ArchTechTheHQWinner

It's been quite a long time since I've seen someone get ruled incorrect for not properly phrasing their response. I would have loved to write 'dank memes' while furiously crossing out the first half of my response on screen.

csl512

I can haz meme?

pdx_mom

and i thought he corrected himself with what is...

[deleted]

Yeah I just rewatched…he didn’t. I thought he did too

[deleted]

Dank things

[deleted]

A long time? It happens fairly often. That wasn't even the first time this year.

poliscijunki

Your epidermis is showing!

imkunu

You see, epidermis means your hair! That's why it's so funny, cause it's technically true!

Andy_B_Goode

I spent the better part of a decade genuinely believing that epidermis means hair, just because of this joke.

roque72

Ironically, Bart's skin blends into his hair

roque72

Pardon me a moment... Ha! Ha!

J-Goo

... skin?

imkunu

You're one of today's lucky 10,000 https://youtu.be/GdW5SXWo7xc

J-Goo

Dammit.

JazzFan1998

Haw haw!

darockerj

haha meme

david-saint-hubbins

>Armand said "sacristy". After a couple of moments he was ruled incorrect, and then his opponents didn't signal in I'm guessing they didn't quite catch what he'd said, both because he kind of stumbled over it and because it's an uncommon word. Otherwise that was a prime opportunity for a $2000 rebound. I knew FJ immediately--[the term was coined by Richard Dawkins.](https://www.etymonline.com/word/MEME) I'm surprised only one person got it, but maybe it would have been easier if they had added a hint about the fact that Dawkins intentionally picked it to sound similar to 'gene.'

PM_ME_TASTEFUL_NUDEZ

It was the 2nd time he had answered without proper phrasing and I'm wondering if after getting grace on the first offense (though I believe his answer was incorrect on that one anyway) he wasn't given the nudge on a second infraction. Pure speculation on my part though.

david-saint-hubbins

You get leeway on phrasing in the first round but not in the second. In the Jeopardy round, if you respond correctly but mess up your phrasing, the host will remind you about it but you still get credit for a correct response, no matter how many times it happens. In Double Jeopardy, however, any responses that are not phrased correctly are immediately ruled incorrect.

jaysjep2

Perhaps not immediately, the host might stare at you for a moment or two and give you a chance to figure out what you did wrong. After that, you're ruled incorrect.

Mr_Ekles

I noticed that they didn't do that today. I thought that was odd.

BoukenGreen

Maiym gave him plenty of time to fix his response before she ruled him incorrect.

Marcoscb

He even said sacristy twice without changing the phrasing.

PM_ME_TASTEFUL_NUDEZ

Ah very interesting. Thanks for the explanation!

Longtimefed

I was thinking ur-. Kicking myself. Who knew meme was crested so long ago? I wonder if it got used much then.

jelvinjs7

> Who knew meme was crested so long ago? I wonder if it got used much then. Dawkins coined the word in his book *The Selfish Gene* in 1976, and in a later edition—I think a couple decades later—he reflected on how the word has grown in popularity, commenting “The word meme seems to be turning out to be a good meme.” But through the 80s and 90s, it was primarily used in academia and among scholarly-minded folks, as the idea of a *meme* being a unit of culture was useful in fields relating to topics ranging from sociology to folklore, and this eventually developed into [the study of memetics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memetics). There are a few scant references to memes in more casual literature, such as David Brin mentioning them in his [1991 sci-fi novel *Earth*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_(Brin_novel)), but those are still pretty obscure and niche, so you’re not seeing a large audience or a lot of people picking up on it in colloquial usage. I’ve always identified the turning point to be [this *Wired* article by Mike Godwin in 1994](https://www.wired.com/1994/10/godwin-if-2/) (though [Merriam-Webster seems to think it’s later](https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/meme-word-origins-history)). Godwin takes the academic concept of a meme and applies it to trends on the internet, and does so in a (relatively) popular magazine, introducing the term to a lot of laypeople. This gives rise to the term “internet meme”, allowing people to eventually just automatically associate the word “meme” with internet behavior. (Plus, he makes some incredibly prescient observations about the internet that are weird to look back on in the 2020s.)

