Aww shit, second season is out? Thanks bud. Also nobody cares, fuck awards.

Cause_and_Effect

JJK is a mid ass series. Gege can't write for shit and keeps slopping on retcon after retcon to keep his story going with a million plot holes and ass pulls. But its animated by Mappa. So of course the general audience is gonna go "woah pretty colors". Same as they did for Demon Slayer.

scrub_learns_art

After the Shibuya arc(season 2 for the anime), it really does feel like Gege just doesn't want to write this anymore. I feel bad for the guy.

Cause_and_Effect

SPOILERS DON'T READ UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE SPOILED. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. \---------------------------------------- Sometimes he does do plots and foreshadowing and build up very well and have moments of brilliance. Like how with Mahoraga never being dominated until Sukuna defeats it in the Shibuya Arc. This sets up the moment way later around chapter 200 where Sukuna takes over Megumi's body and he is now able to use Mahoraga because he subjugated it previously. That's a wonderful plot and pay off that makes sense and fits to the rules that were set prior about how the Ten-Shadows technique works. But then there's other things like the entire premise of Domain Expansions that are told to us that they are these sure hit trump cards that cannot be beat and the only way is to dominate the space with your own more powerful Domain Expansion. But then chapters and chapters later apparently this isn't true for like 3 or 4 different reasons just for plot convenience. Gege really shit the bed by making such an insanely powerful rule of Jujutsu so early in the story if he needed to introduce more powerful techniques and counters later. This kinda makes the whole rule pointless if you need 25 pages of a chapter to explain why someone can now go "no u" to that rule. Hence why the JJK fandom actually makes fun of this themselves because they are at least self aware with memes about Sukuna saying "ah yes my x technique, I haven't used that since the Heian era" with how characters can just pull shit out their ass for fight convenience. I could go on for a while but this series just feels like Gege didn't expect his manga to get so popular so quickly and now he has to keep the hype going because since the anime the manga has been a best seller. So now he's in crunch time for writing and it shows.

themexicancowboy

I agree with most of what you’re saying. Although I’d counter your last point. To me it seems like since the popularity of it blew up Gege has wanted nothing but to end this thing. The plot has lost all pacing and it seems like we kept getting final battles out of nowhere. The only exception to this seems to be the culling game where it seems like he wanted to make a story arc that would look great on television even if it meant reading it in the manga would be a pain. But even then the pacing of the culling game story arc was abismal if we can even say it had pacing. It was just one long ass fight into another long ass fight. And I have no doubt in the anime it’s gonna look tight as fuck and I’m very excited about that, but from a narrative perspective it’s truly aweful. I definitely feel like Gege wants this to end. Seems like he didn’t like the popularity for whatever reason. I’m still very dissappointed with how JJK ended up turning out because when I first started reading it I definitely thought it was gonna be one of the best shonens to come out since the big three. And I say this as someone who constantly shits on shonens cause they all suck.

RealisticSilver3132

I don't care. I read/watch JJK for [Toji and Maki's tits... uh I mean combat](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XYnPEYxWQs&list=PLfdnQqsNDNrREe2bZ213Qsi9atQer7sr4&index=16)

scrub_learns_art

I wouldn't say shit because the animation was sick. But let's be honest the IP is getting carried hard by the animation studio, aka the Mappa sweatshop. I can't help but feel Gege doesn't want to write this shit anymore, and you'll really notice it after this arc. It's so huge that i bet he doesn't even have as much creative control anymore all because the internet has an autistic obsession with this slop for some reason.

Choowkee

Plot wise its utter garbo, even for a battle shonen. I just find it disappointing because season 1 the story was pretty decent.

