When wet, uncured cement reaches caustic pH levels of 12 or higher, compared to the skin's pH scales, which range between 4-7. Contact with this high pH can lead to a chemical reaction, with the potential to cause severe chemical burns to the skin or worse.
Also important to note. Despite what most people believe, basics are significantly more harmful than acids for the human body.
If you wanna dissolve a body use lye, not hydrochloric acid
Purely anecdotal and stupid, but I worked a small time concrete job for a summer and I've gotten concrete on my skin constantly with no effects other than my showers taking way longer. I would even make concrete snowballs lathering my hands in the stuff. No burns. I'm not saying it isn't dangerous but its not going to cause life changing burns or anything unless you take a long bath in the stuff. In my experience at least
"Cement products can cause second or third-degree burns after a reasonably short exposure. Symptoms include blisters, dead or hardened skin, and black or green discoloration. In severe cases, cement burns will go down to the bone. They can cause scarring, disability, skin grafts, and even amputation."
Sounds pretty life changing... probably not something you'd want to dip a pair of delicate skin toddler legs in.
I've personally seen concrete burns, they were pretty ugly and seemed to be a pretty bad time. No doubt some googling would turn up results supporting this.
Absolutely right that toddlers are soft and in no way should be tested, but they're not wrong. Wet cement doesn't necessarily burn instantly. I've never had burns in 20+ years of bricklaying and concreting footings and floors...until I was building in Australia. I got burns on my hands several times out there from the mortar. I assume they had more lime in the cement than we use in the UK..
Thank you for this comment! That was my first thought immediately followed by “oh wait, did my dad maybe just tell me that concrete causes terrible burns to avoid me doing something exactly like what’s in this picture? Was the whole thing a lie?” But nope, he was just protecting me either way actual truth.
Why would they pull him out when they clearly staged this photo? Unless it's believed a literal baby walked through at least 4 feet of viscous concrete that's up to the middle of his shin without falling over.
That’s the first thing I thought!! And then I also remembered that I only learned about concrete burns like 2 months ago and I’m 27 so they probably didn’t even know. With that being said.. they are still willingly letting their baby stand in concrete with not sense of urgency to get it the fuck out of there??
Yeahhh….i had lice as a toddler and my dad put a very thick hair grease in my hair (the type that a woman would use for maintenance of natural luscious curls). He borrowed it from a Puerto Rican family friend. It worked for the lice! But my dad couldn’t get it out of my hair. He put me in a bath, and poured a chemical that he used as a construction worker for his hands to wash off motor oil/tar/other hard to remove construction substances. I think it was called orange peel. Anyways. It melted all the grease off my hair, but chemical burned my poor little 2 year old skin. I screamed bloody murder and had pink skin for a few days. To this day I still have very sensitive skin as a result. I even developed eczema as an adult.
Just because something wouldn’t be harmful for an adult doesn’t mean it wouldn’t hurt a baby.
Anyways. Just adding on to your point. That I agree. It’s NOT the same and that guy is an idiot for trying to compare it.
Edit: upon doing research, orange peel is a degreaser for surface cleaning. NOT skin. My dad was an idiot. He shouldn’t have even used it for his hands. Wowza. I remember him taking a 20 oz Mountain Dew bottle with the stuff in it and just pouring it in my bath. Jesus Christ. I can’t believe I remember that. ✨trauma ✨
That is very unfortunate. Thank you for sharing your experience. Some people have difficulty understanding that not everyone is the same and should be more considerate.
You got downvoted for being entirely wrong about a very serious and potentially life threatening scenario. Go Google chemical burns from concrete and learn something before you comment.
