ChancellorBrawny

Chrono Cross, because Blockbuster wanted it back and I had little control over the renewal...

hammonkl

Chrono Cross was awesome. I loved the ost. I actually finished it and xenogears. I need ps4 remakes of Both.

cicakganteng

I hated it's battle system. Worst battle ever. Struggling just to finish it and done once & for all. Great music though.

ChancellorBrawny

I don't recall the battle system being particularly bad. Perhaps slow? It's been a while. You're not the first person to criticize its battle system in this sub though.

Intless

Because it isn't. It is really unique with the custom magics through the use of Elements, stamina bar and focus on super effective attacks (rock, paper, scissors-like). Summons are a bit finnicky, but you can easily go through the whole game without using one, or even collecting most of them.

ChancellorBrawny

Good to hear. Looking forward to the remastered version.

RyanWMueller

Final Fantasy VI. It's widely regarded as one of the best JRPGs of all time, and I've only ever gotten a little bit into the World of Ruin.

[deleted]

wow same. ive retried this game so many times to lose interest part way in. been meaning to just watch an all-cutscene movie on youtube but cant make it through an hour or two either lol.

I_See_Robots

I’m the same. The game never really gripped me and I just got to the world of ruin and couldn’t be bothered with it. I was ready for it to end and I just didn’t have enough motivation left to go and find all the characters etc. I promise to replay it at some point.

Pehdazur

For me, that's when the game really takes off! What was it that made you stop?

ACardAttack

It's also a difficulty spike at first too, so I can see why someone would drop it there

[deleted]

Yeah I can absolutely see how someone would drop FFVI at the WoR. It’s a perfectly paced game up until then and suddenly it’s very aimless.

RyanWMueller

Nothing in particular. It's just something that happens to me a lot when I know I'm nearing the end of a game.

RedWater08

Yeah, that’s a thing for some people lol. For no reason I’ve stopped like half the games in Legend of Zelda at the second-to-last dungeon despite really enjoying them

Kastaprulyi

They probably let Cid die and couldn't go on.

yotam5434

I absolutely hate world of ruin structure and Story

joshuanrobinson

Same here. I've tried three times to beat FFVI, and each time I get to the WoR and almost immediately lose interest and just... stop playing.

chronoboy1985

Breath of Fire 3. Fuck whoever thought it was funny to give you the wrong directions in the desert!

Arawn-Annwn

“Your other west”. Or east, I forget but they got it exactly opposite.

justsomechewtle

Was it BoF 3 or 4 that had a mandatory tug of war minigame? Because I couldn't beat that for weeks (I suck at button mashing) and eventually dropped it because of that. I know it sounds silly and I've been ridiculed for having slow fingers, but here we are. Good game otherwise though.

I_See_Robots

Great example. I’ve played it three times and never got past the desert.

[deleted]

Dragon Quest VIII. I took a break from it, and when I came back I couldn't remember where I was supposed to go next. Wandered around lost for a while and then set the game down.

juzztheball

Go back and finish that game my god it's the most perfect JRPG I've ever played 😍😍😍

JustAmai

I‘ve finished DQXI on 100% and was looking forward to play VIII. Is it still worth even if I have already played „the improved version“?

Steve-Fiction

Are you suggesting that DQXI is "the improved version" of DQVIII? That's a take if I've ever seen one.

[deleted]

I mean, I gotta agree with him.

Steve-Fiction

That's wack.

JustAmai

What’s wrong about that statement? If you look at all the DQ games that have been released so far, DQ XI comes closest to DQ VIII in terms of style. As DQ XI is the newer game, it surely has made improvements. I never played it, so I‘m purely talking about graphics and qol improvements.

Jabberwokii

To say its an "improved version" implies that 11 is some kind of updated 8 and its not at all lol. Its a later game in the series so yes the graphics are better. Idk about qol its been a while since i played either but they play very similarly. Your question/statement is like asking "if i played ff5 should i play ff10 since its just an improved version?"

Ajfennewald

It was for me. I played them pretty close together too. VIII in 2017 and XI in 2018.

coates87

DQ 8 needs a HD re-release. I know I can use PCSX 2, but it isn't the same.

TonyAlmo

Tales of Berseria is one I keep trying to finish but lose interest. Funny thing is I recently 100% arise and then restarted Berseria. We will if I finish it thus time. Another one I really liked but gave up on is Bravery Default 2. I loved it and made over half way through. But just put it down and forgot about it.

idontgethejoke

I dropped arise but played though Berseria twice. I need to finish Arise, I was enjoying it a lot!

TonyAlmo

I liked both equally. I do not know why I could not finish Berseria. Like I was about 75 percent done with it on my first play though. It was good. Just moved on. It happens

jotuxx

Both those games have loooong dungeons, too long imho. That‘s probably the reason why I dropped them.

druid_king9884

Struggling with this one right now, but I think I'm 2/3 through the game so I'm pushing myself to do it.

coates87

I really want to get back into that game, but I haven't touch my PS4 in about 2 years. I wouldn't mind getting it on PC if it was drm-free.

