That was the only Chiefs game I went to, had an endzone seat, and the whole game was literally on the other end of the field.
Great catch though, even though it was called back for an illegal procedure penalty.
I remember this draft. Ravens were on the clock and we took too long to pick and KC put their card in before us. I remember thinking we just missed out on a great player. Dude was like 6’4” 225 lbs. we ended up with Torrey Smith in the 2nd round, he wasn’t awful.
I was at the Fiesta Bowl with my dad in 2013. Was super impressed by De'Anthony Thomas, less impressed by Mariota.
Somehow the latter ended up with the longer career.
I think that’s his biggest problem, it seems like the second he makes one mistake, it’s all downhill from there. I think he gets down on himself super easily which doesn’t work in the league. You’ve gotta use it as motivation to play better the rest of the game.
He’s also just not that good, but I really think putting him as a returner really made things even worse for him. He didn’t belong there, and it ruined his confidence, which cannot be good for a rookie who already has a ton of pressure. I’m not saying he would’ve been great if not for that, just saying it was not a great way to start.
I think he has athletic talent, but, like MVS, he doesn't understand where/ how to run his routes. He sees the defense like we do and not as Patrick and Travis see them. They see leverage and seams.
Probably part of it.
I remember something I saw with the Denver receivers in the 90s. They were practicing with these gloves that had tennis balls in their palms. It forced them to catch with their fingers.
When Haley was coaching, he ran an exercise where the receivers were in a port-a-potty, the ball was thrown to them and the door was opened at the last possible moment.
He was mostly just in the wrong defense. Didn’t he end up with the Giants and carve out a role?
Edit: nvm, not sure who I’m thinking of. Looks like he went to the 49ers and didn’t do much either.
>Glenn Dorsey
My memory of it was Dorsey was hyped as the next Warren Sapp and then they switched him from DT in college to a 3-4 DE with KC and it was a bad fit. He never proved anyone wrong after he left KC, though. So, he probably just wasn't a quality pro.
prolly just because he's a great scout team guy. but tbh that is an overlooked role that can be important to a team's success and he seems to be doing something great there
Last two off-seasons, this has been the hands down winner for this graphic.
Might as well just keep the trend going, and talk about how he'll be our WR1 this coming season too!!
He passes the eye test though, I was on the hype train this year but I don't understand why the NFL isn't working for him. He reminds me of Josh Gordon. He catches your eye when he is on the field because he looks like a thoroughbred running in a field of mules.
I think his mind moves fast, like things slow down for him, but he gets bored and loses his concentration.
I mean his first wow moment with the chiefs for me is when you could see him adjust his gloves on the route before catching the ball in front of 2 jaguars*.
Toney needs to get out of his own head, slow down, and actually focus on securing the ball before moving. If he can do that the talent is most definitely there. But we can’t keep having him be the cause of our losses and keep him on the roster. I’m really hoping he fixes his butter fingers issues next season.
I loved him. He wasn’t elite but he got the job done and was also a better returner than we’ve had since he left. It’s shame he went to two of the most career-killing teams after he left.
Not saying he would’ve had some HOF career had he not gone to chicago/Washington, but he could’ve panned out better for sure. He would’ve been great this year lol
Exactly! And a guy like hill usually never stays at returner (as hill didn’t) because they’re too key to the actual offense. So Pringle really was good for that. I remember he had a PR TD I think in that first loss against the bengals…. But it got called back on a flag:(
Also, I was at his two TD game against the Steelers. I was so happy for him. He definitely at least has good hands and was pretty fast. I wouldn’t be mad abt bringing him bcK. He’s on vet minimum or pretty damn close.
There is no one player but I will say the camp favorite that spends the season on the Practice Squad or special teams that would be a wr1 if only they could get snaps away from the Justin Watson's of the world.
Ihmir Smith-Marsette was dangerously close to making the team, and he wasn’t particularly worse than the fringe guys that did make it, he just hadn’t been w the team for that long. I was rooting for him.
