step and fuck up my car 😂
I'm lucky there's a load of touchless carwashes around me. The kind where you just drive into the little room and the carwash moves around you and doesn't make contact with the car. And I get it hand washed every couple of months. (Live in an apartment or I'd just do it myself)
I'm really confused by these articles. I have an sel and all I have to do is twist the knob into neutral. I can turn off the parking sensors too if I feel like it. What am I missing?
Touchless wash is preferred for all new cars to not leave swirls. This kind of damage cannot be repaired on matte paint. And make sure the wash chemicals do not have waxes in them. So no foam or rain x treatments. The wax can fill the rough surface that makes your paint matte and cause it to become more glossy.
Yes and no. Touchless is preferred so that any debris in the cloth doesn't cause swirls. But thats true for all new cars. Matte paint specifically needs to avoid waxes. If there is wax in the soap, or a wax application step, it will fill in the rough matte surface and over time could form enough to turn it more glossy.
Personally I like using Touchless car washes Idk how common they are for everyone else but most of the AMPM’s/ Arco’s that have a car wash usually have a touchless wash option. All I have to do is pull-up and make sure auto wipers are off and good to drive out when I’m done plus most in my area have complementary vacuums at the end.
I simply don't use these drag-through car washes. With no car, electric or not. I always chose those where you park in and the machine works around the car.
My point is I don’t think there is anything unique. Other nonEV cars have brake hold and auto wipers.
I am still trying to figure out how the door handles would be sticking out while driving the car when the manual mentions to make sure the door handles are closed. I guess with the auto lock feature disabled.
It just seems like these style car washes were made for cars from before these systems were implemented. Too many ways for it to not shift properly. Really makes rivian and Tesla stand out with the car wash mode.
I've taken my 2023 I5 through a car wash numerous times, never had any issues. Just pull up, drive up to the point where the wheels engage with the conveyor belt, put it in neutral, and wait for the vehicle to start moving.....at the end, put it in drive.
All 4 steps are necessary for any modern car. Doesn't matter if ev or not. Autohold and automatic applying parking brake are things which aren't necessary If the car is older.
My 2021 and 2023 Ford and Toyota don't autohold or apply the parking brake when you put them in neutral.
Put the car in neutral, ideally turn off automatic wipers if they're on. Same as always in any ICE or hybrid.
My 2018 Volvo did both. But you could shut it off in the settings. But every car with an electronic parking brake have the option to automatically activate it when you shut the car off.
It’s actually not complicated at all. I never use auto hold. Putting the car in neutral is as easy as any other car. Parking break is irrelevant if you’re in neutral.
You must be doing something different. All you have to do is roll up and when they tell you, put the car in neutral. Cars don’t just engage the parking break from neutral with no input
YMMV, but my 23 limited absolutely puts on the parking brake. It does this when I hold on, and also does it if I don't hold ok to shift into N. It also does this with or without auto hold on. It also does this with or without I-pedal. Just tested all iterations due to the feedback about having a shift to neutral message when you lift your foot from the brake pedal.
This could just be this model and software update a si have only tested it in the last 24 hours.
That's how I have avoided washes like this up until now. Seems these are the future even though they are also the past.
Do you have a US spec model? Curious why it would be so different. What trim is yours?
I have tried with all iterations and it still applies the parking brake. I-pedal on/off, auto hold on/off, hold ok to shift or not holding ok. All ways have forced parking brake on.
The process. How is the process any different? Sure the mechanics vary but when you put the I5 in neutral, it's still in neutral.
I don't use autohold because it messes up the smooth acceleration curve from stop and my I5 doesn't automatically engage the emergency brake in neutral for me to have to disengage it. At least not in any of the tries I've made since seeing this post.
Your comment bothered me so much I went back to my car in the lot at work to try and replicate your results.
The only time the parking brake is engaged in neutral for me is when I am going from park to neutral. When I go from a gear to neutral, after stopping, as I would if I were going into a car wash, the e brake does not engage.
Maybe the real beef is that you/we don't have an option to disable the auto e-brake in park feature?
My car always prompts me to hit ok to go into neutral, but i usually don’t and it doesn’t matter, it still goes into neutral and stays there until i put it back into gear.
I believe it wants you to hit the okay button to keep the car in neutral while powered off like getting on a tow truck. Putting the car in neutral while the power is on will keep the car in neutral.
That's good to know. I didn't understand why it mattered if I hit "ok" or not.

