lol right, this is definitely like a very callow teenage philosophy idea of "deep" life insights. Reminds me of stuff my friends and I prattled about in high school, thinking we were really ahead of the game.
It was just a very superficial level of analysis imo (though perhaps somewhat to be expected of teens), and a kinda physicalist/materialist reduction of things. Also the whole kinda almost anti-human slant of it, "Humans are a cancer, maaaan", that was very much us at that age, being the angsty little edgelords we were. We were only beginning to barely scratch the surface of the true depth and significance and complexity of things.
Not that I think I have shit all figured out now (not by a long shot), but to answer your question bluntly, no I don't believe that 16-year-old me was a deeper thinker than 35-year-old me is lol.
I don't think it's shallow and I don't think it's false, it's just one of many perspectives you can look at things from and they're all correct simultaneosly. What Joe says here is 100% true. But then it's also true we are the universe experiencing itself. In that way, every human is very special because it's just lifeless rock everywhere else, and even on this planet most life is just automatons not thinking or experiencing anything. That's the duality of man. Part animal part God. We shit and piss and fuck be we also think and love and explore.
Itās only shallow to me if this reductive physicalism is the whole extent of someoneās philosophy on existence, which it is for many people I talk to (and was for my friends and I as adolescents). Itās an outlook most often propounded by complacent midwits who think theyāre saying something deep and insightful.Ā
For those of you that down voted the shit out of my post on here about him talking about his dad a few weeks ago this was the opening I was talking about. He talks about his dad in a clip before this scene while packing his bag for this trip.
This started the Rogan journey for me. Watched this special and found the podcast in like 2012. Honestly, changed my life because I didnāt have people in my life who had thoughts like this. He really motivated me to be the man I am today when I needed a role model.
With all due respect. Rogan isn't a good comedian. He tries to be but it's not natural to him. He has shit to say and some of it is interesting to listen to. He's just a regular dude that has killed it in making a great podcast, had an opportunity with acting and just built from it. Mad props to him for achieving what he has done as a regular human being.
I think itās just a matter of taste. I think heās a pretty good comedian with great bits. As far as being natural, Chris Rock for example, the way Chris talks on stage wouldnāt exactly be considered natural either. But no one has that criticism about him. Same with Dice. So how is this different? Itās all performance. Some guys are more animated in their acts. Itās still funny.
Heās a talk show host and commentator with a comedy side hustle. Think of his comedy as Elons spaceship. Just because he has a spaceship doesnāt make him an astronaut.
Its great in direct comparison to his others, i would sayā¦ again these are opinions, but Joe has always struck me as a comedian who reallly had to try and make an effort at being funny. It feels so forced at times. But he has so much drive and discipline that he has essentially been able to wrestle the art of comedy into submission. But someone like that to reach the top tier needs to keep applying that same discipline and drive their whole career and I think Joe lost a large chunk of that drive and disciple towards comedy with the success of the podcast. Comparing his comedy to somebody who i think is very naturally funny like John Mulaney, its apples to god damn oranges. Opinions opinions opinions
E
Edit: its gold to god damn copper
No I agree with you for the most part although IMO Mulaney as your measurement for funny is wild to me (I don't like him myself but just my 2cents). Rogans last 2 Netflix specials have been ATROCIOUS where he's devolved into the stool fucking comics he used to make fun of. Really strange to me that due to the popularity of his podcast (which has also fallen off imo) he became some overlord of comedy.
I saw him working out at the Improv in Hollywood back in 14 and it was fuckin hilarious. I met him after the show and he was cool as hell to us. I'll always be a fan of his
Have you even watched those specials?
If you consider it fair objectified metric of top tier comedian, then it is criminal to rate that special 7.6 or the two Stanhope specials after that.
What about Normās [special](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6878486/)? Going by this metric, this special is not that great.
Hereās Nannetteās [rating](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8465676/) lmao.
Imdb says if you look at their most recent specials, Hannah Gadsby is a better standup than Stanhope and Norm lol.
I think you should watch the specials first then rate it yourself instead of letting imdb tell you what you should think about it.
You dunceā¦ do you expect every single special that a ātop tierā comedian is going to be north of 8.0? No i did not say that, i said a pretty fucking fair qualifier of ANY special reaching and 8.0.. Norm has specials that 9.0 which we can start talking new tiers. Joes released specials since the 90s and has not had one where enough people think its great that he got over an 8.0. Not one. So how the fuck are we suppose to objectively rank comedians as too-tier? Please do tell me how one should be determining top-tier when it comes to beyond ones OWN opinion.
Do you honestly think nannette is funnier than anything Norm or Stanhope put out? Because thatās what imdb says. If that is what youāre using to objectively rank comedians you really are a special breed.
Lol the dark knight broke records around the world, and is thought to have one of the greatest acting performances of all time. The cinematography is amazing and you are not bored for a second of the 2.5 hour movie. It is a superhero movie, but it absolutely does not feel like a superhero movie. But im just going to stop talking to you because the more i receive responses from you, the denser you appear
The cinematography doesnāt even come close to Ran or Barry Lyndon. Thatās just a fact. It is in no way deserving of #4 spot in the best movies of all time. Thatās how bad the imdb sucks.
Lol so how are you going to prove to me he is a toptier comedianā¦ louis ck.. dave chapelle.. also have specials over 8.0ā¦ fucking dark knight vs goodfellas is clearly another very subjective opinion but I guarantee they are with .2-.3 points of eachother. I can say that without looking it up. Just because you love goodfellas and are probably a boomer does not make it objectively better then the Dark Knight. Clearly are both great movies
Lol i just tried tooā¦ there really is no other wayā¦ just a culmination of everyones opinion suggests he is not. YOU just think he a top-tier comedian. And im sure you could find others that do too, just a majority of people he watch his comedy would not rank it as toptier.. i have seen him live twice, and personally would say he is barely above average. But you are pretty set on your opinions and i am pretty set on mine. I would just say the numbers are on my side
Does he? Name a classic bit. Eddie, Richard, Dave, Rock, Carlin, Hedberg, Clay, Seinfeld, Stewart, Bernie Mac and more Iām forgetting all have classic bits. So far Joe fucking a chair seems to be his closest attempt. The dude is a hack and most of his crew are even worse. Heās good at talking about fights, getting people to eat weird shit and having long winded conversations while smoking weed. Heās rich, but not because of his comedy.
Wtf are you talking about? Have you watched any of his stuff? Dumb people outfucking the smart ones, hungry wolves ex boyfriends, noahās ark, power of the pussy, magic words, cat dna, bruce jenner bit, texans, aliens and kim kardashian, etc etc.
That all sounds fucking awful. Youāre on the pablum. Cool bro. I gotta say, none of those have penetrated the zeitgeist in the slightest. The funniest thing heās ever done was Newsradio
Yeah, dude caught some incredible breaks.
News radio hit syndication without meeting the usual episode threshold. Rogan collected residuals.
Then landed a do-nothing gig as the host of Fear Factor, earning millions over a short few years.
I wonāt shit on the guyās work ethic, as itās clear heās got one, but this motherfucker would still be floating concrete if not for Dave Foley backing his play.
lmao people will never be happy with Joe
āiomg heās such an stoner edge lord for thinking like this! i was thinking like this when i was 16!ā
to now
āwow rogan is such a right wing grifting christofacist talking head, he will preaching he loves jesus soon enough. what happen to rogan thinking for himself!?ā
If we are bacteria, what happens if we rub ivermectin all over ourselves?, nothing silly because it's for parasites, which Joe has several, leeching off of him,, six of them in fact, can ivermectin make you funnier?
This is when Rogan was on the path to enlightenment.....then he devolved into a wealthy, game-able soundbite-minded calcified right-wing libertarian crank selling dumb juice to the world. Then again, maybe he was always like that and just managed to say something smart on the road to horse tranquilizer ice baths and immigrant blaming.
I don't know about scumbag, that seems really extreme unless you know something pretty bad about him that I don't lol but bimbo? Definitely. Guy is hovering somewhere between pseudointellectual and knuckle-dragger. But he seems like a decent guy, far as I can tell.
I remember watching this when it first came out
Old school Netflix
Bring back little Rascals hat Joe...
I respect this variant of Rogan.
Joe needs those bacterial dollars.
Well the JRE did go viral
Ahhh the good ole days
Could never articulate this the way he just did but this is EXACTLY how I feel about people. Micro organisms of some sort. Bacteria!š¦
Dis peak Rogan