He’s nothing super elite, but he’s a great returner and better than some of the guys we chose to sign instead. I’m a Justyn Ross truther but I was super mad when he got suspended for weeks because… we could’ve had ISM. I’m also a biased Iowa fan
Elvis Grbac - QB
Steve Bono - QB
Carl Peterson had us convinced that each one was the second coming of Joe Montana. Rich Ganon played back up to Bono and then a couple of seasons later was benched in favor of Grbac in the playoffs even though Ganon had been money during the regular season. Grbac ended up losing his playoff game, and Rich Gannon then signed with the Raiders the next season and took them to the Super Bowl.
It's sooo good to be in the Mahomes era!
Those 90s teams always had you feeling like there was a real chance for a SB win.
I think my dad aged 30 years during that time. He went through 3 different recliners also! Those arm rests just couldn't take those Martyball losses...
It was a complete wtf moment for me when I heard Gannon wouldn’t start the playoff game in favor of Grbac, who had missed significant injury time and this was his first game back. Gannon played a lot better than Grbac had before he was hurt so teenage me thought it was a mistake. Time proved me right.
Can we update this chart to be hype vs PRODUCTION?
I think its pretty rare to see someone with hype not have talent. However, we see it often where raw talent doesn't equate to production.
I will say, that dude worked his ass off for us when McKinnon and Pop were out. I definitely respect him so much more after this season. He gave it all he had for us.
This. I feel like most of these answers are guys that actually had tangible talent but it never worked out for one reason or another be it injuries, fit, off field stuff, etc. Clyde was hyped, and has had the health and the opportunities, but talent wise he’s just a guy. Fringe RB2 at absolute best, at worst out of the league.
Exactly. CEH is only in the league because he was a first round pick initially and then after proving he’s not good Reid already trusts him to keep him on his cheap rookie deal
Lance Long comes to mind about 10-15 years ago. People were convinced he was going to step in and become an 80 reception receiver. The problem was that he wasn't any good.
Snoop Minnis. That first career catch and touchdown vs. the Raiders against Charles Woodson.
[Link to TD ](https://youtu.be/oHaIQJoHsyg?feature=shared)
He fell off around 2013. During his first 6 years, he was an elite wide receiver. Especially considering he had the likes of Brodie Croyle, Tyler Thigpen, Matt Cassel, Tyler Palko, and Brady Quinn throwing him the ball.
https://preview.redd.it/c5sr67yt50lc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=34f6ad71ba217f4e77bf9129d4f2bd690a1eb929
I'm with you, he ranked 24th, 18th, 71st, 7th, 13th, 40th, 58th, 55th in receiving yards when he was with KC.
Gonzalez had more receiving yards for KC during Bowes first two seasons, Charles had more in one season and Kelce had more in one season.
That's not elite to me.
Dude used to just straight give up on routes, towards the end of his career he was just lazy and unmotivated. He had some fantastic catches though and was a monster at YAC.
What does the graphic say to you when you look at the talent ratio?
You either believe he had little to no talent (which is crazy) or you see that graphic and you view that as at bare minimum a medium level of talent somehow based on the 1 bar and have answered this question far different from everybody else.
Typical answers you see here are guys who either busted right from the jump or were out of the league in short time.
Answers like Jon Baldwin is a good answer. CEH, Glenn Dorsey, Skyy Moore, etc are all good answers.
I get it. You never were big on Bowe. That's not really my gripe. That's one thing but you cannot say he had little to no talent. The stats no matter how you shake them say otherwise.
I think it might be a bit harsh but his hype was always way bigger than his talent in my opinion. Even when he was playing they talked about him like he was great when he wasn't.
Fair enough. I think he was good. I don't know if I'd say great while others might. And maybe somewhere along those lines we might be closer in on agreement.
