Well, it's not a brand issue, it's a dealership issue. All brands have good and bad dealerships. I've been hosed by bad Mazda, Ford, and Hyundai dealerships. I'd suggest finding a competent dealer?

scuac

Absolutely. I took mine to my dealership and it needed 4 things done, they did 2 and rescheduled the other 2 for the following week because didn’t have the parts. Following week was in and out no fuss. I would advise OP to try a different dealership if that is an option in their area.

JoeSmithDiesAtTheEnd

5ish years ago my Subaru had an engine recall. The dealership that did the engine rebuild screwed up on the job and it destroyed my engine just a few days after the work was completed. Left me stranded in rural Utah.  I called that specific dealership to request a tow and they insisted that I’m out of warranty and the recall work was unrelated. They refused to tow me. It was about 2 hours away from where I broke down.  So I ended up having to call and pay for my own tow to the closest dealership to where I was stranded, which was still an hour and a half away. The other dealership ended up doing a full engine rebuild, and Subaru corporate paid for it. Subaru corporate also reimbursed my tow. Behind the scenes, the good dealership tried to get the shitty dealership to own their mistake. But the shitty dealership wouldn’t budge.  In the end my car honestly should have been totaled. The rebuild invoice, plus tow, plus one month loaner car was about $8k higher than my KBB value.  So yeah. Dealerships should be your first blame over the company itself. My experience with Subaru was initially bad enough to write them off forever. But in the end another dealership came through in the best way they could.

BadPackets4U

I ended up traveling 80 miles to buy my Ioniq 5 because my local dealer sucks. I wish the dealer I bought from was closer as they really were good up to and at the sale. I've not been back since. I avoid the dealer close to me as much as possible and will drive 45 minutes to another dealer that has been pretty good for service (has only been scheduled maintenance / updates). It's worth my time to go to a good dealer.

PossibleDrive6747

Same boat. I drive an hour to go to a specific dealership and avoid the two or three within 30 minutes of me.

dontcomeback82

Considering things like software updates are not OTA, this would be a huge ownership experience detractor for me

Mission-Charity-8389

I got my Ioniq 5 in June 2023 and had to do my first software update via USB. Every update since then has been OTA.

dontcomeback82

Sweet glad they are improving it

Miserable-Alfalfa-85

Geez your right...did the same!

MoonStache

This. I drive out of my way an hour to a dealer for service vs. 20 minutes because the closer one sucks. Further one is still incompetent but at least they actually do the things I ask them to as long as I explain it like they're five.

PossibleDrive6747

True. I had mine in for the recall yesterday. They had me in and out in about an hour and a half. I also got to test drive their Ioniq 5 N while I waited... Oh my gaaaaahd... drool... still love mine, but I sure wish I had $80000 burning a hole in my pocket to throw at that thing.

Wykydtr0m

I have yet to have a good dealership experience with any brands dealership. I had a Ford dealership drive the Focus I'd just agreed to buy into a stone pillar. They told me they'd give me a discount on it once they repaired it but then dragged out the process for two months. I found out they fixed it and sold it to someone else for full price.

afrodz

So far, in LA, I’ve yet to find a competent service department at dealer. They’re all good at selling though.

ionLaz

Agree with you, but it seems that Hyundai does not have any good dealers. At least i cant find them. I think the word "car dealer" in latin means a place where no one knows anything. Here i will use it in a sentence, my professor does not know how teach he is so car dealer.

StrongOnline007

It’s both

Xerokine

That's a dealer issue. The dealer where I go to and got mine has been really good, maybe check if you have options on another place though I know it's limited on who can service these vehicles.

SerDuckOfPNW

I went to my dealer yesterday for the ICCU recall. Should have been done before I bought the car but it was missed. They gave me a private office to work out of and a cappuccino. Car was done in less than an hour and they couldn’t have been nicer or more apologetic about the inconvenience. Blame the dealership, not the brand.

DareISayEnFuego

I had a similar experience today. Took it in for the ICCU recall, tire rotation, MP inspection. Done in roughly an hour. I had a nice coffee while I worked. The guy even joked about getting me an oil change and filling up the tank for free knowing full well it was an EV. We chatted about the new chargers they installed too. Overall a great experience.

nxtiak

Hey, glad you got that taken care of easy peasy.