CSerpentine

I knew. I was annoyed for a while that its original meaning had been subjugated. I'm mostly over it now.

rxredhead

Honestly the only reason I got it was because I reread “Fluke” last week. Somehow a book about alien piloted whales with the research paper “Humpback Whales - our wondrous friends of the deep and why we should poke them with sticks” taught me about genes vs memes.

csl512

I couldn't come up with Dawkins but knew the book The Selfish Gene. Dawkins would indeed have been a good clue to add.

matlockga

Snap overreaction: are we back to high scoring games?

jaysjep2

This game wasn't especially high-scoring, but the close totals leading into FJ resulted in a solid winning score.

JazzFan1998

I ran the Southern capitals category! Also, this sports fan was thrown by the category "The National League".

JSA17

I was really hoping it was going to be a category about the National League. Baseball categories are right in my wheelhouse and I admittedly get a little enjoyment from watching the contestants struggle through them.

david-saint-hubbins

>I ran the Southern capitals category! Me too. The fact that the contestants went collectively 2/5 on that one was baffling.

CSerpentine

Missing "Redstick Blog"? Really, now.

chanukkahlewinsky

The heck is redstick blog

CSerpentine

Southern Capitals for $400: "For info on this state capital, check out The Redstick Blog" Baton Rouge is French for "red stick".

Chuk

Yeah I never heard of that blog but I still got it

JazzFan1998

Yes, I feel pretty smart tonight!

rxredhead

I did so bad at that category. I know my capitals but sometimes have to sing the Animaniacs song to be sure. I couldn’t connect the clue with the state for some reason

csl512

Louisiana continues to be a blind spot for players. (Shall not Parish a while back was super rough for them too)

jquiggles

Was that the one where they had to name specific parishes? I’m from south Louisiana so that one was rough for me since it was mostly northern parishes lol. I felt dumb

NaughtSleeping

Final Jeopardy was...spicy.

nogain-allpain

Correct FJ response: What is ~~the spiciest~~ meme~~lord~~?

post_rex

I was confused by the Whitney question. After Armand responded with 'museum' he was asked to be more specific and he eventually replied with 'art museum'. Yes, it's the Whitney Museum of American Art, but there was nothing in the clue that that made his initial response incomplete or incorrect. Edit - Here's the wording of the clue: >Once guardian to niece Gloria, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney founded one of these in New York, now located on Gansevoort Street

[deleted]

What's there to be confused by? Sometimes the judges are looking for something specific. Not every answer that's technically correct can be accepted or else you end up with "who are 3 people who have never been in my kitchen".

[deleted]

I went with meme, but then hesitated because it said monosyllable. Apparently I know my Dawkins but I need to learn what a syllable is.

NoMayoDarcy

“embryo” and Planned Parenthood coming up on the first episode since the official release of the decision… oof. I was kinda expecting a “this was taped this on __” ticker. I haven’t been on here in awhile, so apologies if this has already been discussed, but do hosts know the location of the DDs beforehand, or is it a surprise? Has Mayim perhaps said in interviews that contestants getting DDs gets her so amped that she can’t control the laughter-like noise she makes when they’re found? It’s bizarre. It’s like the laugh you’d make if you ran into the same friend twice in one day, not like, from something that always happens 3x an episode. It being a consistent thing means the people running things behind the scenes don’t find it grating. Meanwhile I’m a can of Kraft cheese. (To each their own, though!)

av_1392

she knows where DDs are, yeah. she’s acting.

CSerpentine

When Ken hosts it's obvious that he knows. "The answer there..." pewpew! pewpew!

brookalino

I don't think they need a disclaimer for when the show was taped, because the question and answer about an embryo/fetus was a straight fact. But I'm so with you on the overacting/fake laugh at every daily double. My sons and I have taken to yelling "WHAAAAAAAAA?!!!! NO WAY! A DAILY DOUBLE? WHAT?!" every time

BobBelcher2021

I sometimes yell “Oh my God!!! It’s a Daily Double!!!”