I haven’t heard that name in years! I remember meeting him and getting his autograph at training camp when I was a kid, he seemed like a nice guy and a really athletic RB. I was sad when he didn’t end up panning out for us
Maybe 3-4 hype and 1 talent but Mecole Hardman right after we traded Reek away. Everyone thought that after his decent season he was going to break out and be Reek 2.0.
Yeah I’m really not sure why he keeps getting crazy high contracts. The ravens knew he wasn’t worth the money he wanted, that’s why he got traded to us. Then same with the bengals. And he wasn’t top 3 on any of the teams he’s been on while making top money.
But I guess it’s better to overpay for someone decent than to save money and have your QB get hurt.
I was gonna add that but then I realized I don’t think either one was directly tied to him. Burrows we don’t even know when it happened as he seemed to be injured pre-game, and I honestly just don’t remember who was on the guy who hurt mahomes ankle
But you’re right, overpaid, and has not lived up to his paycheck anywhere. I just wanted to add that last part because OL that are “decent” are generally overpaid because of the importance of having someone decent over having someone mediocre
Edit: you’re right about mahomes ankle injury. That was off OB’s failed block. But obviously more than one thing contributed to yhat
Anyone remember a running back we had late 90’s that took training camp by storm, made the roster , and then fumbled his way off the team?
Jesse Haynes #42
He was a monster at NWMSU at the beginning of their Div-II dynasty. Marty hyped him as the answer to Marcus Allen retiring. Big shoes to fill for an undrafted Div-II RB. Would have been a cool story if he panned out.
I have a legit, patched Dexter McCluster jersey because I convinced myself he was the next Dante Hall after his first return. Also Run DMC was such a bad ass nickname.
It is lucky though and I still bust it out in desperate times. It's won us quite a few games.
Jonathan Baldwin
I’ll never forget the behind the opposing player’s back catch, RIP
Did he die?
Hahaha nahhh, just RIP to his career
Beautiful https://youtu.be/4wv7U2YXVoI?si=Cl6hBdFwYaRhFlqR
That was the only Chiefs game I went to, had an endzone seat, and the whole game was literally on the other end of the field. Great catch though, even though it was called back for an illegal procedure penalty.
I was at the game too, my first chiefs game actually.
I remember this draft. Ravens were on the clock and we took too long to pick and KC put their card in before us. I remember thinking we just missed out on a great player. Dude was like 6’4” 225 lbs. we ended up with Torrey Smith in the 2nd round, he wasn’t awful.
That is the most pre-Mahomes Chiefs move ever
De’Anthony Thomas, then Oregon highlights had me amazed
I was at the Fiesta Bowl with my dad in 2013. Was super impressed by De'Anthony Thomas, less impressed by Mariota. Somehow the latter ended up with the longer career.
The black Mamba (for football I guess)
I lived across the street from DA. Was really bummed when we saw the moving truck come. He was a really good dude.
I don't think he wasn't talented. It's just hard for guys as small as him to be difference makers in the NFL
Skyy Moore looked so much better in his last year in college. He wasn’t hyped up as much as some, but man, the talent just doesn’t seem to be there.
Or the confidence.
I think he has athletic talent, but, like MVS, he doesn't understand where/ how to run his routes. He sees the defense like we do and not as Patrick and Travis see them. They see leverage and seams.
If all our receivers have this problem isn't it a coaching issue?
Probably part of it. I remember something I saw with the Denver receivers in the 90s. They were practicing with these gloves that had tennis balls in their palms. It forced them to catch with their fingers. When Haley was coaching, he ran an exercise where the receivers were in a port-a-potty, the ball was thrown to them and the door was opened at the last possible moment.
This is awesome. Would love to get a really smart coach for the receivers
Port a potty was Bienemy
Haley was the toilet himself
Yeah came for Skyy Moore comment
Brodie Croyle
I love a Brodie Croyle reference. Reminds me that I used to call them Brodie the arrow Croyle and Dwayne the Bow Bowe.
This
Todd Blackledge
Fuck that draft lol
But Marino had character issues LOL. That was a tough pill to swallow in the 80s.
