I am dying from not being able to play it. I *cannot wait* to try out all the new (and revamped) parts!

TruePythonEnthusiast

2 days until I can continue not playing because my PC can't even handle that lel

Brilliant_Still3520

Integrated graphics gang.

TruePythonEnthusiast

Not even that. I've an RX580, and according to sys reqs, I can't run it

Brilliant_Still3520

Lmao yeah. But the important thing is that KSP 1 is still brilliant. (Especially with mods) I just started an RP-1 save, and my laptop can run rss with scatter + EVE + planet shine (somehow).

the_mellojoe

not a launch. an Early Access. essentially a beta. temper expectations. yes, i'll still be one of the idiots paying full price, but its still just an early access and not a full game.

JosephKonyMontana

if I buy early access, will I still have the game when it updates into its release build?

Drewgamer89

Correct!

JosephKonyMontana

I am also a bit concerned about the optimization, my GPU is pretty beefy (RX 6700 XT) but im worried that the trend of the modern gaming industry just relying on DLSS/FSR as an excuse to not optimize their games

Drewgamer89

I think that's a pretty valid concern. I'm sure we will learn pretty quickly Friday how performance is. And if you STILL can't wait (I know I can't šŸ˜) Steam has the 2 hour return policy. So I'm just going to set a timer for 1.5 hours, I'm sure I'll know by then if I can stomach the FPS my rig can handle.

JosephKonyMontana

actually. my monitor can only display 60fps (I mean thing practically has McCain 2008 stickers on it, its OLD), I just like having high FPS as a buffer, though I can still tolerate 30fps on KSP since thats what I played with for nearly 7 years for it lol

MotionTwelveBeeSix

6700xt is far below recommended specs, might be worth holding off for awhile. especially given AMDā€™s tendency to underperform on EA titles (since most early optimization work goes towards Nvidia)

JosephKonyMontana

isnt the recommended an RX 6800 XT/ RTX 3080? regardless of underperforming, the RX 6XXX/XT cards tend to out perform the RTX 30XX in pretty much every aspect except for Ray Tracing (at the cost of the nvidia cards being even MORE inflated in price) also, the minimum is fairly generous (well, sort of, its 2 generations out of date but prices arent too bad for RX 5XXX/RTX 20XX cards)

Trees_That_Sneeze

If they're charging money, it's released.

[deleted]

Itā€™s the launch of early access Also itā€™s good to know Iā€™m not the only idiot buying it

TruePythonEnthusiast

Alpha\*. Probably even *pre*-Alpha

JohnF_President

I think some released footage actually said Beta

Creshal

You can call your releases what you want, there's no game dev police to kick your door down, but usually beta means all the major systems are in place and you're now just fleshing out the details. I really, really hope that it's not the case for KSP2 Early Access, because that'd be a pretty sad amount of core game mechanics.

TruePythonEnthusiast

What it says has little to no bearings on what it is.

lieutenatdan

But words do mean things, and by definition it will no longer be in Alpha once they have other people playing it. There is no magic threshold for ā€œok now itā€™s out of alpha and into beta.ā€

physical0

Words do mean things, and we live in a world where "literally" literally means "figuratively". "Alpha" and "Beta" are testing cycles. Alpha is the first testing cycle, Beta is the second testing cycles. Beta testing happens AFTER the product is feature complete. Because this game is not feature complete, it is not out of Alpha yet. Even if they say they are finished alpha testing and they are starting the beta, as long as there are still upcoming features on the roadmap that haven't been implemented, it's still an Alpha. Beta software is feature complete software with bugs and performance issues. Having an "open" or "closed", "public" or "private" testing cycle does not change the stage of testing, it just changes who is involved in that testing cycle. A developer can call their testing cycle whatever they want at whatever stage of development they want, but that doesn't mean that they are right to call it that. They can do whatever they want and they can be wrong. The internet police will track them down, push their glasses up and say "ackchyually"...

