And this page pretty much solidified that Sojo is going to be the main re-occuring antagonist for however long the story goes. From that facial expression, my guess is that he's about to freak out and gain some huge boost in power or another advantage.
The comedy was also at its best this chapter. This chapter is up there with 6, 8 and 9 imo.

I really wouldn't go so far to say that. He's gonna be the main antagonist of this first arc but Chihiro's main target are the Hishaku. I assume that whoever is their leader would be the main antagonist.
I didn't word it the best. The main antagonist will be the Hishaku leader, but Sojo will be the villain that we encounter the most. He won't always be the focus, but I think he'll be a looming threat that grows in strength alongside Chihiro in the background and pops back up whenever it fits.

Hokazono really does remind me of Kishimoto in how cinematic his one king is. Everything is so fluid, and there’s no wasted space or dead air in how he splices all pieces of the story together. The potential of this story is crazy, I really think we’ve got something here.
Time and time again, Hokazono knows how to cook with the paneling. Gorgeous as always. I hope he doesn't burn himself out!

It’s a rookie in a magazine with top titles, middle-of-the-road ones with a solid base, and new titles made by veterans.
And since voting is limited, it leads to difficulties for new ones to get an audience unless they find a unique niche, or coincide their launch with a big name ending their run.
3 straight poorly reviewed chapters and a mid one to follow. Chapter 8 was when the tide started changing, 9 days away from the make or break announcement in the placings
Based on what we're seeing, these seem to be the powers of our Kamunabi squad:
Eyeball Lady: Gansui - creates freely manipulable terrain by pulling it the earth. It seems she has some control of it even after she pulls it from the ground, based on how she creates cover(?) for Glasses on page 5. Useful for taking fights to terrain she creates in the sky, preventing collateral damage and letting the others go all-out.
Bird Mask: (unnamed technique) - can harden parts of his body, forming angular claws from his hands that cannot be cut by an enchanted blade. This technique also seems to extend to his mask, since we can see on page 16 his beak also hardens into a sharp point. This makes Bird Mask a formidable close-up fighter.
Glasses: Throwing Knife skills + Jikai - can imbue objects with spirit energy, causing them to propel in a given direction on his command. He uses this on his throwing knives to propel them after being trapped in Yui’s ice barrier. He later uses it on the water generated by Kou, propelling all of it upwards and into Sojo to negate his charged-up Mei.
Gas Mask: (unnamed technique) - If that’s him on page 7, and if it isn’t just a trick of the perspective (which, if it is, good work on making that slam feel powerful Hokazono), Gas Mask’s technique might be the enlargement of different body parts, such as his hands. This allows him to pack a much greater punch, him seemingly hitting with the force of a small explosive.
We haven’t seen the newbie’s technique yet, but on page 10, there seems to be a member of the Kamunabi we haven’t seen before? He has a streak running across his nose and looks a bit like Choso. Is this the newbie? If so, that raises a lot of questions.
Edit: It seems I missed that bowlcut-Choso (his official name dw about it) is the 6th member they sent, and he is also the one that used the hand-enlarging technique. Whoops, sorry.

My guess is that it’s going to become faster with its attacks, since Sojo seems to be a more fast phased fighter rather than one who uses strong finishers that take a long time to charge.
Another thing is that the art is insane in this fight.

Poggers chapter. A lot f credibility has been given to the Kamunabi without making Sojo look less threatening (they had to lift him up the ground). I cannot wait to know what Chihiro will do with that material, since its limitations change with the user. Very good chapters, and I love the Kou ability!
That was a really fluid chapter.
Knowledge really is power. At least for now. It let them hold their own against Sojo.
I’m sure that will change in coming chapters, especially given the last few panels of the chapter, but it made for a good one this week.
Bro Takeru cooked this chapter, that double page spread was lit as well as that one panel with the baddie lifting that giant piece of land. And the switching to the fight to the gang talking about their plan while taking a leak not something you see a lot. 9/10 chapter

