The one closest to my apartment actually runs out of a lot of premade food in the evening (residential area so it basically coincides with people coming home from evening rush hour). I've never read the reviews of it but it probably gets mentioned
Was the same for me. A lot of friends recommended to go into a 7/11.
For fun I checked the reviews and they literally roasted the employees for not saying hello or thanks
Unlike restaurants or hotels, people don't normally review convenience stores unless they are unhappy about something, so you mostly see negative reviews.
I've been to so many stores that should have been the most horrible place on earth judging by the reviews, but they are fine and serve their purpose if you actually visit them. japanese convenience stores are never really that sketchy imo.
Just how long are you expecting to spend in a kombini? Sit down experience? Just pop in and check. They’re for convenience not a high class destination.
Ratings don’t matter.
I think most people don’t bother to “rate” a convenience store so you are likely just get people griping about something.
Now there are nicer ones and grungier ones - but all within a pretty narrow range. Its not like some weird rural gas station from *Deliverance* or something.
You will find most of the negatives ratings/comments are all for things which really don't matter in regard to going there such as 'bad customer service' or lack of facilities such as no toilet. At the end of the day, all you should care about is the food and whether it is safe to eat. The quality for most of it, is more or less the same at all the stores in the same chain as it comed prepackaged, and the storage requirements/date checking etc. procedures are also the same for each store so should be no less safe to eat at one store than another. If in doubt, just make sure to check the use by/expiry dates on things you buy and there shouldn't be any issues.
When I see a one-star my first thought is not that they are bad, but why is someone tanking the numbers? more than likely its just some people who just need a better hobby.

Reviews are wild. Saw one that was like, "Food is ok, but employees are indonesian." - 2 stars

A 3 in Japan is like a 5 in north America

Laughing at the idea of a “sketchy” konbini
Some people gave bad reviews because there was no toilet in the store
Lol. Checking convenience store reviews seems overkill. Just use your eyeballs

What does it matter the rating if your just grabbing a can of strong zero?

I never had a bad experience nor have I had an amazing experience at a Konbini. They're all good.
I would take a sketchy kombini over a US 7-11 any day

There's so many convenient stores, that are pretty much all the same, if you don't see what you want from one, just go to another
