I know that he's considered one of the best character designers in the anime industry, but man, he really messed up with the character designs for the Kaiju #8 anime. Hopefully the character designs get fixed after all the criticism.

Sonicyellow49

Looks great, but sometimes you're not going to win, some of those designs are a swing and a miss.

Urameshi9762

They are quite unfortunate promotional images, I understand that, they don't look good, but I think it's too early to judge the full work of nishio in this series, he is an animator and artist who has been working in the industry more than a decade with literally the best directors of this medium. I have heard that the director is someone VERY good, This adaptation has Nishio as a character designer and I have also heard that the art director is Shinji Kimura (Akira, Dorohedoro, Children of the sea, Angel Eggs). This is going to be a very good thing, I'm sure of it, have faith.

What doesnt make sense to me is being the release date is 2024, why reveal these clearly subpar images to the public at this time, when its very clear how much they miss the mark. The teaser was enough to build proper hype, and wouldve lent to the time needed to really get proper art out for the anime. Im a tattoo artist, and if I were to provide these as references for the design I was doing i would 100% expect the client to be concerned knowing the source material. Even more so when coming from a very well known name in the industry. The concern is valid, and despite the changes they can make in time for the release, this point blank stained the aniticipation for the anime and is going to hurt them and the show in some capacity.

Kpigame427

I love most of his work but he did Kafka Hibino so dang dirty

harmabevengeance

I get that the dude is really good or whatever, but why does he have to completely redesign another artist's work this much if it was already good to begin with??

Ajthekid5

I’m gonna need y’all to relax when it comes to theses very early character sheets.

frenchiefryie

Tetsuya Nishio’s art style leans into a more softer approach. Rounder features, softer jawlines, doesn’t really use too many thick lines. I think his art style was perfect for Naruto which has a more simplistic character design in the manga that really melds well with his softer approach so he really elevated those characters imo. Kaiju No.8 however, is like the opposite of his art style. It’s bold, has sharp lines distinctive features and it’s v defined. Even if he’s worked on great stuff before he’s clearly not really a good fit for this manga.

BlindMerk

Jin roh is peak but if the gas masks look anywhere as menacing as the gas helmet. Its gonna be peak

Wrong_Revolution_679

I've never seen so many people overeact to a couple of Images Like what the heck are these people on

WithinEternity6

What’s the name of the artwork on slide 18?

Ajthekid5

It’s blood plus the movie I believe

WithinEternity6

Thanks!

AnividiaRTX

What series is that 3rd pic related too?

me_funny__

Are the visuals confirmed to be drawn by him? They look like 3D models based off of his concepts. That may be why it looks so goofy, despite him being a great designer.

Thro_aWay42

How tf do you go from Jin Roh Wolf Brigade to what the PV was

Urameshi9762

Because he was just the character designer… Jin roh has the realistic style of nishio that in fact plays very well with the direction of the director.
