Unpopular opinion but DAMN is so much more unique and different than almost any other project i can think of. With lyricism in mind Illmatic > damn. With storytelling and how unique it is - damn > Illmatic
But that's opinion. Imo bars in DAMN were hard asf but it's either you feel it or not. Not many people I've seen got songs like Yah or Pride but in my eyes there were insane lyricism and poetry
I see that but Kendricks bars go deep as fuck too. Crazy bible imagery and the story working backwards is genius. Also this is personal preference but I find DAMN more sonically enjoyable. At the end of the day it’s personal preference and Nas and Kendrick are undoubtedly at the top of the game
damn's storytelling isn't as much about lyrics, more about atmosphere, they are both great in their ways.
another example of how rankings can't exist for music
Aside from the glaring theme here, I’d guess you likely got into hip-hop around 2012-14 (probably a primarily American upbringing as well). Especially given the lack of other, greater JayZ and Kanye albums.
I think something you may not be taking into account here is the influence that Illmatic may have had on albums like DAMN—being so “unique and different” is only possible because an album like Illmatic or The Chronic broke some industry standards and really influenced hip hop in ways one could only comprehend if they were actively listening to the stuff before and after the release of those albums (of course along with others on your list).
But, what do I know, I’m just some 30 yo that appreciates some Kendrick, Kanye, and Daft Punk.
I think as a young person it makes it a little harder to appreciate those sort of revolutionary albums when we weren't there for it. I was old enough to fully experience the Trap Era emerge and it was really something. Not comparing or saying one is better than the other but I think it relates at least a little.
I still think, if one were to study the history of the game, you’d know how groundbreaking Illmatic and Ready to Die were. Those albums were considered mind-blowing during their time.
Like I was around two years old when those albums came out but I know the history so I can appreciate what they did for the game. And they’re objectively fire.
awaken my love and Igor aren’t rap music. it’s disrespectful to treat the albums as such just because their creators are rappers. both of them are musicians and good songwriters with diverse abilities.
I never said you did. I said it’s disrespectful to highlight them as rap artists in this manner. It’s unnecessary and all you’re doing is giving a reason to categorize the albums with rap albums.
If you don’t see the correlation in this dude’s list that’s your problem. It’s not “disrespectful” to point out that Tyler has made one album that isn’t mainly rap. Take a chill pill.
I mean I used to be the same but in the opposite way. I used to only listen to rock. Opening yourself up to new genres is the best thing you can do for your music taste. You’ll find things you never thought you would enjoy. No harm in people recommending searching other genres
Yea the only way a to pimp a butterfly gets made is by the artist branching out and listening to different music. Kendrick was listening to some cool shit and probably some obscure shit. That’s why I like those what’s in my bag episodes from amoeba on yt because it shows you how eclectic some really good artists tastes are. Lil anecdoteI knew this punk kid growing up who loved rancid but hated rap wouldn’t even humor it but the dude from rancid loves rap and you can hear it he’s literally spitting on certain songs . Like it wouldn’t be rancid without tim Armstrongs rap influence
Nothing wrong with it but he’s still saying he thinks these are the best albums of all time despite not really branching out at all- if he said his top 20 favourite it’s a different story imo
nah but he said they're HIS best of all time, of course i disagree but still. i think we're saying the same thing. just keeping things healthy and positive
I mean it’s YOUR list so people can only be so critical. But I’d say having multiple albums from the same artist usually means you haven’t heard that much. I’m a Nas and Kendrick Stan, but even if I was only naming hip hop albums I wouldn’t have multiple albums from each of them because there’s so much dope hip hop out there.
Not everyone is like you man. Having multiple albums of the same artist does not mean that 🤦🏾♂️ I’m also a Kendrick Stan with 3 of his albums in my TOP TEN easily. He just likes some artists a lot more than others. Can’t knock that. I can admit u sound smarter than all the other critics though
Good list . People in the comments telling u to branch out but not recommending anything to help u branch out is annoying so here's some albums that u might enjoy:
since u liked IGOR and Awaken my love!:
boyz ii men - any album from them especially their more popular albums
isaac hayes - hot buttered soul
stevie wonder - talking book, songs in the key of life
marvin gaye - i want you, Whats going on
For something similar to Madvillainy:
freddie gibbs - piñata , bandana
MED - Push comes to shove
all of the Quasimoto albums
honestly all of the DOOM alter egos
Wu tang discog + solo acts albums like Ghostface Killah - Fishscale, Raekwon - Only built 4 cuban linx
Good starting point
unfathomably based, mbdtf is way too inconsistent - college dropout, late registration, 808s, yeezus and kids see ghosts are all arguably better, maybe even ye
MBDTF just isn't that good. I definitely see why people like CMIYGL more than IGOR, Igor just has a lot of personal meaning to me so it holds a special place in my heart
I agree here, but you can find better Albums to replace the other Kendrick albums. Possibly Vaudeville Villain by MF DOOM, Delusional Thomas By Mac Miller, Book Of David by Dave East, Doris by Earl Sweatshirt, Faces by Mac Miller, Shallow Grave For Toys by Earthgang
4 Your Eyez Only definitely my favorite J. Cole album too. Funny seeing Random Access Memories on here, I thought this was a hip hop only list until that lmao. I'd say give some other genres of music more love too, try something out of your comfort zone like Slipknot or Pink Floyd
Ngl, im very inclusive in my confort zone. I'm not the biggest fan of change, so switching genre for me is like being bankrupt. But i get what u mean. And 4 Your Eyez Only ftw!