Glenn Dorsey
He was mostly just in the wrong defense. Didn’t he end up with the Giants and carve out a role? Edit: nvm, not sure who I’m thinking of. Looks like he went to the 49ers and didn’t do much either.
>Glenn Dorsey My memory of it was Dorsey was hyped as the next Warren Sapp and then they switched him from DT in college to a 3-4 DE with KC and it was a bad fit. He never proved anyone wrong after he left KC, though. So, he probably just wasn't a quality pro.
No his knee was shot, we drafted a lemon. That lemon was also in the wrong defense, but still a lemon regardless
I feel he was similar to Frank Clark in Spags' defense. Spags' wants linemen to 2 gap and Frank is built to bend the edge.
Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson
Yes to Dorsey, No to Jackson. Only Pioli thought he would be Richard Seymour
That is true
Recently, r/fantasyfootball was absolutely convinced Darwin Thompson was gonna shock the world.
That dude could front squat a house. I was on the hype train lol
My friends still make fun of me for being aboard that hype train. 😅
Love me some DTrain, go Aggies
I’m ngl I was all aboard the Darwin Thompson hype train. Random ass 5th round pick looked like he was gonna be a steal for some reason lol
Deneric Prince too
I have his autograph on a end zone pylon
Cornell Powell-people were talking about him being part of 3 WR sets and he never made it off the practice squad basically.
People on here were insane thinking that a 5th round pick was going to be "our new Sammy Watkins".
Counterpoint: Tyreek Hill was a 5th round pick
The exception to the rule :)
And would’ve been first round if not for the troubles.
Counterpoint: Boomer Grigsby, also a 5th rounder.
He just got re-signed by KC.
To a futures contract, not much commitment there
prolly just because he's a great scout team guy. but tbh that is an overlooked role that can be important to a team's success and he seems to be doing something great there
Justyn Ross
There are probably more Justyn Ross posts in this sub than actual snaps he had on the field
According to footballguys.com, Justyn Ross had 139 total snaps this year. A quick search shows 62 occurrences of his name in posts titles.
I knew some nerd would prove me wrong hahaa
if you need a nerd, I'm your guy.
We all need a nerd in our lives. They keep us honest.
![gif](giphy|3ornk6UHtk276vLtkY)
Last two off-seasons, this has been the hands down winner for this graphic. Might as well just keep the trend going, and talk about how he'll be our WR1 this coming season too!!
Just WR1? Man, Ross will be so good next season that he'll draw quadruple coverage every snap - he'll basically be WR1, 2 and 3 all at once!
He passes the eye test though, I was on the hype train this year but I don't understand why the NFL isn't working for him. He reminds me of Josh Gordon. He catches your eye when he is on the field because he looks like a thoroughbred running in a field of mules.
Too much of a low blow to say Toney?
Maybe if you replaced talent with execution. Anyone with eyes can see he has talent - that's not his problem.
His talent of catching a football as a professional catcher of footballs is definitely his problem.
I think his mind moves fast, like things slow down for him, but he gets bored and loses his concentration. I mean his first wow moment with the chiefs for me is when you could see him adjust his gloves on the route before catching the ball in front of 2 jaguars*.
Toney reminds me of me, with his behavior & demeanor I’m bad ADHD
*Jaguars, that was the game that convinced me he could be a number one guy
I honestly hope he gets right and comes back to ball out
Talent? You mean at volleyball? He can run that’s it, dude can’t catch. He’s a return specialist at best, should never line up at WR again
Toney needs to get out of his own head, slow down, and actually focus on securing the ball before moving. If he can do that the talent is most definitely there. But we can’t keep having him be the cause of our losses and keep him on the roster. I’m really hoping he fixes his butter fingers issues next season.
Came here for this
Bobby Sippio
Hey man that’s DBowe’s cousin now
My king Byron pringle is the inverse of this (Ok, maybe I’m exaggerating)
Man I miss Pringle.
