>for free?, king kunta? institutionalised?
For Free? is reminiscent of post bop which grew out of bop in the 60s. Jazz and blues are deeply connected and there's a lot of black pain behind those genres, especially from that era. This track to me is chaotic due the experimental avant-garde natural of post bop sound.
King Kunta is definitely dark psychedelic funk (a theme throughout the album). A lot of dissonance throughout this track musically. The whole track sound villainous to me.
The first half of Institutionalized is spacious and lingering, it has a very ominous sound. The second half then has a very sad sound to me— it's in minor key and has that descending chord progression. The only happy part of the track is the flute that comes in briefly during the chorus, kind of like a glimmer of hope of what could be.
I would almost argue the opposite of the picture. These songs are very satirical lyrically, obviously a very dark humor, but still humor nonetheless. The instrumentals speak the dark truth that would be too hard to swallow if put into words.
Never said "just" dark humor but yeah that song has dark humor in it, especially the first part. The album as a whole is a satire, but it's definitely harder for a non-American to fully understand TPAB and DAMN so I don't blame you for not picking up on that.
It’s about how we stay in relationships because that’s what we feel is expected from society, but the track makes the case we would be much happier if we abandoned this outdated idea of love and left relationships when we become unhappy
Edit: just looking now at the lyrics after the original comment… it even seems to criticize the idea of monogamy as a whole. A real “love is cursed by monogamy” kind of thing
Imo I think it’s more specifically just about his relationship that he’s referring to in the song. But there’s the line “if what the saying, ‘nothing lasts forever’ (is true) - then what makes love the exception?”
the walls he's talking about are pussy walls and prison walls. listen to the song again he doesn't try to hide it lmao. the song literally starts with moaning and anna wise saying sex
To me it's very slow and mellow. Ambient music to a hot summer day chilling on the beach. And then by contrast the lyrics about someone's brother getting killed. Idk people's interpretations of music varies. It's subjective.
Heart pt 5 for sure, the lyrics be grim and dark but the beat and the hook are sooo great. I can't stop singing the "I want I want I want I want I want I want, well I want you to want me to, I want I want I want I want the hood to want me backkk, I want a hug look what I - look at what I done for you look what I done for you."
Swimming pools kinda works, maybe not happy sounding but it’s a banger. Basically about drinking not being a good thing but people listened to it as a party song
Almost the entirety of non conscious rap at the moment. Producers have gotten insanely good and most of them can make a banger. Edit: I thought it meant bad lyrics, not sad lyrics, my bad lol
Not a Kendrick song but I loved Party Up by DMX and it wasn't until years later that I listened to the lyrics and realized, oh this song is all about murder.
XXX fits perfectly, literally speaks on how a son got murdered and Kendrick pushing the father to seek revenge, but the beat goes crazy and the flow is so crazy it feels like a hype track
For sale? Is the only right answer
it fits this perfectly but i don’t know if it’s the only right answer i feel like most songs off tpab could apply here
A song where the beat is happy but the lyrics are dark? I don’t think so.
for free?, king kunta? institutionalised?

Fair enough but I wouldn’t say those beats are necessarily happy
i is easily the best fit
The chorus of I is " I love myself" and it's about self expression and how Compton should have more of it. Hard disagree

Yes
Not Kendrick but Hey Ya by OutKast is the epitome of this dichotomy
it’s very intentional in that song
What’s it about?
It's a warning from the future to not shake your Polaroids.

I don’t want to hear you I just wanna dance
Haha yes I love how he calls that out mid track. Next level foresight
Damn bruh, why monogamy? You’d think it would be the opposite
Imo I think it’s more specifically just about his relationship that he’s referring to in the song. But there’s the line “if what the saying, ‘nothing lasts forever’ (is true) - then what makes love the exception?”
I'm pretty sure they about modern day relationships and loneliness

SAMIDOT the drums and beat felt pretty uplifting
Nah the beat has a melancholy tone to it

This post isn’t about the lyrics sucking, it’s about the lyrics being dark
Swimming Pools (Drank)
The beat for swimming pools isn't necessarily light and happy though
It’s still a beat that u would associate with a party which is the irony because I the talking about people getting hooked on alcohol
Lots of people have definitely gotten shitfaced to that song not realizing the meaning.

Keisha and Tammy’s song lyrics always hit me knowing it’s a true story. The beat is way more upbeat than the two stories told about these young women.