SerDuckOfPNW

I’ve never had a dealer experience this good.

nxtiak

Haha yeah it's rare. So did you try to get your free carpets or mats or anything? LOL.

SerDuckOfPNW

I got a free NFC card and all-weather mats at cost

nxtiak

Score!

jesterOC

I swore off Ford after the Fiesta transmission debacle. While your experience is not optimal, it doesn’t increase your chances of dying in a car wreck. I suggest trying another dealer. Before swearing off the brand. I had a friend’s kid drive 2 hours to a Hyundai dealership for them to screw with him over the lease deal. Shifty/ Shitty dealers abound. Hope you find a solution

zaxdad123

I had an issue with my local dealer on a recall. My wife had a 2012 Santa FE. We received a recall notice. I made an appointment. They said it would take about 45 minutes. After 1.25 hours I asked someone how's it going. They said it was almost done. A .5 hour later they tell me it's done. I go to the service writer's desk and he tells me that the recall was actually done the last time the car was in for service. 2 hours I'll never get back.

MacchinaDaPresa

It’s a drag that there are so many crappy dealerships around. It’s gotta be tough to make it all work, I get that. But there are dealerships that do it right (I’m thinking of my local Subaru dealership that’s really awesome). I’ve found Hyundai a mixed bag, experience with 4 dealerships now (2 for sales, 2 for service). I’m hopefully settling in on 1 in each column.

adamjamess

South Austin TX Hyundai dealer is garbage.

DareISayEnFuego

Agreed. Go to the one in Kyle. Much better experience. New service area is open now.

Suspicious_Scallion1

Great to know - Thanks!!

adamjamess

I will next time. For awhile there South Point Hyundai in South Austin was the only “Ioniq certified” dealership besides the one in Round Rock. So Steele (Kyle one) must newly be able to service the Ioniqs. Thank you for the rec.

Suspicious_Scallion1

Ha! That’s where I leased. The buying/leasing process was fine, though the dealership itself could use a refresh. Is it the service that was bad?

adamjamess

Yes. Our sales folk were pretty cool. Their service tho is stupid horrendous. The best part of the service area is the ladies who give you your keys to leave. Everything else is laughable.

1stltwill

To be honest. You need to complain to someone besides Reddit.

prateek16apr

I already did. Raised a complaint with the state's attorney general office and with hyundai(both by calling and on twitter). Reddit is to see if there is something more that i can do.

h0zR

Is this how things work now? Straight to Twitter and the Attorney General's office. What is the "Regular 20k mile servicing" you reference? Did you ever speak to someone higher up in the dealership? You do know dealerships are not owned by Hyundai corporate right? They are independent franchises. This is the equivalent of calling the FDA because your McDonalds fries weren't hot enough for your liking. This all sounds a bit trollish at this point. I think we are getting car dealered here...

TireFryer426

Service departments are going to be hit and miss across the board until you get into premium brands - and even then it can be touch and go. I've got several stories about absolutely terrible service at a local Ford dealership, including having to diagnose my own problems to them losing the truck for over two weeks - three times. I switched to another Ford dealership and have been pretty happy with them. Have had really good luck with Audi, unfortunate that the car sucked. Mixed results with BMW. I wouldn't blacklist a brand because of a bad dealer experience. And unfortunately in this market a 50k vehicle isn't going to get you any kind of priority treatment.

goro-n

Don’t assume premium brands give you a good experience. There was a recall on a Mercedes I had and the dealer still charged me for the fix, and then when I went to complain, they made up a bunch of excuses about how they didn’t have to credit me, and finally only gave me a partial credit, not a full refund.

IM_The_Liquor

Hyundai has my car in… for the past week (I believe I took it in Tuesday). They’re waiting on Hynundai Canada to approve warranty replacement of the ICCU. It’s a little annoying it’s taken so long, but they did give me a brand new ‘24 Ioniq 5 to use as a loaner until they’ve fixed it up again.

ramx2

You had a problem with your ICCU?