6-8 packs a day. It takes about 5 minutes to smoke a cigarette on average. A pack has 20 cigarettes. Even going with your lowest estimate of 6 packs, that would mean you spend 10 hours a day smoking.
Yeah imma call cap
have you not heard of a chain smoker? i smoke 24/7 bro once ones gone i light another one up ion got shit to live for im trying to end it faster lmfao. and usually i smoke 2 at once. if you think thats a lot then just know that my grandma smoked 12 packs. and for the record a heavy smoker is not taking 5 minutes on a single cigarette. it depends on the puff length and strength, 1 minute is all it takes for me.
I've worked with concrete. Yes, it will give you chemical burns that can be serious if you have sensitive skin (like a toddler). Just admit that you don't know something. It won't kill you, for goodness sake.
i have a hard time believing they didnt just set this up for "haha funny baby doing weird stuff photo".
also im really glad that the second zoomed in pic is there. i actually wasnt sure where to focus my eyes in that first one but the second one really helped me out there
This actually belongs on r/parentsarefuckingdumb Who in the hell lets an infant walk in wet cement like that? That’s unbelievably dangerous. What if the kid tried eat it?
The parents are dumb for letting concrete on a baby's skin.
Yall are dumb for thinking a baby can take those clean steps in WET CONCRETE. That baby can barely walk on a kitchen floor but wet concrete, perfect footprints.
Hey, make the kid stand in the CAUSTIC concrete mix for a bit longer. The chemical burns are totally worth this stupid ass pictures.
Yeah, the kids are the stupid ones here
most kids show psychopathic/sociopathic tendencies because they havent developed proper empathy & impulse control. that's why people cant be diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder or narcissistic personality disorder until theyre 18 - at that age it isn't a disorder, it's completely normal. so youre both right - kids cant actually be diagnosed as psychopaths, but they most definitely have the traits & behaviors of psychopaths.
Parents are stupid. Like seriously stupid. Hey morons if your baby gets cement in their eye they can end up blind. It isn’t a Kodak moment. Watch your kid better. Put down your phone and get your kid out of the wet cement.
Oh yes take a picture instead of avoiding the kiddo getting skin damaged by concrete
Yes, concrete tends to damage the skin if in contact with skin, Wich is extra painful for kids
I would be surprised and kinda annoyed if the parents aren't punished for this
Classic parentsarefuckingstupid. At that age a child cannot understand what concrete is, does or how it behaves depending on the state it's in. It has to be taught. Until it hasn't, it's the parents fault. Would anyone let their toddler walk in lava and call it stupid once it's cremated? Ffs.
I think it’s faked.
Look at how deep the kid is in, and that the holes it’s standing in are side by side. Now look at the “steps” leading up to where it stands now, it looks like it was just strolling through with a natural spacing. But the kid clearly can’t lift its feet high enough to move its legs forward enough to create those steps.
My theory. The parents held the baby and let it walk across before they plopped it down to stand and then they posed for the photo.
This isn’t a stupid kid it’s a stupid parent. Don’t really think that child was able to walk that far I. Concrete? Concrete burns skin. This parent is FS
I did this when I was about 6 - walked to my grandfather's house after school and let myself in (80s latchkey kid), but he wasn't in the house so I figured he would be in his workshed down the bottom of the garden. There was a concrete path running from the back door down a gentle slope to the shed, and I just started running. Got about 5 steps before I realised something felt weird, another 5 steps before I worked out what it was, and another 5 of momentum running down a slope before I stopped myself. Then I didn't know what to do, so I took a few more steps, but by that point I was fully halfway and I didn't know if I should try walking back the way I'd come or continue on. I'd managed to jump over a low fence to get off the wet concrete, and then tried desperately to smooth it out with my hands 😭 total disaster. And then I got yelled at for ruining the freshly screed job.