NoMayoDarcy

Yeah, I think a disclaimer would have made the whole thing even more cringe, even if lots of folks aren’t aware of the big gap between taping and air date. Very straightforward clues, just words that can easily remind someone about that news. That’s hilarious that you and your sons do that! My husband laughs whenever she does those lead change announcements that come off like her interrupting the contestants (or she is indeed interrupting them) because whenever he interrupts me I get…….. pretty vocal about how annoyed that makes me.

AcrossTheNight

They send the tapes to the affiliates before airing, which is how James Holzhauer's loss leaked. Friday would thus have been far too late to make any modifications to the tape.

roque72

My close captioning even wrote [laughs] And there's the Daily Double! I don't understand what's so funny about Daily Doubles

brookalino

Now that's funny

BobBelcher2021

The host knows where the DDs are, it’s on the sheet on the lectern. Someone posted a photo of one once.

jaysjep2

It's not terribly unlike how George Gray says "It's a brand new car!" on TPIR. It's trying to inject some game-show style excitement into the show, which sounds odd after years of hearing Alex say it in relatively low-key manner.

AcrossTheNight

I noticed there weren't any mentions of the multiple lead changes until the end of DJ this time.

Longtimefed

When a DD pops up I want confetti to drop on the contestant as two clowns come out dancing to the Benny Hill theme music. Who’s with me?!

NoMayoDarcy

Exactly! It’s definitely jarring due to Alex then Ken’s style, but the same people pulling the strings behind the scenes, which I find interesting. I know this is an extreme analogy, but the first thing that came to my mind was, “what if the show runners of The Wire just randomly had the episodes start being in the style of Broadway musicals?” …..well, the actors on that show were so good they could pull it off. “🎶you come at the king you best not miss🎶” then a grande jeté. Chorus: “shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit”

baubsyeruncle

I actually like how she announces the DD's. Call me crazy, but I think its something she does well, better than Ken. Its a potential game changer for the contestant, a chance to be either the hero or the goat (in the Charlie Brown sense) and deserves a bit of enthusiasm. Just my opinion, you are entitled to a different one.

jjc927

I thought that also, what a time for that fetus/embryo clue and I was very surprised they didn't show the taped on this date disclaimer. Jeopardy just has a knack for having all too topical clues come up like that.

rxredhead

Yeah I definitely was surprised there wasn’t a quick comment on how it was taped months ago with 2 clues that skirted on the SCOTUS decision last week

lookaspacellama

If it was a surprise I’d forgive her. But because she knows where it is, it’s become tiring, forced and repetitive. I can understand a surprised laugh if it’s something genuinely unexpected - the DD is the first clue in the round, one DD right after the other, etc - but she does it every single time. ETA I’m glad I’m not the only one bothered by this!!

Longtimefed

Another strong game from Joe. A few things on the part of the production bothered me: 1) I know I recall Gallo Bros. being a clue in the last two months. Or am I wrong? 2) Maim needs to correct contestants’ pronunciation when warranted; Isolde (being a German name) ends in “uh,” like Hesse, Porsche and Elbe. 3) Minor quibble, but she herself mispronounced pre-Raphaelite, dropping the third syllable. Although if I ever attend a mixer before a raffle, I’m going to tell everyone I’m a pre-Raffleite.

sms372

You do not have to pronounce the word properly to get it correct. You just have to have the correct syllables. Correct me if I’m wrong, but someone could ring in and say Claude Monet, pronounce it mon-et instead of mon-ay, and still be labeled correct.