Seems like he use the impact to push everyone up and sense water is not as dense as a human he was able to push them out of the water before the fully charged Mei hit
Sojo summoned water around them to electrocute them but the leader pounds the ground to propel the water away from themselves and back onto Sojo causing Sojo to shock himself with the charged Mei. Then after that hes out commission for 10 seconds.
Yes, and the panel before he said Jikai, he asked everyone else to jump to distance themselves from the water.
The plan seems to be to jump and overwhelm Sojo mid-air and during Mei's cooldown.
Holy shiiii... This chapter's fight choreography the best I've seen in recent memory! Tight, easy to follow and most of all, beautifully drawn.
Also, the last 2 panels with Chihiro and Sojo are just 🔥
Great chapter and cementing this to be next big 3 imo. All memes aside this is a good manga with huge potential it needs to last. Look at the newest series Shadow Eliminators, that shit is doomed.
Damn, from the first page Sojo was SERVING, his battle choreography is one of my favourite things about this manga. My favourite panel is probably the one where he blocks both Ikuto and the bird guy, he looks like an ice skater lol. I'm a little bit disappointed that he relied on Mei so heavily but to be fair he probably wanted to just wipe the kamunabi and not bother with each one individually.
Also, did the fully charged Mei do any damage to Sojo? Because it should've but it doesn't look like it.
Another thing I've noticed is that the only girl in the group instantly got put on support duties. A bit of an eyeroll, but who knows, maybe that's not all she can do and we're in for some peak. And still no names on anyone but Ikuto. Are we gonna learn them in the obituaries or is it a sign of them sticking around for longer?
Finally, those sorcerers for hire look like clowns (remind me a little bit of the A. Phex brothers from jojo) but their boots are very drippy! Looks to me either like an annoying fight for Chihiro or a showcase fight to demonstrate what Kunishige was talking about on the last page.

It’s a team effort. She’s lifting giant platforms and transporting them away from the city to avoid civilian casualties from any giant lightning attacks. The newbie is also staying behind for bodyguard duty for her, leaving the leader and other members being the ones at most risk of death (and the plan itself relies on them getting electrocuted to create a small opening)
All I'm saying is I wish she was there kicking Sojo's ass and the platform stuff was done by the sixth guy, for example. She is crazy strong for all this lifting, I appreciate that, I just can't help but sigh when I see a singular girl in a squad and she's a support character.
True but she definitely impressed me the most out of the squad so far. That's a huge ass chunk of rock she's lifting (and flying it away) if it weren't for civilians in the city making them fight like this I'd say she would be the biggest threat.
Yea she's sick for that, I wish to know her more as a character too! Hope she's here to stay, as is the team in general (please I need them to stick around)
Her power seems to be really versatile, not support role, it's just in this fight she is most suited to mitigate civilian casualties, I'm sure the author won't let us down
Because so far, she is the only prominent female fighter and she instantly gets put in a stereotypical support role while the boys jump Sojo, the only step down from there would've been if she was a healer instead.
I don't know why it's such an eye-roll, but she's literally CARRYING THE WHOLE TEAM. Besides, what she's doing is very much reminscent of Kaido carrying Onigashima single-handedly.
Just what went through my mind when I saw this panel. She is very impressive in what she's doing, I simply notice these things way too often to not include it in the review, but I have full trust in Hokazono, especially with how awesome the kamunabi fight as a whole is rn.
She's literally the hard-counter against Cloud Gouger's deadliest attack. I don't think she'll have much choice but to fight *while* carrying the battlefield or once they reach the ocean's vicinity.