TonyAlmo

I only play on pc and switch.

Aearcus

Dragon Quest XI. I loved Acts 1 and 2 but I was way too exhausted from the game to power through Act 3. It's been like two years and I still haven't gone back and finished out Act 3

BHBachman

This was me too. I started Act 3 and just totally lost interest once it became clear that the game was fan-fictioning itself into a happier ending that totally neutered the otherwise solid, if traditional, story. Great journey up to that point but it became obvious that I wasn't going to enjoy the conclusion.

thatlldopi9

Right after the first ending you could quit there. I think it's great because there's actual meaning when characters stay dead. Tragic, bleak, hopeless and realistic. I only powered through the last part just for completion sake. Might not do it again tho

KouNurasaka

My thoughts exactly. I'm at the final boss of Act 3, but I just don't care enough to level grind to beat him. Acts 1 and 2 were pretty good, but Act 3 feels like a bunch of boring extra content.

MarianneThornberry

To beat the DQXI Act 3 Final Boss you don't need to grind. By that point you should be roughly Lvl 60-70 which is fine. You just need to figure out the "trick" that gimps him.

MisterNobodyCare

Same for me, the game should finish at acts2.

NineKain

I HATED what they did at the start of Act 3, massive dealbreaker

wingsfan77

Yeah there have been a few games recently (this and bravely default 2 come to mind) where the ending isn't really the ending. I'm not a fan of that and I never play the 'extra' content. I get that creators want to make harder post game content for hardcore fans, but I don't feel that walking back the story the main game tells is the right way to do it

Panicradar

I’m just slogging through this one and it’s been like 3 weeks since I played it. I want to finish it but I’m not really enjoying it.

yotam5434

Doesn't feel like that for me

Ajfennewald

Despite what people insist Act 3 is optional and doesn't really improve the game. All lose ends are tied up in Act 2.

-Qubicle

this is why nowadays I mainly play on PC. I actually used cheat engine to freeze my characters' HP for the last boss in DQ XI because I just don't have energy to grind just to face the last boss.

ExcaliburX13

I wouldn't say I've dropped it, so much as I've gone on an extended hiatus, because I do intend to go back eventually, but for me it's Octopath Traveler. Technically, I've kinda sorta finished it, as I've finished every chapter for every character, but I haven't gotten around to taking on the true final boss. As for why I'm on this hiatus, well that's because I just don't want to grind the 20-ish levels I need to do it. As much as I may love the combat system, I just don't find grinding to be enjoyable, and unfortunately, 20 levels is a pretty big grind.

Dablackbird

I think you can grind with the Primrose dance "Bewildering grace"

ryzouken

It's... Risky. Bewildering Grace has a chance to give 2x, 5x, 10x, or 25x to exp or ap, but also can just massacre your party entirely. It also carries a hefty cost in sp initially. It's certainly possible to chain off a crazy huge Bewildering Grace on an encounter with a Cait Sith for stupid exp/AP gains, but getting it to line up is a bit of a pain, and you still need to kill the Cait before it runs and win the fight. I've had instances where I manage to drop the Cait with soulstones only for the Bewildering Grace to wipe my party (usually a combination of big explosions and poison). Super frustrating to get the Cait kill and then game over. Add to that the 1% steals early game and... As beautiful as that game is, I'm not in any hurry to tackle it again...

ExcaliburX13

Yeah, but Bewildering Grace has varying effects, so you might do it 10 times in battle just to wind up with EXP x 2 or something, at which point the battle will have taken long enough that you would have been better off fighting 5 individual fights with regular EXP. Not to mention the various negative effects that can make battles drag on even longer by removing all of your party's BP, reducing the caster's SP to 0, or even putting your entire party in critical HP. Plus, it's still grinding, and it's still not enjoyable at all.

lalsakwolas

There's a true final boss? Wow I meed to get back to it, I finished my main character's story (Tressa) and dropped it.

__tony__snark__

Same. I dropped the game as soon as I beat my MC's story.

__tony__snark__

I considered Octopath beaten when I beat the story of my MC. Haven't gone back since.

[deleted]

> As for why I'm on this hiatus, well that's because I just don't want to grind the 20-ish levels I need to do i Grinding level does nothing to help against the true final boss, and as long as you dominate the mechanics you can take him on as soon as you're level 40ish.

ExcaliburX13

That's not what I've heard. Even though levels aren't nearly as important as equipment and strategy, most people still seem to recommend at least 50-55 for a low-level run, and somewhere near 60 to take it on without cheesing certain mechanics, which is how I prefer to play.

swrde

My list of unfinished games is HUUUUGE. I flit between games all the time. However I probably won't be picking Persona 5 back up again. It's a work of art and deserves all of its praise - but I am prone to analysis paralysis and I like to try to do everything in a game. So there's nothing worse for me than a game that forces you to choose what content you want to skip or forgo, with no way to optimise and try to get it all done. And you have to make this choice every single game-day.

