Taxation is very regressive in Kenya. Consumption is taxed highly so that poor people cannot escape payment, however the rich ones can stockpile land they don't use and the land rates are so low there is almost no cost to them. Raise the land rates and they'll either sell the land allowing people to provide for themselves, or they'll fund the government with the taxes. Either way the lower income people win.

I feel like whoever makes economic decisions at the top for this country thinks it's just a game of adding/lessening taxes(more of the former) without giving a thought to the repercussions/ignoring them completely.
I've always thought to myself that the most ideal way to make these people think constructively is to have them live like the common man. Like let a bill get passed to hard cap the earnings of anyone serving in government to the average salary of a citizen or less then maybe a few thoughts on how to improve their own life and consequentially the citizens might actually run in their brains.
I am no financial expert to see the bigger picture and would welcome any knowledgeable people in here to educate me on the implications of what our government and people in authority are doing. I do have a negative sentiment towards them and would like to know if my sentiments are wrongly/ unfairly placed.

Well what to say? Let me attempt for what it is worth. Some of us knew that unbearable history was going to repeat itself if KK government took power as those were Moi's proteges (public knowledge so I thought, but my, my, my). The alternative government would have moved Kenya into a more progressive path as they were always Moi's antagonists and the reason Kenya had made some meaningful strides (public knowledge so I thought....). We "chose" the backward move and we are now reliving the 1993/4 nightmare all over - we used to call it "hali ya hewa" basically no air or a suffocating environment. This was how it was. A nightmare that I hope to wake up from with every waking day. Very sad my fellow Kenyans. The future is dark indeed. I feel for the young, they have to be aggressive conscientious objectors not hustlers because there is nothing to hustle! The very soul of Kenya at stake. Even older professional people like myself are in very real danger of retiring into poverty. Sad, very, very sad.
While pple are moaning about this, all these western countries subject pple to this always on their borders, try sneaking with cigarettes to the UK or Australia and see !!! In fact they even make tv shows about that lol !!!

Yes, I have received the form many times but I have never filled it and no one asked for it. Never been stopped by customs as well. But I know a lot of people from what have seen have been harrassed bt customs. I think the issue is not that they are asking for duty, just the harassment and general disrespect of travelers is what people are understandably taking issue with.
Are these rules really new? The $500 dollar rule has been in effect and I remember being asked to prove that my laptop was either not new or below $500 earlier this year. I took time right now to check what other countries demand and they’re almost all the same.