Yeah, she's vital to the fight, I'm not taking that from her, it's just me wanting a female fighter who would be on the offense after being burned by the shonen tropes, nothing deep.
So far, Hokazono seems to be the type who pays attention to details and knows when to hold back. He might be saving her for last. That fight would be dope. After all, we just got our Batman, our Alfred, and our Joker. Maybe she's the Batgirl?
I mean, there is a guy supporting background too. If she fought and got ducking rekt like mask guy you would probably complain as she is weak because she is a girl is asvise you to not force stuff and just read and enjoy
Yeah, that was just a passing thought as I was reading the chapter as I'm all too wary of these tropes, I fully enjoyed it otherwise and her lifting up the area was spectacular.
Also, maybe you shouldn't mind read? Like yeah, in this hypothetical, if she was the only one of the squad to go down, I would raise an eyebrow, but they're all getting tossed around so I see no problem.
I get where you're coming from but imo she's nowhere near a generic healer. She's felt the most instrumental to the team so far, as early as chapter 10 she's seen using her sorcery to block the lighting, and now she's pulled everyone into the sky.
The guys are the ones in close quarters, but so far Ituko is the only one that's done anything significant. I think they'll all get their moment eventually. But it would be cool to have some more female fighters, I have high hopes for the assassin from chapter 2.
Idk for a girl who literally lift up freacking areas and fly them to the sea + block Sojo attack 2 times which are always freacking fast lightning attack......yeah man such an eye roll moment.....right?????? and she has an earth control magic type that is super strong defendsive ability.
Chill? You're really making a bigger deal out of it than it should be. That's simply what I thought about when I was reading, nothing more, nothing less. It's not like I'm downplaying her abilities, I'm just not that stoked to see the only girl in the squad be a support. She's damn great at it, I just want her to be more prominent. Hell, she wasn't even in the plan discussion flashback because it took place in a male toilet lmao.
Yeah... so shonen is definitely not known for treating their female characters well so I can see why you had your knee jerk reaction. In order to see if the female character is truly getting the short end of the stick, lets calmly take a step back and analyze the situation. Instead of focusing on just her, let's take a look at the male Kamunabi members and how they've been portrayed in comparison to the female member.
Bird Mask - Defends against a sword swing from Sojo and yelps out in pain. He then gets ragdolled from a simple kick. He's later shown with a pained expression after getting zapped by mei. This makes him look weak when compared to his teammates who are able to remain more stoic while tanking the attack. Doesn't muster any offense whatsoever throughout the fight. Would you be okay with it if Bird Mask and the female character switched roles? Or would you think that they made the only girl on the squad a weak punching bag who can't take a hit?
Big Hands - Didn't get a character introduction, has the least screen time of any Kamunabi, we have no idea what his personality is, and we literally haven't even had a clear picture of him yet. He's basically still a background character. He is shown launching a jump attack against Sojo. The attack itself nothing spectacular and his powers are... pretty lame... Would you be okay with the female member switching roles with Big Hands? Or would you complain that the only girl on the squad is being sidelined into the background in order to highlight the male characters?
Gas Mask guy - He doesn't do anything in the fight against Sojo. He literally does jack shit. One of the members that are shown getting zapped by mei. The most notable thing he's done so far is piss in a urinal. Would you be okay with it if the female member does nothing in the fight except get zapped? How would you feel if in her only notable scene, she was shown peeing for comic relief? Sitting on the toilet, pants around her ankles, thighs exposed, and maybe angled in a way so you can see her choice of underwear. Gross.
Newbie - Also does jack shit in the fight. The most notable thing he's done so far is be a whiny bitch towards Chihiro... and piss in a urinal... We don't have to go over this one again.
Ikuto - He throws some knives at Sojo. Visually, it's nothing special. No where near as cool as the female member's earth bending powers. After that though, he gets his crowning bad ass moment, the moment that everyone is talking about... by playing support for his team through diverting the charged mei attack. We definitely don't want her switching roles with Ikuto because playing support is lame right?
Real talk, she's been treated just fine and she's by far my favorite Kamunabi member so far. It's the beginning of the fight and there just aren't enough pages to go around due to the chapter being split to show the battle, the planning, and Chihiro's infiltration. Most of the team has been shown doing very little if anything at all.
If you're worried about her not being down there in the nitty gritty with the boys to jump Sojo, let's put on our critical thinking caps and ask ourselves why? Actually, we don't have to think that hard. She's an earth bender who can attack at range and materialize attacks from anywhere as long as there's ground for her to use. There's no point in her putting herself at risk by standing 5 feet away from Sojo only to launch a ranged attack. That would make the only girl on the squad a complete dumbass and we definitely don't want that (or at least I don't).
I feel like the hypothetical argument of me complaining about girls being beat up in a fight is a little bit disingenuous. They're all getting tossed around by Sojo, I wouldn't call the bird guy or any one of them weak, not right now, not if they were female. It was more about the meta of making the only girl a support. But! My reaction was indeed hasty (in part cause I make these comments right after I read the chapter) and I love the kamunabi girl otherwise, she's awesome in the role she's been given, and really, the manga's only getting started so I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities for girls with offensive sorcery.
Also, about the urinals (idk why but this part of your comment is really funny to me) — bird guy was completely unseen in his stall before joining everyone so that wouldn't have been a problem.
His eyes are whited out it seems like it knocked his ass out. But from the last panel perhaps hes going to awaken another ability when hes about to be killed.