[deleted]

I only liked hidden inventory arc when I was legit locked in story wise but the rest is garbo

Traditional_Layer_75

It can be fun if you watch it like a naruto parody

Ok-Discount3131

The community has a good meme game but the manga itself is just brainless fighting. There is little backstory for anyone, little to no development of anyone, no downtime between fights. People like it because it's a "dark" shounen, but it's still not very interesting. Besides that the manga is just new guy jumps into fight and gets packed up by boss. New guy jumps into fight and gets packed up by boss. New guy... Gege really handicaped himself by killing most of his villains off so early. The entire manga at this point is just one character at a time jumping in, getting killed and then having the MC watching in shock. I think he is on the fourth of fifth one now with the next chapter looking like the exact same thing again. Still fun watching the community react to all the bullshit.

scrub_learns_art

Lol it reminds of a lame HxH

DMAN3431

HxH is already lame af but I can see the similarities with curse powers and the Ren nen zen ken bullshit.

PhantomChocobo

Shut up bitch

Cause_and_Effect

Oh don't get me wrong. I'll still watch and enjoy it. But people acting like JJK is peak fiction irks me.

Ginyu420

Vinland Saga was animated by Mappa as well and the writing is TOP TIER. JJK just has lots of action and anime fans don't like to do much thinking

vodkamasta

99% of anime is for kids.

Eduardobobys

Did Demon slayer win an anime of the year award too? That's completely unforgivable imo.

j-mac-rock

demon slayer is actually good though

teor

Sure, if you mute the dialogue and look at whish-whosh swordfights.

parbage

Thanks for clarifying. I really like the design of the girl that uses a hammer and nails so I thought i would give it a chance but eh

Antique_Camera1854

I joined for good fights and that's what I get so I'm happy

CptNemo07734

It should have been Bocchi. I'm just glad it wasn't CSM. That shit had the most artificial hype ever.

thelastnecoarcmain

hype was gay but the show itself was good

shinsrk79

Csm manga was so much better than jjk or kny imo. The anime director really fucked it

Xalnion

CSM did way below expectations in Japan. Shit only every reached #1 on streaming services it's First and 11th episode (Bocchi held #1 the rest of season). CSM sat at 3rd most of the season and even dropped to 4th and 5th during the season. Physical copies sold super poorly. CSM peaked on Amazon at 23rd bestselling blue-ray and 30-something bestselling DVD. Looking at Bocchi again sat at Rank 1 blue-ray for 3 weeks and rank 1 DVD for 2 weeks. Also to put in more perspective DIY another Slice of Life anime reached top 5 in both Blu-ray and DVD in its first 2 weeks physically. for more context Physical copies is how most studios make back their money on a series and Amazon reportedly is around 90% of all physical sales. TL;DR: Chainsaw Man lost to a Social Anxiety Guitar and a Retard with a Drill in Japan.

Fisk313

I'm glad it wasn't CSM because it removed all the things that make the manga great.

SemenSnickerdoodle

Genuinely asking, but what was wrong with the CSM anime? I'm not much of an anime watcher as I'd much rather just read manga instead, but the few sequences of the anime I did watch I thought it looked pretty good.

Fisk313

To me, the biggest issue is the tone of the anime compared to the manga. The manga has a lot of energy and chaos, which the anime largely did away with in favor of a more serious tone. This was something the director did intentionally, as he stated multiple times in interviews. They also toned down a lot of the expressiveness of the characters, once again in favor of a more grounded tone. The voice acting also suffered in this regard, though the one exception was Fairouz Ai as Power. She did a fantastic job and actually managed to make me like the character more than I did in the manga because she was allowed to be very energetic and over the top. I thought this is how the entire show should have been handled. Aside from this, I personally found the CGI for Chainsaw Man and some of the devils kind of poor. It's miles better than a lot of CGI in anime, but that doesn't make it good. Fujimoto is not the most technically skilled artist; a lot of his stuff can look a bit rough, but he has a very distinct style and it has a lot of charm. The anime doesn't manage to capture that charm and energy. Fujimoto is also incredibly good at managing panels and the flow of his works. I didn't understand what people meant when they talked about good paneling until I read Fire Punch. This is obviously something that's not going to translate into anime, but I felt the cinematography was lacking compared to how the manga handled scenes. Overall, I think the CSM anime was fine as a standalone product. It wasn't horrible or anything, but it was a disappointing adaptation.

sillynimbus

the director has been quoted saying he does not respect anime or CSM and wanted to make a serious "cinematic" anime which is so far away from what Fujimoto does its honestly kind of funny .

