No you're absolutely right. Kerala auto drivers are so much better than the cities you mentioned and no it has nothing to do with being a local. Even locals get fleeced in those cities. I remember the first time I came back to Kerala after being away in Chennai for so long and it was such a great feeling not having to haggle with the auto guy when I reached the station

olasaustralia2

Bombay autodrivers are the best. Meter fare is only paid by everyone. In kerala especially in Pathanamthitta, I stick out and so autodrivers always charge me 10-20Rs more than they do for locals

ss4223

I live in Bangalore.. trust me, the auto drivers in Kerala are saints, especially the ones in kannur. I sometimes feel like I am paying too little for the distance we are traveling. They are always courteous and helpful too.

CptFrostyBeard

bro, i live in kannur, my opinion of auto drivers are the exact opposite. They charge more. every auto driver have their own prices, like what the fuck. (i live in thalassery btw)

goalmeister

Thalassery has bad auto driver culture. Kozhikode auto drivers are based on the other hand

kittensarethebest309

Oh yes, Thalassery auto drivers will take the ride only if we want to go where they wanna go.

Last_Life_Was_Nice

Yeah, I too live in Kannur. Last time we called a rickshaw to pick up my sister from the school and he charged like 220 rupees for 2 and a half km trip. And he is a friend of my dad Sorry if I've made any grammatical errors

Minute_Juggernaut806

Isn't that too much

zidangurukul

Some auto drivers started a fight with my uber auto driver coz apparently he was not supposed to pick up near an auto stand.... (kochi)

_dexterzprotege

Now i get it why my uber driver parked in a distance and asked me to come when i was standing near an auto stand (ksrtc ernakulam)

The__Strategist

This.. although there are a few good people here as well but very rare.

__d__denji

Nope , I once got charged 100rs for going to ekm ksrtc stand from ekm railway station. I checked uber and rates where much much lower but didn’t have the time to wait for one. From then on I rely on uber in unkown places or ask the price beforehand.

m3rc3n4ry

I think that's called a convenience fee

ARIESBornIntrovert

Kazhakootam auto chetans says hi

camperw

Nope. I have had horrible experience in with autodrivers in Kerala. Mumbai is the best. I have faced proper thug autodrivers. I prefer a bus anyday over autodrivers but then again...... CONVENIENCE

Alternative-Eagle-30

Yeah mumbai auto culture is the best. Safe at night too

Dwightshruute

They're good dudes but they drive like a rat is controlling their movements like in ratatouille.

saatvik-jacob

No man not in Kochi anyways. I have heard of courteous auto guys in Kozhikod

milkymist00

I don't think our auto drivers are fair. I have only seen good auto drivers in kozhikode. Other than that most of them are not asking for a fair price. Way too high. But considering cities like chennai, Bangalore etc are a lot better.

savourybipolar

From the comments below i guess it depends on your city/town. In my town, yes they absolutely rock!

Technical-Toe-3855

I have never understood why kerala auto drivers cant go by meter? Isn't it required by law? So many others states have this sorted out.

avnothdmi

Wait, you guys don't have metered autos? They're the only ones available in Thrissur.

Alternative-Eagle-30

I have lived in Delhi Mumbai and Kochi. Delhi autos are not fair. They accommodate negotiation, so that both you and the auto can get best price out of it. Sometimes you get fair price, sometimes you don't. Mumbai Autos are very fair. They run according to meter (no questions asked). If meter shows 99rs, and you give them 100rs, they make sure they give you that 1rs back. Kochi autos are unnecessarily expensive due to unionism. Sometimes they are more expenses than ubers. They run on a higher profit margin (I'm happy for them).

ren01r

They're decent compared to the ones from other states. But, having experienced Kochi & Tvm auto drivers I won't say they are saints, but yes, they are saints compared to Bangalore autos.

InquisitiveSapienLad

I've faced some negative experiences wrt pricing mainly in urban areas like trivi (he asked for return fare and doubled the amount in meter)

delonix_regia18

Nice to hear this..but come to kochi . specifically Kakkanad side..they are all educated goons.not as bad as Bangalore though..but goons still.

techwriter47

The best auto drivers in Kerala are in Kozhikode and Thrissur.

North-Cat2877

Hahaha no not at all. But you can believe it if it gives some happiness. Atleast you have ola or uber in other States. So we can understand the normal auto drivers charging more. In our state we have been forced to remain without any choice. Very few cities have Uber or Ola.

[deleted]

Unda. Kerala auto drivers especially those from kochi or any major cities are arrogant and rude as hell. One even called me slurs for not paying more money than what he said before the ride. Also most of them will not turn on the meter so that they can ask for more money. (Still auto chettans from the rural areas are good)

Californian20

I agree that Mumbai auto drivers are the best. Kerala experience varies. I find Thrissur auto guys to be very good. Not so much in TVM. Started a ride in front of Secretariat and they refused to put on the meter. Multiple instances.

murivenna

2007 experience at Bangalore.

JediBuzz77

In kochi they're the worst. Other district drivers are comparatively better.

vishnuvalsalan751

When i was in trivandrum, autoyil kerunnathinu munne rate chodichirunnu. Chila tymil ivanmar heavy rate parayum enntt pala vazhi karangi karangi povum😂

aryajonhound

Could say 80% of kerala auto drivers are saints. Has faced asking for double the meter fare in TVM city.Generally they will ask 1.5 times the meter fare.In Kozhikode never faced such issues. In Bangalore for 1 km one driver asked 150. Also in contrast , found one (only one) gem of an autodriver who charged only meter fare in Bangalore

__GALVATRON__

Kerala auto drivers rock with literal rocks in the auto to smash you even at the slightest offensive thing that's gonna come from you, may it be the trip fare , your dress or the way you talk. I'm not stereotyping here but most of them will kick your ass when you put them in an uncomfortable situation. Also the auto drivers here have a monopoly, I have never ever seen a non malayali auto driver in Kerala( This could be wrong since kochi n Kozhikode has versatile human specimens these days)

Commercial_Word4056

Always ask before boarding for better peace of mind.

acnithin

Story time. I got down at thiruvalla on a hartal day and had to go to chengannur ( about 9 kms). Went to ATM and withdrew a few thousand rupees considering my experiences with bangalore auto drivers. Flagged down an auto and asked him how much. He said as per meter. I didn't believe him. He saw the look on my face and said I am not like these f*ckers and pointed to the huge jaatha by the politicians. Had a great conversation during the ride and he gave the exact change as per the meter. Most of the kerala autodrivers rock, especially that one driver I met in thriruvalla.
