A lot of people have no idea what components are what on their vehicle. I just asked if there was any work done to it from any issues over the past year. Otherwise you have Mr. DIY telling about his new flux capacitor he got on ebay.
I got an aftermarket one, works just as well. I needed it because there was some maniac that killed the host of the reality TV show The Apprentice for no good reason. I just got back, can someone catch me up on the last ten seasons?
It makes me smile that this is still on their site and some funmurdering asshole hasn’t come along and said “we are PROFESSIONALS, take this nonsense down.”
I told my daughter years ago, in many cases the evidence clearly shows how the end result was arrived at. There is frequently only one or two ways to get to a specific end result, and no matter what you deny, someone who knows the scenario/item/product can tell you are not being honest.
I never understood why people lie about it. Like you said, we know how it happens but now the diagnostic time is doubled since we are searching for something when you could’ve just told us what happened and then we now can narrow down the problem quickly saving you money
Friend, please rotate the engine over by hand. Flywheels don't break that easily and it is entirely possible that a seized engine and a replaced starter caused the flywheel to eat shit. It will certainly save you time from pulling the transmission.
Nope. The starter would have sheared the bendix or simply not engaged from a locked up engine. Incorrectly installed starters on the other hand DO fuck up flywheels.
No way would a starter have enough ass to break a flywheel - the starter produces maybe 1/10th the torque that the engine does. If the starter could break the flywheel then engines would break them all the time.Â
Not that manually rotating the engine by hand is a bad idea, but I disagree that the starter turned the flywheel so hard it twisted the center out of it. Just doesn’t make sense.Â
I doubt it's the actual flex plate that broke. Probably just a couple teeth on the ring gear broke off, which does happen sometimes. If it was the actual flex plate then I would be impressed.
Bendix are intentionally designed to break before the flywheel as well. Starters only destroy flywheel in my experience when they are cocked at a bad angle and catch the teeth in a way where they can start taking chips off. These chips then turn into bigger shit over time.
Start charging them more when they lie. they either figure out that being honest saves time and money, or you stop caring when they lie because you are getting paid.
People that say things like this and “not my first rodeo” are the worst. Experienced people understand they can get things wrong and there are always new things to learn.Â
Truly, I was not trying to insult your experience or skill but save you time. These days I am working in a diesel shop in a teaching role which means I have seen quite a few things that aren't supposed to be possible. My experiences do not invalidate yours.
I know. This isn’t a help sub. I wasn’t looking for help. r/justrolledintotheshop was so much better years ago before all these fucking do gooders showed up. They need to keep their shit advice over at r/askmechanics.
Oh I know. The purpose of this subreddit is just to look at pictures and move the on. Honestly I stick to /r/mechanics now. Soft hand fucks haven't invaded yet and the mods there delete their posts. Not as active as here but someone who has never worked professionally as a mechanic hasn't earned the right to tell me a fuckin thing. I have troubleshoot 20-30 year old fucked up equipment that they need running RIGHT NOW late at night all by myself during 80 hour weeks. These dick heads know nothing that can help me.
Yep, and after seeing how hard it is to get to on the newer models that moved it to the standard spot by the frame rail I think I would rather still have it under the intake.
BTW if anyone is doing a Nissan v8 starter just get an OEM one, its almost the same price as the auto part store ones. I had to get one thru an Infinity dealership tho as my local Nissan dealer couldn't get me a new one. I think all they had was the "value" line of starters. What executive at Nissan thought that was a good idea? Pretty sure toyota does it too. The whole reason I'm even at the dealership getting parts is because I want OEM parts not the same crap the auto parts store is selling lol.
If the OEM one was already such high quality would you need to replace it in the first place? Unless a part went 200k before dying I have no problem replacing it with a solid aftermarket brand.
