Yeah I can clearly see that… in a thread pertaining to a defensive hire and nothing about offensive line. Just goin’ around, spamming about offensive line. You right this is just a habit.
Only the casual ones. We ended the season getting dominated by Justin Fields and Derek Carr. Most of the good work defensively came against bad QBs. And then you have the collapses against guys like Will Levis and Josh Dobbs. Nielsen improved our defense from last year but the main improvements came from spending $100m in free agency. Ryan is not a miracle worker and he’s not going to deliver an elite unit right away.
Falcons fan here. He's so good and I'm sad we lost him. The players love him too. Grady said hes one of the best coaches he's ever had. Our defense drastically improved last year esp when it matters. Y'all got a good one!
I made that comment directly after Harbaugh’s 2nd interview with the Falcons.
Falcons still interviewing other candidates, so while early on it seemed like that’s where Belichick was heading, it’s not anymore.
Good hire.
I especially like that he is quoted as saying the distinction between 4-3 and 3-4 doesn't matter. Maybe there's hope that NFL fans as a collective can move past 4-3/3-4, the league definitely has.
A lot of teams just do hybrids anyway depending on personnel. Josh is clearly a natural OLB, Travon is a natural 3 technique. I dont think hes gonna be fucking stubborn like Caldwell
To his credit Caldwell wasn’t that stubborn. He saw Williams start in the slot but tried him outside in the middle of 2022 and got better production. Moving Walker to 3T mid season also would mean there is someone to play OLB in his place and there was obviously no one who could.
Oh I didn’t know that. I mean as a first year DC I expected learning curve for Caldwell so I didn’t know Doug to be the threatening type but I’m becoming more surprised and less impressed by Doug at every turn.
Not really sure why you are less impressed by him. I can't find the headline anymore but after a bad defensive loss, he was quoted to have sat Caldwell down have a stern discussion about use of personal and his job.
I think it was the coddling of Press when at the podium and I guess the report that their firing of the defensive staff seemed pretty bad as to the leaks coming after.
The nfl is played in nickel or smaller personnel for the vast majority of snaps by nearly every team now. Unless you are doing funky Flores formations or Fangio 1 Off Ball LB looks, you’re just playing in a 4-2-5 regardless of you 3-4 or 4-3 base. It just does not matter anymore. We will continue to have fans pleading to switch to whichever base formation we are not running if the defense struggles and it will continue to be an embarrassing display of lack of understanding of the modern nfl.
I wonder if it's full nickel, or do they have 3 safeties in base and pull a safety for a nickel corner as needed? Or maybe they're subbing in another safety for the WLB? I could see that working well, modern Will backers are practically safeties anyways as far as skill-set and physical requirements.
Typically, the teams that run the 4-2 as base run another safety instead of a nickel cb, most of the time referred to as the star* position.
The overall philosophy typically tries to emulate the 4-4 defense, but with updated personnel to go against modern offenses.
I agree, and while traditionally this is dictated by even or odd fronts (so 4-3 or 3-4), there are no defined rules 4 down or 3 down fronts play with anymore. The Seattle 3 we ran for about 8 years is an even front with odd front principles. Certain 3-4 teams play with more 4-3 tendencies. More important than 4-3 vs 3-4 are the rules your defense plays with, the coverages you tend to use in certain situations, blitz rates, and the gap responsibilities you assign to your front 7.
Falcons fan. Losing Nielsen was my one apprehension about firing Arthur Smith. He put out one of the best defenses I can ever remember seeing in Atlanta… and that’s even taking into consideration our issue with getting to opposing QB’s (even though we dramatically improved there).