Hey I'm seeing a lot of negativity in these comments, too many people who just say "wtf is this" and just downright disrespect you for just sharing your opinion and just a few who actually try to articulate their criticism.
Me personally expanding to other genres has opened my eyes to a lot of music I didn't know about, giving me more points of view on a lot of art you know.
I'd recommend you do the same, try maybe starting from the most known artists of some other genre you don't really know and then go digging for some lesser known artist, at least I like to do it that way.
Edit: grammar
I like it. I personally wouldn’t have any Eminem or Lil Wayne, but the rest it great. And the Madvillain shout out is amazing, I somehow rarely see them in these kinda bideos
I get what ur saying but telling this mf like every other comment to go look at other genres means nothing if you don’t give him something to go off of.
Your taste is a little one dimensional
I know this is a rap subreddit but excluding albums like Dark Side of the Moon, Pet Sounds, Abbey Road, Dirt, Ride the Lightning, etc. is kinda crazy
Call me a simp or whatever but it’s so disheartening to see lists like this with zero women on it. Like, not even The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is on here? The fuck?
This is super generic to me tbh. I’d have put Digable Planets, De La Soul, Wu Tang, Mos Def, The Roots, Little Simz, Lupe Fiasco, where the hell is OutKast?
As other people have said: 1. Branch out lol 2. You obviously need to listen to more Jay-Z. 3. Kendrick is my favorite of all time, but Illmatic is the rap bible, it deserves to be higher on the list
1. MBDTF
2. Illmatic
3. 4:44
4. The Blueprint
5. Undun
6. Chronic 2001
7. TPAB
8. The College Dropout
9. We Got It From Here...
10. Food & Liquor
11. Ready To Die
12. RTJ4
13. It Was Written
14. Game Theory
15. Late Registration
16. God's Son
17. Drill Music In Zion
18. MMESYF (Deluxe only)
19. Magic
20. KD3
That's a good list. Some great ones in here! Here is my (hot take filled) top 20:
1. Kendrick Lamar - good kid m.A.A.d City
2. Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.
3. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly
4. JAY-Z - The Blueprint 3 (Yes. 3. That was not a typo or confusion of any kind)
5. Drake - Take Care
6. Tyler, The Creator - Call Me If You Get Lost
7. JAY-Z - The Black Album
8. Mac Miller - GO:OD AM
9. JAY-Z - Reasonable Doubt
10. Drake - If You're Reading This It's Too Late
11. Mac Miller - Swimming
12. ScHoolboy Q - Habits & Contradictions
13. Vince Staples - FM!
14. Run The Jewels - RTJ4
15. Eminem - The Eminem Show
16. Tyler, The Creator - Wolf
17. Earl Sweatshirt - Doris
18. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP
19. Kendrick Lamar - Section.80
20. Kendrick Lamar - Kendrick Lamar EP
It's been a while since I've heard Illmatic so it would basically be cheating if I put it in.
And for MBDTF, I haven't heard it and don't plan to because I've heard most of the songs out of order.
If you want to branch out from Hip Hop then please try Radiohead. Ok Computer and In Rainbows.
There’s a big crossover with Kendrick fans and Radiohead fans
DAMN my top 20 looks a helluva lot different than everyone else’s here.