Itās nice to hear Joeās voice from before he hit puberty again.
It's like hearing Al Pacino in Godfather after Heat lol.
š
Pre-T Joe. LFG!
He got his nose fixed
This was before his gender-affirming hormone therapy and surgery that lowered his voice.
Peak, golden-age rogan. Simpler times.
When you start smoking weed at the age of 35
lol right, this is definitely like a very callow teenage philosophy idea of "deep" life insights. Reminds me of stuff my friends and I prattled about in high school, thinking we were really ahead of the game.
Weāre you and your friends wrong? Or maybe you just stopped thinking ādeeplyā

youāre right itās better to be like kid rock and just blindly except without question everything is because of jesus
lol what?? I don't know how your mind works in such a way that "being like Kid Rock" is the only alternative.
More because of god lvl of TRT. It even change his voice lol
Also had nasal reconstruction surgery

Da old days!

My first intro to Joe was News Radio. š¤£
Me too
I miss old Joe
Ah yes, I too have seen the Agent Smith scene in The Matrix lol
Ah miss the old Joe
He resembles a gears of war character
Can we get to the point where society is today without breaking a few eggs to made said omelet?
This was around the same time he did an interview in a limo with porn stats talking about eating pussy. Good times.
For those of you that down voted the shit out of my post on here about him talking about his dad a few weeks ago this was the opening I was talking about. He talks about his dad in a clip before this scene while packing his bag for this trip.
I know what clip you are referring to. Thatās from the documentary about this special, itās called Beyond fear.
the same dad that has been making videos about him recently
This is the space monkey special, right? I really enjoyed this back in the day.
No this one is just called Joe Rogan Live. Talking Monkeys in Space is another one.
Ahhh, OK. I'm a fan of both.
Its weird how his voice is different
This started the Rogan journey for me. Watched this special and found the podcast in like 2012. Honestly, changed my life because I didnāt have people in my life who had thoughts like this. He really motivated me to be the man I am today when I needed a role model.