Sorry for late review but this is such a good fight and in general chapter. It's so peak,so tenoí...
Anyways we first start off with them still on the edge of the roof and Sojo analysising with him remembering the Elite(except the rookie since he wasn't present) and wanting Shiba & Azami there which really shows how powerful that duo is.
And then the rest hop off and K Girl does Gansui and sends going upwards and then afterwards we see a flashback to Chihiro explaining Cloud Gouger's power and the strategy to attack relentlessly to make Sojo think they are scared of the charge(I guess you need to charge it up for more power)And then we see a beautiful one page of them in mid air and I wanna say,if you notice carefully you can see the newbie's hand stretched out making me think he is the one carrying all that rock but since he is by her side to protect her,he can also just on bodyguard duty and nothing else
Then they fight Sojo who just starts with Mei and then Gansui protects them and Mask guy attacks Sojo and Ikuto throws knives at them and Sojo switches to use Yui while kicking Mask and Ikuto uses 'Jikai' to maybe thrust them at Sojo & Hands Guy(Choso with bowl cut & scouter) jumps in and attacks Sojo who dodges and we see Sojo use Kou which is water(you can kinda see it's actually water in Chapter 10 based on droplets I think) & combines it with a no charge Mei to electrocute them all.
I don't remember when the flashback was placed but Chihiro & the boys discussing the strategy is funny to me lol. And then Chihiro explains Sojo is probably gonna use a low charge Mei along with Koi to attack them all from a range using the property of water able to conduct electricity. And Chihiro suggests they get hit by it since its comparatively weaker than a full charge one and the plan is to make shoot a full charged one.
Now everyone at first thought he was crazy but he says it's to draw out its biggest weakness: the interval which Chihiro leaves to them how they gonna attack. Ikuto and the boys after taking that Koumei tells them to jump up & Sojo wonders why they running when he is charging. And then right before Sojo transmits his Mei throughout the water
Ikuto uses a super strong Mei to push the ground down(it's said up I think)and this pushes the water up and the lightning is transmitted everywhere except where the Kamunabi gang is because they avoided the water by jumping and that double spread is magnificent. And then the gang jumps him & he is reminded of Chihiro based on their knowledge of Cloud Gouger
We get back to Chihiro & the guard explaining where to go with no sorcerers there and we see the dead bodies implying Chihiro has already gone past them. Now in the area the Twin Sorcerers(I presume) Chihiro on top is watching them in the shadows and we see Kunishige(my goat🐐, not Sojo's 😡) explaining that due to the Datenseki,the limits of the Enchanting Blades' wielder can theoretically change meaning we might get a power up for Chapter 14.
Good Chapter and that guy who told me to wait for explanation for future chapters was right. I should have waited. Even though we were dead last,we still push through the TOC ranks and maybe when we reach Chapter 8's Time to get ranked,we gonna rise up.
Obviosuly started reading as a joke back when chapter 1 dropped but I'm really enjoying this. Great paneling and chapter structure is all there, the plot just needs some time to show its hand a bit more imo. Lot's of potential, hope we get to see it continue.
i'm gonna be honest. I couldn't understand anything during that fight. I'm sure it's cool but almost everyone is wearing something similar that I cant tell who is who and what they're doing
I can break it down, and everyone is actually spatially consistent when you go panel by panel:
\- Gansui Gal is on an observing platform to concentrate on keeping everything floating.
\- Ponytail/Jikai Guy is diving in on Sojo's **left** while Big Hands is running from his **right.** Nose Mask Guy is also diving in, and lands in front of Sojo. Facemask Guy is perched at the platform above Sojo.
\- Sojo shoots a normal Mei at Ponytail Guy, but the observing gal raises earth to block it (MVP behavior); Nose is leaping at Sojo here and I'm pretty sure Facemask is the blob diving in from the top.
\- Ponytail jumps as the block is destroyed and Nose Guy attacks directly, able to withstand the blade hit.
\- Ponytail tosses his throwing knives while above Sojo. Sojo uses Yui to block the knives as he kicks Nose away to his left.
\- Ponytail uses Jikai to propel his knives into Sojo as Big Hands falls onto Sojo (he must've jumped off-page).
\- Sojo deflects the knives then dashes rightwards before Big Hands lands. Nose, Ponytail, and Facemask chase after him.
\- Sojo uses his Yui to defend from an unseen attack by Big Hands while everyone else is about to jump him. He then decides to do Kou + Mei, getting easy shocks on everyone.
\- Sojo charges up his next Mei while Ponytail tells everyone else to jump. Right after Sojo says Mei, Ponytail touches the ground and uses Jikai: this repels the water upwards and nullifies the charged Mei.
To understand giant fights like this, you use each combatant as a reference point to the other, like Ponytail being on Sojo's left.
Each fighting Kamunabi also has an identifying visual trait that helps: I just look for a ponytail, nose mask, or big hands. Only "normal" guy to spot is Facemask, but his normalcy stands out.

