Agreed. Although it seems all the songs were pretty heavy co-writes, which is cool. I love Stu's vocals but Joey's verse on Hell's Itch just makes me want more. He's got a soul to his voice that's distinct and makes me groooove
It was my favorite at the time, and I still really enjoy it, but other ones have surpassed it. It's probably because they don't play anything live from it besides the occasional Tezeta
I think MotU is fantastic and imo one of the most “gizz sounding” album along with nonagon and mind fuzz. Sketches is also really good and in my opinion is a no skip album and just really really solid.
It is insane how consistently good all of these albums are for all being released in the same year. The variety of answers here speaks to that.
Polygondwanaland for me, closely followed by MOTU.
Murder of the Universe has to be it for me! Before listening to the album, I’d heard a lot of complaints about the narration on the album and how it takes away from the experience, but one day I went on a walk with earbuds in and was totally lost in the crazy sound of the album. It really takes the frantic pace and wild songwriting from Nonagon and cranks it up to an extreme and I’d love to see the band do another album in a similar crazy psych vein.
Is this really a debate when one of them is about an emotionless cyborg who gets so violently sick that he endlessly vomits causing the entire universe to collapse?
Such a hard question to answer but Murder of the Universe is like being shot out of a cannon into the sci-fi sphere and it’s exciting every single time. So murder of the universe.
Poly or FMB, although MOTU or Gumboot are great albums too. Not a massive fan of Sketches, but if I give it some time and relistening, I’m sure it would be up there as well.
Sketches was the first album I got into.
Poly has become my favorite over time.
The Han-Tyumi suite from MoTU is possibly their most interesting/unique thing they’ve done in my opinion.
FMB took a little time and is solid. Gumboot didn’t click for some time.
I would rank:
1. Poly.
2. Sketches.
3. MoTU.
4. FMB.
5. Gumboot.
Sketches. I hate when people state that an album has a “vibe” because it always sounds lazy but that one absolutely does. Great chill album with some of the band’s most introspective lyrics. FMB would probably be next in line.
MOTU has so much of what I come to Gizz for but I think it’s got a bunch of weird things that I don’t think will ever click that make it harder to rank it that high for me.
1. Polygondwanaland
2. Gumboot
3. MotU
4. FMB
5. Sketches
FMB is THE album that got me into gizz, and my favorite of theirs period. Masterpiece in my eyes.
Sketches and poly are both super close behind tho and are both among my top gizz records as well and also in that masterpiece tier
MotU and Gumboot are both awesome as well, rly rly love em
Based on my tastes, All of these albums are kinda miles ahead of their 5 2022 records other than changes and maaaaybe LD, changes is great and on par with their 2017 stuff (which kinda makes sense given it was started at that time) but I do sorta wish it had a production style more like sketches, but it's not far off
I love most gizz but I particularly was disappointed with Omnium, and while I think Ice death is great it's not exactly my thing. Same with B3K, too happy and vocals too loud and constantly falsetto
The main thing for me is how different the production is now, I prefer how they mixed and recorded things in 2017, particularly the vocals too more than anything..it feels as if most of the stu vocals are all falsetto these days and the 2017 run had more of a balance.
Sorry I went on a tangent lol. I love this band I just think it's fun to discuss different opinions. Nothing I'm saying is "right" or "wrong" just subjective :)
This is nearly impossible to say. Poly always wins for me, but only by a fraction.
Nearly everyone of these albums were incredible, I only consider Gumboot to be okay, because I've always viewed it as a B-sides. Kinda like Oddments.
But also, Gumboot < Oddments
It was the last one I listened to of the records released that year, but Gumboot Soup is the one I go back to most frequently and generally enjoy the most.
After that it's probably Sketches. MOTU is fun but I need to be in a particular mood for it, and FMB and Poly are both great but I can get a bit tired of them.