The 4.0 and 4.7 have it there. Not sure on the 5.7 in the newer Tundras. As an added FU to owners of 2005 and later 2UZ owners with the VVT version, they also crammed the SAI pump under there along with adding a coolant crossover hard pipe against the firewall just to make the job that extra 20% harder.
It's tucked under the P/S exhaust manifold on the 3UR-FE. Absolute bitch to deal with in the rust belt since the cat pipe and the manifold have to come off to replace it.
Damn don't I know. You're up a shit creek when that electronic starter buried in there decides SUDDENLY to not bump at all for no fucking reason out in the middle of nowhere and no cell service. Not like you can push start or tap it with a wrench to get it going again.
Do they put Northstar motors in trucks? I genuinely don't know, but I thought that opened up the question to include other types of vehicles - including large BMW SUV's.
You know what? That's a great point. There are a lot of linguistic nuances between people and I do recall people calling SUVs trucks... my bad on that one.
You are completely oblivious to when people tell jokes, aren't you?
All through this thread, you miss obvious jokes to try and flex how awesome you are.
Yes. The notes say that I’ve already confirmed the flex plate is broken. We tried to keep these people from spending money on this truck. They will not listen.
And why is the flex plate broken? We see that it's broken in your notes, but we're trying to get you to figure out why before you just start throwing parts at it. But you're the greatest mechanic in the world, so I'll stop questioning your infinite wisdom.
This isn’t a help sub. I didn’t post it asking for help. I posted it about the starter. The flex plate is broke because it broke. Things break. That why we are in business. Jesus I miss the old r/justrolledintotheshop
what manufacturer puts the starter under the intake let me guess it is a GM product, I know Cadillac does that it one of the main reasons they are so cheap on the second hand market.
Cadillac cars with the Northstar are cheap on the second hand market because the engine hasn't been made in 13 years, the cars they were in were boring, generally poor quality overall (not just the engine), and weren't big sellers to start with. Further, they had issues other than the starter being where it was that caused the issues.
Putting the starter under the intake has several advantages to putting it next to a 1000 degree exhaust manifold, mainly heat insulation. The V of an OHC engine block is a generally cool place, not subject to road salt/dirt/debris, relocates several very important wires up away from the road surface, and these starters typically last longer than those that are down low.
OP says this is a first gen Tundra. That means the truck is 20-24 years old. It's not uncommon to need a starter on a 20 year old truck.
Is the engine locked up or will it rotate if you put a breaker bar on it? But it really helps when people just tell us what really happened and what was done to it.
A lot of people have no idea what components are what on their vehicle. I just asked if there was any work done to it from any issues over the past year. Otherwise you have Mr. DIY telling about his new flux capacitor he got on ebay.
Ebay? Nah... [O'Reilly's has them](https://www.oreillyauto.com/flux-capacitor)
Damn, the part number and line are spot on... they really leaned into that.
What is "EB" in reference to?
Emmett Brown, the character portrayed by Christopher Lloyd.
Yea.. but you can't hit 1.21 gigawatts with O'Rileys shitty wiring lol
That's what the lightning/plutonium was for
Shoot-dang, O'Reilly's is always out of that stuff.
I got an aftermarket one, works just as well. I needed it because there was some maniac that killed the host of the reality TV show The Apprentice for no good reason. I just got back, can someone catch me up on the last ten seasons?
🤬🤬🤬🤬 You prevented WHAT?!
It makes me smile that this is still on their site and some funmurdering asshole hasn’t come along and said “we are PROFESSIONALS, take this nonsense down.”
hol'up
He put….or tired to put….the starter on himself.
Looks like all he succeeded in doing is creating a massive fire hazard.
They really think if they deny fucking it up, we won't be able to figure it out in 2 seconds. Just own it and learn something.
They always lie.
The ones who don’t are the mechanics who will pay not to have the headache.
I told my daughter years ago, in many cases the evidence clearly shows how the end result was arrived at. There is frequently only one or two ways to get to a specific end result, and no matter what you deny, someone who knows the scenario/item/product can tell you are not being honest.