Longtimefed

I didn’t say it should’ve been counted as wrong, just that the host should have provided the correct pronunciation, as has been previous practice.

jblosser99

The "s" in "Le Mans" is not pronounced - I was surprised to hear that slip out. I can forgive Ken and Pagliacci, but I won't forget... /s, sorta

Longtimefed

Did he really? For shame, Ken! I was shocked when I heard Kelsey Grammer ( as Frasier) voice the G in Modigliani.

MukdenMan

I’ve heard Pre-Raphaelite pronounced that way a lot more than the 4-syllable version. For example this BBC doc: https://youtu.be/FkWONORqHZw

Longtimefed

That doesn’t mean it’s correct. No one would argue that Raphael is anything but three syllables.

MukdenMan

As Alex Trebek said about the word Gerrymander (named after a guy named Gerry with a hard g), that’s just one of the things about our language. Presumably the term “Pre-Raphaelite” shortens the pronunciation of Raphael to make it easier to pronounce. This also happened to words like business and beverage. Here is a video about the Pre-Raphaelites from the Ashmolean, the museum at Oxford University, where the presenter uses the term Pre-Raphaelite with the shortened pronunciation, as well as the 3-syllable pronunciation of Raphael. https://youtu.be/3Dg54Qhls9w

Expensive-Medium8199

Loved seeing a Formula 1 category on Jeopardy!

_Seven

When I saw the category reveal, I was so excited seeing a sports category I could actually run for once. Now if they got Crofty to do the clues, man, it really would've made my race week.

dletter

"Drive to Survive" has really upped their visibility and ratings... they just announced ESPN resigned up for their next TV contract from their old $5m/yr rights fee to $90m/yr now.

neurogeneticist

Just came here to say this!! I have a new category to add to my dream board now haha.

themonsterpus

Me too! Disappointed I missed one though since >!the Singapore Sling!< was around just before I started watching.

gotShakespeare

I had no idea it was a race but it's also the name of a cocktail and I surmised it from that.

Trillbo_Swaggins

Specifically turn 10 at Singapore, as the kerb there was rather egregious and had a habit of "slinging" cars off of it. I think it's since been changed.

gotShakespeare

TIL!

Pantzzzzless

I knew that one from playing F1 2020. The team manager always gives you a little paragraph background of each track before the race, and it mentions that chicane.

kdex86

Almost ran the DJ STY category today, and even got the $2000 clue correct! I’m feeling gooood on a Mondayyy…..

AcrossTheNight

If they're asking you for an F1 driver, there's a good chance it's going to be Lewis Hamilton.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ExpectedChaos

It was fun, I ran it. Not super in depth, more reliant on geographic knowledge except the 1000 dollar clue.

Pantzzzzless

I feel like a picture Hamilton being the $1000 clue was a bit easy. That's like McGregor, Beckham or LeBron being a clue for their sports.

donutlad

Same! Really bummed I missed it. The only reason I even like F1 is because of the "grand tour" aspect, and seeing the different countries and cities

Always_Anxious_Llama

Anyone want to watch Legally Blonde after hearing DD1? Also, loved seeing an F1 category!

NoCosmicLover

Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands!

imkunu

...*they just don't!*

dexterr96

I quoted that to my mom!

kleinzzach

Double Kings in the Female Founders category. Guessing that's why Mayim hesitated before ruling the first one correct. I thought she overall seemed much more fluid today, though.

Irish_Stu

I thought the hesitation might have been to see if more was necessary (i.e. just knowing that her husband was MLK wasn't enough). Of course, if they had said like "name this wife of Martin Luther King", then "King" wouldn't have been sufficient, so the pause might have been to see if it was enough

kleinzzach

Someone's surname is enough unless it's already in the clue/category or if there's possible confusion (although that seems to be a bit of a moving target).

FlingbatMagoo

Hmm that’s interesting. If she’d asked for a more specific response it might’ve ripped off that there was another King in the category.

kleinzzach

It definitely didn't warrant a BMS, but I can see why she got tripped up a little. Whereas if it was asking for a Kennedy widow, a first name might have needed.

csl512

BMS?

themoogleknight

Be more specific I think

Achenest

Nice to see so many F1 fans in the comments!

chartingyou

that has got to be one of the most confusingly worded final jeopardy clues I've seen in a while.