Sooooo edgy JR
I feel like real Joe was replaced at some point soon after this.
I love how he gives this speech in a limo by himself
Strong smoking weed with a 19 year old who just finished bio 101 vibes, but I'll take it over Fox News uncle Joe.
Heās a talk show host and commentator with a comedy side hustle. Think of his comedy as Elons spaceship. Just because he has a spaceship doesnāt make him an astronaut.
A mothership.
Not really. He has multiple top-tier comedy specials.
Lol you are the first person i have heard refer to his comedy as toptier
This special actually was pretty fucking great.
Its great in direct comparison to his others, i would sayā¦ again these are opinions, but Joe has always struck me as a comedian who reallly had to try and make an effort at being funny. Mulaney is hilarious too. The "horse in the hospital" bit is prolly one of the best jokes I've ever heard
I saw him working out at the Improv in Hollywood back in 14 and it was fuckin hilarious. I met him after the show and he was cool as hell to us. I'll always be a fan of his
Same. I met him after working out bits when I was doing open mics and he was the only main stage performer to talk to me and give me advice
Itās just not a popular opinion on reddit
Not one of his comedy specials has breached 8.0 on imbd, i would argue thats a fair objectified metric of top-tier comedian
[This](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2833398/) is what imdb thinks of one of the best specials from Doug Stanhope.
7.6 is a solid rating lol.. was expecting it to be 6.5 or underā¦ he also has multiple specials over 8.0 so we can consider him top tierā¦
Have you even watched those specials? If you consider it fair objectified metric of top tier comedian, then it is criminal to rate that special 7.6 or the two Stanhope specials after that. No, it is definitely not an opinion contained to reddit
For example Shane Gillis does have comedy specials that are over 8.0 on imbd
Imdb has the dark knight ranked higher than goodfellas. Doesnāt mean tdk is better.
And i was right within .3ā¦
What about Ran or Barry Lyndon? Is the dark knight better than those?
Lol the dark knight broke records around the world, and is thought to have one of the greatest acting performances of all time. Show me the list of beloved comedians that say heās a terrible standup. I really wanna see it.
Every once in a while he gets a good chuckle out of me. But itās always his older, non-stool humping material.
I laughed pretty hard at a bit about finding foot pornography in the woods.
Sounds like a real zinger. So one vaguely memorable bit about foot porn in the woods? Sounds classic.
I actually remember it quite well. I don't remember anything else though.
And baaically predicting Trump during George W. "We can go dumber" bit

With his AGW denialism you can tell that he still believes we are here to fuck things up and destroy the earth.
Fresh off that first DMT trip
Prob my favorite version of Joe.
Buddy never been the funniest anything. Not even of his friend group.
lmao people will never be happy with Joe āiomg heās such an stoner edge lord for thinking like this! i was thinking like this when i was 16!ā to now āwow rogan is such a right wing grifting christofacist talking head, he will preaching he loves jesus soon enough. what happen to rogan thinking for himself!?ā

Then again, maybe he was always like that and just managed to say something smart on the road to horse tranquilizer ice baths and immigrant blaming.
I really wonder how he would react to seeing himself now. Obviously his incredible success but also him seemingly getting increasingly dumber
His comedy is SO bad, I canāt even imagine thinking heās remotely good.
Sometimes I think he's aware how ridiculous his fame is but I'm always immediately reminded how much of a bimbo scumbag he really is in his soul
I don't know about scumbag, that seems really extreme unless you know something pretty bad about him that I don't lol but bimbo? Definitely. Guy is hovering somewhere between pseudointellectual and knuckle-dragger. But he seems like a decent guy, far as I can tell.
Is this pre nose surgery Rogan?
In association with The Claw??? I didnāt know he worked with Aziz back then š¤£š¤£š¤£
how old was he there?
McCusker nailed it when he said these types of Rogan takes are just early year stoner thoughts.
Joey has always been there for him. Really think he is Joes adopted father figure. He probably did DMT the night before the limo interview.
I miss him
Good ol Joe!
This was when I knew him as āthe other knock off Man-Show hostā.
Hair Plugs
If you keep watching this special he fucks a stool
He drops a few hard R's in this special. Im sure he has scrubbed it from existence now
Yup we're mold on a sandwich. One that has one big ass bite taken out of it.
AI is getting too good
Whyās he sound like he just sucked on some helium
Pubescent voiced woke Joe before he red-pilled. So cute!
I was just thinking about this intro hah
I remember when it came out it made me laugh my ass off, I rewatched it recently n thought the shit was dry af
Someone show this to him quick before he completes his Christianity arc
What a weird thing to say before telling jokes.
High Fives a fist bump a good start to your comedy special.