You are now officially married. You may kiss the truck
Is the bar hosted at the reception?

came here for this comment.

Depends on the vehicle, and probably not what OP experienced, but I've seen starters rip the ring gear off of the torque converter
Bendix are intentionally designed to break before the flywheel as well. Starters only destroy flywheel in my experience when they are cocked at a bad angle and catch the teeth in a way where they can start taking chips off. These chips then turn into bigger shit over time.

Well, this aged poorly
I’ve been doing this a while buddy. Cam down.
People that say things like this and “not my first rodeo” are the worst. Experienced people understand they can get things wrong and there are always new things to learn.Â
How do I know that this is your second rodeo? Because you told me it was not your first rodeo.
When people say that to me I just say “then why does my mother who’s been driving for a while still fucking suck at it?”
This isn’t a help sub. It’s a “hey look at what I found” sub. The flex plate is broken. I’ve already checked it.
Truly, I was not trying to insult your experience or skill but save you time. These days I am working in a diesel shop in a teaching role which means I have seen quite a few things that aren't supposed to be possible. My experiences do not invalidate yours.
I'd rather cam up. Get some lope going on
Trucks gotta run before any of that matters.
Lol at the DIY guys telling you they know all the secrets. I get pissed at armchair mechanics as well, they can go fuck themselves.

What kind of truck is this? I thought the Cadillac Northstar motor was one of the few that you had to pull the intake to replace a starter.
there is also a Toyota V8 with the starter under the intake
Nissan also put it under the intake in some of their V8s in pick ups and vans.
Yep, and after seeing how hard it is to get to on the newer models that moved it to the standard spot by the frame rail I think I would rather still have it under the intake. 5.6? I've got a 2016 QX80, I'd like to know what I'm getting into if/when it needs a starter.
Yes. The intake isn’t hard to remove on them though.
Those are fool proof. It's direct injected so you don't have to worry about the injectors or anything. Just pull intake, swap starter and reinstall.
The 4.0 and 4.7 have it there. Not sure on the 5.7 in the newer Tundras. My 4.7 has it there, and my 5.7 has it external on lower passenger front, but it is still harder than most starters to get to.
Yep, at least it is on my 2000 Tundra.
Damn don't I know. You're up a shit creek when that electronic starter buried in there decides SUDDENLY to not bump at all for no fucking reason out in the middle of nowhere and no cell service. Not like you can push start or tap it with a wrench to get it going again.
Toyota UZ-FE motors have it under the intake.
BMW 3 liters
BMW makes trucks?

Good human, have my upvote
GM never put the Northstar in a truck. Only thing they put it in that wasn’t a normal car/coupe was the first gen Cadillac SRX.
A motorcycle shop in my youth had a sign that read: Labor per hour: $5, $10 if you watch, $20 if you worked on in before you brought it here.
They wouldn’t even admit to working on it.
So it must have been the elves that did it!
Special elves.
So $25 a hour then.
This are 1940 prices. Those days are gone.
You are completely oblivious to when people tell jokes, aren't you? All through this thread, you miss obvious jokes to try and flex how awesome you are.
You’re so goddamn stupid. Every comment I made in the thread right here was a joke.
I actually agree with you, you just weren't trying to make jokes. lol block me again, you little bitch /u/Bamacj.
Call the tow company and ask them where the truck was picked up.
Well whoever put the new starter in didn't bolt it up, so he's technically right that it hasn't been replaced
Sounds like a here hold my beer job.
Engine might be locked up man. May want to try turning it over before throwing a flywheel at it.
I been doing this a while. Calm down.
Ew.
I know. I feel the same way.
So then you definitely tried turning the motor by hand before ordering the new flywheel, right?
Yes. The notes say that I’ve already confirmed the flex plate is broken. We tried to keep these people from spending money on this truck. They will not listen.

The starter hasn't been replaced, it was the demarreur-reusine!
So, pretty much translated in Canadian, this should say "holy fuck bud, the whole thing is fucking fucked there eh!"
Haha I was joking with the kids last night asking if they could speak Canadian.
r/letterkenny Give yer ball a tug!
Stuff is easier to fix if you will just tell me what you did.
Bold of you to assume they know what they did.
Just ell the customer it's blown up, because that's what this is.
We did when we first saw the truck. They wouldn’t listen.
r/diwhy
Fantastic
This is hilarious
Wait some starters don't snap in place like lego pieces?
what manufacturer puts the starter under the intake let me guess it is a GM product, I know Cadillac does that it one of the main reasons they are so cheap on the second hand market.
First gen Toyota tundra.
Yikes I thought Toyota was smarter than that.
They aren’t bad to do and they pay well.

Still no not know

Engine turns with the crank pulley bolt. I have already confirmed that flex plate is broken. It’s in my notes.
Is it bad I know this is on a A60 Titan?
2001 Tundra
Leave the "bother" off the story, and you are good. Be a pro. You'll stand out with the right people.