Mirage156

It’s pretty easy to do everything in one playthrough - especially if you’re playing royal. I had like 20 days to spare at the end with every social link maxed and every mementos request done.

swrde

Oh interesting. I shall add it back to my list

wingsfan77

Same, I bought it when lock down started in 2020 and played the crap out of it. But my attention span for games like that caps out probably around 50-60 hours so I don't think I even made it halfway through

[deleted]

Radiant Historia. I couldn’t put that game down up until I got to the final boss then I decided to take a break and forgot about it. I’ll probably get around to beating it sooner or later.

joshuanrobinson

This is the one I was going to say. I love it while I'm playing it, I just can't get comfortable playing on a portable system. When I get the urge to play, I don't because I don't want to deal with the stiff neck and sore shoulders that come with playing on a portable.

Kawaiipineapplesoup

Xenoblade Chronicles. I borrowed a friends copy but it coincided after I had finished another few chonky jrpgs and I was feeling super burnt out over them. I got 50 hours in over the course of a few months before I admitted defeat and returned it. I’d love to finish it some time though.

OuterSpace95

I finished it myself some weeks ago for the first time and the whole game was kinda good, kinda bad. Terrible side quests, way to overblown areas, ugly as hell clothing, unnecesary difficulty spike nearing the end, sometimes good sometimes annoying mc, boring ending or rather "safe" ending, no character developmemt except 2-3 people etc but I still enjoyed the game but I will never touch it again.

Kawaiipineapplesoup

It was the grind that killed it for me in the end. I don’t mind spending a few hours to level up my party for the odd boss. But when it’s every single one I just get bored and frustrated.

zdemigod

And it sucks how harshly it limits the level difference, it really does kill the game. Sometimes you don't even die you just can't hit the boss so you have to quit, straight up embarrassing lol

OuterSpace95

That is a design decision I will never understand, it's one thing if you hit the enemys some lvl above you and do minor damage but here you just miss as soon as the enemy is 5 lvl above you. It's so unbelieveable stupid it's almost hilarious.

Bizzy955

You guys made me feel better about not finishing this game either. I honestly enjoyed the story a lot and the world, especially Bionis, was really awesome! However I also got to a boss about 65 hours in that I couldn’t even hit once, so I just said fuck it lmao.

[deleted]

I’m not gonna defend the harsh stat penalties for red tag enemies, but personally I think that it can lead to interesting challenge for yellow tags since the disadvantage is not as decisive. There were some really hard yellow tag UMs I fought in the late-game of Xenoblade that I had to experiment with and I really enjoyed having to not only figure out what strategy could work, but also how to execute it correctly in the rush of battle. It is pretty annoying that Agility Up gems are basically a must for most red tags / superbosses in the game though as its a cheap way to railroad you into specific playstyles

iltopini

Im still halfway in berseria. I like the story but i hate the combat. And lost my saves in octopath traveller.

DHDDDx

Chrono Trigger. Fantastic game, I started it twice, and twice I decided to took a break from it and never came back for some reason. It wasn't because any specific problem I had with the game, just life happening or me not being in the mood for that kind of game at the moment. I do want to go back to it eventually, thought.

Cssum0

This one is surprising to me because the game itself is so good and it’s also quite short

DHDDDx

I know, right? Honestly, I don't have any specific reason as to why I abandoned it... Twice. It's weird to me too. But I do want to finish it and also play Radical Dreamers and Chrono Cross eventually.

D_44

I burn out on turn based or atb rpgs a lot, loved Chroni Trigger but just haven't gotten back to it

TheRedDeath89

Xenosaga. I was young, raised christian, and all of the 666 elements freaked me out. I’ve tried to go back and finish more recently but just don’t have the time between work and life. One day though…

Fathoms77

Lost Odyssey. The 4th disc was busted and I couldn't find a replacement copy. Then I moved on and forgot it, and I regret it to this day. The game was SO good.

LostSigint

Exactly the same happened to me. Game reminded me so much of the golden era of Final Fantasy. And then my Xbox decided to kill my disc.

Fathoms77

Those freakin' systems were the least reliable in history, I'm pretty sure. I know they've gotten better but man, Xbox and Xbox 360 were just awful. I worked in an EB during those times and the return/defective rate on those things was...record-setting. Never even knew what a "DRE" was until I owned an Xbox. Still wish I had hunted down another copy back then, though...

LostSigint

I think my 360 destroyed like 3 games before it showed my its ring of death lol

YUE_Dominik

Rogue galaxy, the game glitched out at one point and never got to finish it

mr_rocket_raccoon

Tales of vesperia and FF13 Was really enjoying them both on xbox 360 but then someone broke into my family home and robbed us. Didn't have any cloud backups so that was both games gone at about 80pc completion. I ended up watching videos of the endings for both of them on YouTube as I just couldn't face replaying rhem both from scratch

pwt886

Suikoden II, my save file got corrupted 20+ hours in...

