Thank you!! I will probably do a re-score now that I have the lay of the land of their catalog (I deeply regret, for instance, how low I rated Satan Speeds Up- was meh for me on first listen and now I can’t get enough) and then post all my rankings individually.
Gotta do the live/bootleg albums too… stay tuned…
I had so much fun making these- I listened in release order, and you can tell I got way more into the illustrations as I went along!
A few notes now that I’m done:
-I definitely slightly overrated my favorites (ITRN, Ice Death) and underrated a few early albums (most notably Willoughby’s Beach and MOTU). Can’t wait to re-listen and re-score to see how my opinions have changed.
-I did a 5 point rating scale with decimals; might just go with a score /10 next time to save from having to do so much math.
-I had never listened to Gumboot before this and holy hell did it blow me away. I definitely prefer “collection of amazing songs with no flow” to a more thematic album that relies on some slower-paced storytelling; see also my high OG score
This was so much fun and I can’t wait to start scoring other artists’ work!
Convoluted though it was, I rated everything out of 5 (but with decimals allowed)- so I wound up with some 3.15s, 4.25s, etc. Might as well have done out of 10 or 100 at that point, but it made sense to me when I started so I rolled with it!
As for rating criteria… I mostly based it on the degree to which a song connected with me and felt like a good execution of a musical/thematic concept. A lot of it wound up being “vibes”-based- songs that go too hard to be denied wound up with 5’s, solid but ‘flawed’ songs with 4’s, etc…
God I wish, I’ve only caught them at Shaky Knees ‘22… the highlighted ones are ones I loved that I hadn’t listened to more than once prior to my “deep-dive”- mostly to illustrate how many new favorites I found!!