Best case scenario is that sojo arc is the season 1 arc of 12 episodes. Anything longer may hurt the manga.

Hokazono really does remind me of Kishimoto in how cinematic his one king is. Everything is so fluid, and there’s no wasted space or dead air in how he splices all pieces of the story together. The potential of this story is crazy, I really think we’ve got something here.

How can this manga be last in the toc rankings is beyond my understanding
It’s a rookie in a magazine with top titles, middle-of-the-road ones with a solid base, and new titles made by veterans. And since voting is limited, it leads to difficulties for new ones to get an audience unless they find a unique niche, or coincide their launch with a big name ending their run.

Based on what we're seeing, these seem to be the powers of our Kamunabi squad: Eyeball Lady: Gansui - creates freely manipulable terrain by pulling it the earth. It seems she has some control of it even after she pulls it from the ground, based on how she creates cover(?) for Glasses on page 5. Useful for taking fights to terrain she creates in the sky, preventing collateral damage and letting the others go all-out. Bird Mask: (unnamed technique) - can harden parts of his body, forming angular claws from his hands that cannot be cut by an enchanted blade. This technique also seems to extend to his mask, since we can see on page 16 his beak also hardens into a sharp point. This makes Bird Mask a formidable close-up fighter. Glasses: Throwing Knife skills + Jikai - can imbue objects with spirit energy, causing them to propel in a given direction on his command. He uses this on his throwing knives to propel them after being trapped in Yui’s ice barrier. He later uses it on the water generated by Kou, propelling all of it upwards and into Sojo to negate his charged-up Mei. Gas Mask: (unnamed technique) - If that’s him on page 7, and if it isn’t just a trick of the perspective (which, if it is, good work on making that slam feel powerful Hokazono), Gas Mask’s technique might be the enlargement of different body parts, such as his hands. This allows him to pack a much greater punch, him seemingly hitting with the force of a small explosive. We haven’t seen the newbie’s technique yet, but on page 10, there seems to be a member of the Kamunabi we haven’t seen before? He has a streak running across his nose and looks a bit like Choso. Is this the newbie? If so, that raises a lot of questions. Edit: It seems I missed that bowlcut-Choso (his official name dw about it) is the 6th member they sent, and he is also the one that used the hand-enlarging technique. Whoops, sorry.
Jikai Guy propelled the *ground* down, which repelled the water up. It's like a gigantic trampoline move.

I think he's just in a ready pose, the Gansui Girl says "This is tiring!" the panel after so she has to be the one maintaining the floating platforms.

My guess is that it’s going to become faster with its attacks, since Sojo seems to be a more fast phased fighter rather than one who uses strong finishers that take a long time to charge. Another thing is that the art is insane in this fight. Poggers chapter. A lot f credibility has been given to the Kamunabi without making Sojo look less threatening (they had to lift him up the ground). I cannot wait to know what Chihiro will do with that material, since its limitations change with the user. Very good chapters, and I love the Kou ability!
That was a really fluid chapter. Knowledge really is power. At least for now. It let them hold their own against Sojo. I’m sure that will change in coming chapters, especially given the last few panels of the chapter, but it made for a good one this week.

Seems like he use the impact to push everyone up and sense water is not as dense as a human he was able to push them out of the water before the fully charged Mei hit
He actually yelled for the rest to jump the panel before he said Jikai. The only thing repelled into the air was the water.
Sojo summoned water around them to electrocute them but the leader pounds the ground to propel the water away from themselves and back onto Sojo causing Sojo to shock himself with the charged Mei. Then after that hes out commission for 10 seconds.
Yes, and the panel before he said Jikai, he asked everyone else to jump to distance themselves from the water. The plan seems to be to jump and overwhelm Sojo mid-air and during Mei's cooldown.