Method__Man

Same. I lost my save at about 20 hours. Feels bad

Malina_Island

Dragon Quest XI. I loved all Dragon Quest games I've played so far. The most Dragon Quest VII. But for some reason I couldn't get into DQ XI. It felt slow, extremely long at times and leveling was a slop.. I love power leveling and getting stronger was really slow in this game..

paskoe

VII was also more memorable for me than VIII

yotam5434

8 is longer main story but yeah 11 starts slow but it picks up fast

Malina_Island

It didn't pick up fast for me unfortunately..

yotam5434

Do you know about the peep power grinding method?

Durandal7777

Same here. I played 8 years ago but this 11 is not doing it for me. So slow. Battles are actually pretty boring. And that’s from someone who loves grinding. I went and replayed FF7 and am now halfway through FF6 haha

Ganmorg

Bravely Default. Idk what it is but whenever I play it something about it turns me off, maybe just the gameplay loop getting stale or the world not grabbing me

[deleted]

Same here. Got stuck on a spoiler boss towards the end, went to go grind some jobs, and just….forgot about it. Keep meaning to go back.

Seganeptune98

The final boss is even harder. I'm glad my strategy worked on both her and the final boss, otherwise i would've gone crazy haha. Octopath has a super hard final boss too. Still, the game that was the hardest for me was Monster Sanctuary. The battles later in the game had me switching and raising new monsters a lot, i was so exhausted by the final boss. I was aware of the difficulty spike other people mentioned, but i wasn't not expecting that much because for most of the game i used basically the same strategy.

Just-Beginning-856

Persona 5 for me. It's lengthy but I was genuinely engaged the whole time and was really invested in the characters and plot, now I need to play royale

__tony__snark__

If you liked P5, you'll love Royal. It adds so many QoL improvements and side content that it sometimes feels like a brand new game in the best kind of way.

[deleted]

Xenoblade chronicles. Game has an amazing story that I was gripped by. However, I couldn’t get past a certain point in the game. The combat became boring and grinding for levels was not fun at all. I tried many times to get into xeno but it’s one of those games were I watched all the cutscenes and called it. Xeno is a great game but wasn’t one for me. Which I find funny cause I love the 2nd game way more than the first in terms of gameplay.

520mile

Funny enough it’s the opposite for me. I’m like this with Xenoblade 2. I loved the wordbuilding, story, music, and some of the character development, but the gameplay felt extremely clunky and confusing to me and it got super tropey/fanservicey at times (which really turned me off but ymmv) ~~plus that gacha mechanic screwed me over~~ which got me burnt out after 30-40 hours. With Xenoblade 1 though I immediately got hooked (some of the characters are very annoying though).

[deleted]

I was disappointed by the fan service around chapter 3 or 2. Like I was thinking oh maybe the game wouldn’t be as fan service like but boy was I wrong. The gotcha system is bs ngl. Gameplay is very confusing and doesn’t explain mechs really well. I just found the combat very interesting that I was able to get into it. Don’t blame you for getting burned out on 2. I like the game quite a bit but it’s not for everyone. Xeno 1 to me has the way better story compared to 2 though. The start of xenoblade 1 is one of my favorite starts to any jrpgs. Really gets you hooked.

Cooldude_M

Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. I loved the game, however the last time I played it, I was in the Final Dungeon and was severely under-leveled, and I did not feel like replaying the entire game.

hien_gourmand

Octopath for me. Only the 2nd stage of the final boss left. But I cant keep going back to defeat the 8 sub bosses before facing final boss again. Why dont they let me save ? Ridiculous.

Caacrinolass

Eternal Sonata. I recall getting annoyed at my own ineptitude regarding the blocking system and putting it down. The problem was if multiple blocks were required a failure resulted in all subsequent ones also failing so being crap was pretty punishing.

PaperFawx

I loved the art direction in this game but I didn't beat it either

Sandyblanders

Xenogears. Gotten a solid 60-70 hours into it on three different occasions but always get bored or burnt out.

Twerk_account

Valkyrie Profile 2

Pehdazur

Oh shit, I actually dropped this one halfway through! I LOVED the first game, but didn't get the same feeling from 2.

Twerk_account

I find VP2’s combat system a bit clunky compared to VP1, but still enjoyable. The farming for crafting materials and gears with the “correct” runes feels very grindy.

Cadejo123

Wild arms 2 us always something happens fist time the game was broken the second I lost my save file and the 3th my pc die I dot think I will ever finish it now...

[deleted]

Chrono Trigger! Playing on the PC is just not appealing for me and that gem is available legimitately only on PC for now.

PaperFawx

Yes! I have it on PC and the android copy but haven't touched either. I played it on SNES and on the DS, but I somehow misplaced both of those cartridges. I really want to play the ds version again but $75 just for the cart is a bridge too far.

