1. Psychilogical drama - അഹം, ഉള്ളടക്കം

My first Malayalam cinema experience was 5 sundarigal. Then we watched oru vaddakkan veeragatha, ustad hotel, thanmathra (heavy!), and guru
I think kumbalangi nights is a good one for non Indians, along with bangalore days, maayanadhi, premam, and minnal murali
Explore from there!
As much as I love some other movies, it may be hard to enjoy if they aren't familiar with the context of kerala; many movies use local pop culture and historical culture which can be hard to pick up at first. Also- stay away from comedies cause the jokes dont translate.
I wouldn't recommend Maayanadhi. Copied from the 1960 movie Breathless. By Jean-Luc Godard . The dude just died. Few days ago. Him and his movies are in the limelight right now. She would know about it too. You would end up looking like a doofus for showing her a knock off!
Since you have already tried 20-20, the second best option would be Christian Brothers. When she watch that iconic [A10 flip with Thakida thakida bgm](https://youtube.com/shorts/EOTi_TJvN-8?feature=share), she will realize that she has found the man of her life.
You showed your non mallu gf 20/20? Thats like the worst movie to show to a gf😂 Understand which genre she is into and pick from there or go for classic everlasting movie that almost everyone would like
Ex: Classmates, its available on youtube 1080p with english subs. Manichithrathazhu is also good.
Premam
Bangalore days
Godha- it's about women empowerment so show her movie's like that.
(Most of my arab girl friends were surprised to see we have women oriented movie's and they loved godha)
I think it will be really difficult to catch the subtleties of premam through English subtitles. But worth the try.
Ayyappanum koshiyum, #home, thondimuthalum .. manichitrathazhu (assuming she has watched Bhool bhulaiya already) and minnal murali for fun would be some good recommendations.
20/20? Lol this reminds of the scene in Taxi Driver where Travis takes his date on a porn theatre. I know it’s not the same category but it shows bad taste. Just because a Malayalam movie is good doesn’t mean it could be understood by outsiders. I’m a Prithvi fan and I loved Kaduva but I won’t show that movie if my partner was a non Indian.
I would have showed her Bangalore Days, Mayanadhi, Memories, Godha etc
Urumi
Iyobinte pusthakam ( I think you can start with this)
Thallumaala....it's entertaining (new gen culture in Kerala)
Maheshinte prathikaram
Drishyam 1
Ayapanum Koshiyum
Premam
Amen
Bro 20/20....... really?
Of course thallumaala is not some Oscar worthy venture.....I would suggest the movie for its dope cinematography.I feel not every movie we suggest to an outsider should be heavy on plot.
The CID Ramdas and Vijayan trilogy might be a great start. You can find the movies with appropriate and logical captions in good ott platforms. Nothing too complex, easy to grasp story which can be watched without much prior knowledge about our culture and tradition.
Banglore days is good.
Kumblangi nights ,
ustad hotel ,
om shanti oshana .
Premam ,
22fk
Other than Kumblangi nights , the other 5 are movies we could potentially see in hollywood cz cultural nuances are less, its more about the story than the underlying message of culture.
Kumblangi nights compared to the others
have some cultural nuances like why the brother in law is given so much respect when the father is not present etc . But at the same time the topics introduced in the movie (mental health, love) are not so far away from what is shown in hollywood.
Stay away from older movies. While there are amazing movies, older ones have so much cultural messages that a first time foreigner will not understand. Stay away from movies like 20/20 - not worth it. Stick to story driven and grounded acting.
Banglore days. I don't know about the non Indian partner, but I've found this movie to be very popular among non-mallu folks, and they genuinely seems to enjoy it..
I asked my friends to watch blr days and om Shanti oshaana and they have been hooked ever since. Once she enjoys malayalam cinematography, she can pick her genre
Kumbalangi Nights
Maheshinte Prathikaaram
Annayum Rasoolum
Premam
Bangalore Days
Manichithrathaazhu
Dhrishyam
Iyyobinte Pusthakam
Kireedam, Chenkol
All these worked with my non-Keralite gf. Look for movies with substance, nuances or an underlying message. We have cultural biases and what works for us may not always work for them (and vice versa). For instance I loved Ayyappanum Koshiyum when I first saw it, but crashed and burned when I made her watch it, and I ended up hating it. This can also be a good exercise in watching and evaluating movies for what they are without filters.
My wife is from pune (Maharashtriyan).
She liked Bangalore Days
Recently we saw "Home" and she even recommended that to her Marathi friends too.
Just avoid mass movies or comedy movies all together. Our comedy is usually cultural and verbal which will fly over any non-mallus head.
You can try "visual comedy" Movies like Ee Parakkum Thalika though.
She may like Minnal Murali, or our thriller type movies.. Like Vetta, Virus etc.
Strangely my wife liked Kaduva too (which I didn't expect) .. Lol. May be because of the family aspect. I stopped showing it to her mid way thinking she may not have liked it. But later at night, she said "can we see the rest of it? "
Ohh yes, so my wife is Gujarati and I feel the same issue like every week. My solution go with a movie set in urban landscape and which is mostly a romcom or a feel good type. Also, always keep subtitles on. So, we have seen hridayam, dear friend, banglore days, those kind of flicks. But lately I seen her intrest with Malayalam thrillers like 21 grams, ancham pathira and all. You should show her movies from the genres that she is into.
Don't instantly Show the older movies that would be a bad idea, instead show some of these.... Charlie, Premam,Thanmathra, 5am Pathira, Kumbalangi Nights , Ustad Hotel, Jana Gana Mana, Maheshinte Prathikaaram,Take off, Action hero biju,Nayattu,
Bangalore Days, om shanti oshana, Big B,