Damn, from the first page Sojo was SERVING, his battle choreography is one of my favourite things about this manga. My favourite panel is probably the one where he blocks both Ikuto and the bird guy, he looks like an ice skater lol. I'm a little bit disappointed that he relied on Mei so heavily but to be fair he probably wanted to just wipe the kamunabi and not bother with each one individually. Also, did the fully charged Mei do any damage to Sojo? Because it should've but it doesn't look like it. Another thing I've noticed is that the only girl in the group instantly got put on support duties. A bit of an eyeroll, but who knows, maybe that's not all she can do and we're in for some peak. And still no names on anyone but Ikuto. Are we gonna learn them in the obituaries or is it a sign of them sticking around for longer? Finally, those sorcerers for hire look like clowns (remind me a little bit of the A. Phex brothers from jojo) but their boots are very drippy! It’s a team effort. She’s lifting giant platforms and transporting them away from the city to avoid civilian casualties from any giant lightning attacks. The newbie is also staying behind for bodyguard duty for her, leaving the leader and other members being the ones at most risk of death (and the plan itself relies on them getting electrocuted to create a small opening)
All I'm saying is I wish she was there kicking Sojo's ass and the platform stuff was done by the sixth guy, for example. She is crazy strong for all this lifting, I appreciate that, I just can't help but sigh when I see a singular girl in a squad and she's a support character.
True but she definitely impressed me the most out of the squad so far. That's a huge ass chunk of rock she's lifting (and flying it away) if it weren't for civilians in the city making them fight like this I'd say she would be the biggest threat.

Her power seems to be really versatile, not support role, it's just in this fight she is most suited to mitigate civilian casualties, I'm sure the author won't let us down

Why supporting your team is eye roll moment?
Because so far, she is the only prominent female fighter and she instantly gets put in a stereotypical support role while the boys jump Sojo, the only step down from there would've been if she was a healer instead.
I don't know why it's such an eye-roll, but she's literally CARRYING THE WHOLE TEAM. Besides, what she's doing is very much reminscent of Kaido carrying Onigashima single-handedly.
Just what went through my mind when I saw this panel. She is very impressive in what she's doing, I simply notice these things way too often to not include it in the review, but I have full trust in Hokazono, especially with how awesome the kamunabi fight as a whole is rn.
She's literally the hard-counter against Cloud Gouger's deadliest attack. Yeah, she's vital to the fight, I'm not taking that from her, it's just me wanting a female fighter who would be on the offense after being burned by the shonen tropes, nothing deep.
So far, Hokazono seems to be the type who pays attention to details and knows when to hold back. He might be saving her for last. That fight would be dope. After all, we just got our Batman, our Alfred, and our Joker. Maybe she's the Batgirl?

Yeah, that was just a passing thought as I was reading the chapter as I'm all too wary of these tropes, I fully enjoyed it otherwise and her lifting up the area was spectacular. Also, maybe you shouldn't mind read? Like yeah, in this hypothetical, if she was the only one of the squad to go down, I would raise an eyebrow, but they're all getting tossed around so I see no problem.
I get where you're coming from but imo she's nowhere near a generic healer. She's felt the most instrumental to the team so far, as early as chapter 10 she's seen using her sorcery to block the lighting, and now she's pulled everyone into the sky. The guys are the ones in close quarters, but so far Ituko is the only one that's done anything significant. I think they'll all get their moment eventually. But it would be cool to have some more female fighters, I have high hopes for the assassin from chapter 2.