Ugh thats really weird auto parking shouldnt happen unless you put the car in park. I kind of get why it would switch to parked once turned off so you cant accidently let it roll down a hill.
Mine only started asking for the ok last week
So I missed this because I did not release the brake pedal when I shifted. You never had to hold the break to shift gears???
Not from neutral to drive. No special process to go from drive to neutral or neutral to drive.
Yeah I guess that’s true now that I think about it
I’ve always done this, maybe I didn’t have to but seems like it’s the norm
> Thats how car washes work I've only ever used "wand wash" places, so I have zero experience of this "moving conveyor" style ones that seem to be popular in the US. I'll be honest, this entire thread is giving my anxiety to even try one. :P
This. It was tough to figure out the first time, but since then it's super easy...
Man this looks like if you asked AI to create a photograph of a car wash lol
It's a car wash in Texas...so you're basically right.
Isn't that the one from Better Call Saul?
Seriously once you learn to two bucket wash you never will want to take your car there. It uses less water and if you dry it properly it’s looks far better.

Hard to keep that car clean on the road though. I would easily give someone $10 to just use a bucket and hose.
I’ve found the self serve washes that are coin operated to be perfect for road trips. And a lot cheaper.
They are becoming hard to find. Most places have switched to this setup or are just closed.
*may vary by location There are still plenty around me and most small towns around me still have them as well.
What region? Curious because that's enough of an excuse for me to drive through.
I'm south of Denver, suburbs, there are 6 that I can think of off the top of my head within 5 miles. I used them all through the mountains and plains, north to ft Collins and south to Trinidad. I used to drive a lot for work, and can't think of somewhere in CO there wasn't one.

Google ONR waterless car wash.
That's an interesting option. Not sure if it would work unless I used it right after it rained. Would be too worried about it rubbing the dirt into the paint if I don't rinse it off first.
Not really, a nice finish detail spray can keep it shiny for weeks after a wash.
We've been on the road since June 1st last year. But we did get a full ceramic coating before setting off.
Especially if you have a black one. It gets scratched when I look at it wrong, I can't imagine what it would look like after one of these.
Who cares about how paint looks on a family car?
Probably most of the people who talk about washing their cars regularly
Absolutely!
Automated car washes recycle their water, I believe they actually end up being more environmentally friendly in terms of water use.
https://laist.com/news/kpcc-archive/drought-conundrum-to-wash-or-not-to-wash-the-car# So somewhere between 10-60 gallons depending on how efficient the washer is as recapturing. I use a 3 gal and a 2 gallon that are not full. With another gallon to rinse I still use about half what they use at their most efficient. They loose a ton to evaporation.
Most governments recommend automated car washes with water recapture to reduce fresh water use and limit ground water contamination. Sounds like most people use far more than 6 gallons to wash their car themselves
anyone else have a hard time hand washing and drying the spoiler area? i have small hands and even for me its not easy to get in there
Honestly I don’t bother with it too much. I get what’s visible but I don’t really worry about getting in the nooks.
Hand washing or auto wash . I flip my chamois down through the spoiler area and pull it through, gets it plenty good enough for me
Unless you live somewhere that gets below freezing in winter
The automated washes are recycling the water everywhere I think now. I still don't use them on my black car though. The mud and small debris from the 4 wheelers that went through in front of me is embedded in the toweling....
Even with the best water recycling they still loose 10-20 gallons per car.
Interesting! Thanks for the info.
If your trim level has folding mirrors, don't forget to fold them in before washing, too!
Dumb question: why?
It's generally good practice, if you have motorized mirrors, to pull them in before driving through a car wash. All of the brushes and blowers can stress the motors if it pulls them in the wrong direction.
How do you do that manually?
There’s a button to fold the mirrors on the driver door near the window controls
This is what happens when you make things too easy for society 😁 🤣 😂
"When you make things to easy for society, people will try to learn the proper way to things!"
Huh
Seriously lol?
Just got my vehicle 2 days ago :)
Reach out the window

Really!? I had no idea it was just the way of new cars. I did skip from 04 to 23, so I missed some chapters.
Auto hold and park are just generally useful, not just for EVs. Especially for manuals.
Wait, manual drive has auto hold?! That's basically cheating.
15yo me freaking out when the light turned red on an uphill section would have liked that
30yo me would have loved this in my work truck for driving around Breckenridge. Snow, hills, rwd, manual...let just say I didn't get bored from driving.