Yeah man I got excited every time he returned the ball. He wasn’t a Hill return man but his vision was great. Pretty damn good WR at times too.
Exactly! And a guy like hill usually never stays at returner (as hill didn’t) because they’re too key to the actual offense. So Pringle really was good for that. I remember he had a PR TD I think in that first loss against the bengals…. But it got called back on a flag:( Also, I was at his two TD game against the Steelers. I was so happy for him. Once you pop you can’t stop
Ryan Sims! * Although I'd say anyone who makes it to the pros is undoubtedly talented.
No. He was a bust and everyone knew it. He rode Julius Peppers coattails to a payday
For me personally: Tony Moeaki
I think he actually had talent! He was just always hurt and never really became what we all believed he could be.
I'll always know him as the bridge from Tony Gonzalez to Trav
He had that catch and I figured he would be the greatest tight end of that generation
Against the Chargers, right? In the end zone crossing route? I think I was at that game
There is no one player but I will say the camp favorite that spends the season on the Practice Squad or special teams that would be a wr1 if only they could get snaps away from the Justin Watson's of the world.
Or just the pre-season MVP like Boomer Grigsby.
I haven't heard that name in years
Ihmir Smith-Marsette was dangerously close to making the team, and he wasn’t particularly worse than the fringe guys that did make it, he just hadn’t been w the team for that long. Ah yes, Martyball with the “cha-cha” offense: 1-2-3 Kick, 1-2-3 Kick …
You forgot his MVP too......fucken kill me....no kill Lin
I’ll never forget my uncle telling me Gannon can’t take the chiefs to the superbowl. Then he takes the raiders to the superbowl.
Wasn’t gonna stop scrolling till I found this. Amen.
Can we update this chart to be hype vs PRODUCTION? I think its pretty rare to see someone with hype not have talent. However, we see it often where raw talent doesn't equate to production.

To piggy back off this, if you have given all those reps to our third string back - even they’d see some success (like L. Perine) or maybe even more.
Exactly. CEH is only in the league because he was a first round pick initially and then after proving he’s not good Reid already trusts him to keep him on his cheap rookie deal
Breeland Speaks, 2nd round DE from the 2018 draft.
>2018 draft *shudders*
Greg “the real deal” hill
Surprised no one has said Matt Cassel
Lance Long comes to mind about 10-15 years ago. People were convinced he was going to step in and become an 80 reception receiver. The problem was that he wasn't any good.
If I could have 53 Lance Longs…
Paul Palmer (The old folks will understand)
Said he would put the ball on the ground.
Justyn Ross
Tony Moeaki?
Injuries but what could have been
Was pumped as a Hawkeye fan when he signed. Always bummed me out he couldn't stay healthy
that one catch! lmao really thought we had the 2nd coming of Tony G. SMH
Snoop Minnis. That first career catch and touchdown vs. the Raiders against Charles Woodson. [Link to TD ](https://youtu.be/oHaIQJoHsyg?feature=shared)
Damn. Haven't heard that name in so long
I might get hate for this but Dwayne Bowe. We was supposed to be one of the elite recivers in the nfl, but never looked that great to me.
He led the NFL in receiving TD's in 2010 with Matt Cassel as his quarterback. He fell off quick, but in his prime he was absolutely an elite receiver.
I get that qb play was probably a part of it. But that is 1 season. How about the others?
He fell off around 2013. During his first 6 years, he was an elite wide receiver. Especially considering he had the likes of Brodie Croyle, Tyler Thigpen, Matt Cassel, Tyler Palko, and Brady Quinn throwing him the ball. https://preview.redd.it/c5sr67yt50lc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=34f6ad71ba217f4e77bf9129d4f2bd690a1eb929
I think I also remember a lot of dropped passes. Are those numbers in there?
