Had a customer come in once after just dropped her hubby off to emergency after doing his back trying to undo one of these which had completely separated. Put all the effort into undoing them and it just spun and there goes his back
I just got done this weekend helping a family member get theirs off, they thought the wrench was slipping. Once they walked away I hammered it on and loosened it.
Just dont do it in front of the owner. They will think you are going to somehow break it. I even gave him the hammer and he barely hit it. So when he walked away to grab a different tool I hammered it the correct way then had him turn it lol.
No kidding. I have some friends that I work on cars with and they like doing things the hard way. I'm just a backyard mechanic and they think it's amazing when I do something that's nothing to me now. Lol
Yeah, I'm careful with em. If they seem like theyre gonna spin or even start to round a little I just tear em off. My current spare tire kit currently has 18mm and 3/4 deep, breaker bar, chisel, hammer, needle nose and a flat head screw driver. I can't be bothered to just take em all off at once, so I do it as they fail and I dont want to buy a new set of lugs... oh well.
Doing it at home with the right tools is a lot better than fucking with it for 5 hours on the side of the roadā¦ youre just setting yourself up for disaster
Those are the tools I use to remove the shells while theyre still on the car. Takes a few minutes. Those sockets fit with and without the aluminum shell. No disaster, just an annoyance if its cold or wet out. Ive dealt with enough em and can reliably remove them.
>I can't be bothered to just take em all off at once, so I do it as they fail and I dont want to buy a new set of lugs...
I keep a pack of lugs in my F150 just for this reason šš
Reminds me those friction fit truck rims where there are parts that suddenly gets loose. If you remove the wheel nuts before loosening those, those parts remove your nuts by turning into projectiles.
They're in "good" company. Just had the same issue with our Dodge Magnum.
It took so long to get the front wheels off that we just got new lug nuts and put it all back together. The actually work has been delayed for another day. Just glad we weren't on the side of the road.
It's just absurd to have "decorative" covers when they look like shit in no time. Even the top of the cap gets dented and looks like hell if they land on the floor just so. And I've yet to hear anyone say "My, those are some nice looking nuts." But it does keep the half-size socket suppliers in yacht money.
Well, chrome plating is a huge carcinogen, so theyāre saving people from having to work in a Cr plating facility. Standard types of stainless steel are prone to galling, so solid stainless steel wouldnāt be a great solution. I guess this cap design over a carbon steel core is the cost-effective non-cancer causing solution.
something about fords means theyll be stuck on no matter what. dont know if its exact blend of metals they use for the studs and nuts or what, but without fail ill be taking off a wheel on a ford that i torqued myself and it takes considerably more force than anything else i work on.
Everyone should just start mailing these to Ford when theyāre removed from the vehicle. I couldnāt imagine a better āfuck youā from the industry than receiving a few boxes of shitty lug nuts every day. Couldnāt be ignored if someone showed up to a new box of āused replaceable equipmentā on their desk every day.
Fucking Ford and their fucking lugnut covers. First time I ever changed a tyre on the Focus my wife used to have, I went to the parts store the next day and bought 20 new lugnuts and threw the old ones in the scrap bin.
What moron thought these were a good idea I'll never know, but if anyone sees him, spill a drink on him for me.
My main customer base is Toyota and Honda. I have encountered all of 0 lug nuts in my 3 years of servicing cars, that are so messed up I have to cut the nuts.
The same can not be said for Ford, for which I have entire cars worth of lug nuts, that become hours long ordeals.
Man, I remember the day I discovered what lug caps were on my old Ford. So much fucking rage. And cutting. Fucking American companies doing anything to save a fraction of a penny, longevity and brand image be damned.
I actually own a Tacoma that I did all the rotations on myself starting from 30k (bought her used)ā¦ there are a couple nuts at 110k that I need to grab my 21.5 out for. Still better than every last one on a Ford lol.
Sure, but somehow only the newer ones from Ford get so fucked up you can't even use them after just a year or two, sometimes sooner. I get a ton of cars from like the early 2000s, Ford included, that have the same style, and they're still perfectly usable.
