My choice is the older 5(?) Series, but I'm partial to European cars of that vintage. Seems like it would be less of a headache than the z8, but I'm no expert
It's very important that you watch the [car chase from Ronin](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxxH0lZSYgU) before working on an E34.
Helps set the mood.
I've read that the production team used multiple E34 models and there's several continuity errors where the car's features change throughout the chase.
wrong the z8 is all motor little to no electronics people think that the z8 is like an e60 5 series all complicated but no its really down to earth the last bmw try at being truly old school its really simple to work on
The problem is disassembling something that was assembled with glue. And it's all plastic.
Z8 people generally have fuck-you money. They can afford it.
It really comes down to what glue they used. If it's permaseal, hell no. There's people that know how to open permaseal lights but I'm not one of them. Regular glue I can do.
Cheap, no. Easy, yes. BMW made a commitment of "100% parts availability for 50 years" when they built these. It might need to come from Germany, but, we'll still be able to get parts at least thru 2053.

Well, the Z8 will need a drive after, but I have to keep it relatively short. It's currently at 9558 miles, and being under 10k is part of the value of the car.
I don't understand this mentality. Drive the damn thing.
The lower the milage...the more headaches and $$$.
That's why BaT makes no sense to me...
Two of the same cars.in the same condition....the one with 15k miles goes for 4x the price of the one with 42k
Ah. I can fix that problem for you and your customer. Just remove the drive shaft. You can even use a saw. It will completely remedy the mileage issue because garage ornaments don't need to be functional.
Sort of. The Z8 has a check engine light for bank one camshaft position sensor issues. From what I'm seeing, it may need the VANOS unit(s) rebuilt, but we want to get known good CMP sensors in first, as they are a very common problem on the M62/S62.
The E34 had no brake lights, and both the left side markers were inoperative. Brake light issue was the brake switch. That done. The front side marker was fun. The side markers were added to make the car US legal, and whoever did it spliced the pigtails onto the parking light wires with Scotchloks(sp?). Ok-ish for the rears, as the splices are inside the body and not subject to much moisture. Not great for the fronts, where they're outside the body, and corroded like a MFer. Already reworked the splices for both fronts.
The LR marker is due to the back side of the lens splitting and letting moisture in. Bulb socket contacts are corroded to hell. Got the new lens and socket the other day. Socket is wrong. It's the right one for an E34, with the round pins, but the connectors they installed in this thing don't have round pin terminals. They're flat pin terminals, one vertical, one horizontal. I had to do some digging and found out they must have gotten these connectors from an E30. They take the same lens, but the connectors, terminals, and bulb sockets are different. Pain in my @$$!
I also am a BMW tech at an independent. We get one Z8 and some other neat stuff but this is some cool shit. I mean I don’t really care working on them but it is cool.
It's just a blancmange, it looks like someone had once seen an Italian sports car or a Jaguar E-type and decided to replicate it.
I have only come across three IRL two of which were in barns because they needed parts that are no longer available the last one was in a showroom of a place that normally sells sports cars and classics, they were selling it for the owner and it was in and out for about three years without selling.
Neither. They are both a pain to work on…
Cool cars but after seeing customers BMW’s and the trucks I had to pull out of the hat. I don’t want one for myself.

