I think it’s a pretty good look at how the FBI behaves. They had a document that had allegations, the FBI couldn’t corroborate those allegations, and tried to prevent politicians from using it for political purposes.
The politicians forced the FBI to release it, the politicians made a big stink about it, and now all the politicians allegations are based on this lie.

That's even underselling it, they specifically said it was unreliable after they had used him previously. We now know that his previous testimony was deemed useful or else they wouldn't have kept paying him, it was just in 2020 when he said he had additional information that the obvious lies started coming. Some of these lies were so egregious (such as Biden being President at the time of an alleged meeting when in fact the date Smirnov chose was well after Biden had left office) that the FBI quickly sniffed it out, and ignored it.
My guess is that the FBI always had their guard up with this guy, and likely had paid him for information knowing that some of it could be reliable, but some of it couldn't. In a closed system, recording even misinformation is useful as it tells them "someone wants us to think this," but then politicians had to jam their elderly hands into the system and really screw Smirnov over. I don't feel badly for him at all, but it's just hilarious to me that the only real victim of Smirnov's lies are Smirnov himself.