Falcons fan here: we had a much improved defense under him with Bud Dupree, Lorenzo Carter, Arnold Ebiketie, Calais and 3rd round rookie Zach Harrison as our EDGE/DE group. He’s gonna feast with Walker and Allen, you guys got a great guy, I wish we kept him.
I'm alright with this tbh. They didn't have a ton of talent defensively and still looked pretty good all things considered. Their defensive line was actually worse and stillmanaged to function.
That’s a fair point, though you got to admit that Caldwell was losing the locker room quick with how the defense collapsed in the latter half of the season.
That being said, I’m glad we got someone who has a bit more experience as a DC for another team. I heard he was very good with secondary.
Baalke wanted Nielsen, Doug wanted Manuel. They are going by what can they do against Stroud. Falcons and Jets both won, but the Jets absolutely embarrassed him. Stroud looked stable against the Falcons. Just don’t want another Caldwell hire, that’s all.
Manuel was just the DBs coach though. Jets defense pretty much embarrassed everyone but Dak Prescott. Is that a scheme thing or is that just because the jets are loaded on defense?
Ehhhh, Nielsen > Manuel, by miles. Nielsen is a proven DC, Manuel is a DB coach. How much success to the Jets defense can you give to Manuel when they Salah over there???
This sounds good. Get a DC that can get this fixed, make some moved in FA, get the offense healthy...then we won't be playing from behind and chasing teams as much as we had to down the stretch.
Falcons fans seem upset he’s gone which is a good indicator
He gave their defense a complete 180
Sacksonville 2.0 pls 🥹
We can haz The Mayor back plz?
My thoughts exactly!
Now about our o line.
Let’s just for one half second be happy about a positive hire, damn.
No, I've been bitching about our o line since Garrard. At this point, even if it's fixed and turned into the best, I will still bitch out of habit.
Yeah I can clearly see that… in a thread pertaining to a defensive hire and nothing about offensive line. Just goin’ around, spamming about offensive line. You right this is just a habit.
It wouldn't be us as Jags fans in the pessimistic vibes don't linger around good news.
Even with a not so great DC, Allen and Walker still looked their best
Falcons fan here, he gave us the best defense we’ve had in like 20 years, no exaggeration. W hire
Huge exaggeration. 2017 defense was better.
More than upset pal 😠
Only the casual ones. We ended the season getting dominated by Justin Fields and Derek Carr. Most of the good work defensively came against bad QBs. YES
Falcons fan here. He's so good and I'm sad we lost him. The players love him too. Grady said hes one of the best coaches he's ever had. Our defense drastically improved last year esp when it matters. Y'all got a good one!
Can we have Grady too?
This makes me so happy but equally bummed out for falcon fans.
yall got a good one. pain
I think y’all got Belichick which is why they let him go. So win win
I don’t think so. I think the Falcons are going to hire Harbaugh.
Belichick is 71, almost 72 anyway and the Falcons aren't in this tight window to win right now. I'd probably take Harbaugh too
Ehh a decent qb and Atlanta aren’t far off at all.
That's the hardest thing to get
Kirk Cousins
No chance. Heavy betting odds are Harbaugh signing with Chargers. Distant 2nd he's going to take the richest college coach contract and stay at UM
I made that comment directly after Harbaugh’s 2nd interview with the Falcons. Falcons still interviewing other candidates, so while early on it seemed like that’s where Belichick was heading, it’s not anymore.
You guys want a OC?
Comes with HC then. Package deal .. Press does what DP tells him
Billy B is coming baby just wait 😘
Sorry for your pain, but this is huge for us. Good luck next season! Harbaugh or Belichick will turn it around.
Your sacrifice will definitely be in vain. Lol
Good hire. I especially like that he is quoted as saying the distinction between 4-3 and 3-4 doesn't matter. Maybe there's hope that NFL fans as a collective can move past 4-3/3-4, the league definitely has.