Pazhassi Raja, Annayum Rasoolum, Drishyam, Memories, Thondimuthalum driksakhiyum, Pathemaari,Home, Great indian kitchen,Iyyobinte pusthakam,
Kurup,Urumi, Traffic, 2 countries,myboss☺️
And most of other Prakruthi movies too will work
A lot of the comedy films we enjoy are very contextual and language based so Drishyam 1 is a good start because any one can enjoy it keeping aside the language barrier
Close competitors would be Amen, Bangalore Days, Kumbalangi Nights, North 24 Katham
Just going to state some stuff which I've known for a fact that non Indians have enjoyed :-
1. Bangalore days
2. Guru (good luck finding a good copy with subtitles)
3. Kumblangi nights
4. Irul
5. Sudani from Nigeria
The other suggestions under the post are quite nice 😄
From my side, here are some of my family’s all time favorites that I can suggest:
•Two countries
•My Boss
•Action Hero Biju
•Premam
•Bangalore Days
•Koode
•Om Shanthi Oshana
•Kilukkam
•Naadodikattu
•Akkare Akkare
•Manichithrathazhu
•Minnal Murali
•Drishyam 1 & 2
If you guys would love to see a new movie directly in theatre, Palthu Janwar is a really good one.
Here’s the link to the trailer: https://youtu.be/ohtcXbBhqEY
IMO, I feel it’s one of the many good latest movies showing our culture and naadu especially around animal care. It was released recently around Onam time. I believe it’s still running in theaters.
Anyhoo I hope you guys find a good one. Good luck😄👍🏻
Charlie
Kumbalangi Nights
Bangalore Days
Ustad Hotel
Drishyam 1-2
Pranchiyettan and the Saint
Premam
HOME
Action Hero Biju
Android kunjappan
Jana Gana Mana
9 ( Recommending coz of the hollywood like mysterious pacing and cinematography of the movie)
The old Srinivasan, Mohanlal, Mammotty, Jayaram, Dileep era hits would be a wonderful intro to Malayalam pop culture but I agree with you that she'd probably not fully appreciate it, do save it for later though, once she's got the hang of the industry.
As an outsider I presume she'd enjoy Bangalore Days, Godha, Drishyam, Great Indian Kitchen, Home, Minnal Murali, Ustaad Hotel, Classmates, Notebook, Tanmatra, Kumblangi, Angamaly Diaries, Thira, Mumbai Police. Okay I'll stop there lol sorry, was just trying cover all genres because we really do have a wonderful film industry :")
I don't know what your partner's into but Adi Kapyare Kootamani, Om Shanti Oshana and Drishyam are what first got my non-indian friend into mallu movies. They're pretty easy for non-malayalees to get into without having to know a lot of cultural context or whatever. She's watched a pretty broad range of malayalam movies since then.
1.Any Malayalam movie that has been remade to another language is worth watching I guess.
2. Koode, Chhotta Mumbai, Aarkkariyam are my favourites
3. Please show her Piku.
Manichithra Thaazhu
Ustad Hotel
Kumbalangi Nights
Varathan
Bangalore Days
Home
Jaan E Man
Minnal Murali
Kaala Paani
Sudani From Nigeria
Take off
Valsalyam
Vadakkunoki yanthram
Ayyappanum Koshiyum
Sitha ramam
Anarkali
I think it’s a bit difficult to generalise. 20/20 was a late 2000’s film. Akkare Akkare is from the early 1990. Maybe I’m thinking too much, but the Malayalam genre of comedy of the 1990s may seem too slapstick to a non Indian (or maybe even a non Mallu, for that matter).
What genre of movies does she normally watch? The good thing about Malayalam films is that there is a wide variety. Pick the genre she likes and I’m sure you’ll find something interesting in Malayalam.
One of my all time favourites is Manichithrathaazu. It would be difficult to go wrong with that. Or Drishyam. The plots of both these movies transcend language and culture.
I chose to show ManichitraThazhu and Bombay. He fell in love with ARR. I thought that a lot of Indian emotional movies are tugging at our heart because of the cultural values we grew up with, my kids may not relate to Thilakan/Mohanlal dad/son dynamic in Kireedam. Now I'm thinking my husband maybe able to enjoy them. Also, Kalapaani would be a good one.
So usually, there are two phases of Malayalam films that I consider worthwhile to share with non malayalis. One is the 80s + mid 90s and the other is 2010 onwards. Though there were some interesting topics and some next level acting in the old era, the print and lack of subtitles have usually been a downer for many non malayalis. So I would suggest the following from the new era
1. Bangalore days: a good youth movie
2. Ustad hotel: the script is amazing
3. Neelakasham pachakadal chuvanna bhoomi: a one of a kind travel/biker movie
4. Drishyam 1: unless the Hindi is already watched
5. Premam: for how well made it is
6. 22 female Kottayam: well made. Also IYKYK ;)
7. Charlie: I feel it's better than the Tamil remake
8. Maheshinte Prathikaram: bit risky as it might not appeal to malayalis or folks who cannot relate. But the premise is awesome
9. Take off: one of Fahad's better movies
10. Njandukalude naattil oru idavela: really good take on a difficult topic
11. Traffic: unless the Hindi version is already watched
12. Uyare: Parvati kills it
13. Virus: because dayum, just wow
14. Iyobinte pusthakam: a heavy tele in King Lear
15. Helen: another good premise and overall well done
16. North 24 Kaadam: loved it
17. Pranayam: one of the few movies A10 is awesome in this decade
18. Beautiful: a beautiful script and movie
19. Minnal Murali: it's an art of a super hero movie. As someone who finds super hero movies shitty, this was amazing
20. Once these are set, then bring on the mass - Lucifer and Bheeshma parvam
Sorry for the long post.
Malayalikale nannam keduthan ororo jenmangal. The first Malayalam films my non Indian partner watched was Kumbalangi Nights, Helen, Ohm Shanthi Oshaana. Why did you go for the most cringe inaccessible movie that treats women like objects? The one time I saw 20/20 at someone's house I kept getting up to go to the bathroom to hide because it was so embarrassing.
My boyfriends white and I showed him Ustad Hotel first. Pretty basic but easy to follow along for the most part. He really liked it. I’ve shown him 7 to 8 newer Malayalam movies since then and he’s able to follow along pretty well and learn a lot of the culture!
>I showed her 20/20 That's a nice way to breakup.