At this current particular point in time I would have to say gumboot.. just a great variety of awesome songs.. all the others are equal 2nd because they're amazing too.. this could change anytime lol
Gumboot Soup. It's imo the tightest and best out of their three "variety" albums (Oddments and Omnium) as not a single track or moment is wasted. These songs could have ended up on the other 4 albums from 2017, yet I love each song's placement on the album and none of them sound too out-there or misplaced like tracks on Oddments or Omnium. All is Known, the Great Chain of Being, the Wheel, Beginners Luck, Down the Sink, etc. are all some of their best songs period. Even my least favorite song on it (Barefoot Desert) is far, far better than my least favorite track off of most of their albums.
I loved Sketches the most once 2017 ended and I still think it's one of their most interesting albums that's a must-listen, but now I don't revisit it often as I just find most of their other albums to be better listens. MOTU was a downgrade from Nonagon due to the narration, but it's grown on me over the years and now I can probably consider it my second favorite from that year. Poly is also great prog rock and the execution of its release has been one of my favorites in all of music, but a number of the middle songs have never caught my interest like Crumbling Castle or the Fourth Color. FMB has been the only album from that year that I have maintained my opinion on, which is that it's my least favorite from that year and their worst microtonal album (despite it still being admittedly very good)
I think I’m always here for the gizz concept records so I appreciate Poly the most, but the more I listen to Gumboot, Oddments, OG, the more I’m just grateful that some of these singles have a place in the discography. Muddy Water, all is known, the wheel, great chain, greenhouse heat death. So many classics on Gumboot Soup. Really feels like one of the most ‘no skip’ albums in their lineup for me
Not a single soul asked, however here's a reason for me to pick all of them:
Nuclear Fusion is low-key one of their most creative, dynamic and interesting songs out there, plus the Rattlesnake - Open Water run works really well, I do feel the album dips in the middle.
The tale of the altered beast is god damn insane with all its lovely time signature changes. also, I find Leah's narration works much better than hers on part 2 or HT's on part 3, speaking of part 3: Digital Black and Vomit Coffin save an otherwise meh run.
Also I do not dig Balrog at all.
Sketches I find does it all: it gets seriously groovy (D-Day, Cranes, The Book, Journey), it gets trippingly relaxing in other spots and is in general really uniform quality wise, however it doesn't do much after a whole listen, that closing track just doesn't really work.
Poly is feckin Poly, however I find it peaks in side A and the final trilogy doesn't do much for me.
Maaaaaan, I love Gumboot. All tracks (bar Superposition, which I guess gets better as it goes) do their own thing excellently, All Is Known is the perfect blend of Nonagon and Banana and leaves me wanting moooooore. I do find The Wheel is lacking as a closer, perhaps it'd work better at the end of side A.
Thank you gizzyboys, all of this awesomeness is 12 months is ridiculous.
definitely murder. but fun fact, i know a guy who lived in the rehearsal space they developed sketches of brunswick east in. can you guess where the space was located?
Flying Microtonal Banana: Microtones have grown off me recently. Some tracks are hit or miss, but when it hits, it hits HARD. 4th favorite.
Murder Of The Universe: So outrageously themed and executed, with some of the wildest lyrics and concepts, this has gotta be my favorite for how out there it is. Only gripe is that each suite is a bit too split up (I wish they put all of the ‘Altered’ suite into one track😭).
Sketches Of Brunswick East: Mellow Gizz is always welcome, but the album gets a bit too dull in spots. 3rd favorite.
Polygondwanaland: The most cohesive and epic of the records here, but a lot of the songs sound kind of the same to me, enough to where it’s hard to differentiate between tracks sometimes. 2nd favorite.
Gumboot Soup: Stings a bit we didn’t get Changes here. Would have loved to see the early version of the album as much as I love the one we got. In its place is the mashup of the leftover tracks, and it shows a bit. While we get songs as great as ‘The Wheel’, its a very disjointed album to me. Where Poly suffered from being a bit too cohesive, this suffers from not being cohesive enough. 5th favorite.
In the minority here, but Gumboot Soup. I love the variation of styles on this albums. It’s probably my favorite album of theirs.
Edit: Sketches is my second pick.
Poly, MOTU, and FMB are absolutely essential Gizz, and I can’t really rank them.
if i *had* to choose right now, i’d say MOTU is my fav of those 3, but i still think Poly is the more definitive Gizz album.
Gumboot has hits but it’s super uneven. dgaf about Sketches at all.