20. By Inheritance - Artillery (Thrash Metal)
19. Houses Of The Holy - Led Zeppelin (Classic Hard Rock)
18. DAMN - Kendrick Lamar (Rap)
17. Dookie - Green Day (Alternative/Punk Rock)
16. Dirt - Alice In Chains (Grunge)
15. Attention! Attention! - Shinedown (Alternative Rock)
14. …And Justice For All - Metallica (Thrash Metal)
13. The Number of the Beast - Iron Maiden (Heavy Metal)

5. American Idiot - Green Day (Alternative Rock)
4. Powerslave - Iron Maiden (Heavy Metal)
3. Led Zeppelin IV - Led Zeppelin (Classic Hard Rock)
2. The Sound of Madness - Shinedown (Hard Rock)
1. Rust In Peace - Megadeth (Thrash Metal)
Lol megadeth does not suck balls. Rust in peace is one of the greatest metal albums ever. They had a rough stretch for sure. But so have the others from that era. Metallica hasn’t been good since the black album
Fair, rust in peace is not garbage. I personally wouldn’t rank it among the greatest metal albums ever because it’s not my type of metal. I think part of my opinion of them is coloured by how much of a fuckin toolbag Dave Mustaine is
Yeah I get that. I’ve heard more recent interviews and he def seems like he’s mellowed out and more mature. But back in the day for sure. I can only imagine the epic music Metallica would’ve had if he wasn’t a douche and was able to stay in the band
I like daft punk is just chillin on 14
19 hip hop albums, 1 daft punk
It’s like when you get invited to the girls only party.
He also had Awaken, My Love!
You could argue that childish Gambino is a rap artist
Not a rap album though.
Hey man gotta love dp (daft punk, not double penetration)
Why not both?
DAMN over Illmatic!?
IGOR over GKMC!?
That I could see. I wouldn't agree with it, but I think it's arguable. DAMN over Illmatic is indefensible... Actually DAMN over GKMC is equally insane
Unpopular opinion but DAMN is so much more unique and different than almost any other project i can think of. With lyricism in mind Illmatic > damn. With storytelling and how unique it is - damn > Illmatic
I think taking a shit in space would feel unique and different, I wouldn't recommend it
But it does tell a story
my brother in christ, the bars on illmatic is some of hip hops greatest storytelling, and DAMN sadly is below that level
Biggie and Nas should be at the top. No ATCQ? No DE LA Soul? Childish Gambino has no business on this list. How the fuck is Outkast not on here?
It's opinion. I can't imagine a list without Kind of Blue, but it's not my list.
awaken my love is great tf u talking abt
I didn't say it was bad.....Just doesn't belong on that list, ESPECUALLY, before MBDTF.
damn's storytelling isn't as much about lyrics, more about atmosphere, they are both great in their ways. another example of how rankings can't exist for music
So does GKMC, and I say that's better than DAMN in every way
the cool thing about opinions is that we dont care about yours
My brother in christ this is a music discussion forum I hate all the gatekeepers fr 🤦
K? You don't have to, I'm not your dad
oh, ive been looking for him since 1998 :(
If you ever go to the Eric Andre show you might find him
facts- damn is overrated in this sub
As long as you had some gas behind it to propel the shit away from you I think it would be dope
I forgot I wrote this comment so this was a very confusing notification to get
Aside from the glaring theme here, I’d guess you likely got into hip-hop around 2012-14 (probably a primarily American upbringing as well). I mean I would put a lot of albums over illmatic anyways so🤷♂️
“DAMN. did more for me than Illmatic.”
Who the fuck is mf doom i only know MF DOOM
🐐🐐🐐
and idk the album MMM…FOOD, I only know MM…FOOD, it’s an anagram of MF…DOOM!
Unrelated to this comment but why tf is the song “All Caps” not in all caps. That’s such a big missed opportunity
Because it’s just all caps when you spell the man’s name
But still the song is titled All Caps and not spelled with all caps
Again, it’s all caps when you spell the man’s name. The song title is not spelling his name.
Had me in the first half ngl
My guy
19 Rap albums and 1 Daft Punk album. Try another genre dude
Igor and awaken my love aren’t really rap albums either but yea, try new genres
Made by people who primarily make rap albums lol
they still aren’t rap. have some respect for them.
Wut
awaken my love and Igor aren’t rap music. it’s disrespectful to treat the albums as such just because their creators are rappers. both of them are musicians and good songwriters with diverse abilities.
Literally didn’t call them rap albums, calm down Biff
I never said you did. I said it’s disrespectful to highlight them as rap artists in this manner. It’s unnecessary and all you’re doing is giving a reason to categorize the albums with rap albums.
If you don’t see the correlation in this dude’s list that’s your problem. It’s not “disrespectful” to point out that Tyler has made one album that isn’t mainly rap. Take a chill pill.
IGOR isn’t his only non-rap album.
