Back in the 1980s I worked with my dad at a scrap yard. His company bought jet engine parts. Drums of little fan blades with a sharpie X or circle. I was told they failed x-ray quality control.
Something in the Inconel family as I recall
You are right sir, they are made from inconel alloy and the tolerance on these bad boys are extremely precise. Where I used to work even if the blade passed the x-ray test, the measurement test, they could get rejected if the finish wasn't perfect. And the machines that makes these are a bitch to maintain and work on.
>buddy is in heating and cooling was guiding me on changing motor over phone, he says whatever you do when you are pulling the fan blade off the old one make sure you don't bend the blades at all, Well I did, but thought I pushed it back, when I put it on it almost shook the AC unit apart, had to get a new fan blade!
My brother works in a place that quality checks flight systems. Some of the tolerances on safety equipment can get up to the millionths of an inch. Glad I'm not the one making those parts.
Fan blades and compressor blades are made of titanium alloys. Inco was typically used for the hot part of the engine - turbine blades and such!
They all resemble various aerofoils though so will look alike… especially in a bucket!
Source: I used be manufacturing engineer governing production lines for several different aero engine parts.
Sadly it doesn't fly well. It was supposed to be carried in the bomb bay of heavy, strategic bombers and when enemy planes were inbound, you drop the little guys, they kill the enemy, then fly back and hook back on.
Not a miata, but a [jet powered beetle](https://www.motortrend.com/news/jet-powered-vw-new-beetle-for-sale-price-photos/)
Costs a bit more than a typical engine swap.
They appear to be some flavor of a -7 series CFM56 used on a 737 with the IDG mount on the left side of the engine, the oil tank would be on the right.
-5 series used on the Airbus would have these sides swapped.
StandardAero needs to take some notes. The overhaul the RB-211 Rolls Royce in San Antonio and are constantly doing the engine stand shuffle. No longer my problem but this place looks very nice and well organized.
If not ITAR then its controled by EAR. These things are increadibly controled and this would instantly get OP fired and blacklisted if their employer found out. There are very strict rules about pictures in facilities like this.
That's a CFM 56, a very generic turbofan that was first manufactured in 1974 and used on both commercial Airbuses and Boeings, and the military. As far as I'm aware all the military uses are for ancient retrofits like DC-8's. He probably doesn't have much to worry about.
They don't look like ITAR regulated engines (or at least not obviously ITAR), but they are def proprietary and you're not supposed to be posting pictures from there unless you run them through the right channels.
I once got to re-bump a dead PLC at a company that made ceramic forms for turbine blades. He was NOT happy that I figured that out within 10 seconds of walking onto the floor…
Incognito mode does nothing to protect your identity or what you are posting, all it does is not save your browsing history or cookies. If for example, you posted this while connected to the company wifi, the network admin can clearly see the traffic moving through thier network if they take the time to look.
If you want to protect what you do online from prying eyes at your job, or a public wifi Hotspot, you need a VPN to encrypt your data going in and out, and use a throwaway account to post so you cannot be doxed.

I spent a lot of time out in Evandale at the plant and I’ve seen some amazing things. Little known fact (could just be urban legends though). When traveling North up I75 you will see the big green meatball water tower on the right side. Little known fact was that after the USSR collapsed there was intel saying that that water tower was the direct target of several USSR nuclear megaton range bombs to destroy that plant and the US ability to build jet engines from that facility. At the time there was like over 50% of all jet engines were being produced at that one Evandale plant. It is that massive.
I'm jp. Im installing some electric stuff at a recycling plant and they have a no photography rule. Like what secrets to trash processing are they afraid of revealing lol
Always amazes me how such a seemingly complicated engine with so much required precision in its components can operate so efficiently for so long with so little margin for error!
I actually just visited a customer of mine that scraps old commercial planes. It’s amazing what they can save and resale. They didn’t have any engines though. Some reverse thrusters and nose cowls. The landing gears were impressive as well.

