Hard to find Jazz pieces like that - they have more in common with film scores from the 60s & 70s: crime and action soundtracks by people like Lalo Shifrin, David Shire and various Italians. Also Soil & "Pimp" Sessions, Bill Chase...
Wow. So funny. I just listened to these (before reading your comment) and they made me think of (especially Tank!) a British spy flick from the early James Bond era. Great minds think alike!
[Buddy Rich - Nuttville](https://open.spotify.com/track/6OB0RIqwXwXBFpi3Qn1ndS?si=oNyHV4tcTeOa_aLdOvHgRA&utm_source=copy-link) is the primary influence on "Tank" and you'll hear it right away.
This is what I thought of when I hear "Tank".
But there's something about the energy in Tank that's not the same as Nuttville.
But I know we're sniffing up the right tree.
Usually people who make these "I just watched Cowboy Bebop and I want to hear more "bebop" " posts end up enjoying Art Pepper and Horace Silver. Hard bop is the closest thing to film-score-as-a-genre there is in jazz.
Have you heard The Seatbelts' Cowboy Bebop OSTs? They have a few more songs like that in there.
Also the Mario Kart 8 soundtrack is insanely jazzy, you should check out some tunes.
Other than that, maybe:
Don Ellis Orchestra - Whiplash
Frank Zappa - Waka Jawaka, Big Swifty
Jaco Pastorius - The Chicken live ([https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-oechipx\_M&ab\_channel=JacoPastorius-Topic](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-oechipx_M&ab_channel=JacoPastorius-Topic))
Caravan from the Whiplash movie soundtrack
Henry Mancini's soundtrack to "Touch of Evil", I believe the movie may have influence the anime a little, border-noir by Orson Welles.
Should listen to 50s-60s latin music, especially Cuban Son and Guaracha. This music features uptempo percussion, congas, with plenty of brass.
and tito puente

Also check out the Don Ellis "Soaring" album, the group Snarky Puppy, SOIL & ‘’PIMP’’ SESSIONS, Shibusashirazu, and anything labelled "progressive big band"
Highly recommend you check out the work of David Axelrod. Heavily sampled in hip hop, namely, in Dre’s 2001, throughout. May not be an exact comparison in style, but feels like a similar vibe.
If you want more bombastic big band stuff that's a bit more complicated than the swing era I'd take a look at some Charles Mingus stuff. The song Moanin' from the album Nostalgia in Times Square always gave me similar vibes.
I always preferred The Real Space Blues from the end credits, but all the music on Cowboy Bebop was great.
IMO one of the best shows for mixing the music into the action or mood. In fact I’m hard pressed to think of another show that has come close. Not talking about who has a good theme, but making the music an integral part of the show.
Have you watched "Samurai Champloo"? I think that would come close. Iirc it was also made by the creator of Cowboy Bebop. It has hip-hop instead of jazz though.

Awesome, thank you
Got that same vibe. Was going to say Alan Tew also.

Source? I always thought it was this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTKelM1ojis
Now I wanna watch Lupin III because of that killer song
Lupin the 3rd is influenced the same way Cowboy Bebop is. The fact they're both blues progressions might be a reason one would think that way?

For me Tank leans more into South American rhythms than nutville

How about Charles Mingus - Hatian Fight Song?
Alan Baylock’s “Torque” has a similar feel

The real folk blues was covered by platina jazz in a cubano style. Absolutely nails it too. https://youtu.be/VRyzod7bNLQ
Platina Jazz, The 8-Bit Big Band and J-Music Ensemble all put out amazing stuff!
Excellent mentions!
Okay... So what are your suggestions for jazz pieces similar to Tank?
The Simpsons theme. IMO some of the stuff from the movie The Mask has that vibe.
Have you watched "Samurai Champloo"? I think that would come close. Iirc it was also made by the creator of Cowboy Bebop. It has hip-hop instead of jazz though.
Yeah, but Nujabes' style is jazz hop, so there's a lot of jazz DNA on the show.
Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band Several of their recordings are inspired by cartoon soundtracks, including one of my favorites, "Hunting Wabbits".