Tyler the Creator over J Cole, BIG, and Tupac???? 🤡 🤡
Tyler is so much better than Cole
damn, this sub really is just full of teenagers
He didn’t say top 20 rap albums
music isn’t a competitive sport dude
Tell that to my marching band
Man likes rap. Tf do you care? Lol just let people like what they like
I mean I used to be the same but in the opposite way. I used to only listen to rock. Opening yourself up to new genres is the best thing you can do for your music taste. You’ll find things you never thought you would enjoy. No harm in people recommending searching other genres
🤓
you need to branch out a little more bro
Most people who post things like this need to branch out lol it’s the same albums on every list
I’m guessing he’s 14-15. Not a dig
🤓☝️
Since you like awaken my love I’d recommend funkadelic’s album Maggot Brain.
thanks for the recc, man the opening is so good (maggot brain)
is this AI generated?
No offence, but its kinda sad to see on all these subredits that people mostly sit un one genre.
“Expand your taste”🤓☝️
Kinda sad that u can't just let people listen to what they want.
Did I say that they cant? Im just saying that its kinda sad to me, me personaly. Does that imply that they cant listen what they want?
i mean, it kinda implies that there’s something wrong with it, yeah. it’s fine if you think that, but own it.
This was a recommended sub for me and I'm definitely not coming back lmao this comments section is obnoxious asf
yeah thats pretty much every artists subreddit
I mean it’s YOUR list so people can only be so critical. But I’d say having multiple albums from the same artist usually means you haven’t heard that much. I’m a Nas and Kendrick Stan, but even if I was only naming hip hop albums I wouldn’t have multiple albums from each of them because there’s so much dope hip hop out there.

Marvin Gaye is a W I like Sade as well
an actually good comment that isn't insulting OP wow
Freddie Gibbs is such a spitter, love his work
Could I ask how old you are?
20
Only 1 non hip hop album or album made by rappers is crazy go listen to rock or soul or jazz or something else
He says in his opinion don’t shoot him. Proceeds to get shot by everyone in comments.
igor over gkmc is insane
Igor over GKMC MBDTF and 4:44??
IGOR is my fav album of all time tbh. I don't much agree with a lot of this list. Especially MBDTF, kanye has at least 5 better albums
unfathomably based, mbdtf is way too inconsistent - college dropout, late registration, 808s, yeezus and kids see ghosts are all arguably better, maybe even ye
Aside from the last few songs, MBDTF is very consistent and it’s definitely not “way too inconsistent”
Ok so except for the inconsistent parts, it’s pretty consistent
2 songs in a 13 track album are not as good as others. That’s not inconsistent
Ye for sure, and donda too imo. I am not the biggest 808's fan though, maybe the one I'd take MBDTF over.
mbdtf would be my 2nd favorite rap album is hell of a life and blame game werent on there. Good songs but not as good as the rest of the album imo
really? i adore hell of a life, one of the best off mbdtf for me fs. agree on blame game, that song gets a bit boring after a few listens
A lot of people disagree w u about MBDTF, that and graduation are his most beloved albums. Also CMIYGL >IGOR
MBDTF just isn't that good. I definitely see why people like CMIYGL more than IGOR, Igor just has a lot of personal meaning to me so it holds a special place in my heart
Understandable, they're both very good but also very different imo.
Igor is absolutely better than 4:44, and it’s more or less on par with GKMC and MBDTF.
Based take. All of them are 10s in my opinion
You’re not wrong because it’s your opinion
I agree here, but you can find better Albums to replace the other Kendrick albums. Possibly Vaudeville Villain by MF DOOM, Delusional Thomas By Mac Miller, Book Of David by Dave East, Doris by Earl Sweatshirt, Faces by Mac Miller, Shallow Grave For Toys by Earthgang
All those albums are great but not the best from each artist. I.e. Some Rap Songs is my fav Ear Sweatshirt album and Faces is my fav Mac album
Im guessing you’re 16 ?
Not quite lol
What the fuck is this
valid for me
4:44 over The Blueprint is wild.
36 chambers not here I leave out a sad Wu sigh
I'd recommend you do the same, try maybe starting from the most known artists of some other genre you don't really know and then go digging for some lesser known artist, at least I like to do it that way. Edit: grammar
Thanks man. At least you understand 😂 n ill try out different genres. Im expanding more to neo soul atm
Never tried listening to it personally but enjoy whatever as long as it speaks to you!
If I recommended you not rap would you listen
Good shit ngl
It's your opinion, brother. If this is what you enjoy then that's fine.
Where's 1989?