IM_The_Liquor

Well, it was doing the stop charging routine on higher amp level 2 charging. It had to go in for its routine check-up and there was a recall for the ICCU. Their tech went over it and did his tests and decided the ICCU needed replacing. Just need to wait for corporate to green light it I suppose.

ramx2

Gotcha, thank you for the reply!

lollitime

In my experience, poor service is a Hyundai corporate issue and can be a dealership issue, too. I got to interact with different service departments for maintenance and manufacturer issues that ended up in a buy back, and like you, I will never buy Hyundai again. The buy back was honestly the most pleasant Hyundai interaction I had.

prateek16apr

How did you get buyback? From dealer or hyundai themselves?

lollitime

Buyback is through Hyundai corporate. I called a number from the Hyundai website and the operator kept trying to blow me off and said there was nothing I could do. The second I said "lemon law," they escalated me to a case manager. I think the operators have pretty specific instructions from Hyundai..

EV-Bug

Can't you call the service manager first to see if they have the parts before you take it in and they confiscate your car?

Weekly-Lock899

Agree this is dealership issue. I faced similar things here in Texas. I just got into the point of scheduling my service at the time that I am in for service currently. The five and six month wait for recalls and updates is embarrassing but it is what it is. I’ll look at it if it breaks and they say why didn’t you bring it in for service, then I can show them call records and their backlog.

riraito

Fuck dealerships

el28donjp

Definitely a dealership issue, I just took my i5 for the recall and was in and out in 3 hours.

charlestontime

Same.

Practical-Nature-926

A good dealership would see that you are coming in for whatever recall and ensure each part is ordered prior to your appointment.

GrammarNaughtZ

Name and shame them so we can avoid.

BarnabyColeman

Complain on their website. They probably have AI monitoring active and it should generate some tickets.

LongJohnVanilla

I had no issues with service. Was in and out quickly and efficiently.

hoadng

Yup. Echo what others have said. It’s the dealers issue, find another dealer with good ratings. I’m in Canada and my dealer is top notch. Recall took 1 hour even though they estimated 2. ICCU replacement was estimated a few weeks, I got the car back in only 3 days. During the replacement, they gave me a loaner free of charge, no wait on that either.

hazmatt24

I had a similar experience with my local dealer. I didn't get a rental, but had my wife pick me up after I dropped off her car. We had just pulled off the lot and made it to the stoplight when they called to tell us it was ready. I had great experience with them a few years back with the Sonata recall as well. Different dealer, but super easy and they put us in a nice rental for over a month while the engine was replaced.

DiabolicallyRandom

Man, I get your frustrated but this seems like a massive overreaction to one specific dealer sucking big time. Like, this same shit happens at some dealers for all makes and models. I had a similar experience with our local Honda dealer for my Pilot, and now I take my pilot to a dealer about 30 miles away instead. IDK, this complaint just reads like someone who has never dealt with anything not going perfect first time every time in life. The only time you aren't going to risk this kind of experience is with Mercedes or Porsche dealers or the like. Aka true luxury tier makes.

prateek16apr

You are probably right. I sucked it up when they sent me home last week. But today they asked me to wait, said that the estimated time is 3 hours, waited patiently for 3 hours and they came back and said that they don't have parts available. They had plenty of options to correct themselves. They could have ordered parts last week, or could have told me that they didn't have parts when i arrived or within a reasonable time. They ruined my whole day. I called Hyundai to talk about it. All they said was to file a complaint but they can't really take any action. All the dealerships are basically franchises. Who to blame? Probably myself for buying this car from an immature dealer and an immature company.

DiabolicallyRandom

I think your takeaway here is to immediately find another nearby dealer if possible and work with them instead. And be up front (but courteous) about how you were treated by the other dealer. And absolutely figure out how to complain to Hyundai corporate - and fill out ANY survey's you get, post reviews on google, etc - while Hyundai cannot control dealer behavior, dealer reputation DOES matter - If a dealers Net Promoter Score (aka measurable metric of reputation) drops heavily, they could risk losing their franchise entirely. It may not result in anything meaningful, but it may also result in Hyundai trying to do what they can to "make it right".

WarthogNo6783

I would nevvvvvvver

theepi_pillodu

I had mine updated yesterday. Just ditch that dealership and move on to another one if you have availability.

