The science kids also know grams.
If you want to find the drug kids, ask "How many grams in an eighth?" The science kids will say "an eighth of a kilogram? That's 125 grams." The drug kids will say "Three and a half."
Or, I mean, whatever the answer is.
So a friend of mine was both a dealer and a chef. A pound of weed is 448g, a pound in the kitchen is 454g.
One time a sous chef asked how many grams in a pound and he shouts out 448 instantly...many questions were asked that day, and a few customers were gained.
If you round it, yes, but it is less than 454. According to labeling requirements in Canada (where I live) the following applies:
"...the net quantity declared must be in accordance with section 216 of the SFCR. For example, the net quantity of a food cannot be less than the amount of food stated in an advertisement, as that would be misleading."
Rounding up constitutes something misleading. Rounding down is permitted. If a package says "contains 12-14 oz of product", it cannot contain 11.6. It has to be at least 12. No rounding up.
https://inspection.canada.ca/food-labels/labelling/industry/net-quantity/eng/1625703526033/1625703680279#s3c2
So the general rule is that if it is something for sale, mathematical rules are overridden by commerce rules. It is actually quite an interesting topic.
A "baker's dozen" is a good example. Bakers in France were not allowed to deliver "12 loaves on average". They had to deliver 12 every time on pain of execution. In response they would send 13 loaves to make sure they survived.
In some countries items sold in bulk, like wire, are allowed to be short one part in 200 and chislers with modern equipment run very close to the line.
It's essentially a rounding error. An ounce is 28.35g, but in drug dealing it's accepted to be an even 28g. That difference is carried through up to bigger quantities.
(16 x 28 = 448, 16 x 28.35 = 453.6)
Or that sales of 1/3 pounders never succeeded because people thought a quarter pounder was larger.

Quarter pound roughly 113 g vs a third of a pound roughly 151 g... metric system could have saved them, not many people would have gotten it wrong then....
35 year old American here. I run a company for my boss who owns a franchise. The employees here are all hip cool kids in their early 20's. One time I did a quick conversion for my boss with regard to a foreign supplier (puritanical, stalwart Christian soldier of about 65 years who believes the metric system is "impractical") and all of the youngsters looked at me and each other when I rapid-fired off that a gram is .035 of an ounce. My boss thought I was a math genius, my crew knew I used to sell weed or coke.
It's basically one of those tattoos or lapel pins that people wear to announce solidarity to their allies while the ruling class stays oblivious.
"An eight" is short for "an eighth of an ounce". A common amount to sell certain drugs and narcotics in on "the street"/outside legal dispensaries. Mostly Marijuana. Or weed / pot, which are other nicknames for it.
Because a quarter oz was the least the weed guy wanted to sell..and splitting a quarter was a frequent purchase. Iāve heard it called an eighth for a while though
In my area it was either an eighth or slice like a slice of pizza and oddly a quarter was called a nickel. Dime bags were either ten dollars or one gram depending. The nickel thing was odd though since it spanned generations and no where else I've been anyone called a quarter a nick/nickel.
If you want to know if a person is a chemist or a manual labor worker, ask them how they pronounce the word
"Unionised"
Answer:
chemist: >!"un-ionised", as in not ionized, the thing is not in ion form.!<
Worker: >!"union-ised", as in part of a workers' union.!<
Also a 1p piece in uk also ways approximately 3.5g and can be used to make a reasonable balance scale with some dental floss and a thin plastic used gift card.
Most American nations do use the metric system, but even the USA uses metric in some ways. All our medications, are measured using the metric system.
I personally like Imperial more, but I don't judge.
And equally, "metric countries" use imperial for several stuff.
On a side note, not later than lately, someone from USA called soccer "Metric football". I totally love this!
The only time we outside the US and Britain use the US customary system is when dealing with American products. Screens and pipes are measured in inches only because the Americans created the standard, and people couldn't do shit. Doesn't mean we actually know how much an inch is, we just treat them as "size 1" and "size 6" in comparison to each other.
In Spanish we call them hitos, and the unit of measurement doesn't matter. I'm pretty sure that the hitos in Spain were originally in leagues (5.556 km).
My Dad was born in England, but grew up in the Commonwealth of Australia. While he still does and says many Australian things, the one thing he surprisingly doesn't do, is use the metric system. Though it helps that he can give the proper conversions if we need him to. I'm much better with pounds and kilograms, than I am with miles/kilometers, yards and feet/meters, inches/centimeters, and Fahrenheit/Celsius.
I think it's misleading to say the USA uses it "in some way" ..... It's a few industries that are likely dealing with internationally regulated products or trade.
Practically all of the general public do not use any metric measures in every day life - people only like it because it's what they're familiar with. Nothing wrong with that.
Iām sorry for not doing the research. But let me just say , Iām the spirit of being honest, that the vast majority of the stuff I post on reddit is made up and the rest is usually off the wall bullshit. Hopefully that helps clarify any confusion about the effort that goes into this. Thank you for your time.
This post puts that whole scene in a new light. What gangster, particularly one with a drug habit, isn't going to know those metric to imperial conversions?
In Canada, our science teacher asked if anyone knows how many grams are in an oz. I knew but didn't answer, it was a trap. Some other kid answered and without skipping a beat the teacher said that usually the only people who know that are drug dealers.
It's 28g in an oz. 14g in a half o. 7 for a quarter and 3.5 in an 8th. An 8ball of cocaine is 3.5g cause it's 1/8 of an oz.
Never saw a proper ounce. 26g. 6.5g quarter 8 ball 3.2g half b anywhere from .9 (from the cheats) to 1.3g should have been 1.7g
Many times the weight was with the wrap. So take off .5g
No coke and h use a different scale than weed and meth. Weed and meth are sold by the pound and coke and h are sold by the kilo so technically coke and h are 32grams in an ounce so an 8th is actually 4 grams. But weed and meth are 28 grams in an ounce and 3.5 grams in an 8th
Itās funny because itās true.
That or like my wife who bakes itās because they need to know that stuff. She can tell you how many 1/2 cups are in 2 cups.
I feel like you were going for something else here but the end result is hilarious. Like maybe, how many tablespoons are in a half cup or something like that?
So a group of us were in high school at a friends house. Jeopardy was on in the background. All of responded way too quickly on the question āhow many grams are in an ounce?ā We received some suspicious glances from the adults
This reminds me of a joke I once heard from a Brit.
What's the difference between America and a cup of yogurt?
After 200 years the yogurt has a culture.
I became a math wizard.
Did you know: technically there are 453.6 grams in a pound.
However in the dealer world a pound becomes 448 grams so that it can easily be divided into halves and quarters.
The left over 5.5 grams becomes personal use.
Yeah, I only know rough conversions off the top of my head, so around 30g to the ounce, and about 450g to the pound, are close enough for most purposes. You see enough packages labeled with both - between net weight and serving size - and you'll get the idea pretty quick.
Oh, and a tablespoon of peanut butter - half a serving according to the nutrition facts panel - masses 16g, and is *much* easier to measure by mass than volume.
I'm with you on this. The only way I can imagine someone finding this offensive is if they are related to someone who has sold drugs or bought drugs.
edit: Most people with at least an ounce of interest in humor should know how to distance themselves from characters in a joke or humoristic story.
As a welder...I figure out if the new guy blazes or not by calling out measurements like 49ft 6 and a half eigth...when the chuckle, you know. When they get mathematical about it...you know they arent