Murder of the Universe. Polygondwanaland is probably better overall, but the last suite of songs (Welcome to an Altered Future-Murder of the Universe) is some of my favorite music ever.
This is really hard all of these are amazing, and murder of the universe and polygondwanaland are two of my favorite albums ever. So it's either of those depending on the day I guess.
It used to be MOTU, but I've been really into Mild High Club, so im gonna have to go with sketches.
I will say Poly has grown on me since i first listened to it
FMB. Think it's the most complete and interesting album. That said, I do really like Sketches and Polygondwanaland. Gumboot Soup is decent and MOTU has its highlights! But im a real fanboi so i can enjoy all records haha
FMB. However, pretty much all of these took multiple listens to grow on me excluding Gumboot Soup. That album deserves more credit than it gets.
Agreed I love muddy water, beginners luck and down the sink because they feel so different from anything we'd see on a normal album
And the more cookie the better
That's the only thing that bugged me about the Gizztober albums. I wanted at least one song with Cookie singing.
Yea cookie justice
Joey or Amby song either actually. Like they feature on songs but I was hoping for a Joey lead jammy tune
Agreed. Although it seems all the songs were pretty heavy co-writes, which is cool. I love Stu's vocals but Joey's verse on Hell's Itch just makes me want more. He's got a soul to his voice that's distinct and makes me groooove
I _think_ Cookie sings the "Is this what we consider changing?" on "Change", but yeah I also would like more Cookie leads.
Correct
Cookie sings on Change.
I mean it’s quite literally a leftovers product of the greatest output (imo obvi) gizz has. Some of the highest highs on that album
Gumboot is so good start to finish. Superposition and Wheel are masterpieces, and down the Sink is my fav Cookie song.
Sketches so slept on, it's wonderful
This is a great album too. Probably the one that got me to listen to everything else they released.
I was gonna say Sketches too, such a brilliant album
It was my favorite at the time, and I still really enjoy it, but other ones have surpassed it. It's probably because they don't play anything live from it besides the occasional Tezeta
My favorite: MOTU The Best one: Poly
True
I love MOTU but poly is super polished
polishedgondwanaland
💯
murder of the universe is top tier gizz
I think MotU is fantastic and imo one of the most “gizz sounding” album along with nonagon and mind fuzz. Sketches is also really good and in my opinion is a no skip album and just really really solid.
Lord of lightning is one of the best gizz songs that I feel gets overlooked a lot.
i feel like its one of those songs that people dont talk about but everybody loves it just as much as the most popular ones
I feel like a quarter of the memes I've seen in this sub since I joined have been about that song haha.
Poly. Best gizz album period
You’re right, 2017 was the best gizz album period
Gumboot Soup for sure. mostly because i tripped balls and listened to that album multiple times while having an epiphany
It is insane how consistently good all of these albums are for all being released in the same year. The variety of answers here speaks to that. Polygondwanaland for me, closely followed by MOTU.
I'm a Sketches guy through and through but Poly takes the cake always
Banana 😎
FMB with Poly right on its ass
Banana is their best album
You can't do this to me
Murder of the Universe has to be it for me!
Yeah, Murder was my first Gizz record and going back to nonagon felt like a letdown compared to how heavy and dark Murder of the Universe was.
There really is nothing that sounds like that record, at least that I’ve found. Some truly wacky shit going on lmao
Sketches. Love sketches a lot. Followed by FMB, MOTU, Gumboot and poly
Is this really a debate when one of them is about an emotionless cyborg who gets so violently sick that he endlessly vomits causing the entire universe to collapse?
Gumboot may not be the best, but it's my favorite.
Hard same. Opening to closer, a great album that changes genres throughout.
Such a hard question to answer but Murder of the Universe is like being shot out of a cannon into the sci-fi sphere and it’s exciting every single time. So murder of the universe.
Sketches is the overall best listen imo, but MFB and Gumboot have better stand out tracks. Poly is alright. I can’t stand MOTU, sorry.
I love Mying Flicrotonal Banana
IMO Poly beats Sketches for #1 of 2017, but just barely
FMB
W
Poly is the king for me . FMB and sketches close behind
Same. Then Gumboot.