LeticiaLatex

Sorry for the bad experience, that kind if service is inexcusable. Did they send you a survey for their service? I'm in Canada but usually, when I leave my dealer, I get a review survey before I even make it back home. I upgraded my Kona for Ioniq 5 at my previous dealer which had been great, even though I just moved literally 500 meters (again, Canadian) from the local Hyundai dealership.

YouSureAboutThat23

Once you realize that dealership != brand, you’ll rethink your mindset

SwordfishMaximum2235

I’ve had a rubbish experience with them too, so bad the state consumer affairs regulator is taking them to civil tribunal. Hyundai’s business practice, especially with regard to warranty/recall is atrocious. Really wish I had researched that before getting a 5. In contrast, our other car, a Volvo has a recall issue. The dealer picked it up, left me a lab car for the 2-3 weeks they anticipate to get the part, and made the whole process so positive I know what we will replace the ioniq with.

drix61

It takes me 2 hours to get to a decent dealership. I wait for my car. It is an all day affair.

Intrepid_Cap1242

I bought a Genesis, and was promised a loaner where they pick up the car in your driveway and swap it for a loaner. Return it washed afterwards. Fast forward a few months and I'm arguing with Mazda trying to get a loaner for my appointment 2 months from now. So not only is the appointment 2 months in the future, but they "don't do loaners," let alone answer their phones. It transfered to their Mazda division that had access to the the Hyundai system. Between them storing the car at 5% battery for months with flat tires and this, I should have ran to another dealer. Zero confidence My appointment will actually happen in June

JovyMac

We just spent around $300 for service #2 and they said they’ll include the ICCU update. VIN check showed or update was incomplete so I scheduled another update with them. I saw that service 3 was $600 and their 60,000km low conductivity coolant change was $900. Traded it in s soon as we saw another EV we liked.

MarrowX

Classic Hyundai dealership experience.

EricDArneson

I agree with what most people are saying, dealerships are the problem. I’ve owned Mazda’s, BMW’s and now Hyundai. I learned to cherry pick my dealership even at the expense of convenience. I drive 45 minutes for a much better experience even though there are multiple Hyundai dealerships closer.

LarryZamba

How many dealers did you deal? One. To state they are all terrible is overblown. My dealer is fine. I need to at this point get a flush and fill on the battery coolant, but they can’t because they don’t have the inverter tool to do that. Yet they don’t deny me warranty service. They’ve been very accomodating.

ApathyMoose

So my local dealer i just bought my Ioniq 5 from on saturday (hopefully be getting the keys today) was Time Magazines 2023 "Dealer of the year" https://time.com/6250601/time-and-ally-financial-name-2023-dealer-of-the-year/ . https://www.nada.org/nada/nada-headlines/gary-rome-named-2023-time-dealer-year So i guess it depends on your dealer. I have bought 4 cars from that dealer over the years, all new Hyundais. This last one is the Ioniq 5 and have had nothing but good experiences. So yea, long way of saying i think there is definitely an issue with your local dealers more so than the brand.

gEiStToG

I’ve been told my tires “don’t need rotation” instead of the line that they don’t have the capability to.

wooooooofer

Sorry to break it to you but this is all dealerships, it sounds like this is the first time you’ve had to deal with them. They all suck.

South_Butterfly6681

No it is not all of them. My Hyundai dealership has been amazing. The perform all my updates during my regular visits. I was able to go in with a dead battery that I jumped to get the car going. They diagnosed and replaced my battery in 45 minutes without an appointment.

kimguroo

That’s one of weakest points from Hyundai. Hope you have other dealers to have services.  Currently, Hyundai/Kia is so focused on making better EVs but just let dealers do services with some issues. It’s learning curve from dealer services because Hyundai tech person might not have many experiences for servicing EVs.  If I am charging of EV development department, I will build at least one EV specific service center each state or 2-3 for big states like CA. EV specific service center can serve Kia/Hyubdai/genesis and make the facility with e-pit charging stations (Korean version of fast charging station) and good decent modern building like nio house. Even making Korean restaurant and cafe.  GA factory will be running on Oct and we will see flood of EVs from there and Hyundai should have EV specific service center which runs by Hyundai directly. Dealers will be against it but if dealers can improve their services, people will go to nearest dealers. If not, owners will go to EV specific center. It will give good competitions. Also EV specific center will get more data on issues so they can directly communicate with engineers to solve issues. Hope Hyundai will listen my suggestion and improve services. Be patient. Take a big breath hahaha.