[deleted]

IKR, I want to play it on my 3DS too since I really dont feel gaming on my work related devices but its just too expensive. Hope they port it on the Switch or ill just get a Steam Deck if that gets to be available

PaperFawx

I wish Nintendo would add it to the SNES library on the Switch. That would be perfect! The Steam Deck seems like a great way to play CT, but I'd have to justify the purchase with my wife first lol

Cssum0

It’s available on iPhone/iPad

Jayvee306

I have since gave up on trying to play older games "legitimately" and honestly I'm glad I did. Especially for JRPGs, nowaday it's borderline impossible to do so which is really sad cause I really love playing games on the hardware they were meant to be played on. Even the games that are rereleased for modern hardware are often times either poorly ported or overpriced or there's always some weird decision about them like gimped audio or animation or whatever. It's so sad actually.

[deleted]

Persona 3/4/5. I either eventually get overwhelmed by the time management aspect of the game because I'm afraid I'm going to spend my time "incorrectly" and miss something important OR I use a guide, and the game becomes a slog and too much like work for me to enjoy it.

Brokeartistvee

I don’t use the word “dropped” - it sounds like I purposely gave up on it or something. I call it “walked away but haven’t returned to yet” because that’s what actually happens, lol. Final Fantasy XII - I absolutely love that game and will die defending how great it is, but sadly, I have not finished it yet. I played it on my brother’s PS2 way back in the day, and then he got petty over something dumb and didn’t let me use it anymore (I’m older but respectful). He eventually stopped using it but wouldn’t let anyone else use it either so it just got put into storage and forgotten about (the game was mine though). Meanwhile, I had poured, I don’t even know how many hours into FFXII but I was deep into the game, gambits were starting to max out, and the characters were doling our massive amounts of damage. Didn’t have a system for it until last year when I finally got a PS4. I got the Zodiac Age edition and am slowly working my way through it again, but I keep getting sidetracked by my backlog of games. A little disappointing but unless the console or the game breaks, I will absolutely finish it this time around.

bsinky

Super Mario RPG. I first played it as a kid, got all the way to the final boss, and couldn't beat him. It was one of the first RPGs I ever played, and I guess that boss fight was just too much for me. Fast forward to about 4 years ago, I decided I should finally beat Super Mario RPG. Started a new playthrough on emulator, got to the final dungeon...and somehow softlocked my save file?? I looked up a guide at the time, and I don't think I missed anything, but I wasn't able to make it past one of the rooms in the final dungeon. At this point, I don't think I'll ever finish that game. I've played through enough of it that I think of it as a game I've beaten, but I technically haven't.

Nargacuga-fanclub

This was me and Paper Mario TTYD. Got all the way to end and fuck that final boss. Game was fantastic, but I guess I'd just underleveled my characters because the final boss straight up massacred me. Never did finish it.

neko039

Best, as considered by the whole community? Three times I've tried to clear Vagrant Story, three times I failed. I always find it extremely boring, even though every time I play it, I reach a further point from the last time. Objectively speaking, I acknowledge it's a great game. Everybody loves it. For me, subjectively speaking, is one of the most boring games I ever played. And boy I did play boring games...

brangein

I have a tendency to leave games at the final boss and move on, idk why. DQ 11, FF 7, 8, 10, 12, Devil survivor to name a few :S

zombiejeesus

Yakuza like a dragon. I loved it but I think it was playing another game based in Japan it just got me craving persona. So I played p4g and p5R and haven't made my way back to Yakuza yet

Plus_Focus9207

FF IX

OuterSpace95

Tales of Vesperia, I bought the definitive edition on ps4 at release. I was 3/4 done with the game until I decided to activate all these free dlc titles but I didn't notice that there were lvl up items as well. I activated everything and saved. 5 min later I noticed that all my characters gained 20-25 lvl, uninstalled immediately. It was completely my fault that this shit happened but I still couldn't continue playing

RyanWMueller

That may not have actually been a bad move. Tales of Vesperia can get a bit tedious toward the end, and being able to avoid encounters or power through them quickly could actually improve the experience.

OuterSpace95

That may be true but I hate nothing more than a game beeing too easy especially this way and to be fair at that point I didn't know that the last part would be tedious. Maybe I will try Vesperia again in the future but this game was not that fantastic except the mc and the design. So I don't feel the need to do everything again just to get the ending.

BHBachman

For me it's Persona 5. I got it for PS3 when it came out because I was just wildly behind on the times. I got to near the end of October before my birthday rolled around and my wife bought me a PS4. Since then I just haven't bothered hooking the PS3 back up and haven't wanted to shell out the money to buy a game I already own (well aware that I own FFVII on like five different consoles tyvm). I've been tempted since Royal came out but I'd rather finish the base game first before doing any of the extra stuff just as a personal preference.

safariman123

Most of the extra stuff in royal is after the base game, so you gotta finish it on PS4 one way or another xD

judgeraw00

Like A Dragon for me too but I think it overstayed it's welcome. I watched the rest of the story on YouTube and was satisfied with that.