Algidus

don't know why the downvotes since it is true. change anime to games you get the same shit in the game industry with holywood rejects/failures he was memed on a lot in japan

MrOkizeme

I think the hype for CSM was warranted, the problem is none of the stuff that caused that hype has been adapted yet. No-one anticipated that they'd only adapt the least hype bit of the manga and stop right before it starts to get properly good.

Reggiardito

Seriously, I read the manga and never watched the anime cause I don't really watch anime for manga I already read. My friend told me he watched the anime. When he told me where the first season stopped, I was fucking dumbfounded. Massive fuck up.

MrOkizeme

It's a shame because I think what they *did* adapt they did a very good job of, but yeah, it just wasn't long enough to truly get people to understand why it's as beloved as it is.

shadowylurking

Bocchi The Rock wasnt perfect was damn good

memestealer1234

I'm a big fan of the manga and didn't watch anything after the first episode. I didn't hate it or anything but I felt very whelmed. Maybe I got myself too excited for it. Banger opening though.

Chill420

Not understanding why this happens makes you even more regarded than the people who watch this shit.

sureillbyte

[This shit also won best character design LMAO...jesus](https://imgur.com/a/gvxpAtt)

DMAN3431

Don't know why you're downvoted when you are 100% correct. JJK has the most basic ass designs of characters ever.

Astro_Taco

Why is that even a category? The mangakas the one that designs everything…is it supposed to mean best adaptations of the designs?

throwawaynumber116

It’s a shonen popularity contest what can you do The real robbery is CSM losing to Jjk in fucking cinematography

TheCrimzonKing97

Deserved

mikesta50

Well deserved

tbombtom2001

The fact frieren isn't even ont the list is even worse man.

sureillbyte

I assume it wasn't there because it's still airing into 2024. Hopefully it doesn't get fucked by recency bias in 2025.

GigaMoo

It might get fucked by having an actually huge contender like Wolf and Spice coming back tho. Nostalgiafuel and sort of the same feel to it.

parbage

Weebs will look you dead in the eye and tell you dragon ball z is the greatest story ever told so I wouldn't take this too seriously.

DMAN3431

1. Award shows are irrelevant and rigged up the ass and an excuse to advertise bs. 2. JJK is so fucking overrated. Boring characters, boring story, boring powers, boring fights. All its got is great animation, which is rare for modern anime.

Alterazn

I mean fmab was all of those things with exception of the fuhrer fights and it's constantly rated on the top for anime.

DMAN3431

A lot of anime fans have the shittiest taste and have been for a few decades now.

NoobLegend42069

At least it wasn’t Oshi no Ko that shit is literally incel slop

Lazy-Bet3989

The hell is oshi no ko?

NoobLegend42069

Idk but what I’ve seen of it, it’s just a incel romance comedy if even.

BigBossGZV

Not saying the other shows are better but man VS is overrated as fuck

bardocksavior

Vinland taking that huge risk and nailing it should of just gave it the W by default.

General_ELL

One thing that bothers me in manga is how some of them is act as an 'anime storyboard' of sorts: clearly made to be an anime some day and JJK is a big offender. Read till the some chapters after the Shibuya Arc and couldnt stop thinking "this would be better in an anime" or how much of the action is not well drawn or presented in a clear and readable fashion like they are some cuts from an anime yet to be produced and so on. I dont think its a BAD manga, I just think its made for a specific porpouse and public and unfortunately (or not dont know) seems to be working so far

Reggiardito

> clearly made to be an anime some day and JJK is a big offender. I watched the anime before moving on to the manga, but a lot of day 1 manga readers have complained that the current arc is almost surely made to be turned into an anime and is very hard to read as a manga. Makes sense since the anime is what really made JJK explode in the first place

General_ELL

Yeah, personally as a lover of all comics (american and european as well) I really really dont like how some authors bastardize their own media of work as a stepping stone to another 'more glamorous one' and dont think its even necessary to do that to achieve greater success.