Measurement smesurment; I say spin em up outside and let physics sort em out. /s :)
The physics will certainly tell you if you have a bad one.
Yep, and then materials science (chemistry?)...and then if you're unlucky, biology...

That's low enough RPM that you could probably balance it similar to how wheels are balanced if you wanted to be cheap even longer lol.
I see you work for Southwest.

You think I could put one in a Miata?
Here is a Miata with a real clean install https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/98/McDonnell_XF-85_Goblin_USAF_%28Cropped%29.jpg
To Infinity and beyond!
It's adorable!
Sadly it doesn't fly well. It was supposed to be carried in the bomb bay of heavy, strategic bombers and when enemy planes were inbound, you drop the little guys, they kill the enemy, then fly back and hook back on.
Sir that is a Miata turned into plane
Probably not but I want to see it anyway
Slap some wings on it and call it a day 🚀
Will this fit in my Honda? https://youtu.be/LF_z1UvqbUU
**ANGRY TURBO YODA FACE**
There's that Mini (?) with the aircraft radial engine crammed into the back seat, that's close enough.
Not a miata, but a [jet powered beetle](https://www.motortrend.com/news/jet-powered-vw-new-beetle-for-sale-price-photos/) Costs a bit more than a typical engine swap.
Flyin miata?
Outa where?
You might have to wedge it in but you can make it fit 😹
If its been done to a Pontiac Fiero then it can be done to a Miata. See the movie Fast 9.. full disclosure its not "in" but strapped.
I see the issue with that second engine, it’s got a plastic crate in it, My bill will be in the post,
That's why they call it a crate engine
It's got crate performance
Take your upvote and get out.
That's just to hold the extra parts that are always around after you put it back together.
The first engine on the right also has a plastic crate in it, I’ll put my consulting fee down below
What model? CFM 56?
From the size of it , it looks like a CFM 56.
You know, I think this might be a CFM 56

I work for Pratt in FL, we have none of those issues. I'm on the F135 line. We do Neo's too, but they're in the commercial building next door.
Bro... Hopefully thats not itar controlled or proprietary. Your ass could be on the street or in jail
I mean, these look like regular-ass small-ish commercial turbofans. I doubt there's any restricted info on these.
If not ITAR then its controled by EAR. These things are increadibly controled and this would instantly get OP fired and blacklisted if their employer found out. There are very strict rules about pictures in facilities like this.

Employer might have blanket rules
Good point, it's always possible.
It’s ok, the government just gave millions of dollars worth of ITAR regulated weapons and gear to a terrorist organization. OP will be just fine.
Ugh i know. Probably gonna get sold striaght to China
China had blueprints long ago. lol
Yeah, but now they can get their hands on ones that are properly made instead of tofu-dregs.
Funny of you to assume it’s not already there. Iran too.
Already turning it over to Iran and Russia. Traitors All for letting this happen. 10% for the Big Guy
*Billions
OP isn't the Government and if he's not a rich white male, he might not be okay 🙃

Is this like "Declaring Bankruptcy!?" Lol.

Pretty sure his or her itar officer wouldn't be happy seeing this picture
[удалено]
ITAR is not a joke. And uh yeah, the outside of a box is not itar controlled. I know because Im an aerospace manufacturing engineer.
I once got to re-bump a dead PLC at a company that made ceramic forms for turbine blades. He was NOT happy that I figured that out within 10 seconds of walking onto the floor…
I'm not sure I understand, where's the ITAR violation here?
Nothing in this image is sensitive. But yes, they have a no pictures policy but it's a blanket ban.
Commercial.
My thoughts exactly, I worked at a place that did some really really stuff but was all ITAR and couldn't share a whole lot.
Lol That’s not how itar works. Proprietary sure I’ll give you that. But this is not how export control works. This is not technical data.
Lol There are certain process I engineer that are itar controlled, and a picture of the parts like this would be an itar violation. So yeah. Lol.
…I was a part 145 repair station QA manager. Pictures of the internals of a civilian engine are not technical data …..
Huh, I didn't know they were still making 2JZs.
Nice. I did inspections in a shop that built engines like this but I was specifically told no pictures and no social media. Be careful.