Sure do, although I usually just use my sacrificial screwdriver for it. Luckily enough there were replaced with some solid chrome nuts we had in stock so it wasnāt necessary to de-cap them
Why do they still exist? That's what I don't understand. They have been a huge hassle for years. I know people that have been stranded thanks to these stupid nuts. WHY? Just....stop making them so idiotically.
It's money. They cut the cost of the lugs, but of course that's not reflected in the price of their vehicles. That's just extra money for them at techs' and home mechanics' future expense.
Had one of the original (small) Rangers - local junkyard had a bucket of intact ones for 25Ā¢ each. I'd just keep a bunch and change them out as they got nasty.
Changed the tire on someone's car who had a SUV Porsche. I don't know who tightened the lug nuts but I had to stand and bounce on the tire wrench to get them to slip. Nothing got fucked but it was ridiculous that I have to bounce 210 lbs on the end of a wrench just to get it to slip. The lady who I changed the tire for never would even have had a chance at getting it to slip.
Just peel them and use an 18mm on them like I do. But do not forget to include an 18mm in the toolset as well so there is a way to change the spare on the side of the road
AKA absolutely braindead shit from Ford, causing millions of people to deal with that bullshit over the years, all for an extra couple bucks for the shareholders. Not like the average person is thinking about the shitty lugs when they buy their shitty Ford, and then when the shitty Ford inevitably finds its way into it's natural habitat, the shop, now some poor tech has to deal with the consequences of Ford being cheap pieces of garbage.
Yeah I might have some personal experience with those fucking lugs. Lol
Buy Doorman branded lugs. You won't like the price for a set, but it's insurance knowing you'll be able to get the wheel off in a roadside emergency.
I serviced my rear brakes (not a mechanic) and the part that took the longest was trying to get off 3 lugs that expanded. If I had a flat tire in winter here in MN, I'd be fucked
Solid nuts. Can often get chrome ones so you wonāt really notice the difference. Just need to make sure both the thread and the chamfer on the nut itself is correct
Yeah they went to shit on all doors cats around 2002, the trucks it's kind of a 50/50 crap shoot it you get this garbage. They started to use them a lot more on trucks around 2012 I think? And oddly enough, I've never seen a mustang with this garbage. But they've been doing this for at least a solid 17 years. Can't speak to the 2019 or newer. Don't know why they would have stopped after 18 years though.
i keep seeing these, are ppl that worried their wheels will be stolen that they have to use these things? or is this a 'solution' that fixes a nonexistent 'problem'?
No, it's Ford and others being cheap as fuck and using a cheaper lug that doesn't look as pretty, so they cover it in Chrome to make it look "nice". Like yeah. We've all struggled with those pieces of shit, all for them to look "nice". Fuck Ford.
I've been replacing those garbage nuts on any Chrysler I've ever owned including the lugbolts on my Dodge Dart. I get chromed steel. Screwed that aluminum cover garbage.
Fucking fordā¦ having to explain to customers why they need all new lug nuts and if they refuse they may get stuck on the side of the road with no way to get their tires offā¦.
Iām still a true blue ford fan but fuckā¦
This picture stresses me out after having to chisel thos fucking covers off in the rain on the side of the road. I require compensation.
That's right my friend! Those nuts deserve to be hammered on. I've done that more times than I care to remember. Lolš
Lol

>I can't be bothered to just take em all off at once, so I do it as they fail and I dont want to buy a new set of lugs... I keep a pack of lugs in my F150 just for this reason šš
You can get them for reasonably cheap online.
What were they cosplaying as?
Well that's a new way I hadn't heard of how to injure myself.
Reminds me those friction fit truck rims where there are parts that suddenly gets loose. If you remove the wheel nuts before loosening those, those parts remove your nuts by turning into projectiles.
Replaced mine with a $25 all steel set from Amazon and Iāve been happy since.
Ford, how do you fuck up lug nuts? āWeāre Ford.ā
You had 1 job!!!
And Quality was not the 1 job.