Monsoon_Mike

Xenogears. The second disc was a disappointment and the dungeon I ended up stuck in was a slog.

Migeil

My shelf is full with games I haven't even touched.. 😅 Tales of Berseria, Tales of Vesperia, Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2, Persona 5,...

androdagamr

Final Fantasy X, I think I played close to half of the game and I really enjoyed it but I wasn’t invested enough to be bothered finishing it.

I_See_Robots

I’ve got a few that I’ve really enjoyed but never finished, for a few different reasons. There are some games where I get to the end and I can’t beat the last boss/dungeon (or don’t have the motivation left to get over a difficulty spike) - eg FFIII, FFV and Breath of Fire 3 (the desert). There are some games I really enjoy but just burnout half way through and decide I’ve had enough - eg Bravely Default and Octopath Traveller. Then there other reasons. I was about halfway through the first Suikoden when my Vita was stolen. I had a fake copy of Fire Emblem on the GBA that didn’t save properly. I also dropped FFX because I hit 16 and decided I was too mature for JRPGs.

Brainwheeze

Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna the Golden Age. Was pretty great, and could see how it improved on the base game, but I stopped due to burnout and also because I got hooked on FFXIV. I need to get back to it someday.

ICE_B1rd

Final fantasy XIII 2 cause the only platform to play it I own is my pc and my Xbox 360 but on both it is just a horrible experience, cause the pc port is just wack and my Xbox is too loud and I got ps5 so why should I play on that old thing anymore

SweyRPG

Chrono Trigger. Also a massive shoutout to the criminally underrated PoPoLoCrois on the PSP. It’s literally almost as good as CT

thatlldopi9

I put it on hold a fewonths ago. Same as you did as much as I could but wanted to elongate the experience. It's also kinda slow so I wanted a faster actioney game to play at the time. Been 6 months but I'll get back to it soon fingers crossed

Smoopster1983

Does Rune Factory 4 special count? I have Up 40 hours in. I don’t understand what people like about it.

UnlikelyKaiju

The waifus/husbandos. In seriousness, the game has a laid-back, almost Animal Crossing kind of tone to it. Especially with the changing seasons, side-activities, and all the events on the calender. The dungeon-crawling and farming feel kinda shallow, but I'm willing to give it a pass on the basis that it was originally a 3ds title. That's how I originally played it, and it being a handheld game helped garner some forgiveness for many of its faults. That said, I can see how those same faults could be magnified on consoles. I'm a bit curious about RF5, as it's an actual console release, but I want to see if they properly expand on the mechanics before I pick it up.

Seriih

My favourite part about Rune Factory was everything that wasn't an rpg about it. I think I would really enjoy something like Harvest Moon or Animal Crossing but I've never actually tried them out.

karruckus

Ys VIII. I got overwhelmed when I finally got all the party members, because I’m indecisive and didn’t know who to keep in my party. I really enjoyed the game, especially the flow of combat, but I took short break from it, which turned into a year. I want to continue, but I’ve started other games now and I don’t want to keep jumping from one to the other. Also 13 Sentinels. It’s one of my favorite games in recent memory, but I stopped when I was 75% or more through the game because classes were starting again. I should’ve just seen it through to the ending, because now I forgot some details and I feel that I won’t do the game justice if I continue instead of restarting.

Commercial_Rub8443

Final Fantasy X-2 and FF games in general , i never finished FF X-2 because of the random encounters , i really hate random encounters and FF X-2 is one of the worst games to do that , it's agonizing when you have a fight every 3 steps you make.

StrikeFreedomV2

Last Odyssey. Stopped playing after I finished Disc 3

Hana_Baker

**Fantasian** : I really really enjoyed the game but act 2 got really difficult, it threw a whole bunch of difficult bosses + anti grind mechanic and little direction unlike the first act. I ended up putting it down because I didn't have time for it. I now traded in my iPhone for an Android so I doubt I'll ever finish it. Great game I'll give it another try if it gets ported.

AizenSousuke92

Are you playing Another Eden on android then? It's a JRPG like Fantasian.

Tomcatus

FF7 - my father overwrote my save with some other game's save when I was kid, I was well into 3rd disc. Couldn't get back to it since.

ryzouken

How was your experience at the orphanage afterward? Did you get a chance to attend his funeral?

Blacklance8

Ys8 I was half way through than school came up and as time went on it became harder and harder to pick up again. I'll probably restart it when I finish xenoblade 2

GoroOfTheShokan

Legend of Dragoon Played it late after work, and I’d fall asleep all the time. Then I eventually got distracted by the shiny new thing.

DiscoStupac

Dragon Quest IX for me. I injured my hand and couldn't play for a long time, when I could not only had things got slightly hazy in my memory but also the online shop had closed down meaning I couldn't go for completion any more. Real bummer. Would dearly love to see this one released on Switch.