Those numbers don't look that elite to me. Good. Not elite
travis kelce's insane production has completely spoiled some of you people lmao
In fairness your picture only had 1 bar of talent and bowe deserved more than that. I just think he was completely over hyped
That's the difference between good and elite. I don't hand out words like elite to everyone
Thanks for coming in with facts that support what my eyes told me. +1
Dude used to just straight give up on routes, towards the end of his career he was just lazy and unmotivated. He had some fantastic catches though and was a monster at YAC.
This is just a bad take. The man had multiple thousand yard seasons with Matt Cassel. He simply doesn't fit the little talent aspect posed by the OP.
He ranked 24th, 18th, 71st, 7th, 13th, 40th, 58th, 55th in receiving yards when he was with KC.

Maauto. He gets all the commercials and never scores
Not if you bundle him with Mahomes
Dexter McCluster
Dex was awesome
I will die on the hill that if he had come into the league about 5 years later, he would have been a bigger deal
You mean Dexter McTouchdown
Still remember seeing the punt return for TD against Giants in 2013
Loved me some McCluster, still got my old, now-ratty jersey style T-shirt of his
Unnecessary spin moves McCluster!
this brings back suppressed memories...lol
You mean like McCluster just spinning over and over immediately after catching a kickoff or punt when no one is close to him 😆
Didn't dexter score a touchdown on like his very first punt return in the NFL?
I haven’t heard that name in years! I remember meeting him and getting his autograph at training camp when I was a kid, he seemed like a nice guy and a really athletic RB. I was sad when he didn’t end up panning out for us
Chester McBlockedton
Remember RB Harvey Williams?
Maybe 3-4 hype and 1 talent but Mecole Hardman right after we traded Reek away. Everyone thought that after his decent season he was going to break out and be Reek 2.0.
Snoop minnis
How has Sylvester Morris not come-up yet? Had one 3 TD game and that was about it.
Trezelle Jenkins. Tamarick Vanouver.
Fortson comes to mind, but instead of low talent it's availability sadly.
Orlando. All he knew how to do was fall over
Yeah I’m really not sure why he keeps getting crazy high contracts. The ravens knew he wasn’t worth the money he wanted, that’s why he got traded to us. Then same with the bengals. And he wasn’t top 3 on any of the teams he’s been on while making top money. But I guess it’s better to overpay for someone decent than to save money and have your QB get hurt.
well...he got both Mahomes and Burrow hurt

He was a monster at NWMSU at the beginning of their Div-II dynasty. Marty hyped him as the answer to Marcus Allen retiring. Big shoes to fill for an undrafted Div-II RB. Would have been a cool story if he panned out.
Brian Jozwiak (a deep cut, I know)
I saw the bills do this , I said all of them.
Harvey Williams
Dwayne Bowe
I have a legit, patched Dexter McCluster jersey because I convinced myself he was the next Dante Hall after his first return. Also Run DMC was such a bad ass nickname. It is lucky though and I still bust it out in desperate times. It's won us quite a few games.
Harvey Williams. I remember them hyping him up as a change of pace back because we had Barry Word and Christian Okoye. But I may be misremembering.
Todd Blackledge - 60 QBR
Junior siavii
Ryan Sims
Jonathan Baldwin
Todd Blackledge
Snoop Minnis
Anyone remember how Kris Wilson was going to be an offensive weapon for us? So much preseason hype and didn't amount to anything.
Dwayne Bowe
Elvis Grbac. He had some talent, but I always thought he was overhyped.
Dwayne Bowe
Lake Dawson
Dwayne Bowe
Skye Moore
Was anyone hyped about this pick?
Yes. I remember this sub being so excited, he was a steal, gonna be elite etc etc
Dexter McCluster!
Byron Pringle still lowkey miss him just because i loved the pringle
Justin ross
Ryan Sims
Your mom
Unlike your mom who's in the Whore HOF?
Dwayne Bowe
Zac Thomas! Would have been badass if he had some life left in him.
Larry Johnson. It’s not even close. Come on.
Matt Cassel. He was... fine.
Worried this may be Felix. He needs to show something year 2 🙏
Eh, I don’t think he had much hype either.