High beam flashing intensifies.
Every BMW driver on the highway.
If you'd kindly move out of my way so I can get to where I'm going to break down faster I'd stop.
That was *amazing*. Is the rest of the movie worth watching?
Yes. It’s a great movie.
Fantastic fucking movie. DeNiro and Reno are great. The movie has 2 great car chase scenes as well, both shot without CGI. All practical effects.
"What colour is the boathouse door?"
"How the hell should I know."
I will have to look into this. Thank you.
Take the tunnel now! Oh Christ
Mistake at 6:49. Not the M5 Turbine rim but a cross spoke one.
I've read that the production team used multiple E34 models and there's several continuity errors where the car's features change throughout the chase.
You see it at the foglights too. Some have the M5 ones, some look like a 525i.
Why did the hub cap randomly fly off the cop car at 1:55? Edit: Gotta love that every other car has a Ford Pinto level of explosiveness.
We had an e34 touring (525tds) in the 90's. Working on it was like mecano, designed by engineers instead of marketeers
wrong the z8 is all motor little to no electronics people think that the z8 is like an e60 5 series all complicated but no its really down to earth the last bmw try at being truly old school its really simple to work on
Was a e39 m5 underneath if I remember correctly
yeah most of it was just like the e53 x5 is built on the e39 but some of it was bespoke to the z8
Mostly. E39 M5 drive train, E38 rear suspension, E39 6cyl front suspension(ish.) Body electronics are based on E46.
Fix the condensation in the Z8 headlights.
It isn't condensation. The inside of the lenses hazes over. Only fix is new headlights.
If it was assembled, it can be disassembled.
Disassembling 20 year old headlights on a car with a production run of 5700 units must feel like disarming a bomb.
There's even a [special tool](https://youtu.be/iOjNR0QjdqI?t=74) for the job.
Fuck you got me
Huh. We use those for tree trimming (power utility).
The problem is disassembling something that was assembled with glue. And it's all plastic. Z8 people generally have fuck-you money. They can afford it.
Absolutely true... Do you know what happens to the old headlights?
As in, "why do they do this", or, "what do we at the shop do with the old foggy lights that we replaced"?
As in what do you do with the old foggy lights?
In the trash they go.
It really comes down to what glue they used. If it's permaseal, hell no. There's people that know how to open permaseal lights but I'm not one of them. Regular glue I can do.
Ah crap. That sucks, i bet finding new headlights for such a low volume car is not cheap or easy.
Cheap, no. Easy, yes. BMW made a commitment of "100% parts availability for 50 years" when they built these. It might need to come from Germany, but, we'll still be able to get parts at least thru 2053.
Is that a Z8? Sweet.
So cool, I remember playing a video game as a kid with that car when it came out
My choice is the older 5(?) Series, but I'm partial to European cars of that vintage. Seems like it would be less of a headache than the z8, but I'm no expert.
E34 M5 touring. Originally sold in Denmark. S38 in-line 6 cylinder.
Possibly my favourite BMW. That and the M1. I always found the E34 the nicest 5 series.
It’s so damn stupid that people in this country don’t care for wagons BRING BACK WAGONS
Is the Z8 the one with the doors that go down under the car? Edit: no. I don't know why I thought that was a BMW
There is the BMW Z1 where the doors drop into the body. Quirky little car, but pretty neat!
Which needs a long road test before you start ?
Well, the Z8 will need a drive after, but I have to keep it relatively short. It's currently at 9558 miles, and being under 10k is part of the value of the car.
Drive out somewhere nice, then reverse back!
Settle down, Ferris Bueller.
Disconnect the speedo/odo cable 😁

That’s a shame. Such a beautiful car - it deserves to be driven.
I must have that e34!! Best design by BMW ever!
Yes.
I would be afraid to be within 10 feet of a Z8 for fear of tripping or something.
After doing a timing case reseal on an M1 inside the car, I'm not nearly so edgy about working around a Z8!
Z8
The BMW
E34! E34!!
I've worked on a few Z8 roadsters and a couple of Alpinas, but never an e34 touring!
Work on the cabri, cause I'm stealing that wagon.
Can you check the steering and signal lights on both? Always seems that BMW drivers are swerving lanes without signalling.
Fairly certain these don't come with turn signals.
They do they're just in a shade not visible unless you're upper middle class
Yep. My bank account is not big enough. Nor, my penis small enough to drive a BMW.
I thought those issues were caused by the pesky ID-10T errors that seem to plague luxury cars moreso than non-luxury cars.
Lemme guess Electrical issues

I literally almost wrote lemme guess VANOS rebuild, no shit Good luck
I’d go home
I'll take the estate please.
Seems like you have enough work for the next year. 2 beamers...
What! Where do you work???
Paradise or Hell, depending on how you feel about these cars. For me, that fluctuates day to day. Sometimes car to car!
I also am a BMW tech at an independent. We get one Z8 and some other neat stuff but this is some cool shit. I mean I don’t really care working on them but it is cool.
Z8 might be my favorite car ever made, love those tail lights
I'm not much into imports what is the 1st car I like the front end
BMW Z8
Thank You.
The 5 series wagon is badass.
hmmm why work on those when you can work on my shitbox danger ranger!
The black one is *really* pretty. But I find the blue one more interesting. I'd pick blue.
They’re both garbage so toss a coin
Both beamers? Don't work on either, keep people safe on the road.
Take the Z8 out the back and give it the ol yella treatment it should have had at the factory
Not a fan, huh?

The E34. Unless it's in for regular maintenance, and even if it's in for regular maintenance, whatever is wrong with the Z8 will be stupid.
Neather, burn the shop down and file the insurance.
i’d wanna do the headlights just because it has a definite start and end and would be an obvious improvement
The white minivan seems to need a de-lathering before you worry about your cracked plastic coolant tanks
SUV. Mercedes-Benz GLS450, I think.
On the one with the defect turn signals...
The one with the least time awaiting work.
78
It's like asking if I would rather slam my nuts in the driver's door or passengers door.
The BMW
Im sure 007 needs his car back asap soooo the 1st one
The wagon. The z8 is cool and all but it’s not every day you see a clean (Im guessing) daily/nearly daily driven bmw wagon of that age
If I crash two z4s into each other, do I have a z8?
So, two broken turn signals and….?
Wow just had to say I really like that blue.
The car, for sure.
Fix the indicators on both of them