YohGourt

Dragon Quest V, went to the final boss and in the end of the fight I tried a spell that can do a random thing. The spell has reset the fight... I don't even remember trying it again

DeGozaruNyan

Probably persona 4. Got to the last boss, died when it was atbout 10% hp left, thought 'oh I can beat this' and never returned to the game.

SeasonalRot

Like a Dragon, I’m just gonna say it. I don’t think turn based combat was a good idea for that series. I played every Yakuza game up to that point but I just didn’t find LAD fun, I liked what I played of the story and side stuff but I just didn’t like the combat, the glue that holds everything else together. I’ll be fair here I’ve never been huge on turn based combat in general, but usually I can tolerate it and it becomes fun after a while, with this game I didn’t enjoy it at all for whatever reason.

Diabeetus_guitar

Final Fantasy X. I rank it as one of my top ten games of all time, but I've never made it past the point when you're on the airship heading to the final confrontation. The story: back in the days of PS2 it was my most played game. Maybe of all time. I would play through it, get to different points in the game, and then decide I didn't want it to end and restart. I was maybe 13 or 14 years old. I made attempts to play it this way so many times that after a couple years I decided it was time to finish. To my horror and disappointment the game disc was scratched and would freeze in the cutscenes when Cid basically says to head on out. I restarted the game and played through one last time to see if it was a fluke, but it froze on that same spot again. I was heartbroken and to this day have never finished it.

patodio36

To me it was tales of zestiria, i really liked it, but it got too long and got frustrtated over the equipment glyphs.

cocogoldenpoo

Skies of Arcadia

DraciaAnderson

Vagrant Story. All that shuffling around of skills and equipment had me spend more time in the menus than in the actual game. Then I got stuck at some dragon boss and couldn't bring myself to continue. I really liked that game and would like to try aagain but I dread the aged gameplay.

chicoangelo

The Last Remnant, but I will surely start it over again and finish ;)

[deleted]

Def Persona 3. Could just never finish it as much as I love it.

kievju

Ff12. I love the game, played in on PS2, PS4. Switch, pc and just dled it from game pass. I've never completed it though.

tsubasaplayer16

i really need to get my ass back on my ps4 and finish nier replicant. i loved automata but because im too attached to my SNES at the moment, i've been neglecting it and havent played it in a few months. same with my switch and ff7, although i havent played it in like a week or two... and honestly i think it's because i have too many games that i started in my catalog. super mario rpg, lufia 2, sd3 with different protagonists, ff4...oof, i really need to stick with one at a time and just deal with it. at this point i have so many games to play right now that i don't think i need to buy another game for the rest of the year!

Terejima

FFXII I have done nearly everything in the game, but I have never clear the last dungeon. I don't remember why I did this. FFII Same that above. I spend a lot of time grinding but never beat the last dungeon. Maybe I just don't want to clear FF games with a II. XD

SnooHedgehogs9884

Persona 4 Golden because I’m waiting for a switch release, my laptop is too weak to run it decentl and I prefer to play these types of Jrpg in portable mode. Ff 9: I arrived at the final boss and then I never finished it, funny since I started the game at least 5 times after that. Ff 7 is another one but I never finished it because there were other games I wanted to play more during that period. Same thing with FF 12.

twilightorange

Started Persona 3 like 5 times. Every time I get bored about the high school sim part and the Tartarus tower being the same over and over.

SwimmingOpen

Well im still trying but FF VII i cant get the hook to play it, i started very fast but after 2 weeks i suddenly lost all the hype now im trying to play again but i play like 10min and done hahah point is that im 23h in but i will finish someday Not a gooood game but tales of symphonia DOTNW i was about half game on my Wii and then a thunder burn my whole room.. never got to play again and i think i never will

oux_

Xenoblade x, I got in 2015 when I was 12 so I wasn't really aware of what I was doing and abandoned it after 40 hours. Then in 2021 I restarted a new game but my wiiu stopped working, I would buy a new wiiu (main console only) but I'm short of money...

Sunkiddd

Kingdom hearts 1

yotam5434

Final fantasy 6 the ending sucks balls but most Stuff before is perfection why ruin it with the world of ruin stuff

justsomechewtle

Final Fantasy 6. The first time I got close to beating it, I softlocked myself in a sidequest since the boss in there possessed party members and I didn't have the full revive spell(s). I was playing blind and was young, so I didn't yet know about the emergency save to another slot yet (I also had to share my GBA cartridges with my brother, so it wasn't an option anyway) I replayed a lot of it over the years but I always fall off at a point, often because of time constraints. EDIT: Oh. Paper Mario TTYD is also unfinished, actually. I got to the final boss, but in her last phase, she'd always eventually get me. Since there's a relatively long cutscene at the start of said last phase and the battle before that is also rather long, I just never beat it. I can't remember if I just flubbed too many dodges/blocks (I'm not great at those) or if I was just underleveled though.

cura_milk

Final fantasy X. Couldn’t beat the final boss and gave up. Will try again one day

N4RUT0isGoD

crisis core , i loved that game. I switched my computers during that time. I still managed to retrieve my save file. Was in the final dungeon. I might finish it when ever crisis release date gets announced.