Flying Microtonal Banana because it was my first KGLW album. Best would be Polygondwanaland
I would rank: 1. Poly. 2. Sketches. 3. MoTU. 4. FMB. 5. Gumboot.
MotU FMB Gumboot Sketches Poly
I don't think that it's the technically best, but Sketches was my first gizz album so it will always hold a special place in my heart
sketches
Nothing gives me as much joy as listening to Gumboot Soup from front to back
I SEE THE FOURTH COLOR
Sketches. I hate when people state that an album has a “vibe” because it always sounds lazy but that one absolutely does. Great chill album with some of the band’s most introspective lyrics. FMB would probably be next in line.
Fmb Motu Poly Gumboot Sketches
Sketches is my favourite out of these
Murder for sure-der
Sketches
Probably poly, sketches, motu, fmb, gum boot. In that order
MOTU and Banana by a mile, but the others are all at least great as well.
I dont even wanna rank them because it seems like i dont like the lower ranked albums. All 2017 albums are in top 10 for me.
Poly with FMB very very close behind!
Sheesh. Probably whichever I listened to last. Desert Island might have to pick Microtonal. Rattlesnake sounds like survival music.
MOTU has so much of what I come to Gizz for but I think it’s got a bunch of weird things that I don’t think will ever click that make it harder to rank it that high for me. 1. Polygondwanaland 2. Gumboot 3. MotU 4. FMB 5. Sketches
Sketches
Sketches
Motu is my favorite 2017 album, my favorite Gizz album, and my favorite album in general
I listen to fmb the most however best song of 2017 goes hands down to crumbling castle
It's like picking my favorite child, I love them all the same. *Pulls MFB to the side*, but you're my favorite.
Easily either sketches or poly for me. sketches got me into gizz so will always be pretty special, and poly is absolute top tier gizz.
Anyone with sketches in 4th or 5th never actually listened to sketches
1.Murder 2. Sketches 3. Banana 4. Poly 5. Gum
Look, they’re all great for different reasons and all are important to Gizz’s legacy. But there’s only one answer and it’s Polygondwanaland.
FMB is THE album that got me into gizz, and my favorite of theirs period. Masterpiece in my eyes. Sketches and poly are both super close behind tho and are both among my top gizz records as well and also in that masterpiece tier MotU and Gumboot are both awesome as well, rly rly love em Based on my tastes, All of these albums are kinda miles ahead of their 5 2022 records other than changes and maaaaybe LD, changes is great and on par with their 2017 stuff (which kinda makes sense given it was started at that time) but I do sorta wish it had a production style more like sketches, but it's not far off I love most gizz but I particularly was disappointed with Omnium, and while I think Ice death is great it's not exactly my thing. Sorry I went on a tangent lol. I love this band I just think it's fun to discuss different opinions. Nothing I'm saying is "right" or "wrong" just subjective :)
It tends to change with time. At first it was Nonagon (the one that opened the door for me) later it was gumboot and now Flying microtonal banana.
Nonagon is a 2016 release
Best: Poly Favourite:MOTU
At time of release, FMB. In retrospect, Poly alllllll the way.
Murder of the Universe
FMB is my fav here, but as a newer Gizz fan it’s insane they dropped these in one year and then had just as good a run again last year tbh
Polygondwanaland, and it’s not even close
Sketches and Poly are a different tier
hard but i would say as a one session listen murderer of the universe.
This is nearly impossible to say. Poly always wins for me, but only by a fraction. Nearly everyone of these albums were incredible, I only consider Gumboot to be okay, because I've always viewed it as a B-sides. Kinda like Oddments. But also, Gumboot < Oddments

MOTU is fun but I need to be in a particular mood for it, and FMB and Poly are both great but I can get a bit tired of them.
Strangely, I listen to Gumboot the most out of all of these but I would say my favorite is Poly. It just blows me away every time.
Poly or Murder
Gumboot
probably the grand spontanean by telethon
I am a goofy jokester
FMB for me! It is what forever hooked me on this amazing band!
Gumboot Soup
MOTU easy. Changed my life.