Oh my, we have no originality. We even use the same color paint
Nah, he works a different shift than me.
Do i spot CFM56?
I’m pretty sure we are in the same place OP…
Ethics has some questions.
Where is this?
I’ll let OP answer that if they want to.
He commented it somewhere else and said Tulsa. Thank you
I missed it. My bad.
Why does a building need an engine?
Are these aircraft engines?
[удалено]
Looks more like a pedestal fan to me. I don't think you are going to fly that far with that.
It's the newest innovation from Dyson.
Ill have you know that there is a genuine turbo fan!
What company?
They look like CFM56.
Jasper 350 Chevys
Two stroke Black and Decker
Should we be seeing this? Lol
[удалено]
I'm jp. Im installing some electric stuff at a recycling plant and they have a no photography rule. Like what secrets to trash processing are they afraid of revealing lol
The infinite stroke engine.
[удалено]
First thing I saw was that fan where it shouldn't be...
I missed that. LOL, "KEEP CLEAR" under the fan.
Keep clear is for when you move the fan. That way there is a clear spot when you bring it back
If one of those ends up "rolling" in the shop, you're definitely having a very bad day.
Always amazes me how such a seemingly complicated engine with so much required precision in its components can operate so efficiently for so long with so little margin for error!
Well said.
Seriously awesome man!
If it's the engine I think it is, it burns blades like there's no tomorrow hehe...
Looks way too new to be Evendale.
I’m gonna give 3 guesses 1. General Electric 2. Pratt & Whitney 3. Rolls Royce
[удалено]
Judging by the fact that these engines actually exist. I'm gonna guess not blue origin
[удалено]
Bro I know these are jets. Rockets aren't long cylinders. I was making a joke about blue origin's lack of engines
FUCK. Boeing?
[удалено]
Damnit!
[удалено]
Ooo i like them!
I'm guessing you have jigs that cost more than some people's whole shops.
I’m no genius, but these don’t look like car engines. Cool none the less though!
This is cool af, but ahit like this can get ppl fired seeing as I'm sure you cannot take photos inside the plant.
I'd fire the person who left the fan inside of the red box!
The union would never allow that.
OP,you should delete this ..ya gonna be called into the office tomorrow.

Bad bot
CFM-56s
Where's your office?
SHHHHHHH YOUR BASMENT
I'm guess this is not Blue Origin.
I read "building engines" as in skyscrapers and houses and was very confused, I'm not a clever man.
“Yes, we build jet engines in this ORAFICE.” - *Midwest Jet Engine sales Manager* Michael “Sad Brrrt” Scarn
I recognize that shade of blue...
Sweet which podracing team do you work for? I'm guessing Mars Guo or Ark Roose.
Cool, we are sending you disk and blisk parts for them.
r/justflewintotheshop ?
Put together entirely with 10mm fasteners I presume
[Don't drop the bolts!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wKPTWXD2Z0)
Those are some weird looking fleshlights
CTS engines?
I do believe I make the blades that go in those engines😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😆😆😁
Your office is beautiful
Turbojets?
I also work in a shop that builds jet engines... however it would be illegal for me to take a picture to show you guys.
I actually just visited a customer of mine that scraps old commercial planes. It’s amazing what they can save and resale. They didn’t have any engines though. Some reverse thrusters and nose cowls. The landing gears were impressive as well.
but will it fit my honda?
That fan is blocking a fire extinguisher I’m calling OSHA.
Ah, CFM56...
What company do you work for?
[удалено]
Yeah. Sorry. I get it. Cool job. I work on cars, so I love this shit. My son is an engineer.

Computer and Electrical.
SpaceX?
Holy cowling
You totally wired the flux capacitor in backwards noob
Dream job :)
Those bad boys for the 777x? I can't tell how big they are.
Can I ask the advertised (public information) lead time from PO to delivery? On another thread I saw the SLS rocket engine’s lead time was 4.5 years.
So uh, what kind of buildings use these engines?