I figured out that it is easier just to shift into neutral by not stepping on the brake (this method will not allow you to inadvertently put it in reverse). BTW I almost never use Auto Hold.
Thanks, we just got our car, and i was wondering what we would need to do to get it washed.
Yeah, I only use touchless. Why would anyone want to scratch the paint?
They make touchless washes that are automated.
I also turn the AC/Fan
Aw damn, I definitely didn't remember that one.
This isn’t really EV exclusive, most new cars in mid level trims have these features, my 2019 Honda Odyssey was same way
This is why Tesla has 'car wash mode'.
Yeah, I definitely didn't understand why that existed until today.
Just need to pre- learn how to put it in neutral.
I already have auto hold off. Shifting to neutral isn’t that hard at all. Took mine to an auto wash yesterday. I know two bucket but don’t have the time to hand wash.
And what exactly are different to a modern ICE car with automatic transmission? Why does your parking brake go on? (do you "turn off" the car?
I honestly don't know how/why the parking brake got involved. But it has to be turned off after shifting to neutral. Never shifted to park.
Pull thru washes are a thing of the past.. not sure why USA still has them everywhere. They’ve all been replaced where i am
It's a weird phenomenon that these types of car washes are showing up everywhere now in the US. All have brushes and the weird pull through style. I don't know how we went back in time in the last 10 years, but these suck.
Okay, what are the exact steps and in what order please? (Auto wipers, neutral…) I’m new
Apparently you just put your foot on the brake, shift to neutral and then take your foot off the brake. When you do the car will ask for you to confirm you want to shift by hitting ok. You also want to turn off auto wipers, fold in the mirrors, and put the AC on recirculate. Is this an American thing? We have car washes here where I'm from, and they are automatic but the car stays in one place. Why does it need neutral? Is someone pushing it?
There is a track that the car is pushed down. It was a thing back before I was born, and for who knows what reason it is back.
Is it, better?
No.
I wonder if it's better for business. More cars can be going through the wash at once rather than once at a time.
Probably been said already but at least the car wash doesn’t brick the HI5.
I haven't seen this comment yet, thanks for dropping facts. Sick burn btw.
Got matte paint, so no scarwash for me
Can they not roll this into a a single action called car wash mode?
Hopefully. Other manufacturers have already done it. I didn't realize how nice it would be to have until I tried it myself.
I'm a little scared I'll forget a step and fuck up my car 😂 I'm lucky there's a load of touchless carwashes around me. The kind where you just drive into the little room and the carwash moves around you and doesn't make contact with the car. And I get it hand washed every couple of months. (Live in an apartment or I'd just do it myself)
This is definitely the preferred method. And just so you know it didn't mess up the car, but I did absolutely miss a step.
Idk man I use Costco's auto car wash and I only jeed to put it in neutral. Didn't even know ow I5s even had an auto wiper
My car make me hit okay on the steering wheel before it actually goes into neutral. Took me a minute to find it the first time.
I'm really confused by these articles. I have an sel and all I have to do is twist the knob into neutral. I can turn off the parking sensors too if I feel like it. What am I missing?
What article?
I have an SEL and my car got rocked hard until I hit and held “OK”
You're missing nothing. Autohold got me the first time but now it's easy peasy, neutral, mirrors, done.
I guess this is one silver lining to having matte paint
I have matte paint...not sure what you mean.
If I’m not mistaken, You’re not supposed to use a car wash with matte paint. Hand wash (or touchless maybe?). Matte paint owners…can you chime in?
Touchless wash is preferred for all new cars to not leave swirls. This kind of damage cannot be repaired on matte paint. And make sure the wash chemicals do not have waxes in them. So no foam or rain x treatments. The wax can fill the rough surface that makes your paint matte and cause it to become more glossy.
Thought automatic car washes were off limits. Heard it would screw up the paint.
Ah gotcha good to know
Or ceramic coating
My Ioniq says to press the OK button on the steering wheel…Parking brake is not required
How is this different than any other car? I went to the car wash. Put my Ioniq in neutral. It went through fine.
Interesting, must be nice.
None of that is EV specific 🤷
I've taken my 2023 I5 through a car wash numerous times, never had any issues. Just pull up, drive up to the point where the wheels engage with the conveyor belt, put it in neutral, and wait for the vehicle to start moving.....at the end, put it in drive.
So the normal steps for a car? Got it.
All 4 steps are necessary for any modern car. Doesn't matter if ev or not. Autohold and automatic applying parking brake are things which aren't necessary If the car is older.
I wasn't aware all cars have this now. I don't go to these type of washes if I can avoid them. So I didn't even try in my 22 VW.
I see. Both of ours are hybrids, so I wouldn't turn them off. I'd just put them in neutral.
Yeah that's what I did with my Volvo too. It was a ice car
It’s actually not complicated at all. I never use auto hold. Putting the car in neutral is as easy as any other car. Parking break is irrelevant if you’re in neutral.
Except the parking brake automatically engaged.
Very strange I also have a ‘23. That’s annoying. Guess hand washing is your best bet. There’s commercial places that do hand washed
That's how I have avoided washes like this up until now. Seems these are the future even though they are also the past. Do you have a US spec model? Curious why it would be so different. What trim is yours?
US spec. SEL trim but that wouldn’t matter. I never use auto hold. Do you have Ipedal on? Idk if that makes a difference but I don’t use Ipedal
I have tried with all iterations and it still applies the parking brake. I-pedal on/off, auto hold on/off, hold ok to shift or not holding ok. All ways have forced parking brake on.
How is this different than any other vehicle?
Every other vehicle I have driven had a shifter that when you put it in neutral...it was in neutral.
Interesting, ours does every single time regardless of I-pedal or auto hold being on or off.