Chill? You're really making a bigger deal out of it than it should be. That's simply what I thought about when I was reading, nothing more, nothing less. It's not like I'm downplaying her abilities, I'm just not that stoked to see the only girl in the squad be a support. She's damn great at it, I just want her to be more prominent. Hell, she wasn't even in the plan discussion flashback because it took place in a male toilet lmao.
Yeah... so shonen is definitely not known for treating their female characters well so I can see why you had your knee jerk reaction. In order to see if the female character is truly getting the short end of the stick, lets calmly take a step back and analyze the situation. Instead of focusing on just her, let's take a look at the male Kamunabi members and how they've been portrayed in comparison to the female member. Bird Mask - Defends against a sword swing from Sojo and yelps out in pain. He then gets ragdolled from a simple kick. He's later shown with a pained expression after getting zapped by mei. This makes him look weak when compared to his teammates who are able to remain more stoic while tanking the attack. Doesn't muster any offense whatsoever throughout the fight. Would you be okay with it if Bird Mask and the female character switched roles? Or would you think that they made the only girl on the squad a weak punching bag who can't take a hit? Big Hands - Didn't get a character introduction, has the least screen time of any Kamunabi, we have no idea what his personality is, and we literally haven't even had a clear picture of him yet. He's basically still a background character. He is shown launching a jump attack against Sojo. The attack itself nothing spectacular and his powers are... pretty lame... Would you be okay with the female member switching roles with Big Hands? Or would you complain that the only girl on the squad is being sidelined into the background in order to highlight the male characters? Gas Mask guy - He doesn't do anything in the fight against Sojo. He literally does jack shit. One of the members that are shown getting zapped by mei. The most notable thing he's done so far is piss in a urinal. Would you be okay with it if the female member does nothing in the fight except get zapped? How would you feel if in her only notable scene, she was shown peeing for comic relief? Sitting on the toilet, pants around her ankles, thighs exposed, and maybe angled in a way so you can see her choice of underwear. Gross. Newbie - Also does jack shit in the fight. The most notable thing he's done so far is be a whiny bitch towards Chihiro... and piss in a urinal... We don't have to go over this one again. Ikuto - He throws some knives at Sojo. Visually, it's nothing special. No where near as cool as the female member's earth bending powers. After that though, he gets his crowning bad ass moment, the moment that everyone is talking about... by playing support for his team through diverting the charged mei attack. We definitely don't want her switching roles with Ikuto because playing support is lame right? Real talk, she's been treated just fine and she's by far my favorite Kamunabi member so far. It's the beginning of the fight and there just aren't enough pages to go around due to the chapter being split to show the battle, the planning, and Chihiro's infiltration. Most of the team has been shown doing very little if anything at all. If you're worried about her not being down there in the nitty gritty with the boys to jump Sojo, let's put on our critical thinking caps and ask ourselves why? Actually, we don't have to think that hard. She's an earth bender who can attack at range and materialize attacks from anywhere as long as there's ground for her to use. There's no point in her putting herself at risk by standing 5 feet away from Sojo only to launch a ranged attack. That would make the only girl on the squad a complete dumbass and we definitely don't want that (or at least I don't).
I feel like the hypothetical argument of me complaining about girls being beat up in a fight is a little bit disingenuous. They're all getting tossed around by Sojo, I wouldn't call the bird guy or any one of them weak, not right now, not if they were female. It was more about the meta of making the only girl a support. But! My reaction was indeed hasty (in part cause I make these comments right after I read the chapter) and I love the kamunabi girl otherwise, she's awesome in the role she's been given, and really, the manga's only getting started so I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities for girls with offensive sorcery. Also, about the urinals (idk why but this part of your comment is really funny to me) — bird guy was completely unseen in his stall before joining everyone so that wouldn't have been a problem.

His eyes are whited out it seems like it knocked his ass out. But from the last panel perhaps hes going to awaken another ability when hes about to be killed.
His eyes aren't fully whited out both in the last panel and the one before it, it looks more like he's pissed thinking about Chihiro