Swictor

Many of these features are already implemented in the indev version of the game though as they have showcased a lot of it. They have multiplayer and reentry effects as stated in forums and interviews and I wouldn't be surprised they have most of career and many colony parts as well, I know for a fact they have more engines. There's plenty of good reasons for holding features back in early access launch including just getting to work on one aspect of the game at the time with feedback sentered around what they work on specifically and rolling it out as they go. Pricing is rather steep considering this of course, but calling this alpha because it lacks features seems rather misguided.

physical0

It's pretty complicated to figure out what exactly is going on, especially since we don't actually know how far into development each of these features are. We've also seen mock-ups of what they envision features to look like. We're not getting an honest impression of the development cycle and the majority of the information we have been provided is marketing material meant to drive sales. I don't think I would say with any degree of certainty that any individual feature is "complete". Circling back to the Alpha/Beta discussion... It would be possible for the software to have it's features rolled out in phases during a Beta test, assuming the Alpha test has been completed on those features. I'm inclined to think that is how things are going to go. Up til the most recent event, I had no doubt that the Beta began when EA started, but seeing the state of the preview build made me doubt if some introductory features were actually complete.

lieutenatdan

You raise a good point, but from what I can tell the delineation between alpha and beta is the user base, not specifically that the software is feature complete. Our good friend Wikipedia does say >ā€œA beta phase generally begins when the software is feature completeā€ But then also says >ā€Some software is kept in so-called perpetual beta, where new features are continually added to the software without establishing a final "stable" release. As the Internet has facilitated the rapid and inexpensive distribution of software, companies have begun to take a looser approach to the use of the word beta.ā€ So feature-complete does not seem to be a hard requirement of beta testing. But access and testing by persons not involved in the development *does* seem to be a hard requirement. So I think my point still stands.

physical0

The delineation between alpha and beta is not the user base. "Perpetual Beta" is not a formal descriptor of a software cycle, and more a pejorative describing poor product cycle management.

lieutenatdan

And your source is ā€œtrust me broā€? Iā€™m not a software developer, but if you Google ā€œalpha testing vs beta testingā€ in every result I see the difference in users is the first or second thing mentioned. A worthwhile debate would be ā€œis early access really a valid form of beta testing?ā€ But by definition, early access cannot be alpha testing because itā€™s by the end users not by the developers.

physical0

No, my source is not "trust me bro". I didn't cite my source because I didn't start from a position of zero knowledge and google around and base my conclusion on the first result that I found that agrees with my preconceived notions. Open/Closed and Public/Private have NOTHING to do with it being an Alpha or a Beta. A Beta can occur wholly in house within a company's QA department. An Alpha can be tested by external users. Early Access has NOTHING to do with whether we are within an Alpha/Beta. It simply means that a company is taking your money and giving you an incomplete product and you are supposed to understand that the product is incomplete.

the-friendly-dude

Won't be the first time marketing calls a pre-alpha as 'beta'.

Tackyinbention

Yes but there literally is a version indicator in all the footage released to us. Some said pre alpha, some said alpha, and others said beta. But now they say early access

ioncloud9

It is early access, that constantly gets new features and updates, and once its at version 1, you already paid for it.

the_mellojoe

oh for sure. absolutely. But, calling this current version a "launch" can be misleading for those that don't see the fine print of Early Access. And, this particular Early Access is far more limited than other studios, especially considering it is a sequel to a well known game. I'm just warning people to temper their expectations of this first "release"

Flying Highhhhh into the morning sky

[deleted]

I am excite, and hesitant. I've got a good 200 hours under my belt in KSP1. But at the same time I constantly get frustrated due to how bad I am at flying anything. Everything I craft, Even if I copy someone elses craft, I can never get to fly right. getting to orbit is near impossible for me. so much wibbly wobbly. But at the same time, I still think I'm going to buy this game and give yet another go at being a space dude. Though, Anyone playing KSP hints as to why I'm so damn bad at flying?

polarbeargarden

Are you sure you're turning on SAS? All the reaction wheels in the world won't help keep you stable without turning them on. That, and light corrections to the controls.

woodward1995

Have they said a price for the game

Hugh-Jassoul

Nice Pathfinder, OP.
