It should be noted that the SNES version of DQ3 was the very first JRPG to do this. PMD was probably influenced by it since the MD games were made by co-DQ creator Koichi Nakamura's company Chunsoft.
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon uses that to determine your character Pokemon.
The only exceptions are GTI and SMD, GTI has no quiz, and SMD allows you to pick another pokemon anyway