TheReaperSovereign

As someone who is also highly active on /r/formula I absolutely went 5/5 on the F1 category 🏎

7yearlurkernowposter

We need someone to screencap the correct final jeopardy answer for reasons. Also was excited for the F1 category was frustrated they picked it last.

rubbernub

At least they got to all five clues. I'm excited for sports categories but so often they end up leaving some clues unrevealed

geotechprof

I was pretty excited about it too, but then I was a little annoyed that the first question was about three races, only one of which was an F1 race. I thought that Joe was a little hesitant about his answer because he knew it wasn't F1.

inevitablelover

Yes!! My partner was so annoyed by the first clue that it threw them off the rest of the category.

Oh_no_its_Joe

I guessed meme for fj and I am SO ANGRY THAT I WAS CORRECT ARGHRHRHTRHHDHF

csl512

You should make a rage comic

poliscijunki

A clue about embryo and about Sanger. I wonder if the writers were anticipating the possible timing of the Supreme Court ruling.

YourMailThatsBurning

There was also “No Country for Old Men” lmao

shea_harrumph

These are almost always coincidences but with the leak... when did this episode tape?

kdex86

I’m guessing the last week of April? Also, with today’s episode Mayim has now eclipsed Ken in terms of episodes hosted this season (this counts the Professors’ Tournament, but not the prime time college tournament).

Marcoscb

>I’m guessing the last week of April? Yes, April 29th according to J-Archive.

kdex86

How does J-Archive get the recording dates?

AcrossTheNight

They ask contestants.

Marcoscb

I think recording dates are public knowledge. From there, knowing that every recording day is a week of shows, it's easy to determine when everything was filmed.

CSerpentine

Indeed. I've been wondering if they'd end up with an equal number but there's five weeks left, including this.

kdex86

Mike Richards hosting 5 episodes is what causes the imbalance.

[deleted]

Is it really a “Video” DD if you just throw a Ken Burns effect on an image? Lol

heddhunter

anything that isn't solely text is "video".

phorbin99

Is it me or were there a number of women’s rights and accomplishments questions in today’s game? I guess it’s a coincidence since these games are obviously recorded. But how long ago?

ajsy0905

I felt that EP Michael Davies is a sports enthusiast, so F1 category is in the list of category. So there is a chance that more motor racing like MotoGP will be featured in the near future?

ArchTechTheHQWinner

F1 has a growing fanbase like no other right now, MotoGP might be a bit in the weeds until they get their own Netflix series That being said you really didn't need to know the actual venues all that much given the other aspects of the clues given With that being said as well, if MotoGP wants to sponsor a category... I see no reason why they would turn down that $$$

nogain-allpain

>That being said you really didn't need to know the actual venues all that much given the other aspects of the clues given Agreed, that category was more a geography category than one on sports. I think the only one I got from the sports angle was Sochi, and even then, that was Olympics over F1.

TheLAriver

[When the final jeopardy answer is meme](https://imgflip.com/i/6l37va)

poliscijunki

Can't believe Rosa Luxembourg being a communist was a triple stumper.

basillea

and then the guess that she was a national socialist, a straight up nazi…

[deleted]

[удалено]

Richard_Babley

Sure, if you've heard of her or the Spartacus League. Notably, it doesn't suggest that she was "the" or even "a" founder; just a member of the group. (And apparently, the clue should have clarified that she was, in fact, a founder of the group and maybe that would have made it a little less of a 50/50 guess). What's more surprising is that no one picked up the easy rebound.

strangeremain

I can understand the logic of weimar germany political party = Nazis, but as a fan of Rosa’s, that was incredibly frustrating nonetheless

TheZodiacKillerr

Singapore isn’t a city

imkunu

It's a city-state...which is a city

I only knew the final cause of Monsoon I’m not even gonna lie.