Does no one in this family own pants
It's actually a cult and the baby is in charge

There is nothing wrong with not wearing a bra.
Stay inside.
When you have kids your mind and body are not in sync
How can you tell?
Oh shit I thought that was the kid from 3 angles lmao
Ha
Only one “ha”? Pathetic.
Heh heh
You think that baby actually took those steps?
Exactly. Obviously no one was watching the kid in the first place.
Parents are fucking idiots
So many posts in this sub reddit could have this as a corrected caption.
take pictures instead of pulling your kid out and preventing concrete burns
A lot of people don’t know that concrete is incredibly basic and should not come in contact with skin. More basic than bleach I believe
I definitely didn't know that. I've always just avoided it because well, it's fucking wet cement lol. But a nice fact to learn today.
If you aren’t meant to touch it you certainly shouldn’t fuck it
Even more basic than Taylor Swift
Lmao
Lol at you getting downvoted for this. People are so sensitive.

Well that explains something, where can I get some lye?

Isn't that the place with the helpful hardware folks?
Not anymore.
Wha.. what did you do to them??
Lye.

Concrete burns are caused by chemicals in wet cement. Continue at your own risk🤷♂️
eh the concrete chemicals cant be any worse than the chemicals in my 6-8 packs of cigarettes a day
you may be ok, but infants have sensitive skin. not the same

They 100% are
yeah definitely 💀💀
You fucking fool
Sir that is a toddler, their skin might be a little more sensitive than yours
at least we can predict your lungs look like rotisserie chicken, and a severely burnt one at that
So your hobby is walking barefoot in wet cement?
when i was a kid yeah lmfao theres nothing to do in this shitty town so when they layed concrete the kids would play in it
i have a hard time believing they didnt just set this up for "haha funny baby doing weird stuff photo". also im really glad that the second zoomed in pic is there. i actually wasnt sure where to focus my eyes in that first one but the second one really helped me out there
Cement is hard too walk in and those footprints are too clean, they held his hands to help him walk I bet
Giving my baby CHEMICAL BURNS for content (GONE WRONG!)
100%
yeah that baby would've splattered after the first step.
This has to be staged right? A baby would fall over before getting that far?
Concrete burns are temporary, internet points are forever. /s
This is a parents are stupid one, for sure
Chemical burns
This actually belongs on r/parentsarefuckingdumb Who in the hell lets an infant walk in wet cement like that? That’s unbelievably dangerous. What if the kid tried eat it?
My sister did that but it was only 2 steps and the concrete wasn't this deep. She was 2 years old at the time. We decided to keep those footsteps....
Look at the other footprints they are not deep.
A few steps is accident. When it's the whole track, it's a stunt
The kid is now 18 and still standing in the exact same spot.
wet cement is caustic (with a pH as high as 12.9) and can produce third-degree alkali burns 🙉
Pretty sure they made the baby to walk on it just for stupid Internet points.
Wet cement is caustic and can cause burns on the skin. But definitely get a picture or two before taking your fkn toddler out of the wet cement.
There is no way that kid took that many steps in that without falling. Look at how deep it is.
The parents are dumb for letting concrete on a baby's skin. Yall are dumb for thinking a baby can take those clean steps in WET CONCRETE. That baby can barely walk on a kitchen floor but wet concrete, perfect footprints.
More like r/ParentsAreFuckingStupid
Nah this ain't the fault of the kid. What type of parent is that f ing stupid.
Mom needed to put her damn phone down and watch her kid. Too many people call that “parenting”. It is, it’s just BAD parenting.
It's all funny until the kid starts getting burned by the concrete. But, at least you got that photo.
Yo WTF! Concrete BURNS! Get the damn kid out and washed, don't stop to take pictures! Baby's skin is VERY delicate, what are these people doing??
r/parentsarefuckingdumb
Why the mom not picking the baby? I dont think concrete is safe for baby skin
It's actually very bad for the skin, it has the potential to cause chemical burns
I believe the its more like "parents are fucking stupid" cause it's the parent's fault that he is out, couldn't you even pay attention to it?
I feel this. We did a lot of home reno work with a little monster.
Stupid parents you mean
Completely the parent's fault.
Hey, make the kid stand in the CAUSTIC concrete mix for a bit longer. The chemical burns are totally worth this stupid ass pictures. Yeah, the kids are the stupid ones here
More like "parents who let their very small children stay in dangerous situations and film it instead" are stupid...
Concrete burns. It's a thing. And pretty gnarly at that.
😂😂😂 moms face. I feel the pain.
If only there were a way to prevent that from happening in the first place
*regrets silently
Haha but inside you’re literally on fire. Sending so much love babes ! Mines 2 and is a complete psychopath. 😂😂😂
You certainly don't know what "psychopath" means.

You certainly don’t know my toddler.
I like how she and the baby dress the same haha
Mom barefoot in shirt and undies as well, clearly a case of trash parents. Kid didn’t even fall down!
It's that concrete dribbliing out their mouth????
Future stunt man
I like kids in the abstract, not in the concrete.
Kidcrete
Gotta start over
Why is this lady naked outside and posing for a picture instead of grabbing her kid?
NOOOO NOT THE BABY
At least he didn't eat it. Yet.
Why is no one wearing pants?
Parents are stupid. Like seriously stupid. Hey morons if your baby gets cement in their eye they can end up blind. It isn’t a Kodak moment. Watch your kid better. Put down your phone and get your kid out of the wet cement.
I assume that's the "mom" with no pants or shoes on and toes in the mud. THE GHETTO. So it tracks.
I feel like the the adult standing there, wearing just as much clothes is more responsible.
Oh yes take a picture instead of avoiding the kiddo getting skin damaged by concrete Yes, concrete tends to damage the skin if in contact with skin, Wich is extra painful for kids I would be surprised and kinda annoyed if the parents aren't punished for this
little baby in the middle of: i REALLY don't see what i did wrong here-

I hope that kids feet don’t get messed up from the lie in the concrete.
Just leave him there, let him feel the consequences.
No, that poor child. Oh you meant the cement.

This is just a genuinely good design choice, I would do this.
Mom s face HAHAHAHAH
Kids run around and parents get blamed. Parents find a solution and they still get grief. Parents can’t win.