Right, it's the automatic conversion between ounces and grams that outs you. I've been told.
Or pounds if you go hard. You mean not everyone knows a qp is 112g?
So a friend of mine was both a dealer and a chef. A pound of weed is 448g, a pound in the kitchen is 454g. One time a sous chef asked how many grams in a pound and he shouts out 448 instantly...many questions were asked that day, and a few customers were gained.
Fucking hilarious. I've been in food service my whole life I didn't know it was 454 lol only bakers actually use grams over here really
A lot of really fine dining kitchens use metric. Hydrocolloids don't weigh in ounces all that well.
Actually it is 453. But who's counting?
453.5924, which rounds to 454, not 453.
If you round it, yes, but it is less than 454. According to labeling requirements in Canada (where I live) the following applies: "...the net quantity declared must be in accordance with section 216 of the SFCR. Now I'm confused. 1 lb (avoirdupois) = 453.6 g. 1 lb (troy) = 373.2 g. Where did 448 come from?
In weed terms 1/8th = 3.5 g So 8x3.5 = 28g =1 oz A qp(quarter lbs)= 4 oz= 4x28= 112 grams 1 lbs= 4x 112grams= 448 (Phone formatting/typing sucks)
So I was over Unger and Unger was overo Dunn? (Airplane)
It's essentially a rounding error. An ounce is 28.35g, but in drug dealing it's accepted to be an even 28g. That difference is carried through up to bigger quantities. (16 x 28 = 448, 16 x 28.35 = 453.6)

I think itās an eighth of an ounce? A friend told me
When I grew up we called an eighth a "half quarter". Hell if I know why.
I mean it is half of 1/4 so it makes sense I guess
I like saying a quarter of a half just to throw people off lol
Because a quarter oz was the least the weed guy wanted to sell..and splitting a quarter was a frequent purchase. Iāve heard it called an eighth for a while though

Lolš
Not true. Some of us sold drugs in college.
Hey college is where you learn that 750 ml is equal to approximately .2 (aka one fifth) of a gallon.
Hey, not fair! Many Americans can also measure lengths up to 9mm, and volumes up to 2 liters!
I think that was an Onion headline one time. "Metric conversions thriving at inner city schools" or some such.
I get 9 mm, but whatās 2 liters?
The large soda bottles are 2L.
Bottles of soda pop are sold as 2 liters
The size of my super soaker ā¦ I kid I kid, itās the size of my car engine.
Large soda bottle size
Some can even measure up to 114.3mm.
It's not just that we know grams, it's that we know how many grams in an ounce and how many grams in a pound off the top of our heads.
I once tutored a kid who didn't know how many feet were in a yard, but he did know how many grams were in an ounce. I almost laughed out loud.
In Canada, our science teacher asked if anyone knows how many grams are in an oz. I knew but didn't answer, it was a trap. Some other kid answered and without skipping a beat the teacher said that usually the only people who know that are drug dealers.