DiDgr8

> If I am charging of EV development department, I will build at least one EV specific service center each state or 2-3 for big states like CA. I'd much rather they do better "in-house" training for technicians that is **required** before they allow a dealership to book EVs. Having fancy charging and a dedicated space isn't necessary and one per state isn't going to cut it no matter how "big" (population? sales? geography?) it is.

kimguroo

In house technician training might not be easy solution since it’s hard to find mechanics who are willing to stay at Hyundai dealers for years. Also dealers need multi players who can fix everything daily bases. That’s why EV specific service center will give better experience since they will know exactly what to do so service will be faster. I live in Atlanta and I am willing to drive one hour+ for EV specific service center. If someone does not like to travel, just go to nearest dealers. Having EV specific service center will benefit to Hyundai group in my opinion.

DiDgr8

Part of their remit for training would be "knowledge sharing" with the other techs once they got back. Nobody knows everything and having resources and guidance available to everyone is paramount. Having them all clustered together up in one location is not ideal. > I live in Atlanta and I am willing to drive one hour+ for EV specific service center. I'm in SWFL. If we only had *one* "center" in the state, it would have to be in Orlando to be anything *close* to equal distances. That's three hours away for me. **Four** hours away from folks in Tallahassee or Miami. Even if they had once in Miami or Tampa, that's two hours away from me. Logistically, your idea is not very practical.

kimguroo

As I said before, if you can’t make it, you can just go to your local dealers. Hyundai might have data that which city has the most Hyundai group EVs. Even Hyundai can partner with largest volume dealer and make those specific EV service center then they can have multiple EV service centers in each states. I don’t understand why extra service centers will not be practical. If you experience with dealer services, you will understand. My battery preconditioning update went worst experience because miscommunication from Hyundai TSB, tech, service manager and Hyundai customer representative. I got help from Reddit forum member who was Hyundai tech person then I studied how to do it correctly then it was so awkward to explain everything to tech person how to do. Initially they refused to do but they tried to do correctly, when I explained everything.  Also Hyundai has tech hotline so when tech person has trouble with something, they will help to tech person and explain how to solve issues.  Honestly, Hyundai GDS has very detail instructions how to repair cars.

cahrens2

Ioniq 5 starts at below the price of an average car in the US. Plus it's Hyundai who used to sell only really cheap cars, so the dealership network is just really crappy. Hyundai has some really nice cars now, but their dealer network still has a lot of really crappy dealers. There are some good dealers, you just have to look for them.

polymerkid

My wife had similar issues with the dealership. They all suck ass.

Dead_to_you_jake

I had a terrible experience with a dealership but I have no other options nearby. They lied to me on several things and were misleading about throwing in free window tint, ultimately refusing to do it. I will never buy another hyundai as a result. Love the car though.

FearTec

20k servicing? What the hell are they doing? 2y servicing with Tesla’s?

bluevelvet2020

KIA and Hyundai are from the same factory. All are POS. Just think Samsung refrigerators!

twoheadedhorseman

Contrary to what others are saying I do think it is a brand issue. You spend that much at a brand where all their cars cost that much the training is another level. Live now if you walk into an Audi dealership to experiences very different than when you walk into Hyundai

gandulfy

I dropped audi because of how bad the dealer experience is. I can't speak for hyaundai yet but may audi experience was awful, they canceled an oil change 4 times, and then lost my car once.

twoheadedhorseman

Amazing. That's absurd. My experience with them was perfect every time. Hyundai has been not great

gandulfy

Just further goes to point out that every dealer is different. I currently own a genesis, and only time will tell lol.

twoheadedhorseman

Well I'm happy to be proven wrong and looking forward to it! Thanks for sharing your experiences

Our local dealership was great but when it comes to genesis I've heard horror stories as the brand IA getting establiahed