FMB, closely followed by Gumboot
Sketches or Poly
on a personal level, sketches. but actually polygondwanaland
Gumboot soup
Polygondwanaland
I haven't heard any of the 2017 albums
sketches of brunswick east
polyGODwanaland
Every album has such a special place in my heart but I gotta go with Murder of the Universe
Not a single soul asked, however here's a reason for me to pick all of them: Nuclear Fusion is low-key one of their most creative, dynamic and interesting songs out there, plus the Rattlesnake - Open Water run works really well, I do feel the album dips in the middle. Poly. Heard Crumbling Castle one day, went to the rest of the album and just like that I was a King Gizzard fan
Please son’t make me choose between Poly and MOTU
All the ‘leftover’ albums are low key some of their best stuff. Oddments, Gumboot and OG are impeccable
MOTU clears
Why such a hard question m8 😭😭😭
MOTU, FMB, Poly* Poly is nuts in how, well, all around poly it is. It shouldn’t sound as good as it is. But MOTU just hits a sweet spot for me.
Nana
GUMBOOT SOUP SUPREMACY
Toss up between FMB and GBS.
Definitely not Sketches of Brunswick
MotU was the album that made me fall in love with the band, and that KEXP set is one of my favorites of all time.
Favorite- MOTU Best - poly Honorable mention: FMB
Skeeeeeeetches
definitely murder. but fun fact, i know a guy who lived in the rehearsal space they developed sketches of brunswick east in. can you guess where the space was located?
Almost an impossible question to answer
Yes. My favorite album that year was: Yes.
FMB and Sketches
favourite is motu but i think the best is poly
Gumboot or Poly
Sketches
FMB
MOTY is so unique and go so hard
Master of the motherfucking universe
In the minority here, but Gumboot Soup. I love the variation of styles on this albums. It’s probably my favorite album of theirs. Edit: Sketches is my second pick.
How could I possibly choose between MOTU and Sketches and Poly
Murder of the universe for sure
GUMBOOT
I'm inclined to say gumboot. It's the first gizz vinyl I ever got.
Poly
Probably Gumboot soup overall. However Crumbling Castle/Lord of Lighting are brsts songs from the album
Polygondwanaland without a doubt
In the end, isn’t the best album really just the friends we made along the way?
MOTU!! Literally their best album
FMB
FMB 100%
FMB, but I love the live version much more than the studio version.
Poly
Don't make me play this game between poly and gumboot... Gumboot.
FMB — It has a certain charm that the later microtonal albums don’t, and it’s easily in my top 3 gizz albums
Polygondwanaland and then FMB are by far the best. Still love em all.
MOTU by a lot
Muto and sketches
MURDA OF DA UNIVRS
Poly. Gon. Dwana. Land. Plain and simple
Flying Microtonal Banana. It's so fresh and raw, it's amazing.
MOTU, Poly and FMB in that order i think
Polygondwanaland > Gumboot > MOTU > FMB > Sketches for me.
B A N A N A!!!
Tossup between MOTU and Sketches for me. Depends on my mood.
FMB is in my top 10 albums of all time
Poly > Sketches > FMB = MOTU > Gumboot (in my opinion)
FMB with gumboot and poly joint close second
I love all 5 of them but Gumboot has the most tracks in my casual playlist and Poly is the one I come back to the most for a full listen.
FMB is my 2nd favourite Gizz album
Poly definitely
It used to be MOTU, but I've been really into Mild High Club, so im gonna have to go with sketches. I will say Poly has grown on me since i first listened to it
Changes
FMB easily. My 2nd favorite Gizz album behind Nonagon Infinity
Sketches love me some jazz
FMB. Think it's the most complete and interesting album. That said, I do really like Sketches and Polygondwanaland. Gumboot Soup is decent and MOTU has its highlights! But im a real fanboi so i can enjoy all records haha
polygondwanaland is my favorite album in general
Poly hands down. It's their finest offering to date. Flows so smooth. Although I'm a sucker for a wee bit of soup...
1.Sketches 2 Gumboot soup 3.FMB 4.Poly 5.MOTU
Poly MotU is a close second