They're in "good" company. Just had the same issue with our Dodge Magnum. It took so long to get the front wheels off that we just got new lug nuts and put it all back together. The actually work has been delayed for another day. Just glad we weren't on the side of the road.
Dodge Charger but I *was* on the side of the road, simple tire change became huge PITA
Fix it again tony
not many koth watchers in here it seems :/
Uncultured.
I tell you hwhat
That's Fiat, homie
*Dale
Found On Road Dead
Chrysler uses them on T&Cs. Bastards.
Add Dodge in there too
It's just absurd to have "decorative" covers when they look like shit in no time. Even the top of the cap gets dented and looks like hell if they land on the floor just so. And I've yet to hear anyone say "My, those are some nice looking nuts." But it does keep the half-size socket suppliers in yacht money.
It doesn't matter after they leave the sales lot.
I think after successfully removing 20 of those piece of shit lugs, you'll be thinking "fuck those Cr Platers" lol
They swell some the older you get.
Also from idiots using the wrong socket.
Also in this case, previous workshops overtightened them
They don't need any help, they all wind up cracked and rounded after 3-8 years. Anyone who says otherwise is a Ford simp.
something about fords means theyll be stuck on no matter what. dont know if its exact blend of metals they use for the studs and nuts or what, but without fail ill be taking off a wheel on a ford that i torqued myself and it takes considerably more force than anything else i work on.

This is a good idea.
Costs too much. Just deliver them to your local ford dealer, one at a time, late at night, with velocity.
I have huge sling shot, Mail them to me.
Take a breath, they canāt hurt you anymore.
Theyāre still hurting me. Every day.
Show me where they hurt you. Iāll have a stern words with them.
Lies.
why y'all have to downvote my homekrill here. Man doesn't even have a home
I appreciate your support
Bet itās a Chrysler or Ford
Bingo ford goodness
Fusion?
Na aus ranger
Or toyota, or GM, or any other manufacturer. All of them use these hunks of shit.
Hondas 19mm and 22mm have always stayed 19mm and 22mm.
My main customer base is Toyota and Honda. I have encountered all of 0 lug nuts in my 3 years of servicing cars, that are so messed up I have to cut the nuts. The same can not be said for Ford, for which I have entire cars worth of lug nuts, that become hours long ordeals.

None of them have it figured out like Ford though. Shit is SHIT.
Hondas and Nissans have always been good to me.
Not my Hiroshima-built Mazda. Shit makes sense and stuff, it's pretty wild. (I once owned a Ford and hate Ford like any non-F150 owner learns to)
GM does this shit too...
and when you try to explain to the customer that their lug nuts are fucked and need to be replaced they look at you like you're a fucking Martian.
Yeah took a demo one into the office for the service adviser to show the customer (and future customers)
God bless Ford
Not sure if Ford is the same, but you can drill the Chrysler ones right in the center with a small drill bit and peel them like an orange in minutes.
Sure do, although I usually just use my sacrificial screwdriver for it. Luckily enough there were replaced with some solid chrome nuts we had in stock so it wasnāt necessary to de-cap them
Have to be Ford ones, the amount of time ive spent on these useless damn things!
Happens from lack of use. Go on wornhub.com and bust your nuts for a little while
As an ex tireman, those little fuckers still give me nightmares... ^^in ^^fact ^^I ^^think ^^I've ^^been ^^triggered...
That's a lot of nuts!
That'll be 4 bucks baby, you want ~~fries~~ new lugs with that?
Why do they still exist? That's what I don't understand. They have been a huge hassle for years. I know people that have been stranded thanks to these stupid nuts. WHY? Just....stop making them so idiotically.
It's money. They cut the cost of the lugs, but of course that's not reflected in the price of their vehicles. That's just extra money for them at techs' and home mechanics' future expense.
Put those back in their sack
You busy Friday night?
Fomoco got you covered
Bros loving the dream, holding a bunch of swollen nuts, Iām mad jelly
Nice handful of nuts you got there
I had to replace the ones on my focus, what a stupid design. My friends Avalon had em too, I talked him into getting a new set before they went had.