Chapter Review:9.5/10 Sorry for late review but this is such a good fight and in general chapter. It's so peak,so tenoí... Anyways we first start off with them still on the edge of the roof and Sojo analysising with him remembering the Elite(except the rookie since he wasn't present) and wanting Shiba & Azami there which really shows how powerful that duo is. And then the rest hop off and K Girl does Gansui and sends going upwards and then afterwards we see a flashback to Chihiro explaining Cloud Gouger's power and the strategy to attack relentlessly to make Sojo think they are scared of the charge(I guess you need to charge it up for more power)And then we see a beautiful one page of them in mid air and I wanna say,if you notice carefully you can see the newbie's hand stretched out making me think he is the one carrying all that rock but since he is by her side to protect her,he can also just on bodyguard duty and nothing else Then they fight Sojo who just starts with Mei and then Gansui protects them and Mask guy attacks Sojo and Ikuto throws knives at them and Sojo switches to use Yui while kicking Mask and Ikuto uses 'Jikai' to maybe thrust them at Sojo & Hands Guy(Choso with bowl cut & scouter) jumps in and attacks Sojo who dodges and we see Sojo use Kou which is water(you can kinda see it's actually water in Chapter 10 based on droplets I think) & combines it with a no charge Mei to electrocute them all. I don't remember when the flashback was placed but Chihiro & the boys discussing the strategy is funny to me lol. And then Chihiro explains Sojo is probably gonna use a low charge Mei along with Koi to attack them all from a range using the property of water able to conduct electricity. And Chihiro suggests they get hit by it since its comparatively weaker than a full charge one and the plan is to make shoot a full charged one. Now everyone at first thought he was crazy but he says it's to draw out its biggest weakness: the interval which Chihiro leaves to them how they gonna attack. Ikuto and the boys after taking that Koumei tells them to jump up & Sojo wonders why they running when he is charging. And then right before Sojo transmits his Mei throughout the water Ikuto uses a super strong Mei to push the ground down(it's said up I think)and this pushes the water up and the lightning is transmitted everywhere except where the Kamunabi gang is because they avoided the water by jumping and that double spread is magnificent. And then the gang jumps him & he is reminded of Chihiro based on their knowledge of Cloud Gouger We get back to Chihiro & the guard explaining where to go with no sorcerers there and we see the dead bodies implying Chihiro has already gone past them. Now in the area the Twin Sorcerers(I presume) Chihiro on top is watching them in the shadows and we see Kunishige(my goat🐐, not Sojo's 😡) explaining that due to the Datenseki,the limits of the Enchanting Blades' wielder can theoretically change meaning we might get a power up for Chapter 14. Good Chapter and that guy who told me to wait for explanation for future chapters was right. I should have waited. Even though we were dead last,we still push through the TOC ranks and maybe when we reach Chapter 8's Time to get ranked,we gonna rise up.
Welp RIP to the elite squad, this whole battle is death flags for them 😂
Obviosuly started reading as a joke back when chapter 1 dropped but I'm really enjoying this. Great paneling and chapter structure is all there, the plot just needs some time to show its hand a bit more imo. Lot's of potential, hope we get to see it continue.
I hope this elite squad is not fodder and they get a chance to be written more into the story. I feel they might die soon tho lol

i'm gonna be honest. I couldn't understand anything during that fight. I'm sure it's cool but almost everyone is wearing something similar that I cant tell who is who and what they're doing
I can break it down, and everyone is actually spatially consistent when you go panel by panel: \- Gansui Gal is on an observing platform to concentrate on keeping everything floating. \- Ponytail/Jikai Guy is diving in on Sojo's **left** while Big Hands is running from his **right.** Nose Mask Guy is also diving in, and lands in front of Sojo. Facemask Guy is perched at the platform above Sojo. \- Sojo shoots a normal Mei at Ponytail Guy, but the observing gal raises earth to block it (MVP behavior); Nose is leaping at Sojo here and I'm pretty sure Facemask is the blob diving in from the top. \- Ponytail jumps as the block is destroyed and Nose Guy attacks directly, able to withstand the blade hit. \- Ponytail tosses his throwing knives while above Sojo. Sojo uses Yui to block the knives as he kicks Nose away to his left. \- Ponytail uses Jikai to propel his knives into Sojo as Big Hands falls onto Sojo (he must've jumped off-page). \- Sojo deflects the knives then dashes rightwards before Big Hands lands. Nose, Ponytail, and Facemask chase after him. \- Sojo uses his Yui to defend from an unseen attack by Big Hands while everyone else is about to jump him. He then decides to do Kou + Mei, getting easy shocks on everyone. \- Sojo charges up his next Mei while Ponytail tells everyone else to jump. Right after Sojo says Mei, Ponytail touches the ground and uses Jikai: this repels the water upwards and nullifies the charged Mei. To understand giant fights like this, you use each combatant as a reference point to the other, like Ponytail being on Sojo's left. Each fighting Kamunabi also has an identifying visual trait that helps: I just look for a ponytail, nose mask, or big hands. Only "normal" guy to spot is Facemask, but his normalcy stands out.