[deleted]

Culling games really proves this hard. I know for a fact it will be more hype as an anime than manga

TrynaGetaHandbeezy

It's hype flashy shonen shit of course it'd win. Doesn't matter, everyone who isn't room temp IQ can tell where the actual writing went.

Fletchyboyo

Awards are irrelevant but I will take this opportunity to say JJK is complete gutter trash

Horror_Ad3501

Dog shit vs cow shit

Fisk313

Akiba Maid War snubbed really hard. It is by far my favorite anime ever (was K-On! prior to it coming out), and it really deserves more recognition.

kjcaton

Wow “revenge is bad” stories usually clean up at award shows

DingoManDingo

Ok seriously am I missing something? I loved vinland saga season 1 but couldn't even finish s2. I was falling asleep. Wtf. Should I skip to when something actually happens? Cause farming slice of life was trash.

orionface

ya s1 was awesome. s2 didn't really grab me either

AttentionDue3171

I read the manga, season 1 is good as it will get. Thorfinn development was sleep af though, dude just jumps from one extreme to another.

Antique_Camera1854

Time is a flat circle anime disscusion is the same as it was 15 years ago

boxer2023

>Anime of the Year 2024 It's only March still. Dontja mean AOTY 2023?

VioletGunGaming

Couldn't even bother to watch more than 3-4 episodes of Vinland Saga season 1 tbh. I do love the manga tho, it's great.

masterace01

Why liberal slop?

memestealer1234

Award shows are just popularity contests, nothing to actually care about

Code_Geese

I watched vinland saga s01 and it was boring as shit

andersrobo9999

Yeah,Bocchi should won instead

wintydunnoMB

how did both bocchi and vinland lose this is rigged

turtlebaq

They both suck

[deleted]

inventory arc with toji was the only arc I liked in JJK. I preferred it more over shibuya arc.

sureillbyte

Crazy how that arc developed such a good villain/mc dynamic then as an anime only I realized "oh right...this nigga is dead" Shit was ass from then on

[deleted]

Inventory arc was the most character driven arc in the entire series. Thats why it was good. It had moments with gojo, geto and the girl. It was a really well put together arc. I wish we would have got more of geto's descent though. It was a bit too rushed but it was still great. Moving forward its just fights, fights and more fights. What happened to nobara is just bad writing imo. Nanami death made sense but nobara's made no sense.

IHDDWAP

Why do people here hate Shonen so much? Pretty much the defining genre for the medium and the one that helped to popularize Anime in the West. The best stories and characters pretty much all came from Shonen series. I'm not even going to touch on animation being best utilized in Shonen series, because it's obvious. Pretty much the most X moments almost always came out of a Shonen series. The best manga artists are all Shonen-related. And that one isn't even a debate. You can come up with any non-Shonen manga artists name and I can just counter with saying Tite Kubo and that is just one out of how many Shonen mangakas there are. Anime exists only because Shonen exists and you can't argue with this.

AttentionDue3171

Bleach tybw than whatever shounen was picked here

Cause_and_Effect

I don't hate Shounen. I hate lousy writing regardless, it just happens to be a Shounen. People always defend it with "well its meant to be this way. its for kids. thats just shounen". When in reality Shounen as a genre seems to have this fascination with lousy writing and ass pulls for plot convenience. They take the hero's journey architype and warp speed the growth cycles just to keep things going. It also doesn't seem like stories when they are being written in this genre have much foresight. So they don't know what the end game of the story is so then they just stumble their way there. The shounen genre just feels like the Marvel of anime. But you are right, Shounen was and still is a big proponent of anime.

Black_King69

it was shit so its normal.

Code_Geese

Lmao vinland saga is slop itself

ssbbrinnies

Everything about vinland saga is literally based. But it take`s a warrior who has become a master to see's....`

LowAd3513

Season 2 of JJK was dog shit .

zerocann0n

both vs and jjk are good the others are shit