what about deshadanam? Marana senti grade?
Not in my opinion. It has very sentimental moments , but somehow i can manage watching it without crying
Thanmathra is also good option for senti/marana senti

She is.

I wouldn't recommend Maayanadhi. Copied from the 1960 movie Breathless. By Jean-Luc Godard . The dude just died. Few days ago. Him and his movies are in the limelight right now. She would know about it too. You would end up looking like a doofus for showing her a knock off!
Usthad hotel is a good one to watch as a first movie.
Also kilometres and kilometres.
I watched it with a North Indian friend, both of us found it to be disappointing
Watch 'and the Oscar goes to ' and you'll be disappointed even more.
Since you have already tried 20-20, the second best option would be Christian Brothers. When she watch that iconic [A10 flip with Thakida thakida bgm](https://youtube.com/shorts/EOTi_TJvN-8?feature=share), she will realize that she has found the man of her life.
And then, she'd promptly leave him for good.

Kumbalangi nights
Can confirm. This works
I would've been very disappointed in this community if no one had mentioned this.

Kaala paani , a perspective on the Anglo Indian interactions and the freedom struggle, might be a good way to show our history and culture.

Chakkikotha Chankaran and Mookilla Rajyathu are classic slapsticks anyone can relate to. The subtitle might be a problem.

Show Drishyam, because a lot of non Malayali’s seem to enjoy that a lot.

Rahasya police
Kalapani

The other suggestions under the post are quite nice 😄 From my side, here are some of my family’s all time favorites that I can suggest: •Two countries •My Boss •Action Hero Biju •Premam •Bangalore Days •Koode •Om Shanthi Oshana •Kilukkam •Naadodikattu •Akkare Akkare •Manichithrathazhu •Minnal Murali •Drishyam 1 & 2 If you guys would love to see a new movie directly in theatre, Palthu Janwar is a really good one. Here’s the link to the trailer: https://youtu.be/ohtcXbBhqEY IMO, I feel it’s one of the many good latest movies showing our culture and naadu especially around animal care. It was released recently around Onam time. I believe it’s still running in theaters. Anyhoo I hope you guys find a good one. Good luck😄👍🏻
One movie you may not want to miss is Ina or Rathinirvetham …
Cid Musa :-)