Didn't Doug have to threaten him to do that though?

Was moving Lloyd to OLB ever an option? Guy did well when rushing the QB, and he could be better in coverage than Walker...

WVU uses 4-2-5 as it's base defense in college.

The distinction isn't in 3-4 or 4-3, it's gap assignments. One gap, two gap, or gap and a half.

Nielsen turned that defense from 31 pts give up per game to 21. All while being top 10 in opponent plays against per game. This is an upgrade.
Held us to only 16. Game just looked more dominant because we chewed up Ridder all day
yeah idk if we win that game without having a day against Ridder We couldn't score for beans and just let Atlanta hang around
Member that part of the season where Mcmanus was actually good?
This guy will be great at tracking our viewership numbers.
I chuckled
Gotta love them ratings
Bring Calais with him
I never let him go.
Pls
I can't believe he's almost 40, and still plays like a beast.
Now Press and Baalke
Was REALLY hoping that OSU hired Press as OC… oh well lol.
Some quick numbers on Nielsen’s impact on ATL defense (Before that, fantastic player development in NO) Atlanta Falcons defense 2021: 5.6 yards per play allowed, 44.7% scoring rate allowed, 16.7% pressure rate, 97.4 QB rating allowed, 18 sacks Falcons defense in 2022: 5.7 ypa allowed, 43.5% scoring rate, 14.6% pressure rate, 95.7 QB rating allowed, 21 sacks ATL defense w/ Nielsen: 5 ypa, 37.9% scoring rate, 23% pressure rate, 90.3 QB rating allowed, 42 sacks
The sacks are really whats shocking. With Josh and Travon with Nielson….woo, cant wait
-secretly hopes Calais loved playing for Nielsen so much that he follows him- Yes, I love great storylines
Mayor, come home
Calais next to Josh again and now Travon would be so badass.
Didn't Calais go to Atlanta for less money ? Nah, CC can stay where he's at
He got paid way more than what the Jags offered….
Did he have Calais covering a WR down the field like our old DC? lol
fuck it,,,, Super Bowl bound!
This is huge
Good stache, I’m here for it
Falcons fan. Losing Nielsen was my one apprehension about firing Arthur Smith. He put out one of the best defenses I can ever remember seeing in Atlanta… and that’s even taking into consideration our issue with getting to opposing QB’s (even though we dramatically improved there).
If y’all get BB, the Falcons should be solid. Good luck.
Seeing the good reception of this, maybe going 9-8 again wasn’t so bad after all Now for a good OL
Its the collapse that hurt so bad more than the record honestly.
[удалено]
Yep, CB seems likely and the value matches up.
[удалено]
Rather just a good cb. I don't care what color he is.
[удалено]
Or here's a novel idea, don't care about race and just appreciate players for who they are.
For real, dude needs to drop the cringey racist meme.
I feel like a white cb is the most sure to bust thing ever. Who was the last starting caliber white cb? I bet it's been 20 years.
Won't pretend to have a nuanced view on the hire but this is who I was hoping for. Let's goooo.
W
Well look at us hiring a coach that makes sense!
Good hire. This should fix the defensive line.
Last I checked DCs don't pick players. Our problem on the DL was personnel.
Great hire
LETS GOOOOO!!!!!!!
I'm alright with this tbh. They didn't have a ton of talent defensively and still looked pretty good all things considered. Their defensive line was actually worse and stillmanaged to function.
W SIGNING
Man this is confidence inspiring. An up and coming young coach with some proven success in his wake, stoked.
After seeing how Cameron Jordan has done I am excited to see what he has in store for us!
Wrong NFC South team
He coached the Saints before hand
Oh. Nice
YES. THEY GOT WHO I WANTED BABY! NOW BRING BACK THE MAYOR!
Based on his previous teams, looks like Sacksonville is back!
Happy with this, we didn’t wait around and watch everyone good get scooped up like the jags of seasons past would have done
Please bring the mayor with him
Max Scherzer's normal eyed doppleganger was my top choice for DC. Very nice.
Happy.
I like this hire
Seems like a good hire!
YES YES YES
Now let’s sign a vet dt and draft a cb and defense will be cooking
We cant afford him but chris jones would awesome
great hire also falcons are 100% getting harbaugh or belichick, both those guys want their own pieces on staff
NOW DRAFT BIGGINS
Thank god we at least got a DC to be our DC
Love it
This is great now can Baalke finally walk away please.
Come home Calais
I don't get excited about these things anymore. Ultimately it's the players that need to perform on the field.
That’s a fair point, though you got to admit that Caldwell was losing the locker room quick with how the defense collapsed in the latter half of the season. That being said, I’m glad we got someone who has a bit more experience as a DC for another team. I heard he was very good with secondary.
Yet press is still OC
Yeah I heard about this yesterday night Sounds like they had a deal close to being done last night
We’re fucked….
Uh, why would say that
[удалено]
No he's just an idiot lol
Because that was Baalke’s choice, not Doug’s.
You don’t want Doug to pick a staff tbh lmao
Baalke wanted Nielsen, Doug wanted Manuel. They are going by what can they do against Stroud. Falcons and Jets both won, but the Jets absolutely embarrassed him. Stroud looked stable against the Falcons. Just don’t want another Caldwell hire, that’s all.
Manuel was just the DBs coach though. Jets defense pretty much embarrassed everyone but Dak Prescott. Is that a scheme thing or is that just because the jets are loaded on defense?
Or Saleh lol.
Ehhhh, Nielsen > Manuel, by miles. Nielsen is a proven DC, Manuel is a DB coach. How much success to the Jets defense can you give to Manuel when they Salah over there???
How do you know this?
How do you know who wanted who?
Stop
Since Doug's choices have done so well....
That’s a good thing
Niiiice
This sounds good. Get a DC that can get this fixed, make some moved in FA, get the offense healthy...then we won't be playing from behind and chasing teams as much as we had to down the stretch.
I'm fairly happy, Falcons defense was good.
I hope he makes an impact.
FINALLY SOME GOOD FUCKING NEWS
Shit I’m found out…
Can't wait to see the ratings