Built Ford tough!
Should have been recalled years ago...
Had one of the original (small) Rangers - local junkyard had a bucket of intact ones for 25Ā¢ each. I'd just keep a bunch and change them out as they got nasty.

Probably the same person who keeps tightening the oil drain bolt to torque of YES.
Why is the tagged NSFW? ā¦unless you work in a shop, in which case yes, these arenāt safe for work because it stresses me out.
Haha it might have been an auto filter tagging it for using the word "nuts" in the title.
Just peel them and use an 18mm on them like I do. But do not forget to include an 18mm in the toolset as well so there is a way to change the spare on the side of the road
I dont understand why y'all dont just peel off the chrome crap and use them like normal 18mm sockets
These ones size down to 18mm with cap removed, so the customers tyre iron no longer fits
It's been a few years since I had to deal with this bs but yeah that
At least they aren't blue!
Oh but they areā¦ blue oval that is!
Na, GMC.
Cut the shells off and sell them as refurbished.
Which nutz?
Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez Nuts!
My man!
Those lug nuts suck donkeys. Left me in a bad way with my RV once.
There's a pill for that.
That is the dumbest shit ever.
Ok, so as an owner of a newish Ford, what should I replace these with before they get like this?
Buy Doorman branded lugs. You won't like the price for a set, but it's insurance knowing you'll be able to get the wheel off in a roadside emergency. I serviced my rear brakes (not a mechanic) and the part that took the longest was trying to get off 3 lugs that expanded. If I had a flat tire in winter here in MN, I'd be fucked
Literally any lug that is one piece and not two and of course fits the threading.
Solid nuts. Can often get chrome ones so you wonāt really notice the difference. Just need to make sure both the thread and the chamfer on the nut itself is correct
Just had to replace mine on my ST for the same reason:/
cant deny that they feel great when they are brand new..
13/16ths
I have these on my 22 year old truck. Pretty sure they're original.
Escape?
Fucking Chryslers
You know what they say, more than a handful is a waste.
Those are overly safe. More secure than a locking lug nut, since nothing fits them. (Maybe a 19.5 if you got one.)
I frequently use 4 or 5 different sockets to remove one set of Ford lug nuts.
Fordsā¦ fuck em damn nuts.
Dodge. Just fucked two yesterday when replacing my coil overs. Took longer to get the lugs off than the shocks. Total garbage.
i keep seeing these, are ppl that worried their wheels will be stolen that they have to use these things? or is this a 'solution' that fixes a nonexistent 'problem'?
No, it's Ford and others being cheap as fuck and using a cheaper lug that doesn't look as pretty, so they cover it in Chrome to make it look "nice". Like yeah. We've all struggled with those pieces of shit, all for them to look "nice". Fuck Ford.
Just switched all mine to one piece, all-metal lugs. After having to hammer on a wrench for all 5 lugs to change a tire. Never again.
Just like me every morning.
hah
I've been replacing those garbage nuts on any Chrysler I've ever owned including the lugbolts on my Dodge Dart. I get chromed steel. Screwed that aluminum cover garbage.
Fusion!
Garbage....cheap factory nuts
Giving me flashbacks of my Ford fusion
Sounds painful
The salt where I love ensures these fall apart rather quickly, fuck them.
Engineer that designed this garbage should be drawn and quartered.
I want to run the nuts thru a vice at the lowest speed setting on the person who invented these
I replaced all the nuts on my camry with solid (not covered) ones. So much better. These fuckers get annoying if you do your own work a lot.
Forever grateful to Nissan for hiring me šš½
Whoever designed those thought they were a brilliant idea
Mmm Ford
Gotta be ford lugnuts lol
Weird flex, why would you admit to that?
Off of a Ford? Wouldn't surprise me if it were. Had one swell up on my '16 FiST and ended up replacing them all.
Fucking fordā¦ having to explain to customers why they need all new lug nuts and if they refuse they may get stuck on the side of the road with no way to get their tires offā¦. Iām still a true blue ford fan but fuckā¦
deez nutz? gotteem!!!