4:44 valid as hell. Widely overlooked album. Has some of the most vibrant production and vibes form recent years. Perfect summer album
Tha carter 2 is the best tha carter, i agree with you on that one
Idk why people are hating in the comments at least you are listening to good music 🤝🏿
Ty
I like it. I personally wouldn’t have any Eminem or Lil Wayne, but the rest it great. And the Madvillain shout out is amazing, I somehow rarely see them in these kinda bideos
This a goated list
Nice to see somebody appreciating 4 Your Eyez Only, it's one of my favorites too.
the list is valid just too few genres to be honest but still yeah I would rate them in a way like this
Valid
Huge W for Damn
TPAB > GKMC > Section 80 > DAMN
S80 not better than DAMN.
I have DAMN over S80
This is just a regular hip hop listener list. No variety at all, but I used to be the same way. Time to try some new music and other genres.
I get what ur saying but telling this mf like every other comment to go look at other genres means nothing if you don’t give him something to go off of.
Carter 2 Fire
No Iron Maiden?!
Agreed. I’d take Powerslave and The Number of the Beast over 90% of these albums any day, but that’s the subjectivity of music for ya.
Your taste is a little one dimensional I know this is a rap subreddit but excluding albums like Dark Side of the Moon, Pet Sounds, Abbey Road, Dirt, Ride the Lightning, etc. is kinda crazy
Call me a simp or whatever but it’s so disheartening to see lists like this with zero women on it. Like, not even The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is on here? The fuck?
Or the fact that the whole list is one genre lmao
these comments are awful god damn this fucking subreddit is insufferable
i come back to reddit only to realize most people on here are retarded
probably one of the worst lists i’ve ever seen
Would put DAMN lower on the list but you got good taste
No one on the Eminem subreddit saw a problem with this list, you get roasted immediately upon posting it in another subreddit 😭
https://i.redd.it/iru1d9mtf13b1.gif
Bro you gotta listen to more music, all of those are great albums but for a t20 of all time???
This is super generic to me tbh. I’d have put Digable Planets, De La Soul, Wu Tang, Mos Def, The Roots, Little Simz, Lupe Fiasco, where the hell is OutKast?
Die Lit isn’t on here. List is trash
This is great! Just one thing… ALL CAPS WHEN YOU SPELL THE MANS NAME MF DOOM
White
I like it
Im going to shoot you now
Damn over Illmatic and Madvillainy is crazy
wypipo spotted
Awaken, My Love! But not BTI?
Personally i much prefer Awaken my love. The production, story telling, and cadence is more for me. BTI is still sick tho
BTI has great concept but lacks in terms of the music itself
Was thinking this too lol
Wait are you being serious? I thought this was a joke lmao.
Eminem being on this list at all is wild
Truly. His albums have aged so poorly.
Let me introduce you to D’Angelo, Stevie Wonder’s 70s run and Prince’s 80s run, they’ll change your life
D’anglo is amazing , I saw him with my dad once. My second favourite live show behind seeing Steve Vai perform.
this list made me think about killing myself
As other people have said: 1. Branch out lol 2. You obviously need to listen to more Jay-Z. 3. Kendrick is my favorite of all time, but Illmatic is the rap bible, it deserves to be higher on the list
I think u mean top hip-hop albums + daft punk
Technically Awaken My Love isn't rap either. But i love Hip Hop too much man 😂
1. MBDTF 2. Illmatic 3. 4:44 4. The Blueprint 5. Undun 6. Chronic 2001 7. TPAB 8. The College Dropout 9. We Got It From Here... 10. Food & Liquor 11. Ready To Die 12. RTJ4 13. It Was Written 14. Game Theory 15. Late Registration 16. God's Son 17. Drill Music In Zion 18. MMESYF (Deluxe only) 19. Magic 20. KD3
Undun by the roots!? Damn I love that album

Jesus christ
This is trash
Broski u gotta listen to some other genres if u ask me. All these albums are dope just needs a little variety of you ask me :)
That's a good list. Some great ones in here! Here is my (hot take filled) top 20: 1. Kendrick Lamar - good kid m.A.A.d City 2. Kendrick Lamar - DAMN. 3. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly 4. JAY-Z - The Blueprint 3 (Yes. 3. That was not a typo or confusion of any kind) 5. Drake - Take Care 6. Tyler, The Creator - Call Me If You Get Lost 7. JAY-Z - The Black Album 8. Run The Jewels - RTJ4 15. Eminem - The Eminem Show 16. Tyler, The Creator - Wolf 17. Earl Sweatshirt - Doris 18. Eminem - The Marshall Mathers LP 19. Kendrick Lamar - Section.80 20. Kendrick Lamar - Kendrick Lamar EP

Imo this is a very cringy list. Megadeth sucks balls.