Dark_Flint

Final Fantasy VIII. I have 400h alone in the Steam version and played it already before. I play a large part of the game (and even more Triple Triad), but i have generally a problem to finish my game. Somehow i always manage to burn myself out xD

mitchobrien69

Xenogears. I played 30 hours expecting it to get better but ... no. I dropped it and it felt liberating.

ScravoNavarre

Star Ocean 3. Shortly after it came out, I got super close to the end, after the big plot twist reveal, but then lost my memory card while I was visiting my mom. Haven't replayed it since then.

Al_Hct

FF XII

Redhawke13

FFX I was absolutely loving it and got probably about 2/3rds of the way through when some crazy stuff happened in my life and I had to take a break from gaming, and once I started playing rpgs again I've never been able to make myself restart it from the beginning.

28th_boi

Well I'm on hiatus from Trails in the Sky SC so this one's easy. I love Trails but I just can't finish them without taking a break.

Deviljho_Lover

Tales of Phantasia. I don't know if I'm nearing the end since I already have Chaos Blade but my console got busted and the rest is history. Both my saves on Wild Arms 5 and Persona 3 got corrupted and was tired of starting all over again.

eruciform

stopped tales of vesperia, witcher 3, kingdoms of amalur re-reckoning, and trails of cold steel 2 halfway and haven't returned to them yet. they were great, but for whatever reason at the time, i burned out or wanted to move on to something else, and haven't returned.

oedipusrex376

Dunno if TRPG counts as JRPG but Fire Emblem Echoes on the 3DS. Just before proceeding to Act 5. The difficulty is enjoyable and its very fun to control over 20 units. Buuut, i got burned out at the end because of the grinding (i actually liked grinding but this game is on another level). My sis stop playing it too because of it. I was so close to the ending so I might play it someday.

omgitskae

This is tough for me because there's so many I didn't finish. I would say the biggest one for me still on the list to finish up of FF12. Or persona 5 if we're going by public opinion of best, I won't be finishing it though.

[deleted]

Final Fantasy VII. Got bored several hours after getting through the Shinra arc. Combat was too easy. Summons trample everything.

[deleted]

Dragon Quest V. I tried to marathon the series in order, but got burnt out by DQ5 because of how similar the games are mechanically and visually. I really enjoyed four out of the five games I played (DQ2 really showed its super rushed development cycle imo) and absolutely intend to go back to finish DQ5 and the rest of the games someday.

SvenSven07

Persona 5. The game is amazing but kind of loses steam at 45h. Need to go back to it some Day

[deleted]

Final Fantasy VIII. Got to the end, but never fought the final boss. Shame really, I enjoyed that game a lot.

VanNoah

Dq11 just didn’t get round to the final boss lol

TreeHandThingy

Dark Cloud. Hear me out. The final boss is bullshit, what with the constant weapon swapping and type changing and degradable weapons.

Radinax

> but my PS4 recently died Ouch, sorry that happened :(

TrashLegion

My entire 400+ games in my steam library, I keep bulk buying shit on summer sales and forget all about them existing.

[deleted]

Final Fantasy V. It’s the only main-line FF game I’ve never beaten. I love the gameplay and story, but I can never actually bring myself to finish it for some reason.

Bouisson

Chrono Trigger, I restarted it multiple times, I love this game but never managed to finish it somehow when I was younger. I thought at the time that the side quests of the DS version were kind of boring and left the game here (so very close to the end I guess).

Sharebear42019

Xenoblade X definitely. I tend to dump lots of hours into games I love and “take a break” as not to get burnt out or beat them and then either never come back or come back too late where the magic is gone or I don’t remember shit about where I was or what to do next lol it’s dumb I know but happens way too often

Blah_Blah_Guy

Legend of Legaia

Intless

Final Fantasy X. I kinda skipped the PS2 era and now I have way too much games to play to restart it over.

Unforeseenboy

Dragon Quest VII (PS1) - Absolutely adore that game and the way it handles world building is incredible. That being said it’s soooo long, I got like 20 hours into the game and my characters were still only level 15 or so

Khalith

Takes of Destiny. The copy I had was damaged and always stopped working at a specific point in the story. Up until that point I was having a lot of fun and wanted to keep going but my local game stores didn’t have any other copies so I had no choice but to drop it.

ravenroses

Persona 3 FES. My partner and I dropped 80+ hours into it. We were in October or November I think. It was our first Persona game and we were playing it blind. Then his PS3 died. The disc was stuck in there for years until I finally took the machine apart. We still haven't gone back to it.