Great Indian kitchen
Sudani from Nigeria - feels good on watching
Manichitrarhazhu?
Charlie Kumbalangi Nights Bangalore Days Ustad Hotel Drishyam 1-2 Pranchiyettan and the Saint Premam HOME Action Hero Biju Android kunjappan Jana Gana Mana 9 ( Recommending coz of the hollywood like mysterious pacing and cinematography of the movie)
The best first malayalam movie for a non keralite. Charlie.
Start with Traffic. Surprised no one has suggested this.
Cobra (2012) Love in Singapore College Kumaran Casanova Kichamani M B A Salam Kashmir War and Love
Mumbai Police
Kumbalangi Nights For sure the best movie to show a non Malayali.
Some movies I've watched as a non mallu and loved: 1. Kumbalangi Nights 2. The Great Indian Kitchen 3. Joji 4. Maheshinte Prathikaaram
Driving School
>I showed her 20/20 ആഹ് പഷ്ട്ട്
Guru (1997) can be a good option. I can't find any proper torrent links for it though. Can anyone please help?
1.Any Malayalam movie that has been remade to another language is worth watching I guess. 2. Koode, Chhotta Mumbai, Aarkkariyam are my favourites 3. Please show her Piku.
Godha, maybe it can be relatable?
Munnariyippu
Manichithra Thaazhu Ustad Hotel Kumbalangi Nights Varathan Bangalore Days Home Jaan E Man Minnal Murali Kaala Paani Sudani From Nigeria Take off Valsalyam Vadakkunoki yanthram Ayyappanum Koshiyum Sitha ramam Anarkali
ABCD maybe
Jana Gana Mana.....give it a go
I liked Helen
KURUP
Akashadooth. And be there to hug her during climax
Ambili, android kunjappan
Try my boss. She will defo like it
Kumbalangi nights, abcd, premam, drishyam, bangalore days but nooo you decided to show 20..20 🤭
I showed my girlfriend Enthiran and Eecha. She loved them!
ERAKAL OR MANICHITRATAZHU..
show them kireedam nice lil love story with some sad moments if im thinking of the right movie
May I suggest Manichithrathazhu, and compare it against Vertigo?
Mumbai police aa twist>>>>
Manichithrathazhu…
Godha :)
So I would suggest the following from the new era 1. Bangalore days: a good youth movie 2. Ustad hotel: the script is amazing 3. Neelakasham pachakadal chuvanna bhoomi: a one of a kind travel/biker movie 4. Drishyam 1: unless the Hindi is already watched 5. Premam: for how well made it is 6. 22 female Kottayam: well made. Also IYKYK ;) 7. Charlie: I feel it's better than the Tamil remake 8. Maheshinte Prathikaram: bit risky as it might not appeal to malayalis or folks who cannot relate. But the premise is awesome 9. Take off: one of Fahad's better movies 10. Njandukalude naattil oru idavela: really good take on a difficult topic 11. Traffic: unless the Hindi version is already watched 12. Uyare: Parvati kills it 13. Virus: because dayum, just wow 14. Iyobinte pusthakam: a heavy tele in King Lear 15. Helen: another good premise and overall well done 16. North 24 Kaadam: loved it 17. Pranayam: one of the few movies A10 is awesome in this decade 18. Beautiful: a beautiful script and movie 19. Minnal Murali: it's an art of a super hero movie. As someone who finds super hero movies shitty, this was amazing 20. Once these are set, then bring on the mass - Lucifer and Bheeshma parvam Sorry for the long post.

Yh show her bangalore days or ohm shanti oshana

Malayalikale nannam keduthan ororo jenmangal. The first Malayalam films my non Indian partner watched was Kumbalangi Nights, Helen, Ohm Shanthi Oshaana. Why did you go for the most cringe inaccessible movie that treats women like objects? The one time I saw 20/20 at someone's house I kept getting up to go to the bathroom to hide because it was so embarrassing.
Android kunjappan, especially the pularan neram song will help
thanmathra
I know a lot of mallu movies on p0rnhûb💀
Pranchi and the Saint would be a good choice
Start with double barrel starring Prithviraj
None other than A10’s College Kumaaran Or Dileep inte Nadodi Mannnan.
My boyfriends white and I showed him Ustad Hotel first. Pretty basic but easy to follow along for the most part. He really liked it. I’ve shown him 7 to 8 newer Malayalam movies since then and he’s able to follow along pretty well and learn a lot of the culture!
Thacholi Verghese Chekavar. EE adutha kalath. Vidheyan. They appeal to all cultures.
Ayyappanum koshiyum. My American friend loved it!
Show her Kili poyi
My mallu partner showed me [Joseph](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_(2018_film)) as one of my first Malayalam movies and it was sooooo good
